Has anybody heard anything or called about the decision meeting yesterday? I think I might call at my lunch if I haven't heard anything by then. Good luck to everyone!

I called Brian at 9 a.m. PST. He said they were finalizing details and would be able to tell me the decision by 12 noon. Just called and got the acceptance!

SO PUMPED! First OOS acceptance!

congrats! when will they actually be actively calling? or do they not do that?

Waitlisted. I hate everything about this process. What the **** do schools want from me?

Rejected.

im sorry about the rejection. do you mind sharing if this was pre-seconday, post-secondary/pre-interview or post-interview? it would be helpful for people im sure. thanks and good luck with your other applications.

I think lastcall is referring to the "Acceptable Pool". They don't start rejecting just yet. I have yet to hear anything =/

hmm, "rejected" sounds pretty definitive. "acceptable pool" sounds pretty good to me...certainly better than rejected, but ok.

so there havent been any pre-secondary rejections yet? can anyone confirm this?

^ That's it. Sorry.

ah ok, thanks for clarifying. you sound so pessimistic about what seems like not a bad place to be. but i definitely understand how dejected this process can make someone feel. good luck.

The fact that the acceptable pool doesn't move until MAY makes it sound pretty awful. I don't know about everyone else, but I really despise the idea of waiting until May or June to find out where I'm going to school. By then, I'd like to be finalizing financial aid and looking for housing.

Also, it's unranked. What does that even mean? Do they pull names out of a hat or something?

I can't remember if SD said this or another school, but while there is no "official" ranking, there's kind of like an internal ranking in the sense that the adcom has a general idea of where you are, although there is no set order. but again, I don't remember if this is what I heard at SD or another school I visited...

Edit: also, for those of you who were accepted, does it have a date next to "Final Decision Letter Sent" on your application status? I guess this question goes out to the "pooled" people as well, although I doubt you would have one since a waitlist is not a final decision...

Any 11/9 or 11/10 interviewers received the interview-day evaluation email yet?

There is a date next to "Final Decision Letter Sent." However, it took at least a couple of weeks after being invited to interview before there was a date next to "Invited for Interview" on the same status page, so I wouldn't worry if it takes a week or so.

once you get a secondary, do OOS and IS have the same chances? or is it still heavily IS favored?

I was in the acceptable pool during last cycle, and I can tell you that it is entirely awful. I think the whole waitlist game is terrible to play unless you have an acceptance somewhere.

I know that people always post about getting in off the waitlist, or people at the schools talking about X% of the class that got in off waitlist, but the reality is: don't hold your breath.

Not meaning to sound so negative; the sheer numbers of applicants, scarcity of spots, and waitlisted people create this situation. For UCSD in particular, they say it's unranked but I'm certain there have to be "tiers" within the pool. I remember them making cuts from it last year, before and after May. It's just unfortunate you don't know where you are in the pool.

I think residency is a significant consideration up until you get an interview... post-interview, it seems like they accept ~50% of applicants, regardless of state residence.

Hi everyone - I'm an MSI at UCSD SOM, and I just wanted to suggest that everyone invited for an interview do the free clinic tour and dinner, especially if you're not staying with a student (which is a super good thing to do too!). Or find an MSI/II to have coffee with, or whatever. It's just so hugely important to get to talk to students to get a real feel for the school (especially UCSD, in my opinion).

Congrats to those accepted, and good luck to everyone else! Don't give up hope if you don't hear for a long time, are on hold forever, etc. I know there are people in my class who interviewed in March 2009 and people who were accepted the week before orientation!

just got a call today (Tues) from Dean Kelly and she told me I was accepted. I'm OOS and interviewed on Oct 19 if anyone's worrying about those details.

Congrats guys! I feel like I am on Cloud 9 right now!!

Interview invite today (11-18) for all the way in March 😀

ucsd sounds pretty great about being transparent with their applicants post-interview... anybody know if they're willing to share our app's progress if we've been complete almost 2.5 months and haven't heard anything at all?

I registered up for the clinic tour, but I was wondering what the dress code is? Its in PB so I assume board shorts and flip flops? Ed hardy tees?

Interview invite!! 😀 Complete mid sept. Interview scheduled for march.

Hmmm...I was actually accepted off the acceptable pool list a week after people were supposed drop all but one acceptance, which I think was in April.

hahahahahahaha...yeah it is pretty kickback!

No need to dress up at all

I second this!

Secondary complete: 9/11, Interview Invite: 11/4, Interview date: 2/9, IS

I just found out that I got in, and I'm really excited. The only thing is that at every other school I interviewed at (especially Vanderbilt and NYU), the students seemed super happy and enthusiatic about the school and said how much they loved it over and over. UCSD students didn't seem horribly unhappy or anything, but they weren't raving about the school either (maybe I went on an off day?). Are there any current UCSD students out there who can elucidate the situation there honestly? I know the curriculum is going to change a ton next year and move to entirely pass/fail the first two years so that is positive for sure!

Thanks for any feedback you have!

To tell the truth, I had a similar vibe. But I don't think it comes from students being unhappy (because ALL of the students I talked to were super happy) or not liking the school, but more of that UCSD had a very chill vibe, which I LOVED! A lot of the students were VERY laid back, so this may have come off as non-enthusiastic.

I pray to God that I got in here. I don't think I can bear to wait two weeks yet another time. . .

I have yet to meet an unhappy person in the '13 class. Plus the curriculum changes look pretty sweet for your incoming class, so that's something else to be happy with.

I picked UCSD over UCLA last cycle and sort of regretted it initially (yea I sort of fell prey to the name factor), but now I have 0 regrets. Enormous and well structured support system on virtually every level (psychological services, administrative services, a plethora of student and physician/faculty contacts individually assigned to each student based on interests, tutoring services, etc).

I am not one of those people that will do retroactive justification to trick myself into thinking I made the right choice. I honestly 100% know that UCSD is great, so dont feel bad, be super happy!

anyone get off pre-interview hold yet?

Could someone elaborate on the curriculum changes? I'm interested. Is UCSD totally revamping their curriculum or just making some minor changes? I think I'd personally fare better with an organ/system based approach than the traditional breakdown by class. It'd be great if UCSD were switching to the systems approach.

Systems approach + P/F first two years + in general less lecture time

Hi LAMan! I actually got the call two weeks ago, sorry to be unclear! I know that they traditionally tell people on Nov 16th but I found out early so I could cancel some other interviews. 🙂 Good luck to you!!

does Brian want us to call if we didn't hear anything on the day we were supposed to? I mean, it's obvious what it means (my interviewers prob turned in the evals late), but did he want us to call anyway?

That's fantastic! Do they tell you more about this at the interviews? Thanks for the information. I imagine I'm not the only one who's excited about this. Now I want to get into UCSD even more.

I would call Brian! It can't hurt and it shows interest. Good luck!!

Has anyone heard anything yet (interviews, WL etc) after getting marked complete in late Oct or early Nov?

RedPeony, I would really suggest talking to students outside of the interview day context to get a better feel for the school. I felt much better about UCSD after having coffee with a couple of students (months after my interview, when I was focused on whether I liked the school instead of whether they would like me). Also, I think it helps if you can find students with somewhat similar backgrounds who can address specific issues (eg. slightly older vs. just out of undergrad).

I sent you a PM with my email if you'd like to chat.

I got an interview invite for sometime in March. Are your odds drastically lower than the typical ~40% acceptance rate this late?

Nov 12 interviewee here. Apparently our apps go to the admissions committee tomorrow and news on acceptance/acceptable pool on tuesday? Anyone in the same boat and nervous as balls as I am? UCSD rocks!

Haha this is my thrid time in your boat. I interviewed 10/1 They have put me off the last TWO admission meetings because of a late eval. Hopefully third admissions meeting is a charm. Good luck to everyone. On tuesday, call Brian, and he will be upfront with you with where you stand.

Hey..to all the interviewers on Nov 9-12ish, have any of you guys received the email to fill out the post interview survey?

I did email them directly and got the link, but I don't know my student tour guides' names. Is it okay if I just leave 'em blank? Thanks!

I never got one. Can you post the link for all of us?
thanks
