I couldn't agree with you more! I don't want to get my hopes too high... but I can't say I am not anxious!!! :xf:

Very true. Excited for what's to come and hoping for the best. What do you think my chances are (bottom half of upper 1/3)

I think yours are very good (you said you're in the upper half of the upper 1/3, right?).

Good luck to you and hang in there..almost there!

Hey, nuttynut! I'm fairly new at posting here at SDN so nice to meet you. Yep. I am a Florida resident (Miami here). Where are you from? Hang in there and keep the faith!

kjsmith127... congrats! No update email on this end yet. Maybe UCF is sending the updates in batches?

Hang in there and again congrats!

kjsmith did your email say how many people were on the waitlist?

I understand the c/o 2014 will have all their medical school classes at Lake Nona. Lake Nona, currently, is surrounded by nothing. It is about 20 minutes on one side from UCF undergrad, 20 minutes on the other side to Celebration hospital. 30 minutes in all directions from downtown Orlando, Winter Park, Disney, and IoA.

My questions are:

  1. Where will most students be advised to live? How far will that be from Lake Nona?
  2. Where will the c/o 2014 complete their clerkships? How far will that be from Lake Nona?
  3. Will the charter class be with us at Lake Nona for their second year?
  4. How far will we be from grocery stores, movie theatres, bars, shopping malls?
Thanks in advance for replies!

Yep right now about 20 minutes from main UCF campus, same from Disney, 10 minutes from airport. Immediately adjacent to Lake Nona and within about 2-3 miles are many new housing units as well as established shopping areas in established neighborhoods. All COM students, staff etc will be in the COM building. Within 2 years major construction will begin on the huge retail mall across the street from the COM, ditto for housing units immediately adjacent to COM area. Roughly 20 mins from downtown major medical clinical training areas. The Nemours Children's Hospital will open mid 2011 and new VA in mid 2012 immediately adjacent to COM. Recommendations for housing are forthcoming from our student groups, but my guess would be to live somewhere in the established neighborhoods between downtown and COM --- ~10 minutes to COM or downtown hospitals....this was an easy equation to solve.....the Lake Nona area will be an area of constant building for homes, retail, clinical, and research for the next ?7-10? years. It will be an amazing "go to" medical destination!

That sounds great. I wish we could get a tour of the surrounding neighborhoods of COM to get an idea of where we'll be living! I remember during interviews we drove straight through from the UCF campus to Celebration, passing COM on the way. It looked like a building in the midst of a large desert!

If those who received acceptance notices around 3/12 don't mind posting their stats, I'd really appreciate it.....wait-listed here and really want to get an idea of where I need improvement....

anybody know how is the rush hour traffic is in ORL? Is Lake Nona a city within ORL

It really depends on where you live and how close you are to 528 or 417 (both toll roads). I would say, I-4 gets very busy. The toll roads perhaps less so. Lake Nona is south of 417 and south and slightly east of the airport. There are apartments just north of 417 off Narcoosee labeled Co Rd 15 on google maps. There are neighborhoods and apartments there. There's also grocery, fast food, petrol, pre-schools and the like all right there. I imagine it is enough for a very busy medical student if you want to live near the COM. Right in the middle of Orlando (north of the Orlando Executive Airport and 408) is Baldwin Park and newer planned community with apartments, townhomes and expensive single family homes. Winter Park is also there--an older, expensive neighborhood with character. Just as an idea, this location is about 20-25 min from the international airport down Semoran and the COM is south of the airport from there. (there's no interstate direct route from the center of town). Out west on 408 is Avalon Park, Waterford Lakes and lots of other neighborhoods. All the amenities you could want are there as well, but currently there's no interchange from Alafaya Trl to 528. It's currently under construction and once it's complete, the travel time will be cut drastically.

If you are not going to live near the COM, I would advise living as near the 417 / 528 as is safe, convenient and possible, unless you don't mind driving. Orlando is very spread out. You may consider living close to school the first 2 years and then moving closer in for the clinical years.

If you need to choose schools for children, that's another ball of wax entirely. The market right now is a buyer's market if you are in the position to do that, but I don't know how much further it will fall and it seems there's more short sales/bank-owned homes than traditional sales.

Only my opinion, others familiar with the area, please chime in.....

Love ya as always thanks. As i gather more info I am not living in lake nona. it is to surburban.

I agree in that it is VERY suburban. Check out Winter Park, College Park, Thornton Park, Baldwin Park. Baldwin Park may be too "new-urbanism" but Winter Park, Thornton Park and College Park are older and more established--I just don't know about rentals/prices.

All those neighborhoods are nice. I was just at Park Ave in Winter Park this weekend and went to a festival downtown at Lake Eola. It may be a personal preference, but I think those neighborhoods may be too far to commute everyday. Winter Park is ~31minutes from the Lake Nona campus. Growing up around the area, I've always thought that Orlando in general is highly suburban unless you live downtown (urban) or south of the airport (rural). My idea of ideal housing also may be different from faith2 and ftrflyr29 since I have no kids or spouse. I'm thinking about living in the Boggy Creek area (32837 zip code). I'm making a spreadsheet of different apartments/rates in the area and I'm happy to share it you like, just PM me or ask on facebook 😀

Everyone at the second look, hope you're having fun (a little jealous over here) and please post about your experience! 😀 Wish I was there!

Hope everyone at second look is having a great time, as well!

That sounds awesome about the building at Lake Nona, faith2! Anxiously (but hopeful and staying posiive) waiting here for the waitlist movement. It would be an honor and a blessing to attend. I'm sure second look was an awesome experience!

It was really nice. All the students did not come. The waitlist might be moving soon. The new building is RIDICULOUS!! I met a few people I can see me building friendships with. I hope the people that really want to come get a chance.

Thanks for posting! Hoping for a reason to come visit sometime soon 😀

Got my April update today. Man, it's such a teaser!!! I am also in the upper half of the upper third. I really hope I get in. I would love going here!

Got mine today. Said I'm lower 1/2 of the upper 1/3, so sounds like there's hope. I really got a good vibe fromt he school, so I'll be crossing my fingers for the next month or so.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know approximately how many people attended the second look? Did everyone there mention whether or not they planned on attending??

Of the 60 currently accepted, I think there were 36 in attendance. No one said they weren't going but a few said they were keeping their options open and that it may depend on financial aid award and whether out-of-state fees would be waived.

Hi! Does anyone know if there is a forum or group where the UCF accepted students congregate? I'm VERY blessed to be one of the accepted and would love to meet some of the others?
Thanks!
Best of luck to all!!! Hope you get into the medical school of your dreams.

Financial Aid award received. No full scholarship for me. Don't know if there are any available, but can say it will not be like the first year class.

I LOVE UCF! I'm excited about the medical city... But unfortunately, I'm in the first half of the middle third of the waitlist. I'm trying to stay hopeful.

To all on the waitlist...let's stay positive and hopeful. The waiting is almost over! Keep the faith!

I remember REL telling us about how the waiting list works but I forgot some of the details.

Do they go in order regardless of whether you're in-state applicant or oos?

Thanks! 🙂

I dont know this for sure but because they are a state school they cannot replace an instate acceptance with an out of state because they can only accept so many out of state people. Therefore it is likely that OOS acceptances from the waitlist will only happen as oos people withdraw.

I'm almost positive that's what they said on the bus.

This may sound like a stupid question... but does it work the other way around as well? If a OOS student withdraws then an IS student would be skipped on the waitlist for an OOS student?

Again not 100% sure but I believe they have a target OOS percentage <25% of class and so an IS acceptance would only come from an IS withdrawal.

Thanks for the answer! That's what I was thinking as well.

So what sort of scholarships did people get? Was it 25%? 50%? I'm curious.

Thanks

I'm not sure if this has been asked before but here's a hypothetical situation:

I'm on many waitlists and have no acceptances as of right now. May 15th comes and I get 3 acceptances. How long do I have to pick one of those three? Is there a second drop day like May 15th for the next wave of accepted students? Or is it different for each school?

Thanks in advance, and GL to everyone! 😀

I think how it works is that you have x amount of time to take the acceptance at the school where you got of the waitlist. I think UCF said 2 weeks. But I imagine if you accept and after that you get off another waitlist you can still take the 2nd acceptance as long as classes haven't started yet.
