I read about it as well, and getting kinda worried.

Hope the accredation stays until I graduate...

No kidding... If they don't have something worked out by May, I might be a little leery of going through with enrolling, we shall see.

Oh, by the way, I also got accepted a couple of weeks ago! It was great news... though now I can't be too sure! :scared:

University of Colorado Denver SOM is not going to lose accreditation. The article states that the potential loss of accreditation is due to mainly not having a diverse enough student body and that there arent enough funds, in terms of scholarships, to retain these students.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. The type of education you'll be receiving will be the same. Its a diversity issue not a quality of education issue.

Yeah, I don't think anybody is worried about the education quality, it is top notch. But there are other reasons schools can lose accreditation apparently. It seemed like the article also got at the lack of funding in general being a problem, not just as it pertains to URMs. Is that off base?

If it is a diversity issue, what does the LCME define as "diverse enough"? Colorado is not exactly the most diverse state, mind you, but I'm sure they could do more.

I don't know what kind of diversity is needed for accredation, but I thought having quotas for different races were illegal.

Anyways, Colorado needs to act now and provide more funding for the medical school considering the school and medical center's contribution to state economy.

Yesterday the dean of studentaffairs came by and mentioned this and and read us a letter from the dean. He stated in the letter that was sent to current students and faculty, that a quick reading of the article would give the impression that CU was in any danger of losing its accreditation, however that is not the case. When the accrediting board came they noted the diversity and the miserable state of funding from the state. CU provided some plan to increase diversity that satisfied the board, and board sent a letter stating that CU's accreditation would continue with no stipulations. The deans talk with the reporter focused on drumming up awareness for the lack of funding, and ended up being blown out of proportion, at least according to the dean of student affairs. I'm sure especially those who have been accepted could email her and get a copy of the deans letter.

Beautiful. I was beginning to think that this was probably the case, seeing as you've really got to slip up to even get put on probation by the LCME (like GWU). The Post sure does know how to paint gloom and doom, and a few of us fell for it.

To the bolded point: the article says something about reevaluating in 18-months. Is that a stipulation on accreditation or is that just standard practice after the LCME reviews schools (CUs was in March) and finds some issues?

To others who are concerned about this, the LCME has never revoked anybody's accreditation, and has only ever put a handful of schools on probation, CU not being one.

Hopefully Bruce Benson's purported ability to get money will be demonstrated in the coming months.

Good to know that no schools have been revoked of accredations.

Hope it continues.

Well that's good news to hear! Hey default, how did the interview go?

Do you guys know about how we should email U of CO about updates for our application? I know some schools do it through email and others want paper...thanks!

I emailed and they told me they don't accept updates (pre-interview at least)

My interview was such late notice that I spent all of thursday looking for a suit (I found holes in the seat of the pants of my previous suit wednesday). After much travail, I found one and had it tailored by my very kind and patient girlfriend, but I didn't get to sleep until almost 1 in the morning. So I was a little frazzled, especially when one interviewer nailed me to the wall on abortion. Other that that I think it went well.

As for the stipulations point, the LCME accepted CU's plan to increase diversity at the school. The 18 month check-up if you will is a just to check that the plan has been implemented.

As for updates, last year Norma Wagoner said that once your file is complete, the only updates that they accept are for the completion of course delinquencies. Other than that, you can bring your updates as proof for your interviewers but they don't have to do anything with them.

Hey all I see there has been quite a bit of worry about the possible loss of accreditation. They have sent us e-mails explaining that everything is fine and things were blown out of proportion. We are not in danger (and if you decide to come here you will not have to worry either) about not graduating from an accredited school. The education we receive here is awesome and although the diversity here is not that great they are working on increasing funding for those students. If you have specific questions PM me. But if you have been accepted here don't hesitate to come! The school is amazing and I couldn't have made a better choice. Even in light of all the recent events in the "media"!

Don't worry 987, I'm already sold. Now lets just hope the committee is as excited about me....

I just recieved an invite the other day for a jan 25 interview. I was curious to learn from those who have already been fortunate enough to be accepted to CU what their general stats are. I would like to learn what each student thought that their major attribute/accomplisment was that they would atribute to their ultimate acceptance into the CU program. I hope to attain a better idea of what type of student that they are looking for. Thanks

I got an interview a week or so ago - Jan 22nd. How do they choose who goes to which interview date? They didn't give me an option.

Also, does anybody know anything about spending the night on campus with a med student? I e-mailed them and all they said was that they'll find somebody for me and I'll be spending the night before my interview.

Edit: By the way, I'm way more excited than how I sound on here. Me = stoked!

I imagine it has something to do with a preliminary screening score. I know they wouldn't let me change my interview date unless I was traveling at the time, so they seem pretty confident that people will drop everything to attend the interview, at least for in-state students. Then again, I think I had traveled the furthest on my interview day... all of 100 miles. And I was earlier than someone who came from a city I had to pass through.

I have 3.99 GPA with 34 MCAT.

I have lot of research but almost no clinical experience. I have been doing biology research since summer after my freshman year, which I am still involved with a personal project. (however, no publication yet. but atteneded 2 national meetings with poster presentations) I also did a medical research at a medical school for a summer after sophomore year.

Some volunteer experiences under my belt (still doing it). Total hours add up to about 200+ hours so far. This volunteer experience may overlap with clinical experience due to people interaction I am involved with. However, the institution I volunteer in has no hospital-affiliation.

I was in the first batch to be interviewed and the first batch to be accepted.

I personally think that my GPA and MCAT score with research background got me into CU. Also being in-state helped a bunch since I am getting rejections from all over the place.

During interview, just stay positive and make sure you answer each question with most details that you can dig up.

Do not exaggerate or lie during interview.👍

cGPA: 3.6 sGPA:3.7
MCAT: 33

Like rockymhs I have a lot of research experience (three years including full time two summers, with no pubs). I've presented posters at 3 (2 when I applied) local meeting/conferences. I have two clinical volunteering experiences each lasting between 1 and 2 years.

I interviewed in late October and was in the first batch of acceptances.

I am also in state and I think that was a big factor in my acceptance. I was honest about how I wanted to come back to Colorado (I'm going to school out of state).

I think my GPA and MCAT were helpful in getting the interview, but my sense during the interview was that there was really no emphasis on those factors (I'm fairly certain your interviewers don't even have the numbers in front of them). Overall, I think the best way to rock the Colorado interview is to be honest and to be positive and confident about who you are. The point of the interview is really to see if you would fit in with the class, everyone interviewing is qualified to go to school there.

Good luck!!!:luck::luck:

can you send update letters to this school? (pre-interview)

I am still hoping for a chance to interview here! I love Colorado. I haven't heard anything since my secondary was complete (end of September), so I'm hoping that I still am under consideration! Anyone know how they send out rejections? Or is it a good/bad sign that I've had to wait this long? (I am OOS, 4.0GPA/31R MCAT)

I would keep the hopes up, but being OOS might put you in disadvantage.

It certainly did for my other OOS schools, even with my stats...

I am pretty sure at my interview the associate dean said most (if not all) rejections will not be sent until March 31st.

Accepted OOS with a 3.9/ 33.

CU really emphasizes being strong in research as well as in patient care. It seems like they would want an applicant to have meaningful experiences in each of these. I've volunteered at two different hospitals and shadowed quite a bit at a hospital affiliated with CU. My research began in March but was fairly extensive throughout this summer. Other topics the interviewers seemed interested in included study abroad, athletics, and previous jobs. It's hard to say which of these they found most interesting.

CU also has a rural track and is committed to serving the entire state of Colorado; I would imagine that CU would be interested in an individual who worked extensively in underserved areas. This did come up during the interview even though I did not express interest on my application regarding rural medicine.

I think one way to stand out in an interview is to have a very strong answer for the typical "Why X School of Medicine?" I feel that I was able to effectively articulate my interest in CU because of my clinical and research experiences in the Denver area. Reading on their website is a great start, but you may want to also talk to current students if you know any.

Good luck!

So quick question, I know CU doesn't accept update letters but say one of my employers wants to write me a letter of recommendation (I started working my new job right after I got everything submitted back in August). Would it be worth it for me to get a copy or two to bring to my interviews in sealed envelopes? Or should I just forget about it?

Why not just update through AMCAS?

I think it is more concrete way of adding to your application since the adcom will receive the letter and put into your file.

Bringing additional stuff to interview does not guarantee that they will read it or even use it.

I didn't know I could do that! I thought that once the secondaries were complete and I got invited for an interview the file was closed? That would be much more convenient...Thanks!

No problem. Once you submit the letters, all schools will have updated letters as far as I know.

I know they say everyone will know their post interview status on March 30th, but what is the typical turn around time from an interview in late December?

I don't know if they've met yet for December interviews (no one has posted here with news of an acceptance... I believe last year they came out like on the 23rd), but I interviewed at the beginning of October and haven't heard anything.

09/08/2009 We have received your secondary application payment and have begun processing your completed application. The final status for most applicants will not be decided until March 31, 2010.

anyone else been waiting this long?

That's what mine says... are you IS or OOS? I'm OOS

The status online never changes. Even after I was offered an interview the "The final status for most applicants will not be decided until March 31, 2010" stays on there. There is nothing else listed.

There is no "typical" turn around. There are people in our class who were accepted the day they interviewed and people who found out sometime in late April or early March. These are people who were not wait-listed just accepted. There is no way to peg when you will be notified. I think it took a long time for my online status to change even after I was accepted. Hope this helps! If you have any questions PM me!

Invited for interview 12/2, interviewed 12/4, ACCEPTED 12/22!!! Three years of applying and im going to be a doctor!!

Congrats Default!

Does anyone know of a FB group for the CU accepts? It sure would be nice to network a bit prior to second look.

I'll most likely be going to CU. I'm not getting a whole lot of love from other places. Though even if I did, it would be a hard sell. I felt really good at CU, and I feel like the school is really dedicated to helping the students succeed and they have a lot of resources to make it possible. plus in state tuition for me is really really nice.

Anyone still waiting for the interview invite?? ::twiddles pollex::

I am still waiting too:xf: My application was complete on 11/04...

I am still waiting too:xf: My application was complete on 11/04...

My app was complete end of september. Is this going to be a silent rejection if I don't here soon? (Are schools required to at least send you notification?) I was really hoping for a chance here.

Maybe they are taking a break on interviews for the holidays and will send out a bunch of invites beginning of january...?

Most schools have given the silent rejection in years past. CU however gives rejections and finishes interviews in march. No one is rejected post secondary until then (75% sure on that) and then all applicants will be notified of rejection then. If you haven't heard by February, your chances are pretty low.

Anyone still waiting for the interview invite?? ::twiddles pollex::

I was complete on 9/8 and I've heard nothing. I'm getting pretty frustrated as I was waitlisted on the Alternate 2 list last year.

Complete since early Sept. and just got the interview invite. I'm interviewing on 2/22. 👍
I'm excited, but I have to wonder is such a late interview invite indicative of me being assessed for the waitlist? Anybody have any insights or any special advice? Thanks.

Hey Everyone!

Anyone interviewing on Monday (1/11)?

I had a missed call from the Anschutz Medical Campus on Tuesday and called the number back. Turns out it was the admissions office trying to schedule a short notice interview for Monday. Unfortunately, I was too late and they filled the slot. I received an email invite for February 22nd today. Better late than never.

I regards to the question above, there were several people that interviewed late last year (i.e. February and March) and recieved accepances strait up, not via the waitlist. Waiting until now for an interview invite hasn't been the best expreience but interviewing late does have an upside. We'll find out pretty quickly (by the end of March) what our fate is instead of having to wait months.
