i wish they started sooner! i know the concept of safety schools is questionable . . . but as an IL resident with odd/unbalanced but overall good stats, it would definitely ease my mind a lot to at least have an interview here. especially now that i've gotten my first rejection (damn Wake Forest 👎) i'm especially hesitant to spend the $100 each on SLU and RFU, since i'd rather go to UIC- but if they wait a long time i better just bite the bullet and submit them and not try to hold out for UIC first

Hah well for me there are no safety schools so at least you have that going. But like I said, my scores are competitive with what UIC admitted and I am very excited about the possibility of going there so hopefully that shows in my app.

lol. well its not because i'm particularly great or anything, it's just the in-state thing. to clarify, i'm not saying that because of my stats and in-stateness that i am sure i will get in. my chances are just better here than anywhere else, so if i don't get any love from here i'm afraid no one will love me!!

but i hope they love you too. they are a huge school 😀 there's enough love for all of us.

has the website been down for everyone recently? how long does "maintenance" usually last? i have been getting this message for the last 2 days when I try to acess the secondary:
Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

wanting to just submit this thing already... +pissed+

i've been having the same problem. +pissed+

Would it be bad if my answer to second question is only 150 out of 250 words?

I restarted our application server running both our admissions application status application, and our online supplemental access application this morning. We are investigating the cause of the shutdown, which occurred at 1:22pm central time. Sorry about that.

Your friendly neighborhood IT guy...who has the weekend off to complete the many "honey-do" tasks that my wife has a seemingly endless supply of. :slap:

Pretty awesome how UIC's IT guy posts here! Thanks for the update - site worked just dandy this morning.

Applicant in Process... anyone have anything BUT this?

Applicant in Process... anyone have anything BUT this?

I saw that status for a few months and then one day, I got a number to call to choose my interview site and if I wanted to have it in the AM or PM. Just continue to be patient 😀

i'm still application in process. complete 8/5, in state.

haha i saw this and i was all excited that someone got an interview. then i was like hey wait a minute . . . you had that status a few months ago?? it's only august . . . oh wait nevermind 😳

uic is too busy digging themselves out of the admission scandal hole. i think that's why it's taking them a long time to review our applications.

Hey Wahoo, is that Rasheed Wallace in your avatar?

This is mostly with regards to the law school and UIUC undergrad. UIC is not as affected and certainly not their med school. Shouldn't affect anything.

A report published Thursday by the Illinois Reform Commission said unqualified students were accepted to the University of Illinois’ most elite programs including law, business, and medicine as the result of a “shadow admissions process.”

"Applicant in Process"

was "Application is in Process" about an hour ago!

same here, now applicant in process...been application in process for over a month.

ergh, still Application in Process... when did you guys above complete?

And for the record, I know two students who got into UIC with sub par scores. They are not URM. We're talking MCAT in the low twenties.

Blah blah blah. Folks, quit speculating. Much more goes into admissions than just your numbers and it doesn't automatically mean they knew someone. Some schools ACTUALLY look at your whole application. Relax.

Hey Zip,

I feel like I read somewhere along filling out the secondary that UIC didn't accept updates. Is that true? I am doing a kind of interesting internship that I wasn't able to put on AMCAS so I'd want to update them if possible. Otherwise I'll just hope to talk about it in an interview hah.

Thanks

If it's so 'interesting', why couldn't you put it on AMCAS? They do accept updates, but mostly from post-interview people.

Part of the challenge of putting together a solid application is having to choose - in the [deliberately] limited space provided - what to highlight and bring to committees' attention. You don't get two bites at the apple, so to speak. 😉

I had applied for it in the spring and had literally forgotten about it until late July when they offered me a chance to come in and talk about doing it. I submitted my primary early in June, so thats the only reason its not on AMCAS. 😛 I'll just hold off for now.

went from "application..." to "applicant..." yesterday. woo hoo

Hey zip...

I was wondering if you knew anything about the application process for the UMED program. I'm very interested in applying (have already written the essays), but when I clicked on the link to submit it online it mentioned that the application wasn't available yet and to check back. Do you have any idea when they start looking at applications for that program too? Is it a program where you have to already have an interview invite or something? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

For the second essay, I have a few topic areas which I am considering writing about, and they are related. The first is to discuss my interest in learning about world leaders and leaders of social change, and how they accomplished it. The second essay theme I am thinking about is to write about my interest in spirituality and learning about different religions. The last essay idea I have is to write about my practice of meditation, and how it is related to spiritual inquiry.

Do any of you have comments on which essay might be more interesting? Also, do these each sound like hobbies? I don't want to write an essay about one of my interests if they don't fit into the categories of "hobby or activity" which the prompt asks for.

Dr. Jorge Girotti, the person who is in charge of the UMed program, emailed me, "Wait for the new application, which should be up online by 9/1. JG."

Just another week or so of waiting, I guess?

quick question...i work in a lab at UIC, but I don't get paid through UIC. Answering the question on the secondary if I'm employed by the University of IL, I would say NO, right? Wish I could say yes 🙁

Not really speculation as I can tell you who they are and who they knew...

For the prompt " .Please state your current activities and/or employment status", can we include our planned activities and employment for the coming year, until planned medical school matriculation?
.

To be honest I rather they do give more weight on numbers. Everything else just seems so subjective (whether the reviewer is in a good mood, did the same thing, etc) and a matter of how self-glorifying you are.

meh. Some people get in on stats, some get in on who they know, some get in on how they do in interviews etc etc. It's not really something we are likely to change you just have to play the game and find which group you fit in to.

If you're so worried about possibly not getting in when your numbers are "better" than someone else's, then consider withdrawing your application. For medical school in general, admission is around 25% grades/MCAT, 25% "other stuff", and about 50% luck. (Luck = who reviews your application, how familiar they may be with what you've done, etc. etc.)

Then tell me. Otherwise, why focus on something that - for now - you can't help?

lol at least you tell it like it is...i would assume this is the same for near every school 😛

I rubbed a Fat Buddha's belly tonight. :luck:

Thanks for this info! Does it mean that over 3000 applicants send their primary, but don't complete the secondary?

Gah! After submitting, I was reading the copy of my application and realized that their interface turned my apostrophies into questions marks or in one case an "n". Ahhhh! I feel so stupid 🙁

As in, you didn't proofread it after copy/pasting?

Hey zip, how do grades work at UIC? Is it based on a set percentage or a curve? Do people get Honors just from doing the usual or do you really have to bust your butt? Thanks.

Graded on a curve; the PL (passing level) varies with each exam and each class. Honors will depend on the class - typically takes a lot more work in Anatomy/Physiology/Biochem than it does in, say, Human Development.

Would anyone be willing to help me out and take a quick look over some of my secondary responses for this one? I have a limited amount of resources for help with these outside of SDN, and this is literally my #1 school, no exaggeration. I would REALLY appreciate it, because I want to submit them ASAP, but I have to know that they're quality.

Thanks!

Some people should be hearing soon if they want first interviews in mid Sept. I can't stop checking status site hah.

I think that Zip said earlier that interview invites start being handed out this week, so that means sometime Weds/Thurs/Fri
