I got my acceptance letter yesterday! Interviewed 11/16 so they were really on the ball. I also have acceptances at SLU and Creighton, but I am relatively certain KU is where I will end up. Can't pass up the in-state tuition! Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back or "on-hold till March." I can sympathize will all of you because that's where I was last year. I was on-hold till March at KU and on two other school's waitlists last year and had to reapply.

I got my rejection letter today. I interviewed on the 18th. So much for KU... it was my in state choice. Guess a 4.0/31R and a huge heart for medicine isn't enough.

I am sorry to hear that. Those are very good numbers.....perhaps there were some areas in your extra-curriculars that KU did not look favorably upon?

I too am sorry to hear that. I didn't get in last year if it makes you feel better. Hopefully something will work out for you!

Congrats to those accepted, empathy for those rejected...

Anybody interviewing in this current block of interviews? I'm scheduled for Wednesday. Trying not to get too nervous about it.

Good luck to all of those still in limbo!

I don't know... I was a CNA for a year and a half at a hospital (had to quit because of major spine surgery), I'm involved in 3 different research projects at KU (health psychology, genetics lab), have shadowing experience at KU med and in lawrence, have a ton of hobbies... the only thing is maybe they don't think i have enough volunteer experience. I did some a while back at children's mercy, but I just haven't gotten back it after recovering from my surgery. And now I'm just thinking about everything that we talked about in my interview. I was sick that day (had a cold), but I thought (at the time) that it went pretty well.

Is it appropriate to call them and ask what I could have improved upon in my application? If so, who would I ask to talk to?

Call Jason Edwards and ask to make an phone appointment with Sandy McCurdy about your interview. She will call you and tell you what happened.

that's weird. makes no sense. i figured you lacked clinical experience or something. even with you no volunteering, everything you have shouldn't get you straight rejected. that's really weird. i'm sorry to hear that.

call Jason Edwards right now and schedule the phone interview with Sandy Mccurdy. she'll read over with you your entire application AND the notes of your interviewers about you. it has to be the lack of volunteering, altho I would think they'd be more lenient with you because of your spinal injury. still makes no sense why you at least wouldn't get the "on hold til March" message, though. maybe they got some terrible vibe from you from your interview or maybe even recommendations. and yes, ask her about your recommendations. she WILL tell you if they are/were a problem or not. don't forget to ask about them!

Congrats to everyone who got accepted in the last round of interviews! See you in July!

Congrats to all of you guys! It seems like most of you are from Kansas, but have you guys encountered many out of staters at your interviews? I've been complete for awhile and haven't heard a thing. I would love an interview from here 🙂

They usually don't do OOS interviews until late in the application cycle.

Hey guys, congrats to all those accepted, good luck to those still in the process, got my acceptance letter yesterday, see u guys in the Summer!!!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted!

I'm one of the early decision rejects, so I'm waiting until January for my second interview. The wait is killing me, because I'm just ready to go in and kill it again.

When I spoke with Sandy McCurdy about my application after being turned down an EDP slot, she said it was because I'm a relatively new Kansas resident. Everything else looked great... Which is kind of frustrating, but I understand their point.

In any case, the wait is frustrating... But I feel confident.

Any other EDP rejects waiting to interview in January?

Ugh... had a horrible interview, very negative. Oh-well...

Good luck to everybody else.

that is one of the generic answers they like to give. I knew someone they told that to, as well, who was placed on hold or waitlisted or something. he lost his state residency b/c his parents moved out-of-state. so, they told him to regain his KS residency and to reapply. he did just that, and he was straight up rejected the second time. he asked why he was rejected the 2nd time and they told him they didn't think he'd make a good doctor. true story. too bad they didn't tell him that after the 1st time he got rejected huh...

I think the truth is everyone is just applying with about the same numbers, volunteering, etc. it gets pretty subjective and only have so many spots. that's why, eventually, most ppl get in after reapplying over and over because most ppl seem to be bumped up a bit everytime you reapply. it's sad, I know. hang in there, though, my man!

while that story may seem depressing, I also know of EDP rejects who were accepted in January. good luck!

Hey. I interviewed 12/1, and your stats are quite upsetting. Only 10/60 acceptance letters for each interview session? There were fantastic people on my day, and not one of them was an obvious red flag/better-luck-next-time kind of person. Seriously, it seemed like a solid group of people.

Side note: I told a guy, "You're not the competition," and he blanched. 🙂 I should have clarified. I didn't feel competitive with the other interviewees; I felt like it was my game to lose or not.

It's hard to have a good attitude when you hear "everyone with basic MCAT/GPA gets an interview." I was so pleased to get the interview, and I'm disappointed to learn that it's still a less than 50% chance at that point. Kudos to the guy who applied three times. If they don't want me this year, I'll just keep knocking on the door. Congrats to those of you who are already in!

To all of those on hold, a ray of hope and correct mathematical analysis. Enjoy:

60 ppl / interview session
- 10 accepted
- 20 denied
- 30 on hold

Sessions: - Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb (5 Sessions)

Fill to 195-200 spots…Let’s go with 195.

195 Class Spots
50 EDP
25 Special Programs / Deferrals
50 Accepted

195-125 = 70 left over

30 hold * 4 sessions = 120 ppl + 60 (Feb Session) = 180 people waiting until March

70 spots / 180 hopefuls = 39 % Acceptance
50 / 180 Waitlist = 28 % Waitlist
60 / 180 Rejected = 33 % Rejection

Keep your head up Omzy, previous estimates were incorrect and we all can’t be that pessimistic…

Congrats to all those accepted into the class of 2014! I look forward to meeting yall! I wanted to you know there is now a kumed class of 2014 thread!!! It will be a great way to keep discussing...especially for those who dont have facebook🙂..although I do😀

I know Kansas gives high priority to in-state students - is there anybody on this board who is applying from out of state? Have any out-of-staters heard anything yet, or does Kansas wait until the very end to review those applicants? I'm a non-Kansas resident but have some pretty strong ties to the state: I was born in Wichita and lived there for several years as a kid, both my parents were born and raised in Kansas (my mom graduated from KU), and pretty much my entire extended family including siblings, grandparents, aunts, and uncles live in the state. My application has been complete since early October, but I haven't heard a peep yet.

I wouldn't worry yet. Being complete in October is relatively late, and there are plenty of interview groups remaining.

They like to wait until just a few weeks before the interviews to let people know anyway.

I agree with RagingMoose! They wait until about 3 weeks before the interview to send you your invitation, and with the interview season running into February, you definitely still have a shot. Good luck.

Any other EDP rejects waiting to interview in January?

For what it's worth, I was told they'll send out invitations for the January 20-22 block by the end of December.
I have to admit, I'm not looking forward to the post-interview wait (again!). But the interview itself, I'm looking forward to.

Thanks for the good luck wishes guys, I just interviewed there on 11/25 and I think I did much better than I did at KU. I guess I just wait and see what cards I'm dealt now. This might become interesting...😳

Congrats on your Temple interview going well! Hope you get more good news this cycle! :luck:

Does anyone know if KU accepts additional LORs after they've already reviewed your file and given you an invite? A family prac I'm shadowing has offered to write me a letter. Don't want to make her go to the trouble if KU isn't going to accept it, but if they would, I'd be all about that.

Marele!!

I see you have a few other interviews to go, congrats on thos! I'll bet since you had an offer from a physician for a letter, you now have the clinical stuff needed to blow the KU interviewers away. (Whether or not they take letters after files being complete, I have no idea; I am sure Jason could tell you.) Here's to seeing you in July!

Rejected. OOS. 3.98/30mcat. FML
Really sorry to hear that Wolf. I'm sure you'll be accepted somewhere else with your strong stats 👍. Were you interviewed at KU Med in Dec? Did you receive an email? MED page update? paper mail?

It's ok- I am not accepted anywhere yet but have my fair share of interviews. I applied kind of late.

Anywho I was rejected pre-interview. I sent them an in the area notification and they replied with an email saying they looked @ my file and they decided not to give me an invite.

I assume ties to the state are huge at this school? Either way best of luck!!

Hmm yea I think so. There's only KU Med in the state of KS so state residency is important. good luck to u too!

State ties are of enormous importance. Kansas has huge need for physicians, especially in primary care specialties. The chances of them accepting anyone who they don't think will likely stay in KS are minimal.

yes, yes, yes! for YOUR case, it WILL help you. for everyone else, sending additional things would not help them. I remember reading your posts earlier about why you didn't get in post EDP interview. they told you it was your lack of shadowing. considering this new letter is from a doctor who you've been shadowing since September, then this is EXACTLY what you need to fill that hole in your application during EDP. and, yes, you want a letter to confirm your new experience. you can tell them in words during your interview that you have done all this shadowing since the EDP interview, but having a letter confirming it will make them believe it without a doubt.

for anyone else, this letter would not help because the adcom does not edit your "score" after your interview. once you interview, your "score" is entered into the computer and never changes. however, for your case, since you are being re-interviewed after not getting in post-EDP interview, your score is not fixed. they will re-review your file and make adjustments based on that 2nd interview.

so, send that letter, and send it NOW. just include it in an email to that MDapps email (I forget what it is). they'll print it out and put it in your file. send it NOW because you want to make sure it gets in your file before your interview. then, in your interview, you obviously want to focus on your shadowing experiences since September. you control your interview. don't let the interviewer control it. you need to work your shadowing experiences into your answers to the questions they ask you. good luck!!

by the way, after you do more interviews, you'll realize that KU Med (for you) is actually the easiest school to get into. you have the numbers to get into any school. you need that shadowing and volunteer expeience to sell yourself during the interviews, though. those are the EASY things to add to your app. a 12 year old can get these things, so you definitely can 🙂

does anyone know that the chances are of an oos interview? i'm been waiting for months now and they said that if i was deemed worthy for an interview they would email. would it help that i used to live in ks?? also when is the interview season over?

Kansas resident applicants are given first priority for interviews. Most nonresident applicants who are invited to interview will do so in late January or February.
For your information, following are our projected interview dates for the 2010 entering class:
2009: Oct. 26, 27, 28; Nov. 16, 17, 18, 30; Dec. 1, 2
2010: Jan. 6, 7, 8, 20, 21, 22; Feb. 10, 11, 12

This was in the very long e-mail sent along with the supplemental application request. They notify 2-3 weeks before the interview date. So us OOS applicants still have a chance!!! 😀

Rejected. OOS. 3.98/30mcat. FML

Don't feel bad. I am in state, 4.0 GPA/31R MCAT... and I got rejected. I have extensive research experience, clinical experience as a hospital CNA, volunteering, good rec letters, other jobs, personal medical experience, etc... I was REALLY disappointed and honestly a little taken-back when I got my rejection letter. (My username changed... I was previously abi246). I called and talked to Sandy McCurdy a few weeks ago and the only thing that she could conclusively come up with was that the interviewers felt I didn't have enough direct physician contact/shadowing experience-- apparently I didn't convey this very well. I have been shadowing all this fall, and am continuing it through the spring. I am still a little lost as to why I would be flat-out rejected for this. I know what I am getting into as a physician and what to expect from med school and the field of work in general. ::sigh::

I am still crossing my fingers for Iowa-Carver COM and about 7 other schools!! Good luck to all you still in the runnings!

So happy when I saw my invitation for interview!!!
It's unfortunate to see several ppl have had poor experiences... but I'm looking at it from a me-only perspective - I know the insanely high caliber of ppl I'm competing with, but like someone said earlier, it's my game to win or lose.
I finally started seeing interview invitations, so it took a while, but 3 so far and I've only been rejected by 7 schools out of the 22 I applied to! (poor GPA in earlier undergrad even tho great MCAT = problems getting in)

Jan here I come! Hope to see some of you in August!!!

Btw, thanks to whomever mentioned the physician contact. I will be sure to highlight my mentor relationships with physicians in my jtwo years working at the hospital, rather than focusing mostly on patient contact. 😀

Hey guys I was wanting some OOS feedback, I am OOS my secondary was complete in mid Nov and I haven't heard anything back yet and didn't know if any other OOS applicants had been rejected pre-interview or interviewed and/or how long after you were complete did you hear back from KU. Thanks

A few posts back, someone quoted exactly what I will summarize.

KU generally interviews OOS applicants later in the cycle. (Jan. - Feb.) No one gets notified until about 3 weeks prior to the interview. I wouldn't be worried at all yet.

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!

See you all in the summer!!

Just goes to show that you shouldn't count those chickens until they're hatched. Congratulations!! Now you really are on the road from RT to MD!

Too true, too true. Maybe he was just trying to rattle my cage? I guess I did know what I was talking about when I created that stupid name several years ago! I wish that there was a way to change your user name (without starting a new account). I've thought of so many other names that I would rather use.🙂

Thank you again for the congratulations!
