Too true, too true. Maybe he was just trying to rattle my cage? I guess I did know what I was talking about when I created that stupid name several years ago! I wish that there was a way to change your user name (without starting a new account). I've thought of so many other names that I would rather use.🙂

Thank you again for the congratulations!

Congratulations!

I have my second interview a week from tomorrow, so I'm praying that things work out better this time.

My interviews last time were pleasant, and I left feeling I had competently demonstrated my passion for learning and serving others in a medical setting. But, as results show, one can never know.

Everyone at KU has been pleasant and honest, and it really has affirmed my desire to enroll there and eventually practice in Kansas.

Now just to get in... hmmm.... :xf:

Good luck, I hope that your interview goes really well! My first interview last year (applied the last day they took applications) went well - I was rejected post hold. This time around, I thought the interview was brutal - but I got an acceptance! Who knows what kind of backwards world we live in.

I agree with your assessment of KU. I have several friends who have either graduated from KU med, or are current students. I think that they really treat their students well, and don't BS them (which is rare nowadays).

Keep us posted on how your interview goes, wishing you the best. (oh, and thanks for the congratulations!)

Getting excited for my interview Jan 8th! Anyone a co-interviewee that day? 😀

Guys!! One serious question! My friend just got rejected post-interview and now she's crying. She asked me a question and I don't know it. Can she email her interviewers and ask questions (why this and that...and what more is needed)? Is that a good/acceptable/bad move? Or does she need to go through Dean McCurdy first? She's about to make a move and I don't know what to tell her!

Have her call the admissions office and set up a time to talk with Dean McCurdy. She is really good about letting you know why you didn't get accepted, and will give you things to work on for next cycle. I would NOT email the interviewers.

Sorry to hear about her news, tell her to keep her head up and try again next year. If she wants it bad enough, it will happen!

I agree with RT2MD here. Do not contact interviewers except to thank them for their time. Dean McCurdy will go over her application, interview, and any improvements that can be made.

Encourage her to keep chugging...

K thanks guys. I told her not to contact the interviewers for future reasons. It seems to be best to go through things with Dean McCurdy. For my part, I am on hold and will find out soon enough. About the salaries, they look reasonable to me and they're reported by the Lawrence Journal World...you could always ask the people on that list to confirm the reported salaries lol

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this thread. Just wonder if there's any OOS interviews yet? It's Jan already and I'm getting worried 🙁 Thanks

Good Luck Drak!

Don't give up hope yet! You still have a few months. I am oos but have a significant connection including two degrees from KU (accepted around Thanksgiving). Good Luck!

Woot for Friday! This will be my 2nd interview. My first (Case Western) was amazing in how relaxed, comfortable, and supportive it was. Hope KU will be the same!!!

Now, a noob question:

For thank you letters, do you send them to the interviewers themselves? Or to the admissions dept/committee? Both seem a little.....awkward.

You don't need to write thank you letters. KU will tell you this during your interview day. If you feel compelled, though, you can send your thank you notes to the admissions office and ask them to forward the letters to your interviewers.

KU interviews are really relaxed. Good luck!

has any oos heard about interviews yet? with the exception of tomorrow, there are only 6 days left for the oos!!!

...and another option is to write down the name of your interviewers and send the thank you directly to them...It's a personal touch and kinda old school...Whatever you decide, the thank you will certainly not change the evaluation of your interview...GOOD LUCK!!

January interviewees -- how did they go? Any news????

What are the dates left for interviews?

I am OOS, complete at the end of November, and haven't heard anything yet...

I've learned not to put the cart before the horse. So, I'm not going to base expectations off judgments of how I felt the interviews went.

With that said, I felt they were both pleasant and thorough. So, I had a good combination of pressure and relaxation and left with a sentiment somewhere between 'sunny' and 'cloudy'. I find mostly sunny days are my favorites, anyway 🙂

In any case, I think the committee is next meeting tomorrow evening. We'll see how things pan out!

Good luck to everyone and here's to a big reunion for us all come July 22!

I find always sunny days are my favorite lol. That show is awesome. Good luck with everything! - Hopefully there's a fast turn around time with decisions.

maybe they are only doing oos interviews in feb??

no, they do OOS interviews all year round at every interview session, starting in October. they only interview OOS applicants who have ties to KS. even then, doesn't mean you'll get one. they just prefer in-state applicants because they are a state school. simple as that. hope you hear soon. good luck!

I wouldn't start freaking out until next friday. Good luck, but the odds are just awful for OOS.

[(100/1800)*100] = 5.56% Interviewed
[(30/100)*100] = 30 % Accepted from Interview
[(.0556*.30)*100] = 1.67 % Chance that both happen.

This doesn't account for state ties, however I think the hill that OOS people have to climb is pretty steep.

This is from KU's website...

Special note for out-of-state applicants:
The University of Kansas is a state-supported institution that gives primary consideration to Kansas residents. As an out-of-state applicant, you should review the following paragraph to determine your interest in pursuing a position in the KU School of Medicine.
While we will only accept candidates who are academically qualified to meet the intellectual rigors of a medical career, our focus on out-of-state applicants is to select those who will contribute to the depth and breadth of backgrounds and life experiences of the entering class. We carefully consider those personal characteristics deemed necessary to develop into a highly competent and compassionate physician. We seek applicants who have a sound awareness of issues in medicine and who have demonstrated their commitment to serve others. For the 2009 entering class, KU received more than 2200 applications for a class of 175. Of the 1800 non-resident applicants, approximately 100 were interviewed and 30 accepted.

do that many oos apply to KU? 1800/2200 so therefore only a couple hundred ks residents apply there?

Yeah, the number hovers right around 400 each year. About 145 of a 175 class are IS. (82.9%)

So 36.3% of Kansas residents get in and less than 2% of OOS get in.

-A side note... A huge number of the people that get into KU (IS) are re-applicants...

Just a quick question for those who have heard from admissions during the regular decision process...

Are the decisions coming via email, or snail mail? I remember that EDP applicants heard via email, but I thought I heard a few things during regular interviews that hinted at snail mail...

Just curious. Thanks!

Yup, snail mail it is. Mine came the Monday after the decision... Granted there was Christmas in there as well.

Good luck!

January interviewees -- how did they go? Any news????

Well, this is totally unexpected, but I actually withdrew my application at KU today after receiving an acceptance and scholarship from Columbia's new rural medicine program. I loved everything about Columbia, especially the rural care emphasis in the Bassett Program, so I guess everything worked out!

Dean McCurdy was really nice about me withdrawing my interview spot - I felt bad about doing it on such short notice - but she said they were actually able to invite another applicant to take my place in 2 days. I'm glad someone else will get a chance at KU. It's a fantastic school.

So thanks for all the support and well-wishes, and good luck to all of you! :luck:

Hey everyone, just wanted to post my excitement and see what advice you guys have as I just got and email with and interview invite Feb 10 th!!! I am so excited I love KU and Kansas City and would love to go to school here. I applied July, Secondary complete Nov 9th (late), interview Jan 19th for Feb 10th for a timeline. Ive read the interview feedback thread but just wanted to know if anyone had some insight as to what they want for out of state applicants as I know its hard to get in to KU as OOS.

Ok, I guess that's the last of the invites.

...Now you can freak out.

Sorry if the interview invite didn't come your way. 🙁

I'm an OOS applicant and received an interview on Feb 12th. For those who have been accepted; do you have any KU specific tips for a succesful interview? Also I may not be able to make it in for the reception the evening before. Is there any benefit to attending the reception, or will missing it not have a significant impact on my application. Thanks for your help and hopefully I'll get to meet you all July 22nd.

What reception?

Just have a good convo for your interview. Good luck!

There's a welcome reception from 4-6 on either the 10th or 11th (depending on the day of your interview). My wife is from Kansas and we will be seeing family that week. I don't know if I will make it to KC for the welcoming reception but will be sure to attend if it will improve my chances the next day. Any insight is appreciated.

I didn't know they had receptions. Maybe I overlooked something when I interviewed. Anyway, doubtful it will increase your chances because the selection commitee members probably won't be there.

Dude. EDP did NOT get a reception! Dang it!!! 🙂 ha ha

CONGRATS Marele!!!! I'm really happy for you. I'm sad we won't be classmates, but I think you made the right decision!!!! Seriously, best wishes to you in the future!!! MCAT class was fun, but not THAT fun. 🙂 😛

The reception that he is referring to is one that is held to welcome minority students, not sure if its held every interview round or just for this one. Read about it on the interview feedback forum.

The interview email did state that the reception was hosted by the Office of Cultural Enrichment and Diversity but did not specify it is for minorities only. That said I probably will not attend because none of the accepted applicants that have posted on here previously have attended.

I can't speak for everyone, but I was never informed of any sort of reception (I was accepted EDP). It is possible that this is unique to your interview day and/or group so just because people here didn't go might not give any insight as to whether or not you should.

If I was offered to go to a welcoming reception I would take the opportunity to meet the administration leave a good impression. If the school is going to go out of their way to retain or recruit minority students then I think that as a minority you would want to see what options the school has for you.

That's where the confusion came in for me. I'm not a minority student and nobody seemed to be familiar with the reception. But if previous interview feedback indicates that it was intended to welcome minority applicants then I won't attend. Although I do look forward to meeting all of the other applicants, and hope to continue our medical education together. Good luck to the other applicants interviewing that week. Rock Chalk!

Any of the January interviewees receive notification?

Hoping for good news all around! Rock Chalk!

Not yet!!! Checking my mailbox right after postal delivery ^_^ and my email...and my phone msgs.... >_<
