It would be interesting to know what the ADCOM is looking for in the last few interviewees considering there are thousands of us still on hold. I'm sure a couple of highly qualified applicants slipped through and the rest of us are toast.

"Highly Desirable - December decision"

Oh well... From last year it appears almost none got off "highly desirable."

This isn't so terrible -- I thought this too from last year's thread but the twitter feed squelched the rumor I almost spread. They said they will let some people off the deferral list the week of Christmas, and at the interview they said only about 20 people are deferred this way. Someone else may have mentioned that Dir. Ruiz has said in the past that most deferrals eventually get in, but that's unsubstantiated. Anywho, I don't think the 2 people in last year's thread were representative of the deferral group.

Just got my acceptance today! I'm applying MSTP, so maybe that's why it was a bit delayed... though I didn't get the cool video you guys apparently got 🙁

Does anyone know approximately how many merit scholarships are given out each year?

+1. I'm interested in this too. I know there are about ten full scholarships, but how many 3/4 or 1/2 tuition? If anyone knows I will appreciate it.

Twitter: "After much deliberation we've decided a majority of remaining interview offers will be allocated to Michigan residents."

This + my unending "under review" status = 99.9% guaranteed rejection. dang👎

Wow. And I wrote an update letter for Michigan two days ago. Thanks for wasting my time. Go Illini! 😀

At the interview, they said that they have about $2M in scholarship money that they allocate to accepted applicants. Dir. Ruiz said that they have a meeting in March and decide where the money goes. It didn't sound like there were any hard and fast rules about the number of full or 1/2 scholarships. He seemed to indicate that it's more dependent on which applicants they want to recruit.

Imagine how I feel. I'll be the first member of my family for 3 generations not to go to U of M.

Fingers crossed, at least BU might say yes.

Can medical schools see what schools you get into?

I'm asking this because I was wondering if other acceptances affect the scholarship process at UM.

no they can't until may 15

Dear Adcom:

"When an applicant cancels their interview less than 24 hours prior-we can't recover review time or fill the spot--poor form indeed ;-( "

I just need a 1 hour notice. I'll be there!!!

Haha, send an e-mail to any one of the remaining "File Complete - Under Review" applicants and I'm sure they would gladly drop everything and go 🙁

seems like someone seriously pissed them off considering that twitter update and the one they posted more recently. a shame they aren't taking some of us who are dying for interviews

does twitter let us respond so we can tell them we can be there in 24 hours?

😀

I can see why this would be annoying to them, but would they rather someone who maybe just got an acceptance in the previous 24 hours and is no longer considering Michigan show up and waste everyone's time? I mean, if it was me, I would still attend the interview and go through the motions, but I can see why someone might decide to cancel with such short notice.

haha yesss. i'm all the way in california but i'd book the first ticket i could get out to michigan if i got a last minute invite. though i am kind of surprised that they don't just start calling some mich residents, especially since they were planning to extend most of the invites to them anyway. 24 hours seems somewhat workable (though boooo to that applicant), but perhaps it was more effort than it was worth.

I hope the Adcom doesn't outright reject me because of this post -- When a school interviews & selects only "top" candidates -- aren't they playing with fire, in the sense -- these candidates will have multiple acceptances from top school's, and most of them are pretty much going to go to the school, which offers them the most money. So -- and I am sure that some of the top candidates will choose MI over everyone else no matter what -- where's the love for U of M in these candidates? These candidates are bound to treat the school as just another feather in their hat.

Or maybe it just doesn't matter. I am confused.

When you're a school like Michigan, you can afford to, I suppose.

"We understand some of you would interview on short notice but we don't have that luxury re; file prep/review, hosting and AEC review : - ( "

i love that they responded to us on twitter.

Dear Michigan:

My name is Rachel and I'd love an interview!
Please and Thank you!
PS. I promise not to cancel.

I just sent them an email updating my file. Then I remembered that UM is one of the few schools to have application for this on their website. Most schools don't, and you have to email. I hope that wasn't one of the "informalities of communication" they were talking about on twitter. If so then oops but I'm expecting a rejection at this point anyways with or without pissing them off with some sort of informality.

I think that unless someone says or does something really egregious on this forum (showing that he or she is a bad person, e.g. cursing someone else out) even if the ADCOM can figure out the identity of the person posting they should not use it to evaluate us.

The process is really stressful and students should have a safe place to post questions and comments about the process without the fear that our postings will hurt our application.

I doubt that when they refer to a lack of courtesy it does not apply to anything on this forum. I'm sure they only read this to help keep us informed and do not take our negative/inappropriate comments personally.

I sure hope so. The fact that they're monitoring this thread all season has made me kind of uncomfortable...but just because U-M is open about the fact that they're reading doesn't mean that other schools aren't doing the same exact thing in secret. On the one hand it would be very unfair for them to evaluate the few applicants they can identify negatively based on their comments in this forum. SDN is meant for speculation/commiseration among applicants, regardless of the accuracy of the info we share or the neuroticism we exhibit. On the other hand such evaluation on the part of employers, schools, etc. is becoming an inevitable part of the digital age and having an online identity...sigh. If you're stalking me, U-M, please take a look at my MDapps and come to the epiphany already that I would almost certainly attend your school if you let me in! 😛

seems like it would be way too much effort to hunt people down based on their posts and MDapps for something little. Now if you were being really obnoxious and insane after you interview with them or something, it might be more worth their time to look to see who you are. They've got too many applicants. Plus it'd be a lot easier to look at people's unprotected facebooks like employers sometimes do.

All in all I think we should calm down on the paranoia. I was totally kidding with my earlier post about being informal. I didn't mean to cause people to fret over what they post

i agree.

on another note, if any of you ever decide to apply for a job, please do not facebook friend the recruiter (me). thanks.

that is all

I have my interview scheduled for January, and today noticed that UM has a 1 semester biochemistry requirement!!! I graduated a year ago and NEVER took biochem, so are they expecting me to take it (assuming I receive an acceptance) before enrolling in the fall?? aghhhh

Yes it is a pre-req. You can be admitted for most schools on condition you finish all the pre-reqs before matriculation.....

You are already dropping acceptances brother... so what's the aghhh about?

the "agghhh" was frustration over the thought of loosing the summer before med school to biochem. i thought we were suppose to "relax."

Since some schools like asking hypothetical questions on the interview, I have a couple for you guys.

Where would you go

A) Full Ride at Wayne State University or Michigan with no scholarship

B) Full Ride at Michigan or Harvard with no scholarship

B) Michigan -- No Q about it!

Hey Mich, why are we still "under review" for 3+ months, if you've decided to give your last few invites to Mich residents. If the books have been closed, I don't think it's unfair to expect formal notice. Thanks.

They may actually read your suggestion and pull the plug. Oh UMich 🙁

They said a majority will be Mich residents. That could mean 51/100 or 90/100 who knows. They said they'd be closing files more rapidly this month so it looks like they are at least trying to let people know when they are out of the running

didn't they say 99% would be michigan residents? sorry if that bursts your bubble, but that's just what i understood.
