Just got this status update - "Application Screening Completed
Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Additional reviews may take several months as we compare groups of applicants. Thank you for your patience."

Is that the same thing as "File Closed"? If not, what does that mean practically speaking, that I'm not technically "closed" but I might as well be at this point in the cycle? Sorry if this has been answered 30000 times before...

It is not closed until it says "file closed"

pretty messed up that one of the applicants never properly notified the admissions office that he/she was canceling an interview invite (check twitter)..people here are begging for an interview..another wasted invite...

Yeah, they do seem pretty mad about that. They obviously do put a lot of work into screening people, including coming in on weekends, etc, and if they read this board they probably get an earful of all the complaints from those waiting for interviews, so I understand their reaction. They probably debated heavily about inviting this person, and then the applicant doesn't give U-M a second thought.

Yeah, I really couldn't believe that.

The Michigan admissions office deserves better. I know people have complained, but by comparison to other schools, Michigan's admissions process gets a Gold Star A+++ rating.

👍

even though i didnt receive an interview i must give the admissions committee an A+ also for at least ATTEMPTING to keep us in the loop with the tracker updates and twitter...no other med school I applied to did that...too bad UMich puts sooo much emphasis on numbers, i.e. MCAT

Yeah, as soon as they know something on your file, they'll let you know.

I really appreciate that. I interviewed on a Friday and was accepted the following Wednesday.

Hey you were accepted here? Wow, congrats!

from the twitter: I'll deal with no show candidate next week

what does this mean lol?!?!?!

+1. I interviewed at another school in December and they told us we had to wait until the deadline (March 31st) to hear our results. I wish I could have gotten the chance to interview at Michigan with how much they keep people in the loop. This school is amazing. The other school doesn't even have a status page they update.

I agree. I'm in town from Denver and would have loved to get that invite. That person deserves to get black balled.

I'm glad they are so angry about that, shows that they do consider everyone they interview very carefully. I would have loved to have been there last Friday, as you guys did too. I'm sure other schools get angry but UofM is the only one we twitter posts like that haha.

This is officially my favorite thread to check. Everytime I go on sdn its right up there on the top haha.

Because I apparantly now have no life other than checking this site, I have come up with a theory about the inner workings of the umms adcom:
They are going through two or three sequential screenings, each time eliminating more and more candidates. They may be splitting the screenings up among themselves. At this point, everyone who is still eligible for an interview is on hold or "application screening complete" and they will probably notify the last interviews all at once around monday.

i believe they get access to the schools the kid has been accepted at in march. perhaps a phone call to the other AdComs?

only if they accept the kid which...methinks isn't happening

well i thought about that. if they were realllllly interested in screwing this kid over, they could accept him internally but never inform him, simply to get access to that other information.

not likely though. maybe we will hear more next week?

I interviewed on October 30. I had a great experience overall and loved the whole thing. Having three interviews is kinda intense ... kinda like a marathon, but all my interviewers were really laid back

Masturhu, i agree with you. I could not be more thankful for what they did.
Flextime quizzes are awesome. The students with whom I spoke during my interview love the set up. And you couldn't go wrong with Michigan. On that note, when did you interview?

So I know the committee meets today, January 13th. Does that mean we find out today or tomorrow?

Thanks.

Congrats!!! It's not a mistake they always seem to accept earlier than what their Twitter says in case there is a problem. Maybe they just meant the status page would change tomorrow but the video means it is official.

By e-mail or what? I didn't get anything 🙁
...via owl!

you have to understand that I'm watching Harry Potter right now. Hope I either cheered you up by laughing because you understood it or laughing because I'm going to medical school and still watch Harry Potter on a very regular basis. Whichever it may be, don't get down!

Thanks for trying. Which one are you watching?

Can anyone get into the accepted student facebook page? I've sent requests to join three times and it never works.

From a Johns Hopkins pre-med advising document:

"The decision to grant you an interview commits the resources of the professional school admissions process to you for the interview day and, of necessity, eliminates another candidate from the interview process. If you are offered an interview, take the first available appointment and make plans to keep this appointment. Canceling an interview or not showing up causes great problems for a professional school, for our future applicants to that school, and often for the HP adviser who then gets a phone call from that school's dean asking for help in assuring that our other applicants will appear for interviews. If an emergency arises, see the HP adviser immediately to discuss the issues and the appropriate response."

Based on that, I'd assume they'll contact the pre-med advisor at this person's school and let them know etc.

seems a little weak honestly.

i've never even met the pre-health advisor at my university. it's not like they could do something to me.

A little less weak if you come from a school with committee letters:

"Dear School X,

We recently wrote a LOR on behalf of 'Delinquent Student #1', and would like to retract our enthusiastic recommendation due to character concerns. We hope you understand.

Sincerely,
Pre-Med Advisor
Executioner"
