In regards to the MCAT scores, at what point is it a waste of time to apply to such a competitive school?
 
There bottom 10% are:
Writing: O
Verbal: 9
Biological: 11
Physical Science: 10

There averages are Q, 11, 13, 13, respectively.

I applied with R, 8, 14, 11; not expecting to much, though.

You cannot get in if you do not try!

What does this mean? Rejected? 🙁

its basically "we don't want to reject you because you could be a good candidate but we want to wait until we have more people to compare you to before we make a decision" so then they'll send out invites to all the people they think "omg we have to have them!" and then later in the cycle they'll go back and say "ok we have X # of spots left, lets look over all these hold people again. Then you'll get compared to others and they'll make a decision
 
Hey guys, anyone want to share your mean of transportation/accommodation for the interview day?
Which hotel do you guys go for?

Anyone who are going to the 8/28 interview and want to share a room with me? I haven't booked the hotel room yet.
( I'm a guy afterall).

This will be my first out of state interview, so I really really want to have someone to stay and go with me if possible.

I'd be nervous about sharing a hotel with someone I don't know. Hell for all any of us know you could be the SDN killer (a la the craigslist killer)
 
lol SDN killer... the ultimate way to reduce competition.

anyway i grew up in ann arbor and know the town inside and out, if anyone needs help with hotels, dining recommendations, etc... i'm sure UMich gives you all plenty of info but probably not on where to eat 😉

just pm me if you have questions. this is me living vicariously through all of you who have interviews because i bet i'm not getting one 😳
 
Why would you get a hotel room? Stay with a student host and save a bunch of cash.

Hey, have you heard of "Microtel Inn and Suites"? Is there shuttle availbe from airport to this inn?

there's tons of airport shuttles but most of them hang out downtown for students, like there are always some hanging around outside the Michigan Union which is on State St. that hotel you mentioned is quite a hike from downtown so i don't know if it has its own shuttles, it's not in a very "studenty" area. i've had a lot of good experience with this company http://www.selectride.com/ for airport transportation.

It'll be available by the time of your interview, most likely. You could also try asking people in the Class of 2013 Michigan thread if any of them can house you. Or, call the admissions office and ask them if there's anything you can do.

I mean, it's up to you, obviously. Personally I'm going to do everything in my power to never, ever pay for a hotel. I'll use www.couchsurf.com if I have to, or sleep in the airport.

3.9+ and 39, no auto-invite. Doesn't really matter to me, because there are regular invites, but I just wonder which schools they think are good enough.
 
OMG, I got non-auto invite! I didn't get an email, but when I checked my status online, I already had an invitation! I've been checking everyday, and it finally paid off.

Makes no sense, I'm from a no-name liberal arts college in Iowa that has never sent a student to UMMS, and my stats are almost identical to yours and I got one. This process is a crapshoot. 😕

Edit: Just saw on your mdapps that you're MD/PhD... that would be why no auto-interview I'm guessing.

Dude i have a 4.0/38...from UIC.. no auto invite, weird, its all good.

I was complete the 13th too, id die for an interview,

congrats man.

i just checked online and was offered an interview but never received an email. sec completed: 7/29
 
I emailed and asked admissions what the criteria for auto invite, their response:

"We consider MCAT, GPA, and our Director's discretion"

Hmm..so its not all just computer, they do somewhat review your file. Is that bad news for kids with high MCAT, GPA, but no auto?
 
lol..why would that be bad news? They can't offer EVERYONE an auto invite. I'm sure there have been plenty of applicants with high gpa/mcat and non auto who went on to get in. Plus, it dosen't mean that all applicants with an auto will get in. it's just part of this weird process that we call med school application. just roll with it. i'm sure you'll be fine..especially if you have high numbers gpa mcat. look at aamc stats...those with high numbers have a higher chance of getting in. don't worry.🙂👍
 
No I agree with you its not bad, but it makes you curious what makes someone auto-invite material, and what deficiency made someone non-auto material.
 
I don't think it's a deficiency, per se. Maybe they have a certain number of auto invites they can extend per day, and they met the quota for that day before they got to your application and they put you in a separate batch for normal interview. all you need is an interview. don't worry about the rest. plus, any perceive "deficiency" can be addressed during the interview. just look at it as an opportunity to shine in your interview. if they choose not to extend you an interview, that dosen't necessarily mean you're a failure or anything. maybe u just weren't a fit for the school, and that is perfectly ok. you can get in elsewhere and become a physician, which is the ultimate goal, correct?
 
that may be possible, but im curious where they draw the line. Because they dont have enough time to review those ppl indepth, they look at teh scores, mcat, and then quickly decide.

Either way, whether auto or non-auto an interview is great. Just have to wait..

Research with pub pending, teaching, volunteering, leadership. MCAT sciences are average for U of M but verbal is a little lower than their average. Although, from what I gather, U of M usually accepts outstanding applicants first and puts most others on hold for later. Apparently the majority of U of M matriculants are put on hold at some point during the application cycle.
