Hello all,

I'm a re-applicant who applied for my first time in 2009, so it's been a couple years. I'm currently working on this secondary and am wondering what your opinions are on re-using chunks for my old essay for the "Why Crieghton?" question.

Honestly, my application has changed significantly since I last applied, but my reasons for applying to Creighton have not. I'm stressing community service as a driving force for applying, but much of what I wrote in my old essay discusses the institution itself (ie their core values, strategic plan, environment, what I've heard from current medical students).

I don't want to look lazy and send in the same thing, but my old essay was pretty darn good (it was the rest of my application that was not so hot 🙁).

Is it OK to use chunks of the old one with some new info here and there?

Hi people
I have always had problems writing essays on WHY THIS SCHOOL.
I couldn't find anything very special about the school and I have never been to Olmaha. Would anyone please tell me what is great about Creighton?

Thanks

I have been reusing essays for many schools this cycle. Some of the schools say specifically that if what you wrote hasn't changed and is still true, there is no reason to force something new out. You may want to edit it again and see if there is a better way to express your ideas, but overall I haven't been trying to come up with 2000 characters of bs just to have a new essay.

anyone having trouble logging into the Creighton secondary app webpage?

anyone having trouble logging into the Creighton secondary app webpage?

My secondary page is not working at ALL. it hasn't worked for the past three days when I have been trying to fill it out and submit. I type one word in for an essay and it says its 604 characters... won't upload my picture.. UGH I will have to call on friday if this is not resolved by then.. don't they want my money??😕

When I get those kinds of problems, I clean out all of the files from my temporary internet folder and try again.

Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive way to get more info about Creighton like the specifics of its curriculum i.e. whether it is organ system's based integrative tests or more like a traditional curriculum, any special programs that they have, etc.

I'm having a hard time writing why creighton. I applied in truth because it was recommended by those in charge of the SMP but know nothing about the school so wanted to know if there was an online view book or something. I am unable to find one on the website. Or do I just need to scroll through the links individually one by one???

This may help:

This may have been posted elsewhere, but does your AMCAS application have to be verified before you get a secondary app?

Most of the time, yes, but some schools have been known to send out secondaries before the primary is verified.

Another interviewee here....

3.9ish sGPA
32S/ OOS

i was complete the first week of august

I had the secondary for a while. Just got it submitted yesterday though cuz I was sitting on the why creighton question. Once someone gave the pdf above it became easier. Also I was busy with some stuff, mostly studying for retaking the mcat. didn't want to post that out loud but I already did in the mcat thread so no sense in keeping quiet about why the delays in apps.
Good luck with the retake! I'm sure the new scores will be great. I ended up taking the exam three times. ughhhh. The second time was before I even knew my first scores -- I got family pressure to retake because I probably walk out of the exam not feeling too hot (like everyone else).

I was complete 8/4 and have heard NOTHING. looks like I was passed over with the interview invitations? 🙁

I was complete early to mid July...so I should be the one worried about being passed over. There doesn't look like there's a "set in stone" order for interview invites, so I wouldn't be too worried JUST YET about not getting an invitation.

You should probably begin to worry in about a week, when a "steady stream" of invitations goes out to people past your date. I'm already in that boat.

Interviewing 8/27! I got the Hosting Program email today and it says you need to submit the host request form/payment no later than 9 days prior to your interview...my interview is in 9 days 🙁

App complete: 7/23
Interview invite: 8/2

I thought I was passed over but I just got an invite yesterday. My secondary was complete on 7/13. I wouldn't worry yet.

That's not true at all. Last year I was complete in late July/early August and I didn't get an interview until February 19th. Even though I didn't get in, I was close, and had to wait months before I was offered an interview at all.

So for everyone else: don't worry if you don't get an interview invite before everyone else or immediately after receiving your secondary... There are a LOT of factors that go into the process.

That said, keep your heads up, you've still got a chance!

Well, by worry, I mean "chalk up as rejected silently" and forget about the school for the time being until May. Granted, it could go either way...I've already assumed I've been passed over, so that any news that indicates otherwise comes as a surprise.

In a very successful attempt at putting off writing secondary essays, I spent the last few hours making this sweet excel sheet to help me keep track of the status of all my applications. Then I thought, "Maybe other people would also find this useful/distracting." So I put it up online here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?evqpv17j70olmgm

It's an excel sheet, and uses two macros (so be sure to have them enabled!). Unfortunately, I think you need to have Excel 2007 to use it because of the conditional formatting. I haven't tried it in 2003 though, so I guess I don't really know. Anyway, enjoy!

PS- I haven't tested it very much, so if there are bugs then I apologize 🙂

Hi all,
I'm re-taking the MCAT so I have been very slow as far as secondaries are concerned. I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to critique my secondary for Creighton?

Thanks in advance!

I'm a late applicant this cycle...took a late MCAT. From everything I heard about this school, all from fellow SDNers, I think I would really enjoy it here. Never been to Omaha but the fact that it's a well known mid-sized city makes the location so much better than those of many other med schools. Also I don't know why but I think I'd be happy at Creighton because of its people focus and Jesuit tradition. Now I have to sit down and write a good essay on why Creighton though🙁

I've already submitted my Creighton secondary and am waiting for an invite. Fingers crossed. Re-taking the MCAT and doing secondaries is a serious work load. I can read your secondary. Just send it as a message on SD.

Hey everyone, just wanted to chime in and wish you luck for this upcoming year. I just started my M4 year at Creighton and absolutely love it here (so you've been forewarned, I am biased!). Last cycle I did my best to answer questions and I'll do my best to do the same for your group. Feel free at any point to PM me if you have any 'non-public' questions.

A few things:
1) Stay with a host if you can! It's a great way to get to know what it's like to be a student, to not have to worry about getting a ride to/from the airport and interview day, and it's wicked cheap compared to staying at hotels.
2) I'm not sure how prominently it's advertised, but especially for you west-coasters, don't forget about the Phoenix track. If you don't know, it's the track by which 42 students from each class spend their M3 and M4 years down in Phoenix at St. Joseph's/Barrow. As an aside...I'm actually down here (Phoenix) for this month and absolutely love it, so if you AZ locals have any questions, say hi!
3) I forget what 3 was supposed to be, so for now, best of luck!

I am from AZ and the Phoenix track is definitely a plus to this medical school to me. St. Joe's & Barrows are terrific for training because the vast patients that you see. I did a lot of shadowing at both. I also am awaiting new mcat scores, so I :xf: hope when those get back in a week I will get an interview here. How are you liking phoenix right now?? (I hope you have access to a pool!) Also, how do you like the rotations down here? Which one are you doing?

Just curious, but how are the sleeping arrangements usually done when staying with a host? Do they usually have a couch or cot or air mattress you can use? Or do you usually sleep on the floor? Do you bring your own sheets or sleeping bag?

I'm nervous about staying with a host because I would hate to wake up on the day of my interview with my back killing me or from being too uncomfortable to sleep.

Hm, I think you get your own bed or at least a couch and wouldn't need a sleeping bag.

Phoenix is less than ideal right now given my midwestern roots and dislike for walking outside and feeling as though I stepped right into an oven. With that said, things have been great inside the hospital. I've done 1 month of pediatrics and now psychiatry here, so I can say that 1/6 of the core rotations will be really good. As for the pool, I'm unfortunately without access, so I'm essentially using local coffee shops as my heat havens!

One of the stipulations for hosting is that you are able to provide either a bed to sleep on or the most ridiculously comfortable couch EVER. So, you don't have to bring anything - no pillows (unless you have a magically good luck'd one), no sleeping bags, no nothin'. Also, if you're allergic to cats or rabbits or iguanas or nameyouranimal, you can specify that so that you don't wake up on interview day looking like a tired, sneezy mess.

I should also add the number three from above that I just remembered. Every year, and I mean, EVERY single year, people start to freak out because Tuesday of their interview week rolls around and they haven't heard from their host. When I was the chair of my class admissions committee as a M2, I had the pleasure of fielding countless calls about that. So, just to prepare everyone, the list of interviewees (no names, just preferences for M/F, allergies, smoking, etc) doesn't go out until the weekend before. The hosts aren't typically solidified until Tuesday, so don't freak out unless you haven't heard by Wednesday afternoon. It's not the best system in terms of pre-med anxiety, but it has never failed us.

So yeah, good luck and stuff!

I just want to say thanks to everyone helping out and offering advice and information! Your time and consideration is well-appreciated!

OH SYNAPSE - Thank you so much for the response. If I didn't realize about the pillow/sheets, I would forget to mention I am allergic to down sheets/dust. I would have woken up with some mega red swollen eyes. hahaha.

For any non-traditional Creighton applicants, how are you determining what is "recent" for their letter requirements? I notice the following criteria for non-traditional applicants:

"If you completed your undergraduate degree on or before September 2008, please have three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your recent scientific work or study experiences."

For me, I have two professors with whom I've recently taken classes (this past year). All other academic experiences are before that and I have no scientific employment experiences (different industry). Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!!

to those who interviewed today i just wanted to say that you all looked very spiffy when you came into the anatomy lab 🙂

i haven't been at creighton long but i LOVE it so far and can answer questions related to the interview process if you'd like!

good luck everyone i hope to meet some of you next year!

Can anyone who has interviewed chime in? I have my interview here in one week, and I was wondering what you all thought? Where there any unexpected questions, etc.?

Also, to those who are current students, what do you feel is your favorite part about the school?

Does Creighton provide us info about who our interviewers are going to be? If so, where can i find it?

The interviews are really laid back and everyone is very nice. There weren't any unexpected questions and nothing I considered difficult. Just the usual "Why medicine? Why medicine and not nurse, pa, etc?" and "Why Creighton?"

My faculty interviewer really only asked me two questions which makes me nervous, seemed sorta odd.

It was definitely a good first interview because of how laid back and easy they made it though, so I wouldn't worry.

Interviews were great, really laid back. I got two really nice, talkative interviewers so it turned into more of a conversation than an interview. The faculty member even said he learned something from me/gained a new insight for what I had to say about one question, so hopefully that means bonus points, haha. The biggest thing I saw from them was they wanted students who were true to themselves and what your true interests are outside of medicine and how those add to your life, not just the run of the mill answers you think they want to hear.

Does anyone know how Creighton looks at mcat scores? Do they take the latest one, best total score, or best section scores?

For interview day, is it looked down upon to bail before the optional dinner? Just trying to save money here and Omaha doesn't have any flights out after 7:30pm.

I don't know for certain but I'm 99% sure the answer is no. The reason being, I interviewed on Saturday, and they don't even offer a dinner for the people who interview Saturday. Those things are more for you to get to know some students, it seems.
