ok new theory: they noticed that my 21st birthday is on wednesday, so that's when we're all getting accepted.

Hey everybody on the waitlist, just telling you that you got one more seat coming your way!!

I got accepted a few days ago, and after a SUPER TOUGH decision
I have decided to take my talents to... (j/k, b-ball reference)

Anyways, I hope one of you SUPER deserving peeps gets your seat!!

If I get in you will be giving me the BEST birthday present in the world 🙂 and if you're around Tally, I'll buy you a drink.

seeing some movement at other florida schools so hopefully that means movement for us too!!!

hey everyone!

So i got an email back from Dana today after I tried to ask some questions on Friday. I asked stuff like, how many people got off the waitlist, how many are still on, can you tell me if I'm 40-60, etc.

I guess they're keeping things a lot closer to the heart this year, lol cause this is what I got:

If history holds true we anticipate offering 20 or so acceptances before classes begin. Everyone remaining on the Hold List is someone we would be happy to have in our class. I will certainly provide any updated information as soon as I am able!

Which I think pretty much means she can't really tell us anything yet. Guess we gotta wait till next week...

So no luck for anybody i guess? sadness...

on the bright side, happy bday sisterdisco!! hope you're partying hard!!!!

Fantastic birthday. Dana didn't give me a present 🙁 but hey, we still have a few more days. Also heard from the office that we could hear as late as the beginning of classes, not just orientation

I had a dream I got a call from Dana saying I got an acceptance! haha too bad i woke up.

Oh well, off to take the MCAT again today! Wish me luck!

Soooo much good luck! You're going to kick ass!

also, it's possible people didn't correctly tell fsu no, so fsu assumes they're coming for orientation, and then they don't show up--that's what has happened in the past.

keep the positive thought going!! yeah there are stories, i know people that lived in a hotel during orientation because they just got the acceptance

doesn't seem to be the case this year. just got a rejection.

"You were high atop a relatively short hold list. While I cannot provide specific information regarding why you were not accepted, I would be happy to provide feedback on how to strengthen your application for future applications after June 15"

Yeah but by May 15th shouldn't they have told them no? and if they get an acceptance after May 15th don't they have to notify them still by a certain date??

So I don't get how that is possible. Unless its like people got accepted in that post may 15th time period and didn't lose their 1-2 weeks at the other school yet so hadn't told them yet.

Sorry to hear!!!! I hope next year if you reapply you get into your home state schools. it is quite sad to hear you did not interview at Wayne and OU and MSU.

I would talk with people at Wayne for advice too. They all seem super uber friendly at that university and as a Mich resident you should stand a good shot if you have what they are looking for. I got the feeling they wanted people with a high level of commitment to service and volunteerism moreso then research focused people so if you have that, that should help you. But for specific advice I'd call them up as well. Sorry to hear ur misfortune. The bright side though is at least now u have some closure and are not at the crossroads of questioning whether or not it will happen. so you can focus on what you need to do.

Wishing much :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck: your way. 🙂

Yeah, I'll definitely be putting more effort into the Michigan schools now that I'll have to reapply. I really focused on schools that I thought fit me well, but I guess I'll have to be less picky 😛

FSU is a tough one because it is the school in all of Fl. that takes the least percentage of out of staters. Maybe its closest rival in statistics on such is FAU. But that's cuz FAU is such a small school to begin with.

So I mean it was a tough battle to begin with to get in there as an OOS school but perhaps MSU has a similar mission to rural health so that may be a good fit and working with counselors there and Wayne would help. I would apply early and broadly again. Find out where you are weak and improve it if it is something that can be changed. I wish you well.

I guess the positive is that you are not left hanging anymore and know where you stand. So at least you can start planning. imagine if you had to wait another 2 months just to find out the same news to be in a position where you can't plan for future but can't be sure what would happen with waitlists either. Its a lot worse.

...................................................................................................

On that note, I did want to say that I got my official FSU rejection letter today though I knew I was rejected when i didn't get the last interview date. lol. Surprised it took so long esp. after my friend got her pre interview rejection several weeks ago.

Yeah, FSU typically takes 10 OOS kids, but they actually didn't care that I was OOS, or so I was told after my interview.

definitely hitting the ground running on this next set of applications

So wow. that mcat i took was ROUGH ROUGH ROUGH.

the PS section was absolutely terrifying (luckily EVERYONE else thought so, go check out the 5/26 MCAT thread haha). The verbal was easy and the Bio was also really tough.

The unfortunate thing is, the past two times I've taken the MCAT, I've gotten 7s in Physical science, which blows and probably which is why i got one interview last year.

I'm also bummed because I was doing so well on the practice AAMCs, my highest score was a 36 and I was averaging 34s... oh well we'll see, I just hope I raised my PS score enough and leveled off on bio and verbal..

So SisterDisco you got a rejection email today? that's a huge bummer!!! =( But i know with the early application and whatnot you'll definitely get it next year! I'm really surprised, I didn't get an email today... I wonder what that means or whether they just haven't sent mine out and are sending it out tomorrow.

Oh well, I'm just happy I don't have to study or think about the MCAT anymore. I'm off to DC for the week for vacation! =D

haha and naturally my 100th post was about the MCAT, UGH!

I have a theory that they probably kept a handful (read, 1-3 maaaaybe 5) people from the top of the list for whom it would be most practical to drop everything and run if they find out they need someone to come on Monday...someone from Michigan definitely wouldn't fit that...

So hey, if that craziness happens and you get a spot, wonderful! I'm a firm believer in the everything happens for a reason theory, so I'm not bummed. Already started working on a few applications, and I'm at kind of a weird place in my personal life anyway (possibly getting engaged in the next year or two and as much as I love FSU, being across the country from my significant other might not be the most practical thing). Definitely reapplying though, likely early decision.

You coming to DC with anyone? Or coming by yourself? I'm just leaving DC today!!! 🙂 😀

There is at least one other person who interviewed at FSU who I know of that got the rejection. FSU really is a bit strange in their way of sending some of their rejection letters.

Like pre interview you would think everyone who didn't interview would've gotten the rejection at the same time. Well I just got mine the same day as Sisterdoc got hers. On the other hand my friend who didn't interview got hers weeks ago. I guess its the whole being understaffed thing. But still a bit strange. From sisterdisco's message it looks like she was rejected becaused waitlist wasn't really moving any and they are close to starting orientation. So it seems like they'd reject everyone who didn't get in at this point. Doesn't make sense. I wonder if they kept a few on the w/l in the event that there is movement at the last min. due to last min. drops.

haha edited cuz I realized its sisterdisco not sisterdoc. I should really pay attn to the usernames better on here. my bad.

I agree with the theory that they kept a handful but I can say an IS student also got that post interview rejection. But I do think they might have kept a few in that last min. event someone drops at orientation. otherwise it doesn't make sense that few still didn't get the email.

Yeah that's true, but maybe they just didn't send out all the rejections at once kinda like they didn't for the pre-interview rejections..

It'll be interesting if they call me while I'm in DC, lolol I'm driving up to DC from Gainesville with a friend and we're visiting a couple other friends up there.. then we're going to asheville for half the time to go hiking! exciting!

Ooh ashville, NC!!! I went there like 5 or 6 years ago. It was amazing. 🙂 That was when my bro was living in charlotte and we drove out there. Sooooooo pretty. 🙂

Have an amazing time.

I agree with this theory as well. I was officially rejected this past week, but I know of at least one person (this girl I work with) who is still on Hold, and she's one of the few people who's been on Hold longer than me, plus she lives in Tallahassee, so it would make sense that they're keeping her on in case they can/have to pull people off at the last minute. But Dr. Patrick actually called me to notify me of my rejection, and he said that this year was extremely abnormal in that after May 16th (when they normally see like 20-30 seats open up) they only had like 3 seats open up, and then another one after that, so it just sucks for us. It's just an all-around rough time to try to go to med school, I guess. If only we were like 2 years older...

Best of luck with the next application cycle guys. I'm sorry it didn't pan out for you this year.

Two years in a row stuff happened a lot earlier than they expected. I think that they have been going off such a short history (especially with full classes) that they really have no idea about the patterns. Many of these other schools have 20+ years of full class admission data to run off of and I think it is hard to accurately estimate admissions stuff when we've been around for all of 11ish!

By the way, while it sucks to GET the call, I think it speaks volumes as to what a great guy Dr. Patrick is by actually calling up and telling you himself. It is unlikely being dream crusher (even if only for a year) is much fun. He could have just as easily had emails or letters sent out and gone on his merry way.

Dr. Patrick, like many at FSUCOM, is an asset to the school. We have many others here that are as well. Sadly, we are also losing a few of them to other gigs. One took a position as a program director for a residency program, another is leaving due to stuff that isn't very well defined and then a third is leaving because she took a private practice job to have more time with her kids.

As an example, at the end of MS2 there were many people that wanted step 1 review type lectures. The professors all agreed to it and put in a fair amount of time preparing lectures because they wanted to help and not because it was required. Our pathology professors spent an UNGODLY amount of time preparing review lectures where fellow classmates looked up first aid page numbers for everything listed. Before the review sessions, I got here around 6:30 a.m. and one of the professors was up in his office working and then when I left at 9:45 p.m. he was STILL up there working.

We even had a few professors wander around the different LCs the day or two before an exam and ask if we had questions or if they could clarify anything. If you did have a question, they hung around until it was clarified which sometimes involved drawing on the dry erase boards in each LC.

Having participated in more than a few classes throughout my academic career where the professor did not really care, it is one of the things I really appreciate. I don't go to lectures often and I don't really NEED the help very often, but I do think our professors doing little things like that speaks volumes about the school and the people that work here.

Basically, good luck in the next cycle and I hope your experience this year didn't paint the school in a negative light!

Hey guys, just to let you know I got my rejection letter a couple days ago. so that's that! I guess everyone showed up to orientation..

Good luck to us applying again next year!!!!

So, the girl that I know who was on the wait list after me (the one that I mentioned I work with) just told me that she was actually down to the final two people kept on the wait list, just in case a couple people didn't show up for orientation. In the end, she and the other person were both rejected, because (go figure) everyone showed up for orientation. So don't feel bad that you weren't kept on the wait list longer, because it wouldn't have done any good anyway.

As for what MossPoh said, he's exactly right. Dr. Patrick is truly a great man and he helped me through the uncertainty of this process with the utmost grace and empathy. And I, of all people, know full well how awesome FSUCOM is. As an FSU undergrad, I've had my heart set on its med school since 2007 when I decided to pursue medicine. This sentiment has only grown stronger now that I'm friends with no less than forty current students at FSUCOM. It's hard not to feel just a little bit bitter now. I put my heart and soul (and a lot of money) into trying to get into FSU. I was on the wait list for a combined total of a year over the course of two application cycles and in that time, I did literally everything that a Hold applicant can do. My life would have been so easy if I had gotten into FSU too. I wouldn't have to move, I wouldn't have to pay a ton to live in South Florida, I wouldn't have to worry about when I'm going to do my Navy officer's training, I wouldn't have to leave my girlfriend of almost 2 years. That's the doozy there. I wanted it SO BAD. And I've tried so hard not to feel like I deserved it, but I have to admit that at times I felt like they could have just thrown me a frickin bone, especially since there are quite a few jerk-offs I know who got in without breaking a sweat.

But it's water under the bridge now, I guess. I'm going to FIU where I'll get to train at better hospitals anyway.

For the critical analysis essay, do you think we should do a strengths/weaknesses kind of thing? Or would it be wise to just expand on our strengths, uniqueness, etc?

I would talk about your strengths and uniqueness. But it is a chance to tell your story esp. if there is something you need to explain like an illness or coming from a poverty stricken underserved area or abusive home or something.

Its a chance to let them know who you really are beyond why medicine and to let them understand the events and things that have influenced you to bring you to where you are today.

If you have some grades that dipped one semester or something this is also a time when you can explain the circumstances behind that. if there's some event that really influenced you to becoming who you are today you can let them know about that.

But like I said they are trying to gauge what influences brought you up to this point with that essay.

Is everyone doing 500 words for each question?? Or is it ok to write less than that?? I am having a hard time writing abt travelling, so far I have 190 words... Do you all think thats ok??

Firstly, just to let you know..........this is a thread from last cycle and as such those who were posting on here already started at FSU med or were rejected from FSU med. Might get more responses in the 2011-2012 FSU thread.

That being said 500 words is a limit not a requirement. You don't have to write 500 words but don't write more then 500 words either.
