I thought about that too when I sent in my application. I talked to the associate premed adviser at my school, and she said the committee letter is sufficient for HMS. I'm still wondering if they would disregard someone's application as 'incomplete' if they don't have the required recommendations.

you can definitely get an interview without having letters from everyone you've listed on your app as research advisors/mentors/PIs, but at the interview your interviewier may notice and bring up the lack of letters failing to match up with what you've listed.

last year when i was interviewing for HST, i found out from my interviewer panel that they were missing a letter from one of my PIs and the panel wanted to see it. it turned out that my undergrad had just accidentally not attached one of my letters to my committee letter...but imagine if you had to sit there and explain why you didn't ask a certain PI for a letter haha

to be fair, neither of my NP interviewers asked to see the missing letter.

How many research mentors have you had, and of those, how many did you submit letters from?
I have had 3 or four if i count my little two month internship and submitted a letter from only one, the one i spent two years doing research with.

Hi everyone, first post here.
Im very confused about something and I hope you guys can clarify.
I thought HMS was NON rolling? How come people already had interviews?
I feel now like I have made a big mistake not submitting earlier, although I originally thought that it was no big deal since they were non-rolling.
Thanks.

HMS IS non-rolling. Interviews are done throughout the season, but final decisions aren't made until March after all interviews have been completed.

Also, how does it work in terms of acceptance to NP and HST? If one of them accepts you, does the other automatically reject you, or do you receive independent acceptance/rejection each, and if you get accepted to both you have to decide later on?

Additionally, since people already got interviews, do In have a shot to either program? I'm 3.85GPA, 35Q, submitted a review article to a medical journal (not yet accepted though) and a 3 research assistant positions as an undergrad.

I think you are able to hold on to both acceptances as they are both completely separate committees. For interviews at least, both of them contact you individually and it is possible to get an invite from one and not from the other.

just got the interview invite!! submitted 9/21, complete email 10/8. interview dates in November right before Thanksgiving. good luck everyone!

congrats tonic!!

i was complete 10/15, with no word yet. looks like I won't be getting an interview =(

I'm sorry, but this confuses me. He just got an interview today, and was complete a week before you. Shouldn't you not be worried yet ?

Order doesn't matter, bro. It's not over till it's over.

Oh yeah I know, I just though it odd, that (s)he would conclude that their application was skipped over, when people that submitted earlier were just now getting an interview.

I can understand the opposite, where someone says "Oh you submitted 2 weeks later than me, got an interview and I still haven't, then they may not be will to extend me an invite", but the logic the poster used confused me a bit is all.

Hi everyone,

I'm still waiting on being complete from Harvard. It would be such a blessing to be accepted! Anyway, does Harvard send the nice glossy booklets to everyone? LOL or is that a good sign that they want me!? I know it sounds ridiculous but I'm curious.

Thanks!

hmm i have been complete since early august probably...
i wish they were more open about the whole process. i want to know whats up

I'm pretty sure everyone gets the glossy booklets.

I think you just check a box on the "secondary" and they'll send you one. As Cole said, you are not special. =P

🙁 i didnt get it!!! but already interviewed so thats ok 🙂

Nice. I'd be more than willing to trade the shiny booklet for an interview.

Talk about weird. I submitted by secondary over 2 months ago and am still not complete. I emailed them and they said that they have all my materials and once they are "processed" I will be complete. Anyone else wait this long to be complete??

Maybe they are going on the speed of your screen name. It didnt take that long for me but i think once you are processed, a decision will be made faster

I received the "marked as complete" e-mail this morning. Here's hoping! 🙂

Wow finally got my complete email today. I didn't know the admissions committee was this slow.

I'm pretty sure everyone gets the glossy booklets.

I interviewed here about a month ago and I still don't know what this glossy booklet is that people talk about =P I don't think I ever got it!

You will get another booklet in your folder on interview day that (I think) they only give out to interviewees though =)

Good luck guys!! =) Harvard is amazing.

I submitted July 29th.Contacted them twice. Still not complete. I'm not sure if I care anymore...but it'd be nice if they gave my a refund or something if they don't "complete" me by the deadline....

yay! harvard interview

submitted 10/10
complete 10/26
interview 11/4

this is interview #10... praise God! 🙂

good luck everyone...we're gonna be doctors!

Don't know if this has already been covered, but for those of you who have already interviewed, any advice you can give us?
I have my NP interview next week, and I'm kinda intimidated.

Complete email today. Weird since it was taking so long for everyone else but I only submitted like 2 weeks ago. Needless to say, I'm not going to complain! now, here's hoping something good comes from being comlete. :luck:

Hi,

It would be great if anyone on here familiar with the Harvard-MIT HST MD and MD-PhD programs could sound off....

I'm a little confused about HST in relation to the "Harvard MD-PhD Program". Let's say I'm already in a PhD program at MIT, in Electrical Engineering for example. I apply to Harvard and select "HST" and "MD-PHD" on the application.

I received two emails recently, from the HST MD admissions committee inviting me for an interview in January, and from the Harvard MD-PhD admissions committee saying they weren't inviting me for an interview.

If I am admitted to the HST MD program, how does that work out? Do I have to pay tuition to MIT and HMS? Can I be "in an MD-PhD program" at MIT via HST? Does being a PhD student at MIT and an HST MD student mean I am technically an MD-PhD student meaning I only pay tuition to MIT (via my graduate fellowship)?

Thanks for any/all responses/advice.

Hey Ironman,

So you actually are performing research at MIT at the moment? This is difficult for me to answer since I am not in your position, BUT if I were I would (upon acceptance into the HST program) halt my current research path (electrical engineering for example) and allow the seemingly limitless opportunities that are available through HST to open up to me. How far along are you in your PhD studies, and is it in a medically-relevant field?

Also, juggling a current PhD @ MIT with the HST curriculum seems like a pretty daunting task - if you are even allowed to do so. Although the HST allows you to pursue an advanced degree at MIT or Harvard, I do not believe it is during the first two years of study when you are taking this crazy curriculum. (Have you seen it?! It's awesome!)

Nobody would know better than the institutions themselves so I urge you to ask the appropriate parties at both MIT and Harvard... but a word of caution - they are only admitting 30 students this year. The fact that you have an interview is already a substantial achievement, but you definitely want to appear 100% committed to this program and (although I may be wrong) it seems as though you wish to hold on to your current path of study.

I hope this helped a little - and congrats on making it this far!

Does anyone on here actually go to harvard? Would be nice to hear some student perspectives.
Good question! You can check out this blog written by a first-year HMS student right now at elusions.wordpress.com. He writes a lot about his own experiences there and what it's been like at HMS. Here's a specific link to a post he wrote about interviewing: http://elusions.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/med-school-interview/

I'm sure if any of you have questions about HMS or the med school process in general, you can contact him. He'll be happy to talk and maybe post more in response to your questions.

NP interview invite this morning! I'm thrilled!! 🙂

Sent the "app processed" e-mail a week ago; 34O, cGPA: 3.67, sGPA: 3.65

I'll be interviewing at the good ol' Longwood campus on November 30th! 😀

app complete email middle of october. silent rejection?

I hope not...I was complete on 8/10 haha so if you are in trouble, I'm not sure what I'm in. You should be totally fine, though, for real. Hasn't even been a month for you. Remember, interviews go through February. Good luck!

Hi! I'm a first year HST student. I just scrolled through this last page of posts and can offer a few answers

- applying HST and NP at the same time: yes, many people do this. The committees are separate. You can be accepted to one, both, or none. Applying to one does not hurt your chances with the other.
N.B.:If you do apply to HST, my feeling is that you should have solid reasons. Otherwise, it's wasted effort, which if fine if you have that time, but the programs are different enough that the faculty are serious about finding a good fit. (But don't confuse 'solid reasons' with 'good stats'. Be confident! It's really easy at this point in the process to underestimate yourself. If you like the looks of HST, apply!)

- Yes, two rounds of inteview invites have gone out. But there are plenty more to come.

- Regarding the question of how NP, HST, and the MD/PhD programs differ: NP and HST are separate tracks to the MD. You can only be in one of these two. In addition, you can also be in the MD/PhD program, which simply means you will take time off to get a PhD. You can apply to all three. You can get accepted to both MD programs. You can't be accepted to the MD/PhD program unless you are accepted to at least one MD program.

- When you apply to both HST and the MD/PhD, you are applying for MD/PhD with funding from the NIH (the MSTP). If you don't get into the MSTP but do get into HST, then you can still affiliate with the MD/PhD and pursue the double degree, but funding/stipend is not guaranteed.

PM me with questions. I might have sounded curt here but only because I'm rushing off to a meeting!

Thanks for taking the time to stop by z31! Comforting to hear that only two rounds of interview invites have gone out.

On a side note - anyone accidentally found themselves saying "intervites" to people in real life? I think it's a nice combination of "interview" and "invite".

That sounds kind of complicated, but not unheard of. You're at MIT right? Why don't you stop by the MD/PhD office and the HST office? They're both in the Tosteson Medical Education Center on the Longwood campus. PM me if you need more detailed directions.

No problem 🙂

But I should clarify actually -- I meant only two rounds of HST interview invites have gone out. I'm not sure about NP - they've been interviewing for longer.

New Pathway Interview Invite this morning!

Submitted: 10/18
Complete Email:11/5
Interview Invite:11/17

They are still giving out interview slots for the first and second week of December, so there is still some time to get the NP invite! Hope this helps!

Good luck everyone!

I have like the exact same stuff. Submitted 10/21, complete email the 5th as well, maybe that means I'll get some love tomorrow? :xf:

I could really go for some good news right about now...

Does anyone who has interviewed know what type of questions the interviewers ask for NP?

It is the same stuff as every other interview you've ever been on...why do you want to become a physician, why Harvard, etc. No worries, my friend, you'll be golden if you can answer those. For myself, I probably felt the same as you when I interviewed in September. I expected (since its HAAAARVARD) that the interviews would be very tense and that the students/faculty would be a little on the snooty side. Why I applied with those misconceptions, I do not know. But, I am so glad I did. My interview day was totally unexpected. People were super nice, down-to-earth, approachable and not in the least bit pretentious. My faculty interviewer was a super nice old man...neonatologist at Beth Israel. We had a good chat and he reminded me of my grandpa. It wasn't until afterward that I was told that he was some really famous doctor and the NICU at Beth Israel was named after him (this is what I'm told). People were awesome...so just be yourself, strive to have a good, intelligent conversation and have fun. 🙂 Hope that helped a little...

Thanks! Thats much appreciated. I only applied to three schools and HMS is first of the trio of interviews thus nervousness has described my emotions as the date is fast approaching. Good Luck to you!
