Hi everyone, I haven't been following this thread because I didn't think I would get an interview, but somehow I did today!

I'm definitely excited to interview here, and just had some questions.

- If I go here, I will be living with my boyfriend. Does that mean the dorms are not an option for me? What's the deal with the new dorms?

- Is the current M1 class the first one for the 1.5 year pre-clinical curriculum?

- I have been to NY a few times but never lived there. How is the neighborhood in the NYU med school area? Safe?

Congrats on the interview! I'm in the same process as you so I won't pretend to know any riveting secrets, but hopefully I can give some input.

- They have on-campus housing for couples, but it's for married couples or those in a legal union. The new dorms were converted from old NYU undergrad dorms into medical student housing, and they're pretty nice and decently priced for NYC real estate (I think 750-850/month?).

- I believe so. We heard mostly from M1 students on the interview day, but I think the M2s are still on the traditional 2-year curriculum.

- It's okay. If you go further west (towards 2nd and 3rd avenue), the area gets a little nicer. It's no upper east side, but it wasn't bad. Walking around at night was fine; I was cautious but not overly concerned.

Does anyone have a link to some concrete information on the new 18 month curriculum? It sounds fantastic, but even their SOM curriculum website still outlines the old curriculum and I can't seem to find any detailed info on the new one.

Thank you so much for the info! It sounds like you already had your interview, did you love it?

I heard on another forum that NYU "requires" students to live in their dorm the first year. That can't be right can it? If I can't live there with my boyfriend without being married, we'd have to find housing elsewhere. I've heard that is a nightmare in NY, hope there's some housing around there.

Haha I'm getting too ahead of myself. Just excited for my interview now!

Not a problem. I liked the school; the idea of jumping into a completely new curriculum is a little daunting, but they seem to know what they're doing. PM me if you want to go into specifics! You are certainly not "required" to live on campus; most of the students did because it was cheap* and close to the school. However, they mentioned several students who lived off campus, especially those with significant others and/or families.

what is the email address you sent to for an "in-the-area" email?

I was wondering if there is any reason to go to NYU over a good in-state tuition school. Do they give any scholarship money or just loans?

Thoughts?

so I just submitted my secondary today.. you guys think its too late?

Does anyone know to what email address I should send my "in-the-area" email?

I feel lucky to have received an interview, but unfortunately I'm thinking very hard about declining it. Basically, it just doesn't make much financial sense for me to live in NY in the years I will be accumulating debt (dorms will not be an option, have pet), and therefore also a waste of money for me to fly all the way out there if I won't be able to go realistically.

So, this all depends on a few things, so my questions are:

- Is NYU one of the schools where a lot of people are interviewed and a lower % is accepted post-interview? I think I saw that they interview close to 1000 people.

- If accepted, does NYU offer a lot of scholarships? Is it realistically to depend on one?

Since I think both these answers will not be in my favor, I really don't want to spend the money on the trip although the school is AWESOME and I would love to spend some time at Bellevue later in my career. Just because of money, I can't see myself living somewhere with such a high cost of living when I'll get an equally good education elsewhere.

Thanks guys!

When I interviewed on Thursday, my interviewer said that they interview 900-1000 people and offer approximately 500 acceptances. That sounded high to me but that's what he said....

As to cost, I don't know much about scholarships, but again, both my interviewer and the med students I talked to said that cost was the biggest downside of NYU. They do have subsidized dorms that are reasonable, but if you can't live in them, NYC, especially Manhattan, is really really super expensive.

Hope that's a little helpful....

Hey guys, interviewed here on Friday. It was really fun, and everyone at the med school was soooo nice!! This was the most relaxed interview I have ever had . . it was great. All the interviewees were super nice also! Good luck to everyone!

Those numbers sound about right. I think it is more like 950 and 450.

That's fairly typical. For the most part schools outside the top 20 have acceptance rates (including the waitlist) at around 50%. In NYC AECOM is a noticeable exception where the acceptance rate is less than 40%.

Yea, but the cost of NYU is definitely worth it. And it's less expensive than it could be (see the Philly schools for example).

See that's why I don't understand why it's worth it because

1. a lot of really good schools are in areas with MUCH lower costs of attendance
2. Bellevue is great but will you really benefit that much from it the first two years? Isn't it equally great if you can go back there for a rotation or something later in your career?
3. Every dollar you spend during school, you're spending like 10 more cents in interest, so isn't saving money during this period especially important?

My application was complete August 26th but I have not heard anything from NYU... should I call/ email them to ask for the status of my application?
thanks!!

I'm in the same boat as you; seeing when others were complete (and subsequently invited) makes me think we haven't been reviewed yet. My status page still says "under review."

Does anyone know about what the per month rent is for living in Greenberg Hall?

They say that, but when I called to schedule they only offered me a choice between three dates Tues-Thurs.

I withdrew my application from NYU (or rather, they withdrew it for me before I could call to turn down the interview...I was waffling and apparently took too long to get back to them 😛 ). I hope that helps one of ya'll!

Got an invite this morning! Soo excited!! Dates available were Nov 29 through Dec 10 but Nov 29 was filled up by the time I called

I recently interviewed here and found the interview to be extremely conversational and relaxed. To be honest, the interviewer did most of the talking, focusing on "how great NYU is, the research, etc".

I left with the impression that the interview is just to see how "real" you are. The NYU students are great and I was quiet impressed by the amount of money the school makes available for student activities. Bellevue is beautiful, but the school facilities themselves are a little dated. Research was emphasized big time (Honors Programs, etc).

Good luck to those applying!

my status changed to Interview Completed- Final Decision Pending. Any one else have this ?

Yea. I think it changed to this the day after my interview. I think that's the default status. Does anyone who interviewed not have this?

Mine used to say that but now only says "Final Decision Pending"

sent an in-the-area email, and didn't even receive an acknowledgment saying they got it..u guys think I should call and be sure they got it/added it to my file?

When I sent in my in the area they didn't respond either...but they sent an interview invite about a week and a half later. As long as you aren't in the area this weekend I would wait a bit before pestering them too much.

does anyone know if nyu prefers students that come from in-state? ...

has nyu sent out any rejections?

it seems like there have been a lot of people with II, but not any one has been rejected.

my status has been "application complete-under review" for over a month now. so its beginning to make me think that they are just waiting to break the news....

Is it too late to send NYU and the other New York schools an in the area email if I will be interviewing at Mount Sinai on Friday, Nov. 12th? I sent my secondaries for the NYC schools in mid to late July so its already been a while.

And also, is there like a standard format for in the area emails. Do I just say I will be in the area? Do I have to say what school I am interviewing at, etc? How long I will be there for? Kinda confused on this. Thanks!

I was complete-under review on August 2nd and didn't get my II until October 25th...it just takes a while

Has anyone who was complete in early October receive an interview invite? I was complete at the very beginning of October and am eagerly waiting for one. I'm a bit nervous w/this school because NYU finishes interviewing end of Jan. 🙁

ive been complete since 8/12 haven't heard anything

Interview invite today, complete 9/15

32S, 3.88

Good luck everyone!

premed 0205: I wouldn't worry yet, as I was complete almost a month before you. I don't know if NYU goes in chronological order of completions, but they are only at the beginning of December for interview dates.

Hi Obliquity,

Congrats on the invite! Thanks for keeping the rest of the hopefuls updated! 🙂

Did you guys ever receive a complete e-mail? My status says "Application in Process- You should hear from our office within 4-6 weeks." but I never got an e-mail and sent in the secondary in mid-late August. It has also been well over 4-6 weeks since that status was posted.
