If anyone needed proof that the admissions process was completely unfair and an example of reverse discrimination, then he need only look at your profile. Congratulations on your latest acceptance and I hope you get into all of the 16 schools that invited you for an interview.

This is completely inappropriate and offensive.

With that said, congrats, dancerdoc!!! 🙂 Good to know that more acceptances are coming out.

agreed that this is inappropriate (and unnecessarily sarcastic) but more importantly, i was really just trying to be helpful....trying to let people know that more acceptances might be going out soon. isn't that what these forums are for? definitely didn't mean to offend anyone.

I guess yth654 is the Ricky Gervais of SDN

I didn't know this forum also served as a place for Klan meet ups!

And on another note, I wish people would stop saying reverse discrimination. Do you not realize that there's no inherent directionality in the word discrimination?

Well usually discrimination is by the majority to the minority. So the reverse would be to the majority I guess? But I didn't realize other "people" were using this term?

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/discrimination No direction! 🙂 You could be the one half plant/half man person on the planet and discriminate against regular humans because they can't feed on sunlight and that means they suck.

And other people on this forum probably don't use the term, but I lived in the south for a decade. I've heard it numerous times.

Wow! The office is active. People should be hearing soon.

Accepted by email this morning! 🙂

I already asked this but we never got an answer and it'll help decide the urgency of an update letter... does anybody know if NYU is only waitlist/accept post-interview or do they send out rejections as well?

A friend got rejected post-interview last year. In general I think schools tend to not reject a lot post interview and most rejectees don't post about it on sdn.

Does anyone know what a typical day at NYU is like? i.e. x hours of lecture, etc.

Does anyone know what a typical day at NYU is like? i.e. x hours of lecture, etc.

I communicated with a current student with regard to this question after I got my letter. Here are the relevant parts of her emails:

" [. . .] we typically have 1.5 hours of small group discussions 2-3 times per week. In a typical week we may have two hours in class in the morning and then have a short PBL session after lunch. These are led by faculty members and are great ways to ask questions about material covered in our lectures and to learn how clinicians solve medical problems. Unfortunately I don't think there's a link to the daily class schedule that is not password-protected. We have about 20 hours of class per week and the few days leading up to an exam we usually have free to study. This class schedule is probably the thing I like most about NYU, because it leaves students with a lot of flexibility to spend time pursuing their other interests or learning in the way that best suits them."

"Here's an example (probably pretty representative) of my class schedule. [This student is a second year, though... Since the first years this year are the first to have the new curriculum, this might be a little different than what we would have..]

Monday: 9 AM - 11 AM lectures, 11-12:30 lunch, 12:30 - 2:00 small group conference, 2 - 4 Bedside Diagnosis (in the hospital with a resident)
Tuesday: 9 AM - 11 AM lectures, 11-12:30 lunch, 12:30 - 2:00 conference
Wednesday: 9 AM - 11 AM lectures, 11-2:30 lunch, 12:30-1:30 lecture
Thursday: 9 AM - 11 AM lectures, 11-12:30 lunch, 12:30 - 2:00 conference
Friday: 9 AM -10:30 AM conference, 10:30 AM - noon conference

Our classes typically start at some time between 9 AM and 10 AM depending on the unit.

We only take one class at a time (with other units for bedside diagnosis scattered in) so at the end of each unit we have one exam that covers everything. Typically this means that we have an exam every 2-4 weeks and when we finish an exam we are really done with that material.

During anatomy, I believe that the 20-hour week still applies, but more time is spent doing dissection and less time is spent in lectures (just 1 or 2 hours per day).

[. . .] In the small group sessions we often go over one case example and then talk about relevant material that was covered in lecture. There is no "new" material that is covered in small group that we are responsible for-our exams are only on material covered in the lecture.

There is no internal ranking system during the preclinical period. They report the top 20 individuals in each unit which is used for AOA later on (although clinical grades count for almost all of the AOA ranking). Other than these individuals there is no ranking for students. I know that I applied for a summer fellowship that asked the dean's office to rank whether I was in the top 1/4, middle 1/2, or bottom 1/4 and the dean's office actually wouldn't answer that question. This actually surprised me...I had assumed that they really did rank people without telling us, but I guess they don't. [Pseudo ranking!]"

Thanks Neuro, that was very helpful. does anyone know if they have friday exams?

Did anyone else receive acceptances over the last two days? It seemed pretty quiet with two people reporting acceptances. Hoping there is another wave of acceptances early next week ...

what kind of consulting do you do for MGMT?

Kind of a quiet thread for some decisions to (potentially) be released sometime soon. Anyone know if NYU will do things differently this year or February 1 is still looking like a glamorous day for some?

Anyway, just excited...but not too much...don't want to get my hopes up .

i'm hoping that february 1 is the day where they'll release a bunch of acceptances...i'm getting tired of waiting, i interviewed back in november.

I just browsed last year's thread a little bit. It doesn't look like there will be a storm... they didn't hand out too many acceptances on Feb 1 last year. :xf:

and the year before... nothing on feb 1.
here's the lull. only time will tell if a storm is to follow.

nothing??
the wait is driving me nuts.....

And the worst part is, considering only a few acceptances (if any) are given out in today, we'll have to wait til March 1st, which is 3 MONTHS since my interview (and that long for many others, I'm sure)!

NYU is one of my top two choices (out of where I've interviewed)... :xf:

Good luck to everyone! :luck:

Just out of curiosity what is your number 1? GW?

Einstein. NYU is the only school I would consider attending over Einstein - NYU is my #1, Einstein my #1b (except Columbia or Sinai, neither of which seems promising at this stage). I'm going to look hard at GW and NYMC if accepted, but Einstein and NYU are my frontrunners.

still hoping for an interview here 🙁 sent an update letter but alas, nothing....hope is dwindlinggg...🙁

What do you like about Einstein over NYU?

I am pretty sure not only are interview invites over with, but interviews.

So.. no news yet today. If it is anything like last year, after today we can all hope for waitlist spots March 1st, correct? That will make my time spent waiting on NYU 3.5 months- I feel your pain guys.

That's likely to be incorrect, actually. NYU has sent acceptances (along with waitlists) on March 1st the past two years. Yes, a majority of the decisions released 3/1 are WLs, but read past years' threads to see good news will still come to some on 3/1.

NeuroE: NYU seems like a slightly better school, but Einstein seemed to have a warmth to me that NYU lacked...

I'm going to agree with both of these statements. If I got into NYU :xf: I'd be deciding between there and Einstein. I do think NYU has the prestige factor but I did not get a good feeling interview day or from friends who have gone. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly at Albert Einstein and seemed so happy!

Also I'm still considering Downstate. Anyone want to comment on thoughts between AE/NYU/Downstate?? Thanks!

I don't think comparing the schools by your perception on people's friendliness on the interview day is too accurate. Neither schools directly exposes you to many students or faculty throughout the day that are not involved in either your tour or presentation. I had a great feeling about the people at NYU at the end of my interview day, and I realize this is mainly because I got on well with my interviewer and tour guide. But these are not likely the people I will be dealing with as a student.

At the end of the day, NYU has a better reputation, match list, curriculum, location, hospital, and facilities. They also seem fairly flexible in dealing with the student's requests, at least, from the small and likely completely biased view I got. However, you may get a bigger apartment in the Bronx than Manhattan, and spend less money overall. But this is less important to me personally.

i think i checked my status page 20+ times today....all for naught!!

Yeah, me too. One perk of AECOM would be not waiting 1/3 of a year after interviewing to find out if you are accepted or not. 🙂

I actually thought all the students I saw at Einstein looked run-down and unenthusiastic. People at NYU were practically bouncing off the walls. I got a much, MUCH friendlier vibe from NYU, and left Einstein early because I lost interest before the tour was over.

I felt the same, maybe they picked up on that and that's why we were rejected? 🙂

Hopefully I'll have as much luck with NYU as you did!
