I rushed to the mailbox today not expecting a letter just yet, but it was there and I'm now in the AWPA pool, one step closer! Now it's time to wait longer... Anyone else receive good news today?

I really feel the curriculum fits me and hope to get in this August!

Congrats! I also got my AWPA letter today. It's the first I've heard back from any schools so let's hope this trend keeps up!

Thanks and congrats to you also! I haven't received much love from anyone else either, not even an interview, so don't feel bad.

:luck: to you!

Just a caveat, April 1 we can inquire about our place on the AWPA list.

Top 1/4!!!! April Fools 😀

That would be very cruel, haha!

turkaglew, are you a Hedo Turkoglu fan? Just wondering because I'm a huge Orlando Magic fan and have wondered since I saw your handle.

Any advice for Interview Day? I'll be interviewing this Tuesday, I'm quite excited!

Has anyone decided on another school/withdrawn from here recently?

I interviewed on 1/24. Any ideas on when I might hear back? Thanks

So if they are meeting today, does anyone know when the next batch of acceptances should be headed out?

Not sure if there was an earlier meeting, but when I interviewed last week they told me they were meeting 3/22 and would send out the last batch the next week.

Yeah I think they're meeting today...expect a letter in the mail on Thursday/Friday depending on where you live.

Awesome, thanks! I can't wait to hear back; I have high hopes. I really liked SIU and I think they're my #1.

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know what the advantages are of staying and practicing in Southern/Central Illinois.....?

I would say, if you're from Central/Southern Illinois and you have family and friends in that location and you're happy living in the area then you may want to settle down there.

This is a truly unimpressive school. SIU acceptance scores are abysmal. No wonder medical outcomes in the US are plummetting, the quality of students accepted are abysmal. I know a pot smoking girl with a 28 MCAT accepted here. Enough said!! Fill those white female quotas with pot smokers 3.0 GPA MCAT 28 pot smokers!!

Don't listen to ^, obvious troll. SIU is a great school.

someone's mad they didn't get accepted...

Typical quote based system response. 100 million in tax payer funding and what research have they produced? The truth is nothing! They dont teach students, they dont produce research, the MCAT and GPAs are abysmal, and a couple of elitist who get in on the quota system call people who tell the truth names. That is America. SIU gets 100 millions of dollars to hire Chinese PhD students that produce no research and their mandate to train students they donnt even do. Lets face it SIU scores are in the basement, and they dont deserve the tax payer funding unless they are going to train students period!! ANd Illinois taxpayers are going to have a voice!

The only naming calling little troll on this board is Iroqoius Red. This is America people are entitled to their opinion. Your name calling shows that your are mature enough to take the critisim required to be a doctor! It wasnt even directed at you.. it was directed at an underperforming Illinois state institution that gets 100 of millions of dollars and pays Chinese foreign nationals to do research that have zero success. Those are facts and the administrators of SIU should be held accountable!!

out of sheer curiosity....
Do the SIU interviewers call up your references and ask about you?

SIU is one of the few schools in the nation that actually caters to the local population, rather than just espousing the practice on paper. When you're a medical school that is attempting, as best it can, to provide a rural area with a source of physicians you have to be prepared to accept students that don't have pristine stats. If SIU started accepting students from across the country in order to beef up the stats, it would have a significant draining effect on the supply of physicians to central/southern Illinois.

Personally, I tremendously enjoyed my interview at SIU, and still think the education I would receive there would be much better than what I would receive at UIC. That being said, I'm not considering following through on my acceptance, not because I think SIU is lacking in any way, but because I've come to recognize that I don't want to spend the rest of my life in SoIll. And, honestly, if I did go to SIU I would feel horrible knowing that I am taking the spot of another student that would be willing to stay in the area and practice. SIU is not trying to be Harvard, it's trying to be something more medical schools should be: a source of medical knowledge and education for its surrounding population.

From your posts I get the impression you care a lot about the school. Perhaps you should consider working there someday and trying your hand at turning the ship toward the direction you see fit.

Thank you cetac for that well composed and articulate statement. Do most SIU graduates stay in SoIll? There is no real obligation to "serve rural Illinois". Residency placements appear to be mostly all over the state and into contiguous regions. I assume most people who choose to matriculate to SIU have an idea that they want to practice somewhere in the Midwest.

Well in an effort to get the best residency training possible, it's sometimes necessary to train at a bigger academic center in a larger city. However, that does not mean that graduates will not return to the area to practice.

Well, being from central Illinois, I wouldn't mind practicing here. I know a few physicians who studied at SIU and they are doing well. One is a neurosurgeon and the other is a general surgeon.

Yep, I don't really want to live in a LARGE city, especially with the saturation of all types of professionals. It's possible to make much more money and have a lower cost of living in a small to mid-sized city. Plus, it's easy to travel to either St. Louis or Chicago on the weekends.

Err...but don't let me sway anyone...:meanie: ehh...I probably won't get in unless someone else withdraws! 😱

No, there's no obligation. It's somewhat more like what is expected of an MD/PhD student. Sure, you don't have to do research once you graduate, but you probably should. Of course, some people will leave the area no matter what, but the impression I got from SIU during my interview was that their mission is to provide central/southern Illinois with physicians, which is particularly difficult considering certain counties in southern Illinois have the some of the highest malpractice costs in the nation.

There certainly is a wide variety of residency placements at locations all over the U.S., and I'm not sure whether those individuals come back or not. I'd like to think they do. Or... I'd like to hope they do.

Good points. I've lived in Chicago for 5 years and costs of living are ridiculous and unsustainable for a student and part-time government employee. The census has shown that Chicago's population has decreased by 7%, or more than 200,000, in the past 10 years. People are moving to the suburbs, or downstate, or even out of state. I don't necessarily want to work and live in southern Illinois, but there are plenty of nice places in Illinois with lots to offer.

You're right on. Hopefully something can be done about the cost of medical malpractice in Illinois. Does anyone if there is anything about malpractice suit caps in the new healthcare bill? Or anything that would alleviate the burden on physicians?

There are grants provided for by the bill that allow states to develop pilot programs to alleviate malpractice costs.

not sure if "most" do, but a significant number choose to.

Please do pass on that acceptance, I am one of those still sitting on the AWPA list and I would love to go to med school. 😀

But no pressure, ya know

If you don't mind sharing, when was your interview and when did the letter arrive? I'm still waiting to hear. Interviewed on 1/24.

I interviewed back in either September or October. I had the letter in my mailbox probably a little less month after the interview. But I think it all depends on when the next committee meeting is compared to your interview date. I believe it says on their website that you should expect hear back from them within four weeks. If you havnt herd since 1/24 it may not hurt to give Evan (I think that was his name) a call to check. It would be awful if the postal service lost the letter.

I interviewed on 1/18, they met on 2/8 and I received a letter with AWPA status on 2/10. I would definitely think you should have heard back by now unless you fell into the next meeting in March for some odd reason. Definitely give Evan a call to see if a letter was sent.

K, thanks guys, I'm going to get on it today. I sent an e-mail to admissions and when I get back home from spring break I'll check my mail. If there's nothing there I'll call tomorrow.

1/24 fell on March I believe (I have a friend that interviewed that week) but let me know what EW says if you talk to him.

EW just e-mailed me back. I was placed on the AWPA list last week. The letter is on its way. So, now I wait until the end of March for the next batch. Anything I can do to improve the outcome from here on? Everyone is placed on the AWPA (or alternate or reject) until the next batch, correct?

Congrats! About improving your chances...the AWPA rank is set. You can't do anything else at this point to change it. I've asked. 🙄

Well, I guess I can just sit and wait. Isn't that what most of the application season is about? I've already seen this on the thread, but after what date can we inquire about our rank on the list? Does anyone have an idea of how many are on the AWPA? Are there still some from the first and second batches who haven't made it off?

They don't release some of the numbers you are asking about. I've tried to get them. I can say that there are still people on the AWPA list that were there since the first batch. BUT that doesn't affect your spot on the list. If they rated you 37 you are higher than all the 36's whether placed on there in October or February.

How much does tuition/living expenses factor into your decision-making?
For example:
SIU estimated budget for year 1 - $50,000
Private school est. budget year 1 - $70,000

Anyone know if there is a facebook group or forum for accepted class of 2015 students for SIU yet? It may be a bit early for this but I haven't been able to find anything.
