SIU just about gave me a heart attack! They just called me and started out by saying, "We have an opening,"....me getting really excited....then continuing with, "for calling to find out what your place is on the AWPA list. Are you free tomorrow morning?" Jeez I was all excited and thinking I was being accepted in between batches! Just my luck!

^ Same thing happened to me. Twice. Oh well, tomorrow morning should be just delightful. I'm calling about the list and then getting a pap smear.

I couldn't reserve a time to call for tomorrow or wednesday bc I work in the ER the next two days and I never know when I'll get a break. Grrr....the anticipation is dreadful!!!!!!!!!

dang med school admissions running ahead of schedule? I'm shocked and impressed👍

So how longs it take from when someone withdraws to when the offer the next acceptance? Is it the same day?

I also received my acceptance letter and e-mail Friday (Interviewed March 10).

Any suggestions for living around Carbondale?

They just sent the class a survey about housing that they'll send out to the incoming class (probably in the coming weeks?). There's tons of housing down here since it's a college town. One bedrooms fill up the fastest but otherwise there's not a huge rush to sign a lease now.
The most popular places are:
Aspen Court
The Pointe
Wedgewood Hills
Metropolitan (mixed reviews here)
St Germaine (mixed reviews as well)
G&R isn't one of the more popular leasing companies but it's still a good one and it's right next to The Pointe

I was told I was in the top 1/4 of the list. Dr. Constance made it sound like it's just inevitable, but I still won't feel that great until I get that email in my possession though :xf:

2nd quarter. 👎 Dr. Constance used the phrases "hard to say" and "cautiously optimistic" and that IF I hear anything it'll be after May. So basically, I'm f****d.

It's funny because I was so sure I'd get in this year. I didn't even apply to any other low tier out of state schools because I was sure, if anything, I'd get into Southern. Although, life changes and I'm feeling that it wouldn't have been the best place for me anyway. It's either UIC (OMG PLEASE) or Loyola MAMS in the fall. Good luck to everyone else.

(I'd put them in my second quarter of Attend When Place Available list, too. :meanie:)

Top quarter! He said I will get an acceptance, its just a matter of time. BUT I won't celebrate until I get an official acceptance!!!!

Firstly, I've been lurking here, and I have to say to you, startswithb: be my friend. Please, pretty please? Seriously, your ability to maintain a sense of humor during this process is awesome.

Secondly, I wouldn't be too upset about this whole process if I felt like expectations had been managed. When I interviewed, the takeaway wrt the AWPA letters was that if you receive one, you are *very* likely to be admitted, as if it were a foregone conclusion. (I think the exact words were "almost everyone on the AWPA list eventually gets off of it," but maybe I am hallucinating at this point. Highly possible.) Apparently, this is not the case. I only started to get worried when I ran across this thread and saw the warning from last year's applicants.

The process makes sense to me, but the way that it was sold was misleading at best and dishonest at worst. Fingers crossed (until I must uncross them to tighten the rope around my neck). 😉

Dr. Constance is in right now if anyone has the free time and wants to call.

I'm also in the second quartile, but he said it's a place that "historically they reach every year." So second quartile is evidently not necessarily always a death sentence.

Haha! I will definitely be your friend! That made me feel better. 🙂

From reading last year's thread I knew they stopped accepting somewhere in the second quarter, so I was dreading to hear that I was, in fact, in the limbo quarter. I tried to ask him if I was at the top or bottom of the quarter but he wouldn't tell me. However, unlike the poster above, he definitely was not encouraging. I can easily take away that I am probably toward the bottom.

My self-doubt right now is palpable.

Hey guys, I'm also AWPA, and dying to find out. I'm at work so I can't call Dr. Constance. It's weird that EW left in the middle of the admissions cycle, wonder what happened. Do you think we'll get a reply from e-mailing the admissions office or Dr. Constance? If so, what's his e-mail? They are probably getting bombarded right now. I'm confident most of us on here will get in. I just hope I can get in early to make things easier. The language in the AWPA letter was definitely encouraging, "historically most applicants on the AWPA list get accepted" to paraphrase.

This isn't the middle of a cycle, it is before the beginning of the next.

Nothing dramatic happened with EW.

Well it's none of my business. I never got the chance to meet EW. I was supposed to interview with him but he was out with sick kids. The next cycle begins in June though, correct? It's not exactly the middle, it's more near the end, and it's definitely before the beginning of the next. I scheduled a time to call Dr. Constance. Hoping for the best. If I have a good position and the outlook is positive then I'd like to visit Carbondale. I know someone who is in his first year there. :xf:

Does everyone in the top quarter usually get an acceptance?

I just didnt want any rumors going around, haha. We miss him already. I really liked that guy. I wonder if he is still prowling around on the boards.

I think they want time to train a new director before it gets started. Also it is pretty much the end because once the list is generated, it is generated. No more interviews, meetings, or anything like that. Cdale will start taking over all mailings to you in a couple weeks. As RED said, we are working on the housing survey for you already. I'll find out about a facebook group in a few mins for you.

The group was just set up, you will get an email invitation to join it within the next week or two.

If you have questions now about Carbondale, PM me and I can probably help you out.

When is it appropriate to call and ask what I could have improved on in my application? And who exactly should I call?

I called Dr. Constance to find out my place on the list already and I hope I don't have to call him again. lol I will feel like a bother.

When I called I was prepared to ask these questions if I was not in a favorable spot on the list. If I were you, I'd call and find out ASAP as to what you can do to improve on next cycle. It's only a couple months until AMCAS can be submitted for next year and you need to know these answers sooner rather than later to address them.

I wouldn't worry about being a bother, if you were on the AWPA list, they should be more than happy to give you some input on your application.

Just found out I'm in the bottom quartile so it looks like this probably won't be my year, although I can hope a lot of people with acceptances decide to go elsewhere. I did get in somewhere else, so I guess I can start preparing for that. I really liked SIU. Good luck everyone.

I think what you may have heard and misinterpreted was "nearly everyone we accept comes from the AWPA list"???

Everyone they accept does come from the AWPA list, but not everyone on the AWPA list is accepted.

Yearly about 40 people on the AWPA list are never accepted.

Correct. Or at least that's how I understand it. I was just trying to help that other person maybe remember what she heard, because I don't think she actually heard that if you make it to the AWPA you'll get in.

No, I wasn't confusing this. If I remember correctly, it was stated that the "vast majority of those receiving an AWPA letter will be accepted, and although anti-climactic, if [you] receive one, you should feel good about it." A high % (ranged) stat who are accepted from AWPA was given, but since I am not positive that I remember the exact numbers, i wouldn't want to post it on a forum.

Also, the statistic could be correct - all acceptances are from the list, after all, and the school knows historically what its acceptance rate is - but I am doubtful given the number of posts (this year and last year) on this thread from those who are still awaiting a call. Without knowing how large the wait list currently is, it's impossible to say.

the majority of people on the AWPA list are accepted.

Keep in mind that the quarters don't consider all of the AWPA people. There could have been 150 people "Accepted" for the 72 spots (or more) before the list is quartered. I'm not sure how many "acceptances" we give in a year, and I know they don't release how many AWPA's are given every year.

Dr. Constance told me that so far this year there has been very little movement. I interpreted this as they haven't had to offer many more than the 72 acceptances, but thats just a guess.

Last year the last few people in the top quarter got acceptances as late as the first week of May. I'm still optimistic 🙂

Second quarter! Dr. Constance seemed fairly assuring that I would get in, but it may just be a while. And if he was positive, then that makes me positive (for now). 🙂 He also mentioned to me about not much movement on the list, and people holding onto several spots. Good luck to all!

I know one person giving up their spot, so let the movement begin!

I would like to give up my spot. Should I call or submit in writing?

Just call them, preferably today 🙂 jk!!!! Where'd you decide to go?

Hahah. I got offered a fully funded MD/PhD position at UIUC. And I got an email saying I would be offered an MD/PhD MSTP position at UIC very soon. Just got to be patient! I'm a huge research fan, which was a big negative for me about SIU. But they produce good doctors, and I'm sure you guys will all do great!

I have an aunt and uncle who graduated from here a couple decades ago. Now they are wicked rich in paradise valley in Arizona with one working as an ophthalmologist and the other at the Mayo Clinic there.

Best of luck to you. Advice: Take Chicago. MUCH MUCH better. My friends at the other campuses are significantly less satisfied.

Yeah. I was planning on taking Chicago just because it's a new place and a new experience. And surprisingly, there are quite a few more researchers at UIC who interest me. I was kind of surprised by how uninterested I was in UIUC's research. I love the lab I'm in now. But I don't want my grad work to be an extension of undergrad. I'm alllll about new experiences.

But I just got a waitlist letter from Stanford. So i'm :xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf: that it will pan out. My bf is going there for grad shcool. 🙁 I would hate to be so far apart!

I hope you get into Stanford, I know what its like having to go to school away from a boyfriend. I did it during undergrad. Luckily he will be following me to SIU...that is if I get in! 🙂

Thanks. 🙂 I'm going to do everything I can. But unfortunately, almost all interviewees who don't get accepted get waitlisted. But I guess it makes sense when you consider how selective they are for interviews that the interview pool is pretty much what they're looking for. I just wish that it wasn't a school that everyone else who is waitlisted ALSO wants to get into as bad as I do hahah.

God and it would suck even worse because if I don't go to Stanford, I am definitely doing MD/PhD. Which is just THAT many more years away from him because he wants to stay in California. He's an engineer and entrepreneur who wants to start his own company. And there's pretty much no better place to be!

Well I talked to Dr. Constance today. He stated that I was in the first quarter and to expect an acceptance before the end of the month. If those of us in the first quarter get accepted this month then that means that they might make it well into the second quarter earlier rather than latter. Good luck everyone.

I am on the second quartile. This is my second time applying... I don't know if I should be excited or disappointed. Last year I was on the AWPA list and told I was in the third quartile. I obviously never received admittance. I am sort of in a bind now since my lease for my apartment ends June 1st. What should I dooooooo. Hope for the best and don't renew my lease... or be realistic and sign again.

It's hard telling. It depends on where in the second quartile you are and how much the list moves. :-/

Also, If you are coming to SIU you might want to bookmark this page: https://www.siumed.edu/yoc/

Your academic calender is on that already and you should have access to it in a few days if you have been accepted.

This may vary depending on whether or not you live in a family owned or big apartment complex and any number of various differences, but you may be able to get a prorated or slightly inflated monthly rate if you ask to stay for another month. Otherwise, you could probably find a summer lease. They are more expensive, but convenient. Though, that might not be the case if you don't live in a campus town or something.
