Hey guys I've been wanting to make this post for a long time. Basically it's a summary of my application process and what not to do to gain admission to a US MD program (apparently). I am writing this mostly for therapeutic reasons so feel free to ignore. I don't want to rain on everyone's well deserved jubilation.

I attended an Illinois state school. I'm from southern Illinois. I knew early on in undergrad I wanted to do medicine, but I underperformed in my med prereqs. Mistake #1. I started off as a Bio major but switched to Chemistry. By the end of my 4th year, my grades took an upturn but due to my bad start I ended up with a 3.59 cum and 3.35 sci gpa (nonsci GPA was 4.0, but I took many sci classes for my major).

I didn't apply to med school right after graduation and took a year off to volunteer at hospitals and shadow doctors, as well as take the MCAT. I took the MCAT in July and scored a 31 (10 11 10 P). So here comes mistake #2. I submitted my AMCAS in August and it wasn't processed until September. I didn't get most secondaries (including SIU's) until October. I interviewed at SIU in November and I thought it went very well. No other schools showed me any love. I didn't apply extremely broadly, just all Illinois schools and several private out of states I thought I had a chance at. I favored SIU from the start so I wasn't very worried about it. I figured it was just "meant to be" and just waited for the AWPA.

The AWPA, along with significant joy for my family and I, arrived in January. Then the Feb batch was released, and nothing. March followed, and worry set in. I called SIU and was told I'm in the 3rd quartile and it doesn't look good. At this point I had to make a decision. I could either sit around and wait for nothing to happen, or take action.

Medicine is my passion. Over the past year, my volunteering at my city hospitals has solidified my desire to enter medicine. Therefore, I applied to St. George's University in the Caribbean and was accepted for this fall. Obviously, if SIU accepts me I would drop SGU in an instant. I know the Caribbean isn't the smartest option in this day an age, but frankly I can't sit around for another year waiting on an acceptance that isn't a guarantee. Actually, the thing that worries me most about SGU isn't the limited residency spots available or the stigma about Caribbean docs, it's mostly just being so far away from Illinois. Far away from the people I know and love.

I still love SIU, and am still almost considering waiting it out another year, but I know I need to improve my application and I don't really know where to start. I would have got to go to medical school only 100 miles away from my family who are the most important thing in my life, in an environment that is greatly familiar to me. But I guess as the old Stones song goes "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find...you get what you need."

So future applicants heed my warnings: Get your crap together and apply straight out of college, keep your GPA up and apply EARLY. I don't think the timing I applied had any bearing on my place on AWPA at SIU, but it probably affected my chances elsewhere.

If, through some twist of fate and/or divine intervention I end up at SIU School of Medicine this year, I will be thrilled. If not, this application cycle taught me many things. I think SIU's application process could be properly described as a roller coaster that for some people ends with you getting off the ride laughing as you saw your life flash before your eyes (acceptance) and others crash landing at the end. (stuck on AWPA).

Anyway, again I'm sorry to be a downer. The last month has been hard for me because acceptance (in the sense of the "five stages of grief" and the med school kind) have still not hit me.

Take care, and best of luck to all of you in the future.

EDIT: I forgot my final mistake. I didn't apply to DO schools. Maybe I couldn't gotten in, maybe not.

I understand your disappointment, but you need some perspective. Going to the Carribbean is a rash decision and one that you do not need to make. You are very close to being where you need to be for a US acceptance. You should know that your stats are very competitive for DO schools. DO schools seem to fare better in the residency process than Carribbean grads. Do you really want to take the risk of not getting a good residency because you don't want to take a year off FROM SCHOOL (not from life--remember this.)

Keep in mind that SIU is very good to reapplicants. Just on SDN there are 4 reapplicants that have been accepted for this year, including myself. I feel that I have grown a lot in this year and have earned my acceptance. I have no regrets.

You choose how you spend your time away from school. You are not "wasting" a year unless you literally do nothing. I am working in research hopefully toward publications, I had ample time to develop a strong relationship with my SO, I took 2 vacations on my researcher's salary and got in really good physical shape. I am refreshed and energized to start school. You can either take 1 or 2 years off to get where you really want to be or you can rush into a decision that will affect you for the rest of your 30+ year career. It is ultimately your decision.

I hope I have given you another point of view and possibly some hope as a reapplicant. Feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss anything else.

Question for Red/Caesar: is it worth waiting to purchase your stethoscope during orientation? Are the deals really that good? I have found a decent price online and I have a specific color in mind. I am also just excited, lol. Should I wait or can I go ahead and get it and start wearing it around my neck all day, everyday? You know, to the mall, etc.:meanie:

I actually got mine as a gift from a doc who got it cheaper than I could have ever gotten it so I didn't pay much attention to prices at orientation. Caesar has a better memory than me so maybe he'll remember but I think if you can find a good price online and know the one you want, you could probably go ahead and buy it.

I love it when you call me Caesar.

Thanks guys! I found a website that laser engraves the Littman Cardiology III for free, total cost under $150. Seemed comparable from what I had seen online.

somehow, i found the equipment order sheet they passed out during orientation and the Cardio III was $147 and the Master Cardio was $178. you might as well order it early and get it laser engraved...reward yourself for getting in 🙂

Hi everyone and congrats on everyone who has been accepted so far! I am a 3rd year med student at SIU (just 5 short weeks from being a 4th year!). Getting into med school was one of the most amazing days of my life! For those of you still waiting, try to keep hanging in there. I know what it is like to wait around - I got accepted May 14, 2008. I have found medical school to be the most challenging thing I have ever done and also one of the most fun things I have ever done.

I have been lurking around this thread for some time now but finally wanted to chime in and say something. SIU is an amazing school and you all are going to love it! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I would be happy to try and help anyone out. I was in charge of the Student to Student Handbook for the class of 2013 and was also the chair of the Welcoming Committee for the class of 2013 as they transitioned from Carbondale to Springfield.

This is where I lived in Carbondale:

It was AMAZING - one of the nicest places to live. Less than 10 min drive to school. I think the prices have gone up since I lived there, but I paid $650 for a 1 bedroom one bathroom and it was totally worth it. Myself and 2 other classmates ended up living there.

Let me know what other questions you have!!! (A saying that they teach you at SIU SOM!)

John Lennon, I was also in the third quartile (found out in march), i got an acceptance last week and was given a week to decide but chose to decline it. I think the list is moving more than in previous years and there is still hope for you. So keep the faith and things should work out and if not apply again. The Caribbean is a dramatic conclusion after only one year and if you do have to apply again, do so broadly and you should be fine. Anyways hope you get an acceptance. GL

Thanks for the encouragement, I won't lose faith in SIU until August when I leave but at the same time I am a realist. I already took a year off so this would be another year of waiting but I understand what you are saying.

Oh and did you know Man U and Barca are playing each other in a friendly in Washington DC in July? Should be a cool rematch of the CL final, hopefully it will turn out differently than that game! I mention this because of your avatar.

I didn't know about the game in DC but i know they're coming here to Chicago to play the fire (I'll try to go if not to busy). I'm a big Man U fan and a consistent futbol player. I wish we won the CL but such is life. Anyways good luck to you in whatever choice you make and end up doing, wishing you the best.

I am surprised to hear about some people not getting in. Many SOM students have scores and grades considerably lower. I would be interested in hearing any more details (please PM me).
