anyone know if closed or open interview format is used and on which campus?

Good question - I know Phoenix has a new format called the MMI - multiple mini interview, but I wonder if the people interviewing will know about us?

Has anyone interviewed in Tucson yet? Wasn't this the first week? I don't interview on either campus until Oct.

I can tell you that the MMIs at Phoenix are all "closed" in the sense that your interviewer will not have access to student files beforehand. And it seems so long ago to me now but I believe my interview at Tucson was open.

Too bad Lrk dropped off the face of the planet (med school too tough for baby?) or else he could tell us that.

Anyone who feels they have been waiting to hear back from Phoenix for an unusually long period of time, call the admissions office to verify whether they received your signature form/check/photo. Turns out mine were lost in the mail and they just now sent an email letting me know that they had yet to receive those items.

Sure, "lost in the mail"...heard that before

Lol, I swearz!

It is a bit baffling, however. I know I put the correct address/# of stamps/return address.

Well, at least you called and checked in. I imagine it is hard for one person (prob Wendy, that's who I usually talk to) to know what 3,000 applicants are doing...I am sure once they get your stuff, you'll be invited to interview based on your scores you posted.

Wendy was nice enough to actually email me about not receiving the documents. Otherwise I wouldn't have called for at least a few weeks 😱

Not knowing the full particulars of the situation I'll only venture to say that if there was a problem it was very likely of the "en-route" nature. Wendy and the rest of the admissions team are absolute consummate professionals. This isn't me sucking up or anything- you'll see on your interview day that it's the absolute truth. There are indeed a lot of applications going in but I can guarantee you that they simply don't get misplaced. Worry that there was a problem in transit, worry that the staff is overworked and backed up adjusting to the drastic changes going on with the interviews, but don't worry that your materials ever get misplaced or lost once they're here. 🙂

I don't doubt it. In a situation like this, I would blame the USPS every time

I'm still here, I've just taken more of an observational role, unless I feel my input is needed. You're clearly letting your gunner-side show on here and answering all the questions, which has made my input unnecessary. Plus, with the start of football time my free time is largely dedicated to watching football.

As for the interviews in Tucson, they were closed file last year. I am pretty sure this is still the format. Actually, the first interviews here in Tucson were this past Wednesday, so if any of those people happened to check these boards they could tell us for sure what this year's interview is like. Honestly though, if they interviewed on the first day they're probably too big of gunners to help us here on SDN.

Good to know that you're still here, watching from up close like a creepy next door neighbor. Seriously though, good to know that you're doing okay. As long as my gunner side stays confined to SDN I'll be a happy camper. It's kind of weird- there is literally not a single gunner in our class of 48. Wonder if that's the same with you guys.

Like I said last year, girls secretly love guys who sneak in their house and watch them sleep...it makes them loved.

Its weird, I'm like the only gunner here. I'm sure you know how it feels being all alone, "accidentally" dumping your soda on some one's laptop so they can't study as much as us. Actually, we have a super laid back class.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on campus next week for the first day of interviews....

*Jaws music*

Scheduled my Phoenix interview for Nov. 15

Feels like such a late date to be interviewing, especially with only 48 spots available 🙁

I don't know that it's all that late. I signed up for Tucson and Phoenix within a day or two of one another. Tucson had openings in mid-late September, while the first opening at Phoenix was late October. I'd guess PHX either starts interviews later, or do fewer each day.

I'm sure you're right, it did appear on the Phoenix appointment book that they generally interviewed only once a week.

Nice avatar btw

Could someone explain what it means when Tucson says they do a "semi" rolling basis? Thanks so much!

They have a copy of your personal statement and the experiences section of AMCAS. So not entirely open, but not entirely closed either.

Will it be like this for all of us or does the interviewer get to chose?

Also does anyone know if med students conduct some of the interviews and if med students participate in the admissions committee when selecting students to accept/reject?

Where'd you hear/read this? That does not sound like a sound commitment to me...I "kinda" think you are worth accepting to our med school :meanie:

I think it means that they are on a rolling basis, but they do re-review your application as the cycle progresses. Maybe someone else can explain it better.

Yeah I have no idea what that means, your guess is as good as mine.

As for the person asking about student interviewers at Phoenix four fourth year students sit on the admissions committee but students do not interview due to our schedules. I think there were a few anecdotal accounts a couple of pages back about fourth year students interviewing at Tucson and I'm sure a handful are also on the admissions committee.

First acceptances go out in December. If you're not accepted during the first round, they keep your file around for review and re-review your file along with all new interviewees files. They continue to offer acceptances until March when final decisions are made (waitlist, accept, reject).

Thank you so much! So I guess this means if you interview sometime before November you'll be considered for the first round?

There ya go. It sounds different this year then from what I remember last year. I do remember at Phoenix my interviewer told me they had the option to look at your file. The reason I remember that is because he told me that he ONLY looked at my GPA and MCAT. I thought that was really weird...

Apparently some 4th year med students do conduct interviews here in Tucson. As I said before, this won't hurt you. If anything, I think it is more beneficial because med students just went through the same thing not long ago and we can answer your questions from a student's perspective (the only perspective that should matter to you as a prospective student).

Also, there are students from all years on the admissions committee.

Thank you so much! So I guess this means if you interview sometime before November you'll be considered for the first round?

I interviewed on September 14th in Phoenix and on October 27th in Tucson last year and was accepted on December 4th (the "first round"). I don't know how far into November you can go and still be considered for the first round, but I was very surprised that my late October interview was reviewed for the first round. I guess it depends how backed up they are.

In reality, it doesn't matter that much. I know first years who interviewed after I was already accepted and they're here. I'm not any more of a med student because I was accepted on the first day. We all have to work our asses off regardless. With that said, I understand wanting to know as soon as possible that you are accepted somewhere and that this whole mess of **** is actually going to be worth the hassle.

wow, that's REALLY early in december. do you know how long each gap is between acceptance waves?

Why is Tucson waiting until Dec? Phoenix will begin offering spots in mid-October, this from the presentations I attended this summer by the admissions office.

They don't start reviewing until November, so....

My Tucson interview is in October, so I am less concerned about waiting until Nov to be reviewed by the adcomm. Sucks to be the Sept group --- why bust it to interview in sept if they sit on the file until Nov. Seems unnecessarily long. Adcomm activities are a mystery! Would love to know how it all works because I am sure there is a rationale explanation of why a school would wait until Dec to accept when others, like Phoenix, are announcing in Oct. Oh well. Here's to an early x-mas present, I guess. :xf:

I am happy to say that I have at least one interview under my belt now. I interviewed at U of A Tucson earlier this week. Overall I was really impressed. All of the students seemed really excited and happy to be there. The lunch left something to be desired (but what would you expect). The tour was pretty informational and laid back. I was really impressed by the facilities, and the ArizonaMed curriculum is awesome. If I have one piece of advice regarding the interview, it is to JUST RELAX! I was super nervous going into the interview, but it was nothing more than a conversation. U of A Tucson does not look at the interview as an opportunity for them to stress you out or grill you. Before I knew it, over an hour had flown by and we were still talking. So, everyone out there stressing out over the interview should just chill out. Just try to be yourself and have fun. Of course, there are a couple answers I wish I would have answered a little bit differently, but I am confident that I did just fine. Good luck to everyone!

can anyone report on the UA-Phoenix interview?

I believe they were accepting people every couple of weeks, but I don't recall exactly. You can check this out on last year's thread to get a better idea.

I have no idea. I remember last year wishing they (and every other school for that matter) would start accepting people October 15th. They may want to wait to get a bigger pool of applicants to know better who they have to choose from. I really don't know...

I saw some interviewees come through the MDLs (the rooms with all the LCD TVs) yesterday while I was studying. I'm not sure if you were one of them, but I was there.

I'm glad the interview went well for you. This is a good place to have your first interview because it is so relaxed (unlike those terrible Phoenix interviews where you have 10 different people torture you for an hour :meanie:).

Congrats! I bet it does feel good to have it done! I can't wait until my interview! So just to confirm you just have one interviewer in Tucson right? And were they faculty or a physician that works at UMC? Any curveball questions? Thanks for your input!

I have heard that during previous cycles it was required of Tucson applicants to interview with a local physician at a separate time and place than the on-campus interview. I haven't received any information about this from admissions; did they discontinue it?

I am pretty sure they did.

Hey, could someone on this forum please let me know if University of Arizona accepts international (Canadian) students- specficially the Phoenix campus?

I read online that they accept non-residents now, but does this include Canadians?

Thanks!

Interview in two days! This school is my top choice so I'm really excited but a bit terrified since it is my first....

I'm from California and have received interview invites to both campuses. Keep the faith, love!

Cool. I'm not applying this cycle, but lived in AZ from 03-08 and would really like to move back there for med school. Technically I'm OOS state now.

Hey, I saw a bunch of you "suits" on campus yesterday for UACOM-Phoenix's first day of interviews, and it got me all excited for application season! Good luck to all of you... oh, and you guys who interviewed yesterday looked great! 👍

The MMI format rocks. I was really impressed how smooth the process was, especially because yesterday was the first day U of A implemented the MMI. I was really nervous going into the interview, but it was actually pretty fun! Hope to hear back on November 15th...

I think October 15th is the first day where something like at most 6 or 7 applicants may be accepted out of, I'm guessing, 48 applicants interviewed in Sept and October.
