Any OOSers receive this email yet?

"Thank you for your interest in The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix for the entering class of 2011. After careful review of your AMCAS and Secondary Application, we have determined to keep your file active and under review for a potential interview invitation at a later time. Reviews are continuous, with no definitive date on the calendar by when we will reach a conclusion."

I think I just got the pre-interview hold email 🙁 . I'm OOS and have no ties to Arizona, but I have a strong interest in their curriculum design, clinical sites, and city of Phoenix. Does anybody know if people actually get out of this hold?

I also just received this email. I tried contacting the school for more information but went straight to voicemail.

hey guys! got my first interview at University of Arizona-Phoenix today!

I am an OOS (Cali) applicant with a 3.61/30.

Its strange because UA-Tucson was my first and fastest rejection (eve b4 BU!)

Woohoo, first interview invite! I'm super happy, I just submitted my secondary last week... IS 3.7/36. Hope I do well on the interview... I'm guessing it will be the first I go to!

I'll be down in Tucson on September 28th for the afternoon slot if anyone wants to meet up and stress out over some breakfast 🙂

Congratulations to everyone receiving interview invites! I'm super excited to see you around school in a couple weeks. Best of luck!

Looks like Tucson is having mock interviews this morning. I decided against signing up to do them (our first test is Monday, so I opted for studying instead), so I completely forgot that they were this morning. I hope they go well, because they are holding them in the room I always study in...😡 jk, I'm not really upset, I did them last year (in Phoenix), so I know how beneficial they are.

Interview invite 🙂

Received the complete email this morning

Hey, I was wondering if the last essay on the secondary application (the one concerning hardships and adversity) is optional. If it is, would it be best to complete it nevertheless?

If the prompt does not specifically mention that it is optional; it is not. However, I would still recommend writing something since many medical school interviewers will ask you to describe a similar situation in an interview. Writing a nice paragraph or two about such a situation will make your interviews run much more smoothly.

I would only write something if you can come up with a relatively compelling situation without scraping the bottom of the barrel for it. If the toughest challenge you've had to deal with in life (and believe me, I've seen candidates on the interview trail like this...) was that one day where the chauffeur was sick so you had to drive the Ferrari to your prestigious east coast college prep high school yourself, you're better off respectfully leaving it blank. Father's team of corporate lawyers wrote all of my secondary essays for me, so unfortunately I can't give you any pertinent examples of hardship, but I know my app had them.

Are you being serious?

sounded pretty optional to me - it's asking for any reasons you might have regarding blemishes on your academic record. if you have a 3.7+ i don't see any possible reason to write anything.

As director of the SDN block I'm afraid I have to give you a loss of professionalism points for egregious sentence fragments and a lack of capitalization. Quite frankly, sir, we expect more from our medical students.

The bird law that in this country is not governed by reason? I wouldn't include that on your application.

I disagree. My knowledge of bird law takes me and my application to the next level. See the article entitled "Bird Law and its impact on Applications" in the 69th Edition of the Journal of Admissions, where knowledge of bird law is correlated to have the same effect as 5 additional points on the Medical College Admissions Test.

Consider yourself out-lawyered. I'm out.

Took me a week to get an invite from Phoenix. Complete with Tucson on Monday, still haven't heard.

On another note.....
I have a theory I am being "playa hated" by Price-Johnson and the only reason I got the invite from Phoenix after four years was because this is the first year there is a separate director and committee reviewing invites for Phoenix......

Doubtful. Unless you hit her with your car or teepeed her house or something.

Has anyone received different prompts for the MD/PhD programs at either campus? If so, can someone please post them?

Thanks!

"Deutsch Arzt", huh? That's funny, last year this thread had a "der Arzt".

Interviews at both campuses! Bomb diggity. OOS 3.5/29P.

Tucson:
Complete 8/6/10
Invite 8/9/10
Interview 9/22/10

Phoenix:
Complete 8/18/10
Invite 9/1/10
Interview haven't picked it yet

Looking forward to seeing everyone's lovely face.

Phoenix interviews start the 20th of September. Whether all the spots are full to November or not is something I don't know.

Looks to be that way... maybe its an OOS thing

For OOSers that seems like it could be really inconvenient if you also have an interview at Tucson months apart. I might send an email to the admissions office here to see if you can squeeze in closer to your Tucson date or push your Tucson date out to your Phoenix one. Hate to see you spend even more money interviewing at schools that are only two hours apart with separate trips.

Can someone tell me whether Phoenix sends a 'complete' email or not? Thanks

Does Tucson? Doesn't make sense to get a "complete" email if we still have to interview? I am not scheduled to interview in Phoenix until mid-Oct.

Thank you guys very much for your input! It helped immensely.

Yes, Tucson does. And yes, it makes sense. The 'complete' refers to the pre-interview application materials.

Phoenix has an applicant tracking site that gives me an idea of where I am in the process at all times - I don't need an email message to say "I am complete"...I submitted my application materials and received an interview, so what more can I do to be "complete"? I suppose a letter can be missing, but that's on me to know and not a secretary answering the phone. Personal responsibility is a virtue to survive MD admissions.

If you have received an interview, getting a complete email or not is beyond your concern. For someone yet to receive an interview, it can let you know when your application is actually entering the audit process. Many schools utilize it.

Just got an interview invite from Tucson! I was complete on Monday. Does anyone have any advice from past experience as to whether the morning or afternoon time slot provides any advantages/disadvantages?

I scheduled three interviews in a row. I am interviewing at Phoenix on Monday October 11th, at Tucson in the afternoon on the 12th, and at Midwestern in Glendale, AZ on the 13th. I figured this would be a good thing, but does anyone strongly disagree? I am a Phoenix resident so travel is not that big of a deal. Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

It's a matter of personal preference (and I don't think you get to choose at Phoenix) but I enjoy morning slots because I could get the interview out of the way and then enjoy the lunch, interactions, tour, etc. relatively non-stressed out. And it's fine that all your interviews here are back-to-back. Just make sure that you get a good night's sleep between each one.

Is it possible to find out who will be interviewing us at the Tucson campus?

I think I remember us being told the person's name the day of the interview. At Phoenix, you got a sheet with some information on their background and research interests etc. Don't know if that's going to hold for the MMI format but in all honesty it doesn't really matter. You don't want to do tons of research the night before so that you can converse about their PhD level research because that shows them you can't freewheel and go with the flow instead of rigorously preparing. It's actually better not to know because you can ask them, show interest, and then show versatility in engaging them in good conversation about it without the coaching or roleplaying beforehand.

According to the Phoenix status site, my application has been complete since the 18th of August. I'm an in-state applicant with a 31R/4.00. I assumed I would be getting an interview invite right away (I didn't feel this was an arrogant assumption), but I'm starting to get a bit nervous. Does anyone have any idea why it is taking so long to hear back from them? Thanks all

Welcome to the medical school admissions process! Patience is a virtue, my friend. 🙂
