Hello!

I interviewed just couple weeks ago on Feb 24. I'm still waiting for my decision but my work in research just got submitted to a journal for publication. Is this a good time to send the update or should I wait for the decision?
Also anybody know when does the UCI adcom meet?
thanks!

I know that Dr. Peterson said not to send anything, but I sent an update letter (not interest) a week after my interview since I have been doing stuff since I turned in my secondaries. It was important to let them know that. I got an email back saying that they would include it in my file...and I got in! So, it might help you, especially since I feel Irvine likes research.

Thanks! I'll do that for sure!
If you don't mind, can I ask for your stats?
thanks,

I just wrote up an update letter, but I don't know what e-mail address to send it to.

Sent an e-mail to the general admissions address asking this but they did not get back to me. Now that its the weekend, I'm hoping one of you can help.

I don't know of any email other than the general one. You could try calling them on Monday to make sure that they received the letter. When I called earlier in the year they were super nice and helpful.

Does anyone know how much time UCI allows for studying for step 1? Also, is a step 1 prep course still offered?

I heard they get 2 months off and there is a Kaplan prep course offered with a significant discount, if I recall correctly.

cool, thanks. I remembered hearing something about it, but couldn't remember specifics. Of course, what I am really interested in right now is when financial aid packages come out 😀.

2 months. Now down to more like 1.5 because third year starts early and so does 4th year (which is really good for your fourth year). Still have Kaplan course - about half the class takes it. They offer additional loans to cover it if you need it.

Really depends on when you got accepted. Some of my classmates first year got it in June. I got accepted late and received mine the day before classes started.

In general, they don't offer much in the way of merit aid unless you are in Prime.

The majority of free money is need-based. In general, if your parents make less than 80-100k (I think its 100k but I can't remember) then you will receive enough grant to fill in the rest of tuition above Stafford loans (so you won't need Grad Plus loans). Eg. first year costs 45k, 40k can be covered by Staffords, they give you 5k in grants/institutional based loans to cover the difference; 2nd year costs 50k, 40k can be covered by Staffords so they give you 10k in grants/institutional loans.

Thanks alwaysaangle. Your posts have been really helpful 🙂

eh, id say its still pretty much two months. We were done getting new material the first week of March. Anything after that is essentially board studying, there are just a couple of shelves you have to take during that time as well.

Yeah but it is cut down from what we had. We used to get 2 months AFTER the last shelf. When you added in the shelf study time and spring break it almost 11 weeks! Still more than enough now with 2 months!

damn, yea thats a long time. Seems a little excessive haha. I dont think I'd be able to push myself for that long I'd go crazy...im already almost at that point and havent even got in to the thick of things yet!

edit: we also dont get a scheduled "spring break." Not that that means anything except more time to study. How long did you guys get to study for the path/pharm shelves? We get 4 days!

Also interviewed 2/24, I guess my fate at UCI is sealed, I just don't know the outcome yet.

Good luck to all waiting for a decision or hoping to get accepted from the waitlist.

The weird thing is that I got my acceptance call on 2/27, but my acceptance letter, which arrived a few days later, was dated 2/16. They knew, but they waited 11 days to tell me!!

I had sent them a post-interview letter of interest on 2/14, I wonder if they even looked at it... I guess it doesn't matter 🙂.

Hmmm, I interviewed 2/8 and still no status change. Weird.

+1 for alwaysaangle being totally badass!

JUST GOT MY ACCEPTANCE CALL!!!!!! 😍 😍 😍

ACCEPTED! Got the call at 6:30 today. I went to UCI for undergrad and worked at the medical center during my year(s) off. So excited to be an anteater again!

Good luck to anyone interviewing on Wednesday! :luck:

Hey everyone!
So i was waitlisted at UCI, and im dying to know roughly how many people get waitlisted here? its getting pretty late and this waitlist is keeping me on edge :scared:.

I was waitlisted too. So sad bc UCI is one of my top choices. 38 / 3.88/ IS, thought my interview went well.🙁

most applicants are waitlisted after the interview (about 2/3).

Ya I was rejected last Friday and had submitted a fafsa for uci before being rejected and just received an email today saying uci received my fafsa info. Man talk about kicking a person while they are already down.

thats brutal! sorry to hear about the rejection

All of the UCs have "free" tuition, but the "fees" total ~30k. Look on the UCI website or the msar for the actual COA.

Oh I know, it just seems misleading lol. But what do you mean by the UCs have "free" tuition? I did look up the fees, there's all these "educational fees" and "professional school fees"... sounds like tuition to me, or is there a difference? (sorry if this is a dumb question).

It is essentially tuition. In the past, California decided all of the CA public schools should be free. However, that ended up not being feasible. To make up the budget deficit the university started charging students fees. So, even though it isn't called tuition it really is, but it is called "fees."

This might explain it better (particularly look at 1960):

Hey babaganosh or anyone else-- to what email address did you send your update. And did anyone else get a confirmation that they would include it in your file?

[email protected]

Yes, I got an email confirmation within 3 days of emailing them an update (Nov) and also when I sent a letter of interest (Feb).

Yeah, that whole fee/tuition thing is a joke. They even voted on it last year to make it tuition to be less confusing, for some reason they kept it how it is.

Apparently this whole fee/tuition thing is actually pretty bad for military veterans using the GI bill. The bill covers "tuition" but not "fees." However I'm sure it is easy enough to get around that though.

Does UCI have a "second look" day? I am (fortunately) trying to decide between a few schools and would like another, less stressful, perspective.

Also, what was UCI's class schedule like? I remember it being kinda random. Every week different classes/number of classes.

its not random...you can count on a pretty consistent schedule. First year, most days are class 8-12. One or two days a week you may have a class in the afternoon. There are no labs until you start anatomy in November. Then you have to be around school more for being in lab.

2nd year there is more class time scheduled (keep in mind 95% of this is not mandatory). Class is is more consistently scheduled from around 8-3. But again, this is not mandatory, and most people don't go. They are trying to make it less class time, and theyve also extended the 2nd year by two weeks, which makes it less crammed.

I believe there's a 2nd look day this year, but it changes yearly b/c its a pretty expesnive day to have so each year they talk about whether it is worth doing it or not. My year didn't have one, last year they did, and i heard that they were this year too but thats not a gaurantee.

My packet had a flyer that said "Revisit Day" will be on May 7th. 🙂

people have mentioned that they had something telling them when a decision was going to be made on them "Decision Pending date."

Where is this date listed? nothing is on my application status page. The last thing updated was my interview earlier this month

Congrats to everyone who got in!

I've also been waitlisted and I'm just wondering around when the waitlist will start to move. Thanks!

alwaysaangel, how did UCI do in the match this year?

Also, Congrats! It looks like you got EM at UCI 🙂.

Probably not until May 15th when students have to drop all other acceptances.

UCI still has a couple of more interview days during which they will accept more people. While not impossible, it is unlikely they will start pulling from the waitlist until they are done with that and get enough people dropping to have openings in the class. Likely late May/early June.

Decent. Probably on par with prior years. Like all schools, a few people had to scramble (mostly people who had their advanced program and needed a prelim so not a big deal).

The vast majority of people were very happy on match day. They usually tell us that 80% of us get one of our top 3 choices, I would guess that was true again this year, but I'm honestly not sure because I don't know everyone's list.

Match list should be out next week, although I'm not sure UCI gives out a public list, I think we just get the one with students names on it.

I think they'll be sharing the match list with accepted students once they get the "Accepted Students" website up. Last year's list was quite impressive. I'm not sweating match day - I think UCI sets us up well for getting a great match.

 They do set you up well.

But you'll sweat it when it comes. Even if you're getting your top 3 they could be all over the country depending on what you listed. No matter where you go the stress of the possibility of suddenly moving and the stress of being rejected by x programs in one second in front of hundreds of people will get to you.

But now that its over - I enjoyed my match day.

I've heard of some people holding onto their match letters to open with family - did anyone do that from your class?

a handful of people didn't attend (and notified them of that ahead of time so they wouldn't be called). 2 took their envelopes and walked off the stage. Its not the common action at our match day.

Thanks for the reply! So this means the waitlist consists of 300-400 people? the reason why i ask is because i do remember hearing that roughly 1/3 get accepted immediately after interviewing and 2/3 get waitlisted, but I also heard of some post interview rejections as well and i wasnt sure where those fit in to the equation.

Anyone get a financial aid package?

I've submitted my FAFSA and completed all the documents requested in the acceptance package and online.

Also, anyone know when we take out our sub and unsub loans?

It takes a while. Some people dont get their financial aid offers until late summer. Your aid will be disbursed about 3 days into your orientation after the entrance interview.
