no not really

Yes it does, I just got in off of the alternate. I had no idea, but then I got an email that said,

"Dear future Anteater,

Welcome the the UCI School of Medicine....blah blah telling me about Revisit Weekend."

And I thought, isn't Revisit Weekend for accepted students. I didn't get a congratulatory acceptance email like I did for every other school (however, I am currently living out of the country and do not have access to phone or my home mail so that's probably why)...then I checked my status and it said Accepted instead of Alternate List. AKA the WL has moved.

My stats: 3.63 cGPA, 3.70 sciGPA, 39Q mcat (I had a horrendous interview with a really boring and blah woman who turned me off to the school a lot, plus I got into a couple top 20s so I am almost certainly going to decline their offer barring an incredible financial aid offer which equals more movement on the WL)...good luck to everyone.

congrats! 👍 should have clarified, most of the movement occurs after said date.

Anyone know when orientaition starts and what we do? I know in past years they had an entering students webpage, but I guess they don't have it any longer. Also, anyone interested in living off campus and moving in early (like the begining of July)?

thanks!

unless theyve adjusted start time for first year (havent heard about that happening), orientation started around august 6th or 7th, with the white coat ceremony happening that Saturday and then school starting the following Wed.

You do some of the necessary busy work/paper work kinda stuff, there are fun events planned during the day and in the evenings (bbqs, dave and busters, etc). Youll listen to peopple talk to you about various topics of med school, medicine, etc. Youll take a personality test, haha. Mostly youll just be gettin to know your classmates and get excited for the beginning of school!

For housing, I'd check the 2015 UCI fb group, i know people are communicating through that a lot for housing and stuff.

On the form for the white coat ceremony that comes with the acceptance packet, it says the white coat ceremony (and I presume the first day of orientation) will be on August 5, which is a Friday.

I can't wait!!! 😀

I'm definitely excited about that . I love Apple products, clearly I was meant to go here!! 😍

Sorry if this was asked before, but how good is the iPad with taking notes in class, reading textbooks, etc? How often do you use it?

PS: I heard they're going to come out with the iPad 3 really soon, I'm sure the next class will get that! lol

well, i never use it, cuz i'm a 2nd year, and we were shafted (hence the 😡 face) and didn't give us a damn thang! haha

that would be a good question to ask at 2nd look day if you plan on goin! There will be a bunch of 1st years there who can share their experiences. I live with two first years, and have interacted w/ their classmates throughout the year, and I think its variable with how useful it is during class. I know a lot of people that say tehy dont use them at all. Others probably use it a lot. I think theres an app for anatomy that they use? I just heard the other day that they actually have ipads in the anatomy lab, haha.

Oh okay, thanks. Yup, I'll be going to 2nd look day and I'll ask then 🙂.

Has anyone had issues with residency? I stayed in CA for the past year and UC Irvine STILL thinks my residency is "questionable" despite a CA driver's license, voter registration, proof of leases for the past year, electric bills, CA taxes, an employment contract and pay stubs. I don't know what else to do. I haven't left the state in 2 years and they are just being crazy because in August of last year I still had a out of state license.

Any ideas or has anyone else gone through this process?

How do you know you're considered a non-CA resident by UCI? I haven't heard any word confirming my residency status.

Well, I went in and talked to them today. I am especially nervous because I wasn't considered a resident for undergrad in CA.

When I log into Student Access (http://www.reg.uci.edu/access/student/welcome/), click on "Student Profile," then click on the "Academic" tab, it says "CA Resident Tuition: Non-Resident." I am definitely a CA resident, I was considered a CA resident as a UCI undergrad.

Maybe they haven't processed the SLRs yet? Anyone else have this?

I am beginning to think that everyone is classified as a non-resident until proven a resident. So, I wouldn't worry too much especially if you have been classified as a resident in the past. The chief residency officer said that he would be reviewing the SLRs in the next 2 weeks.

Hey Guy i hope to meet you all during the revisit day!!

I'm having some trouble choosing btw schools; I’ve been accepted by University of Washington, and Duke. and I'm not sure if i want to go to some of the competitive residencies, UCI would an ideal choice, (i hope some med students are here) I love UCI, been here a long time and the Financial Aid is huge factor for me so staying here would be a lot cheaper,

but is it worth it to say no top 2 top 10 med schools in the nations?

any advice would be appreciated.

all my family is in OC, so theyre like 5 minutes away, so thats another huge plus..

I cant bring myself to say no to those schools.....

getting in to a competitive residency really doesnt have anything to do with where you go to med school. Besides, UCI isn't top 10, but its not like you are deciding between Wash U and flying out to the caribbean. UCI is a great school. You will not be limited in any way by choosing to go here. To ease your fears, look at our match list I posted a few pages back - students going to all of the top residencies in the country in specialties across the board...UCSF, UCLA, Stanford, Mayo, U Wash, etc. These students were successful because they worked their ass off and did well in school. A huge part of that is being happy, being surrounded by a good people (your family is a huge part of that!). If you don't feel like you have a support system, you aren't going to do well. You know what I mean? Also, if i remember correctly Duke has a pretty different curriculum than most schools - the basic sciences in a year or so and then you are in the hospital the 2nd year, with a mandatory research/masters year at some point........in my opinion that sounds pretty awesome, but what do you think?! If you dont want to do research or get a Masters, then Duke is probably not the best place for you to go. Also keep in mind that you can always get a masters at UCI, or anywhere for that matter. If you aren't sure you want to do that, you may change your mind later, in which case you could take a year off between 2nd/3rd or 3rd/4th. You could do this to do research or to get an MBA or MPH or whatever you want. Lots of people do this.

You really just need to sit down and think about what each school offers and trying make a decision based what you think will be best for you. The best advice I was ever given was to take care of yourself first. Sounds obvious, but if you are unhappy, sad, stressed, etc. its going to make it a hell of a lot more difficult to do well in school and learn to teh best of your ability. Going to UCI is not going to negatively impact you in any way, so dont let that factor in to your decision whatsoever. Its a great school, with some amazing opportunities. But so are U Wash and Duke! You just need to go where you think you'll be happiest. If you do, you will be happier medical student, a better family member and friend, and in the end, a better doctor!

Hi all,

This is a question directed towards those familiar with the med school. I'll likely be matriculating to UCI this fall. Though I know it's premature to dedicate oneself to particular areas of medicine before actually starting med school, I do have fledgling interests in surgery. I was wondering what were some things that UCI could offer of interest specifically to those interested in surgery.

Also, I noticed that there aren't any students who elect to go to neurosurgery, or perhaps don't match into neurosurgery residencies. Is there a reason for this? Thanks!

There's a surgery interest group. You can get involved with that right away, get a position on the board, etc. You can do research over the summer, or take a year off. I know a lot of people who are doing this (taking a year off). Other that you just need to kick ass at school.

Neurosurgery isn't exactly a popular field to go in to. Its pretty specific, seven+ year residency, pretty grueling hours.... I can think of one person I know, not even at my school, that wants to go into neurosurgery. And if you look at any given matchlist, you won't see very many people, if any, that are going into the field. In fact, if you look at the NRMP data, only 211 allopathic seniors applied to a neurosurgery (309 overall). Thats out of 23K that applied for a PGY-1 position. Compare that to something like internal medicine, which has over 3K applicants.

First things first: uci has plenty of opportunities for surgery research. A lot of my buddies are doing research right now in ortho, ent, plastics, etc..

We have AOA, this will help you in the match if you are accepted into it (note: AOA is redic. hard to get, but you have a shot if you work hard). The time off we get for step 1 should help your board score if you use it wisely.

The surgery interest group is strong, you'll be able to meet and get to know the surgeons at uci. Theres a mentorship program that will match you with a surgeon as a mentor.

As far as neurosurgery, at least two of my classmates are extremely interested in it (one of them isn't really considering any other field) get to know them your first year/get their advice and you'll be off to a good start.

The only limiting resource for pursuing surgery you'll have during med school is time. As long as you work very very hard, you'll match well.

Thank you guys for the input, I appreciate it. My MS-1 student interviewer was a biomedical engineer and he told me he was looking to pursue neurosurgery. Haha I wonder if he's one of the guys you are referring to.

I'll look into the surgery interest group. Thanks 🙂

Got my financial aid package, they were pretty stingy with the gift aid (<5% of the total cost). I wonder if that is typical, or it is due to the CA budget issues. Also, it looks like tuition/fees went up two thousand dollars.

OMG 12 more days.... Please wait list move <3

May 15th can't come soon enough!!! Do you guys think there will be good waitlist movement this year? UCI is my only hope right now :/

I hope, and believe, the movement will be greater than last year.

After months of debating, I finally declined my acceptance here. Good luck to everyone waiting! :luck::luck:

To those of you who were accepted, what time in the day did you get the phone call and did it ever come over the weekend?

Leaving town with no phone access soon and I'm not too pleased with the timing.

I got the phone call around 1:45pm on a Sunday.

6 pm on a Sunday... Halloween, actually.

Way to go, dbeast! Did you interview on 4/4?

Any other waitlists or acceptances from the 4/4 interview? I've been on pins and needles all weekend--obsessively checking my phone and the admissions site.

How did everyone else fare on their financial aid award?

I don't want to say what my gift aid is, but it covers about than 0% of the total cost.

Is this typical for people who have a student contribution of $0 and an expected family contribution of $0 as well?

UCI isn't known for its generous financial aid. And I imagine its getting worse this year across all UCs because of the budget cuts.

It used to be - if your parents made less than 100k/year then you would receive about 5k first year. Basically just enough to help you be covered by Stafford and Grad loans without having to take out private loans to cover the full cost. Not sure if they've changed that, but thats how it used to be.

The FAFSA numbers aren't really useful. Unless a student has a ridiculous amount of savings or a trust fund, they're not going to work anymore while in med school - so the student contribution is 0. And since you are an independent student, despite entering your parents info - its not actually used to calculate the EFC, so that is also 0. Those numbers are basically useless in med school. They use absolute incomes instead.

Any tips on what we can do to help out with paying (scholarships or other)?

Also, do you know any students who are participating in the military HPSP program? if so, do you think they are happy with their decision. I met one on revisit day, but he was hard to read.

I didn't get any gift aid. One of my parents makes too much, but neither of them will pay anything for my medical education (one can't and one won't). Same thing happened with F.A.P., I would've qualified if it weren't for my parents, so I had to pay everything in full.

It's going to be loans all the way for me!

I'd also like to know if there are anymore opportunities to apply for scholarships?

Loans. Thats really it. I never found any scholarships worth wasting my time on. And frankly, when you're looking at pulling out 50k/year in loans...is it really worth spending a week on a 5k scholarship application?

No students in my class did HPSP. Frankly I think its a poor decision unless you would have joined the military anyway. And if you decide after med school or residency that you want to join the military you can join and get deals that will pay back your loans after the fact.

All of those contracts that pay for med school are a bad idea (HPSP, primary care, rural etc). You have no idea what you want to do, and you can always sign up after the fact and have them pay back the loans instead.

How was second look ?? Did a lot of people go?

I thought it was pretty awesome 🙂. Glad to meet some of you and talk to more med students and faculty. They took us on a tour of UCIMC, which I've never had the chance to see (the hospital is quite nice). There were also some interactive workshops where we got to play with ultrasound, laparoscopy, and the simulation mannequins. And lots of free food 😉.

Sounds very exciting!.. Any sense of how many spots in the class may be filled already?

Sorry, I have no idea. They didn't mention anything like that.

However, I remember during interview day they said they accept more people off the waitlist than straight up acceptances, IIRC. So if you're on the waitlist, there's still hope!

GL!!!
