with you there. my 2nd last undergraduate finals week 🙂

since you guys are UCLA...

I'm a transfer student so I missed out on all of the gossip/rumors about the different majors out there. I have been told that MIMG is considered to be the hardest science major at UCLA but I find that hard to believe.

Is this what you guys have heard as well?

omg you guys, i just checked the status page and it says accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy, k thank you so much, i love you all and will see you when i matriculate.

A lot of ppl complain to me that their majors are really hard (biochem, neuroscience, phy sci, mimg, .... ). Then i'd suggest that they look into my major -- applied math + neuroscience. They'd all be like: nvm. However, I don't believe any particular major is harder than the rest. ppl are just good at learning different things. Stick to the major you love. The tougher it is, the more rewarding you will feel in the end.

i already replied haha. look a few posts above.

crrrrrazzzzzzzzy... my bad

I'm in MIMG now and am just asking because at my UCI interview one of the other UCLA applicants was saying that being in MIMG was stupid because it was impossible to get a great GPA. I love MIMG and am doing fine in it; I was just curious as to if this "MIMG is hardest yadda yadda yadda" rumor has made its way over to the med school adcomm.

I'm pretty much on the border of being an acceptable candidate for UCLA so i'm hoping I will be looked at in the best light.

ALSO.... any idea if the med school shows favoritism to UCLA graduates?

A ucla med student told me 30% of their class were ucla grads. I'd say this counts as favoritism?

I sure hope they have favoritism...... unless ucla students are just 30% more awesome. Not sure how the pre-med scene is at the other state schools, maybe its not as intense; a more competitive environment breeds more competitive applicants.

I go to UCR, the scene is still competitive but nothing like UCLAs. Let me rise to the top quite easily though 😀

I went from a community college thinking I was the best pre-med applicant out there. The big Fish.

Once I got to UCLA... i realized I was just a piece of floating minnow poo.

But at least it caused me to over compensate so now I'm halfway a decent applicant.

I will name it "Big Fish in a Little Pond Syndrome."

so 2 more days? I am not sure if I believe it though. Has anyone asked lately?

yes. yes we are exactly 30% more awesome : )

ahaha fun fun. just confirmed who tkp is via facebook. would be fun to meet all of you at one point 😛

in regards to an earlier post regarding mimg, some of my friends who are now in wonderful schools were mimg. can definitely say it's a difficult major, but people do do well in them, granted with hard work and good study approaches

I think this major did a great job prepping me for med school.... I'm happy I took it, even if it did apparently require more work.

Have you guys seen the "asians in the library" video yet?

And for the Remix that was done by my friend

Granted she does speak the some truth.... she could have used some tact.... or did what the rest of white people do and keep it to themselves

My life is now complete that I've heard the remix, if only their was a video...

As a current MIMG major, let me say that it is not that difficult (IMO, a major is as difficult as one makes it to be), but it does involve a bit of work. I am very happy with my choice because the classes are interesting, the professors are knowledgeable and courteous, and more importantly, there are lots of great research opportunities.

Who is your favorite MIMG professor?

Dasgupta is a champ... but I had a lot of fun with Zack and Morrison of Immunology (like a bickering married couple!)

hoping for some awesome news for everyone. I interviewed Nov. 2, all this waiting has me so drained... hope this game ends for us soon!

But, if nobody hears back this week, at least we got st. patty's day to keep things fun :luck:

:luck:ACCEPT ME I'M IRISH:luck:

Hahaha this is awesome....I was UCLA MIMG as well. Not gonna lie, it's very challenging and a lot of work, but for me it was so interesting that my grades were better than lower div. Would also love to meet (or re-meet?) all you UCLA MIMG heads on this thread sometime haha!

As for favoritism, I don't think it's so much an adcom preference for UCLA students as it is the UCLA's love for David Geffen. I know plenty of UCLA undergrad students who would choose David Geffen hands-down over other top schools like Columbia, Duke etc. This is probably what contributes to the high UCLA representation.

HAHAHA I think Zack and Morrison win this contest. Second place goes to Benhur Lee, followed by Dasgupta.

Wow so many MIMG folk applying...where's the neurosci luv? 🙂

Getting super anxious to hear something...anything...the suspense in killing me here!

MIMG?
I am not sure on the preferential treatment at UCLA... I mean if you think about it statistically more people at UCLA would prefer UCLA. On top of that UC med schools like taking people from UCs, and UCLA has the most pre-meds (and some of the most competitive pre-meds for that matter) out of all the UCs. I'm sure if you looked at UCLA's UC acceptance breakdown it would go in an order one would expect from UC schools reputations.
Of course I am just assuming all this, but from my experience here at UCR it seems to be the case (also with the UCR/UCLA program here several premeds at my school don't even apply to UCLA direct, I don't really understand why..)

MIMG is shorthand for Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Genetics major.

I agree. Just for the record, Neurosci>>>>>MIMG 🙂

Agreed! Reppin' NEUROSCI <3

Both MIMG and Neurosci are incredibly intense majors at UCLA. Crazy competitive.

BTW...I can't believe this...

Okay, I was trying to stay away from this thread but when it comes to ranking MIMG professors, nobody takes the cake away from Dr. Benhur Lee. Picture a ridiculously buff Asian wearing D&G shoes and G-Star jeans lecturing you about the mechanism behind viral entry. Throw in his hand gestures, his random digressions about his personal life, and his awesome TAs, and you've got yourself quite the awesome professor.

It's too bad he only comes out of his lab once every two years to teach :-/.

Professor Dasgupta's probably the nicest, sweetest guy ever and I'd give him second place just for that. There's a rumor that he hasn't slept an hour since his wife became terminally ill :-(. How devoted is that?

I gave Benhur Lee the second prize, behind the Morrison-Zack duo. Their bits are very well rehearsed and sound a lot like Abbott and Costello.

hahahah would seem as though sdn has become a choice of procastination for some of us

lol in the great choice between studying for finals or procrastination with excuse (or so I've convinced myself), the latter definitely wins 🙂
