Hmm, do you mind if I ask when you received your invite? If they're already at the beginning of March and their interview season lasts til the end of March, it doesn't seem like there are many seats available. I'm one of those lucky few are who up for re-review in January, so hmm...

I got the invite on 12/14. I honestly have no insight into how their system works but if you're up for re-review then just keep your spirits up. 🙂

I was complete on 10/15 and haven't heard anything yet, and there is no hold shown on my application... Anyone in a similar situation and are my chances for an interview slim by now?

IS and complete in mid-November and haven't heard anything. The office reopened today...hopefully we hear good news this week! :xf:

Accepted today via e-mail!!!!!!!! 😀 Ahhh Sooo excited!! Interviewed 12/09

Waitlisted 🙁

This is my first post-interview decision so I'm super bummed... know chances are pretty poor at this point. I'm an OOS so I felt lucky even getting to the interview, especially considering that UCSD was my tied-for-first-choice-school. Bleh.

When I check my status online, I have an Application Received date of 7/31/10. But for everything else under it, I have "--". Does that mean I was rejected pre-secondary? Or is it normal to have the two hyphen lines?

I believe the hyphens are normal. I think you just haven't been selected for a secondary yet.

Sorry to hear that you were waitlisted 🙁

I'm OOS too. Would you mind letting me know your stats? Either publicly or by private message?

I withdrew from my interview in February - hopefully one of you still waiting for an interview can get invited!

What date in February? I am hoping to move up my interview. P.S. congrats on Hopkins acceptance

If you hear anything, let me know. Mine was complete on 10/18, and I've had yet to hear a word also.

just got an interview invite today!!! was complete 12/07

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned on the interview day, but does anyone remember how much movement out of the "acceptable pool" (waitlist) there is supposed to be? And or those people who have been waitlisted, does anyone remember what their policy is on update letters, etc.?

Thanks!

Can anyone speak to the chances of OOS applicants post-interview? I'm a fairly unspectacular OOS applicant that somehow landed a UCSD interview, so I'm trying to get a feel for what I'm up against.

According to the MSAR, last year about 10.5% of OOS interviewees matriculated to UCSD. Considering the fact that not everyone who's offered a spot will matriculate, I would wildly guess that about 20% or more of OOS interviewees get offers of admissions. That's not bad odds!

The matriculation rate at UCSD is lower for OOS's than IS's, but that doesn't necessarily mean the acceptance rate is any lower. OOS's have to consider higher tuition and potentially a farther move across the country. I know of one school (not in California) that gives preference to in-state students, but the way it works is that the preference occurs in who gets interviews. Once you get an interview at that school, it no longer matters which state you're from. I suspect that many schools work this way. Any school that has a numbered wait-list has to have some final ranking system, and it would be simplest just to rate everyone according to the same scale.

Cool, that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the reply!

Love doing this. Plus it's Sunday and I'm bored trying to avoid studying.

IS: 3425 applied, 580 interviewed, 266 were accepted, 113 enrolled
17% interview, 46% accepted, 42% enrolled

OOS: 1667 applied, 114 interviewed, 44 were accepted, 12 enrolled
7% interview, 39% accepted, 27% enroll

OOS definitely at a disadvantage. Though the largest hurdle seems to be the interview, not the acceptance. Only 12 OOS students in a 130 person class? I'm already missing the diversity just thinking about it.

Hey, 39% acceptance for OOS post-interview is actually really good. 🙂

Where are you getting those numbers? I have MSAR and the medschoolinusa site, but your numbers seem to be from elsewhere.

Oh, and thanks for the helpful response!

These are from USNews. These are the official numbers med schools provide that factor into their ranking among peers.

This is great news! At that rate, it's almost a coin flip once you have an interview. Flip the coin enough times and it's a safe bet you land on heads at least once 🙂 I'm so happy that I have an interview at UC San Diego!

It looks like you have to pay for access to these statistics... Probably a good thing I don't have them. It would just give me one more thing to obsess over!

Has anyone gotten an interview after being on hold for re-review in January?

Has anyone who interviewed on December 16th heard anything?

Why 2014 Class has 130 students, 2015 only has 86?

in the same boat... was complete 11/19 and no status updates yet. :/

me too... complete 11/14 (a little late, i know) and no update yet. I'm also OOS, so it's a little bit of a long shot.

I don't know much about the movement, and the way they pick people to get in the class is really a mystery to me. But I can speak to the update policy--I interviewed in November and I just sent an update letter via email last week because I'm on the waitlist. They welcome updates via email or snail mail. Good luck!

Your source was wrong. I worked alongside a PhD, who sits on the med/grad school admission panel. @UCSD, it's all #s. If you don't have close to a 4.0 or god MCAT scores, it's difficult to get in. Applications are screened by numbers-if not met they are "nexted." Like she said, "You wouldn't want a doctor who got a C in ochem." -_-

Thanks, SanDiegoChick! This is a big help.

Do you remember if they accept off the wait list continuously, or do they just wait until May (or almost May) to re-review the applicants? If they don't re-review until May, it seems like waiting to update them until then could be a good idea...

The director of admissions stated on my interview day and again on the phone to me multiple times that they do not consider any additional information on your application after you have gone in for an interview, so I'm not sure where you are getting this.

Rejected pre-interview this morning, complete in early October. Good luck!

Got rejected, pre-interview, complete mid-october. Also applied to prime. OOS

rejected this am, pre-interview. OOS. complete in mid November

they were pretty nice about it, and cited the following stats to date:
5,500 primaries ->
2,600 secondaries (completed) ->
520 interviews ->
125 spots (~44 apps per spot)

Good luck to all!

Same here, IS. CA is showing no love.

EDIT: No hold status or anything. Just had a secondary complete date for a LONG time, then got an email and status change today.

Sorry to hear about the rejections. Were you guys on hold before the rejection?

I was rejected pre-interview this morning as well. No hold status. I was complete in early November. IS non-trad. Bummer!

Come to think of it, I haven't gotten so much as a look in my direction from any CA schools. I'm a CA resident. I was rejected pre-secondary by three UC's and pre-interview by two. I know state schools are somewhat obligated to admit their residents, but then I also heard that CA doesn't really adhere to that so much. Does anyone know what's up with this, or is it that they are just really competitive?

Combination of both. UCSD, UCI, and UCD favor cali residents, but all in all they're still very selective because of the caliber of applications they receive. UCSF favors cali residents slightly, and UCLA specifically states that they don't have a preference for IS vs OOS.

UC Davis is unusually preferential for in-state applicants. Looking at their MSAR data for last year, they only enrolled 2 OOS students, and one of the two was MD/PhD, which usually are sort of exempted from the IS/OOS rules because the federal government often pays their tuition through grants.

So out of almost 1,000 OOS applicants, they only enrolled 1 student to the normal MD program.

And yet I still forked over some cash for both the secondary and primary... I must be out of my mind!

I was complete mid-October (also OOS) and got an interview invite last week or so.

Keep hope alive.

Has anyone on hold tried to send in an update lately? I remember there was a link for updates on the status page but now it's gone.

Rejected pre-interview yesterday... 4.0 cgpa, 35 MCAT, OOS... guess it just wasn't meant to be
