By the way, I just got my admission letter yesterday. I was early decision, so i was expecting to hear soon, but it looks like I'm the first SDN member of UIC College of Medicine class of 2015! So I've got that going for me, which is nice. Good luck to the rest of you.

So I just received this secondary and i have few questions....

1) Does the secondary not let you move onto the next tab unless you completed the tab before it? I wanted to jump around and complete the essays first but it won't let me 🙁

2) Does the information automatically save even if you log out-i don't see a saved button anywhere.

3) Can you go backwards in the tabs and re-do an application section, or once you complete it, its done?

4) Since I can't jump sections, anyone can post the secondary essays here?

thanks!

As I recall, you could bounce around, you just have to leave some pages blank. Once you've seen everything once, they let you pick from a list of pages like AMCAS. Every time you navigate from one page to another or log out it saves your info. Once it's done, it'll let you edit until you hit submit, then you're done, and (much like AMCAS) won't be able to touch it again. Also, the prompts are posted on the very first message of this thread, so you can work from those if you want.
that make sense?

Awesome! Congratulations!!

OMG!! I got an interview invite (yesterday) but checked status page today! Why don't they call or e-mail? Oh well, I don't care. I got an interview!! So...what do I do now? What's the difference between AM or PM interview times? 😍:soexcited:

Edit: to clarify, on the status page it said the invite status was made on 9/28, but I hadn't checked until today. I didn't get anything in snail mail.

👍👍Congrats! Mind sharing when you were complete?

They snail-mail. Of course, you'd find a few days sooner if you check your online status... ^_^

What's the difference between AM or PM interview times?

Both AM and PM interview groups have lunch together and go on the campus tour together. The AM kids interview in the morning (around 9-11), and the PM group interviews around 2-4. Some of the interview feedback on SDN said that one time was "better" than the other, but I think it really comes down to your preference. Do you want to get the interviews over with right away? Or do you want to see the school and get familiar with some of the people there before you jump into interviews?

Congrats, btw. 👍

Hmm...I called and was offer 9am or 11:30am. I chose 11:30am because I'm not a morning person and like my sleep, lol. I assumed it meant my interview would be around 11:30am, but from the info you provided am I correct in guessing that my interview will be after the lunch and tour?

Yep! I think they like you to be there around 11:30 for a 12 p.m. lunch with current med students, and a 1 p.m. tour. The interview part of the day is divided into 4 blocks, and you'll have interviews during 3 of those blocks and a "free" period during one. Each interview was about 30 minutes long, and there were 2 faculty/alumni interviewers and 1 student interviewer. (At least that's how it was at the Chicago campus on my day!)

Congraultions to everyone who has received an invite for an interview! Would you mind sharing what your MCAT scores and GPA are? Did you have all of your pre-requisites completed before applying? Thanks so much for any help that you could forward my way!

I have been an "applicant in process" for about 3 weeks now...should i be worried that they looked at my application already and decided to put me on hold?

I think the consensus is that going from applicant->back to application is like a "hold." However, that you are still applicant is good.

no just curious lol

is the date you were complete on the login website (is it the fee recieved date? or the one at the top?)

or did they send u a complete e-mail...?

After I sent in my secondary, few days later my status is " Applicant in process". I didn't see the word "complete" or "application in process", so I have been assuming that I am complete...but now I'm not so sure? anyone has any ideas?

Have any OOS applicants received interview invites? How long after you were complete did you receive it?

Any info will help. Thanks!

You should be fine. On the first page of info you see after logging in to the status check it has a bunch of info about your app, like when letters of rec were received, when you paid the app fee, etc... if they all have a date or a Y (for yes) then you should be good to go. Plus, pretty sure you wouldn't get applicant in process if you weren't complete 🙂

I'm OOS. I was complete early July... and received my invite mid Sept.

Bulldog, if you don't mind sharing, what are your stats? Do you have any ties to Illinois?

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone knows how difficult is it to establish Illinois residency? What if my parents live there (have lived there for two years) but I myself never physically lived there? I was a dependent on them until this current year.

Also, if one goes there as an OOS student, can he/she establish Illinois residency after one year?

Hi Tippyboat,

I'm an OOS M1 at UIC currently trying to establish residency. I met with the residency officer during orientation and it sounds like you are in good shape to petition for Illinois residency if your parents are currently residents of IL. From my conversation with the RO, it sounds like whether you are dependent on or independent from your parents should not have an impact on your ability to obtain residency through them. He said that as long as they are residents (pay IL income taxes, registered to vote in IL, etc.) then you would be considered a resident.

If you wanted to obtain residency on your own, it would require you to work and achieve a certain level of income for the year prior to when you want to become a resident (I think it was >$12,000, but I don't remember the exact number anymore). However, I think it would be hard to put enough time into working that many hours to meet the income requirement and have time to study.

Here is the link that UIC has for residency requirements for more information: http://www.usp.uillinois.edu/residency.cfm

It has a lot of legal jargon so I would recommend contacting the office directly to speak with a residency officer directly. From my brief conversation with him, I got a lot of helpful information and they sound like they are very open to helping students obtain residency. Hope this helps and good luck!

Hey guys!

I interviewed at Peoria yesterday, and it was actually super chill. I had one student interviewer and another with a panel of two doctors, one retired and one faculty. It was closed file, so all they had was my personal statement and my secondary essays. The questions were pretty standard: why medicine, greatest strength/weakness, tell me about a time you failed, what do you think about healthcare reform->they asked me what the problem with healthcare was(pre-existing conditions, cost per service, etc), how do you see yourself practicing in 10 years, etc. Overall, it was a really good first interview experience. The facilities were a little meh, but the Peoria campus definitely made their case about coming there. They really tried to make the whole thing as low stress as possible, which I really appreciated.

I hope this helps, at least a little!!!

Wow thank you so much!
That's definitely good news - I think I have spoken to a residency officer at UIC before and he wasn't very sure what was going on haha.

From what you wrote, did you mean that I might be able to establish residency through my parents for M1 year? I would not move to Illinois until M1 starts, and I am independent (working full time in another state) from June 2010- June 2011, which means for the taxes in April 2011, I would be independent.

I will definitely contact the office again but I was just wondering if you knew anything else about the requirements for establishing residency through parents. In the helpful link you posted, it sounded like I had to be dependent on my parents the entire time in order to establish residency.

How do they go about interviews and acceptances? Website, Email, or snail mail? I know some are still using snail mail for certain things.

We learned today that they're trying to upgrade their IT system there...but it's a difficult process. (with my grammar nazi-ness, I totally just taught the reader of that sentence how to correctly use their/there/they're).

ANYWAY, to answer your question, interview invitations are being sent out via the status page website (check the thread for a description of "applicant/application in progress") and acceptances will be via snail-mail as of now.

Hey, I didn't know you were interviewing on Monday! I'm an 11am though 🙁
Didn't see this till now. Who were you? We probably saw each other during lunch and the Dean's welcome thing. PM me if you want.

I had a wonderful interview day at UIC. The interviews were pretty low-stress for the most part. The sense I got was that they only had your essays in front of them, but I could be wrong. Anyways, I loved it there and am hoping for some in-state lovin' in a few weeks! 😀

Unfortunately, it sounded like we have to wait til the end of October...and "call if we don't hear anything by mid-November"...*sigh*. I was hoping to hear mid October, but still earlier than Einstein's Jan 15 release date haha. Anyway, I was told by two of my interviewers that they only have my essays to look at...so you're definitely right! 🙂

I was pretty sure that the residency officer told me that you could get residency as long as your parents were Illinois residents, but it may be a matter of the language in the by-laws and tax laws that influences whether or not you can get residency for M1 year. I worked in another state last year and was not claimed as a dependent by my parents but I was given the impression that it should not be an issue if my parents were Illinois residents. (I think the big thing is that they want to know you or your parents are paying tax to the state, honestly.)

But of course, I would double check with the residency office just to make sure!

Was anyone able to get student hosting? Do they even have it?

Was anyone able to get student hosting? Do they even have it?

I don't know if it's availalbe or not, since it was not offered to me. I did find in the packet they handed out yesterday a flier advertising their student housing and how you can "stay in their housing as a guest" for 30 dollars a day or something. Call the Admissions Office to inquire about any sort of housing would be my suggestion.

If you haven't been to Chicago before, I'd suggest getting a hotel and just seeing the city for a few days. That's what I've been doing. Been here since Saturday.

does anyone know if lor's must be sent with the primary application?
or do i submit them once i receive a secondary?
also is it too late to apply? are they a rolling admission?
thanks!!

you need LOR's to be in by the secondary; kinda late; i'm pretty sure its rolling

I've been applicant in process for almost 2 weeks now.. is there an average time that someone is applicant in process before they get an interview?

From seeing how long ppl have been applicant in process on this thread there doesn't seem to be an average time spent with that status. Some have had it for a couple months while others just a couple weeks before interview invite. I personally was applicant in process for just a little over 2 weeks before the invite status popped up. I think anyone who reverts back to "application is in progress" has been put on hold or passed over, But as long as you're app in process, they are actively reviewing you and it's a good thing 🙂

So has U of I sent any rejection letters yet? Seems like a lot of applicants in progress, and some interviews. Should I feel lucky that I'm just an applicant in progress? Or have they not yet started the rejections?

Pretty awesome interview day. I felt a little like a leper being the only oos there and from California. "You really want to leave California?" "you do know it gets cold here right?"

To clear up the California misconceptions, the entire state is not a beach. It does get pretty cold in some places, not chicago cold I know, but still cold. Again it is not 80 year round, unless maybe in San Diego.

But really, great schools and the rest of the iterviewees were really cool. Good luck everyone.

I also enjoyed my interview at UIC. I think my interviewers really sold me the school -- mainly because they were all pretty awesome. The school is alittle outdated stylewise and technology-wise (I'm mainly thinking of the anatomy lab TVs and the awkward looking student lounge area), but I can get over that with an In-state price tag.

I'm hoping for good news late October/early November. The first committee meeting will be around that date.

Hello,

I have never lived in Chicago, and I've been very curious about the neighborhood of UIC and seem to only find conflicting information about it. Some people insist it's dangerous, others say it's fun and awesome.
Can somebody who has had personal experiences there give us a comprehensive account of what kind of area it is? Safety is a big issue for me (and my family), so I would really appreciate some information. Also, does the school provide safety mechanisms like having transportation for students at night?

The area immediately around UIC isn't bad. I currently attend the east campus which is 5 blocks from west campus or the medical campus. If you are on Taylor street you are pretty safe there are cops there 24/7 and its a popular area, with bars and tons of restaurants there. The only down fall is that if you head too far from campus(10 blocks or so) you do end up in a less safe area. Its a predominantly hispanic/ african american community but there are always muggings or crime alerts sent out by UIC about that area. So I would say if you are bringing a family with kids, I wouldn't live down there. But that is just my personal opinion. There is always the option of commuting like i do now, roughly an hour ride in from the burbs, but doing that in med school would probably be difficult
