Application in Process for a month. This is normal, right? *it's only October...it's only October...* :scared:

Hmm I never received this email. But it says applicant in process. Should I be worried? Thanks

Applicant in process seems to mean "your file is under review" as opposed to application in process which seems to mean "we have your file".

This is my first time too, but this is what I discern from the threads.

hmm hopefully thats the case thanks by any chance remember if we had to turn in fee waiver documentation or was it automatic

I've been complete since late July and my status just changed to "Applicant in Process" two days ago if that allays anybody's worry.

Long time reader of this thread, first time poster.

I'm also in the same situation. Complete with LORs downloaded on 07/31/2010...applicant in Process in mid-August and have been since then.

Hello,

I have never lived in Chicago, and I've been very curious about the neighborhood of UIC and seem to only find conflicting information about it. Some people insist it's dangerous, others say it's fun and awesome.
Can somebody who has had personal experiences there give us a comprehensive account of what kind of area it is? Safety is a big issue for me (and my family), so I would really appreciate some information. Also, does the school provide safety mechanisms like having transportation for students at night?

Hey guys I'm currently an M1 at the Chicago campus...

Chicago in general is very patchy. Some areas will have 800k condos/townhomes and still be within a few blocks of less desirable areas or section 8. When I was looking for housing safety and convenience to campus were my major priorities. Ultimately I opted to stay just south of downtown (south loop) which is ~8-10 minute drive to campus sans traffic. If I choose to take the train it's about a 20 minute commute. There is also a bus that runs from the south loop to school.

The area around the school isn't bad at all and I have many friends that live within walking distance. Originally I was going to stay closer to school in the Tri-taylor area. Many students live in Tri-taylor/Little Italy/Ukrainian Village. Depending on what you're looking for it can be affordable to kind of pricey if you want something nicer (keeping the student budget in mind). There are some newer developments, but the majority of things closer to campus are refurbished (and still really nice). Many students get really nice places with roommates for a great deal. If you do opt for an older or refurbished place I would definitely suggest requesting a copy of previous heating bills. I've heard some horror stories about gas bills during the winter due to inefficient windows and old heating systems.

For people who live close to campus around Tri-Taylor/within a certain radius the school has a red car service that will pick you up and take you home late at night. I've been at school and traveled home around the clock and have never felt unsafe...however things do happen and I wouldn't suggest walking 8 blocks home alone at 4am. If I know I'm going to be coming home late I usually drive to school.

The south and west loop have lots of newer condo high rises and some rental buildings (there are more rental places in the west loop than in the south loop imo). These kinds of buildings are generally more expensive on the surface, but if you don't have a car might not be a bad deal. I have basic cable (which I never use), gas, heat, water, parking (usually an additional outrageous charge ranging from 100-200 depending on the building. Permit street parking is usually available as well) and trash included in my rent. The only thing I have to pay separate is electric. Places around campus don't usually have much if anything included with the rent.

Other individuals live a little further North in areas such as Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, Wrigleyville, Lakeview. It's a bit longer commute, but I like to think of train rides as forced study opportunities. I don't know much about these areas when it comes to living, but I really like the Northside and study a lot there.

Ultimately, I chose to stay in south loop due to proximity to my daughter's school, family, safety (nice area and high rise building preference...more secure imo), and fairly easy commute to school. It's close enough to school and just far enough so that I don't feel like I'm living at school (although I did before I discovered 24 hour starbucks). 🙄 I haven't figured out how to consistently work in exercising into my schedule yet so I usually walk to the L and/or bus after I take my daughter to school. 🙂

There are 2 lines close to campus...the pink line is 2 blocks from the main building where classes are held. The blue line also has a UIC Medical Center stop as well.

To whoever asked about taking a cab...Definitely don't try to cab it after your interview if you're trying to catch a tight flight! Construction/traffic can be horrendous and the train is usually the quickest option especially if you're going to be doing an afternoon interview. You can catch the blue line straight from campus which goes directly to Ohare (no transfers). Otherwise, you can catch the pink line to orange, which will take you to Midway.

Good luck to everyone still interviewing and waiting to hear back! Decision pending post interview is normal. When your status changes to "A final decision made on..." then that is generally good news. Last year lots of people were stuck in "Decision Pending" limbo for awhile. I don't remember seeing any final decisions with negative news this early in the cycle. *It's still early guys!*:xf:

I just got an email from Urbana telling me to consider the Medical Scholars Program because of my "fine performance on the MCAT." I only got a 31....

Don't worry, that was automatically emailed to all the people who applied to this school regardless of their stats.

31 is good...enough, hopefully 😎

So, worked up the courage to call UIC and ask for an estimate of when decisions would be sent out. The guy on the phone was very nice (especially great given the high volume of neurotic applicants he probably talks to) and told me I shouldn't expect to hear back until late October/early November. I interviewed in early September, FWIW. Good luck to Kaushik, Asyouwereatrio, and everyone else here! 👍

Thanks a lot! Same to you!! I was told during my early October interview that we'll hear back by the end of the month/early november as well, after our files go to the committee at the end of Oct.

Omg. Thank you so much for calling. I interviewed here in early Sept. as well and have subsequently freaked out every time I've checked my status and its says "Decision Pending." I'm relieved to know that they aren't rejecting me, they are just taking their sweet time!

Good luck everyone! Hopefully we'll hear good news soon! 😳

Thanks a lot bud! Good luck to you as well!

To confirm what you and Asyou have said, I was told at my interview day (same day as Asyou) that we should hear back at the end of October. At the latest, we should hear back beginning of November and if we don't hear anything back by the middle of November, we were told to call them!

w00t! "Application is in Process!" That's good right? Right? ...Right?

I believe someone said that the committee meets every third Thursday of the month? Does this mean they are supposed to meet tomorrow?

Hi guys!
I just checked my status and the interview slots page popped out! Sooooo excited! Now since I can't pick a date on the webpage. I assume I will have to call them tomorrow during business hours. Do they accept interview scheduling phone calls on all weekdays?

Thanks!

Yes, you call them up to schedule the interview. As far as I know, they accept phone calls on all weekdays.

Thank you, Kaushik! I will call first thing in the morning! UIC is my number 1 choice! I hope they accept me! 😀

Hey guys. I'm an M2 who is in the UPR track, and am at Rockford right now. If any of you guys want advice, feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to help (about Rockford, Urbana, UIC, or applications in general).

Also, I noticed that some of you guys were circulating the "algorithm" of the process below... and I notice that my original "disclaimer" has been modified to something a little more optimistic. I'm actually surprised how intact everything else has been kept. But just to let you guys know, the data below isn't from some "UIC manual". It was compiled from observations I made using various posts from the 2007, 2008, and 2009 (my own application year) threads (has no observations from the 2010 year... since I was mostly busy with M1). I heard that the computer system changed last year... and although I'm sure it's still plenty valid, don't use this blindly as a bible. I know it'd be a terrible feeling if one "good" status message suddenly meant something "bad". Or put another way, only celebrate when the fat packet is in your hand! 🙂

Anyways, good luck to you guys!

Hi everyone! I decided to post this time line (posted on past years' threads) that was of great service to me this past cycle. I hope that it finds you well. 🙂

START

I. Submit Primary.

II. Wait for the email from UIC giving you your login information for the Applicant Status Check site (usually arrives within 2 weeks of submitting your primary): https://mercury.comd.uic.edu/appstat

III. Login, and check your status in the second page.

---

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Process" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, 3 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.
D. "Select Interview Date" (A grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
1. Before May. --> Goto M.
2. On or After May. --> Goto N.
M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
2. "Decision Pending" (No Status Change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" Email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.
N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.
S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
1. There is an "Additional Correspondences" Tab in the upper-right corner on your status page AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
2. There is no "Additional Correspondences" Tab and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the tab nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.
X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection 🙁 ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. :xf: ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondences" Tab + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance 😀 ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

FINISH

*** PLEASE BEAR IN MIND that this info came from last year's thread! Therefore, the whole process may have changed since then, and there is no guarantee to this information. But it worked for me (even though I was given the same warning) and the time line was accurate.

Good look to all of you class of 2015 applicants!! 😀

according to this thing, we're fine for now with decision pending...:luck:

Thank you, Kaushik! I will call first thing in the morning! UIC is my number 1 choice! I hope they accept me! 😀

Congrats! Were you "applicant in process" before the invite? I am still application in process since 8/24.

Two part question for all you med students or premed-postinterviews...What is the interview day like down at the Urbana campus, and how do they decide who gets to go to which campus?

so I looked at last year's thread and it looks like the adcom did meet on the third thursday of October (which would be today) and that day or the next if people's status changed to "a final decision has been made" they received an acceptance packet in the mail about a week later...

Congrats! Were you "applicant in process" before the invite? I am still application in process since 8/24.

startswithb, yes I was applicant/application in process since... Aug. Hang in there, I'm sure one day you'll go check your status and the interview slots screen will pop up!

I just called and scheduled an interview at Peoria on Dec 10 (PM)! Anyone else going on that day?

Super Excited! 😀

INTERVIEW INVITE!!! I became "applicant in process" sometime mid September. Heading to Rockford 12/8. Yahoo!

I have been stuck on "application in progress" since August.. is this normal?

Good luck to all, I just withdrew my application today and canceled my interview. My brother loved UIC so much so good luck to everyone! Just wish it wasn't so expensive for out of state or I would love to go here!

2009-2010 cycle the first person to post a "A final decision has been made" was around 1pm on the 3rd Thursday of October.

2008-2009 cycle the first person to post a "A final decision has been made" was around 5pm on the 4th Thursday of October.

Hopefully it will be soon, because my heart skips a beat every time this thread is bumped. 👍

Congrats to all those who just got invites today! I am assuming that this round of invites for interviews should come out either tomorrow or monday according to some of the post about the committee meeting today (3rd thursday of the month)?

In either case, guess of your status remains in "applicant in process," it isn't the worst thing that can happen.

Good luck to everyone!

So did anyone's status change? Mine is still Decision Pending. Guess I have not been accepted

Lol, I forgot that I interviewed on 10/14.

Um...I can't tell if you're serious or not...

Just in case you're actually serious...relax! We don't even know if the adcoms met or not. For all we know, they're not going to meet till next week.

Asyouwereatrio and myself interviewed on Oct. 4th and were told not to expect to hear back until the end of October/early November. So relax and be patient for a little while longer (believe me, I know that's hard to do right now when it seems like every other applicant on SDN is getting acceptances).

Good luck to all of us! :xf::luck:

Thanks for elaborating further dude...I would say this, only freak out if those on your interview date had received "status changes" and you did not....and even then, don't freak out. Haha...just relax..you can't do anything to change your admissions decision now. I don't think the committee will meet until next week (since that is the "end of the month")...we'll probably hear back sometime late next week, early November...and that's only for those that interviewed before our interview date. Those with later interview dates MAY have to wait longer.

Good luck! 🙂

Hey folks,

I interviewed on Oct 4 as well. I have several friends at UIC med school and from what they tell me, the ADCOM meets on the third Thursday of each month...year after year. Yesterday was the 3rd Thursday.

Secondly, (again off of my friends' info), your status is rarely changed on the day the committee meets. At the earliest, it changes to "a final decision has been made" either the Friday or Saturday after the meeting.

If your status still has not changed, you usually get an e-mail saying your application is on hold until the next month's meeting (NOT A WAITLIST).

Hope this helps and good luck!

So many Oct. 4ers in this thread. I also interviewed on Oct. 4, and I have sworn to myself to stay away from the status page until one of you fine people posts a change. I'm too obsessive with the status checks

Hi fellow interviewees! Good luck to all of you! 😀

This thread was all the way in the 3rd page! Unacceptable! 😡

I'm excited about potentially hearing back sometime during the next 1-1.5 weeks! The interview day at UIC was pretty awesome and the students who gave the campus tour were really fun to talk to. The anatomy lab was pretty cool to see. It was the first time I ever stepped foot in an anatomy lab, so it was pretty cool to see the set-up and all the CT/MRI images lining the wall, etc! 🙂

Edit: TOP!

Edit 2: Sorry if I got someone's heart racing about potential status changes! Not my intention!
