So, two questions.

Anyone from OOS, where did you stay? I'm eyeing the Gateway Hostel near Lincoln Park area. Cheap and I really only need it for a night or two. I'm driving in so as long as I can get to campus by car relatively easly, I'm good. On that note too, what's parking like on campus?

THe second question is somewhat unrelated.
Did anyone apply to the Urbana MSP program? I was talking to them fairly frequenlty back in like Jan and they said they were just waiting on news from the Grad school before sending out interview invites (and I would therefore cancel my med school interview since they're one in the same). Not a peep since.....

I'm hoping this is a typo, but is it really 68K a year for OOS students??

That is unreal...68K x 4 = yikes

This has to be one of the most expensive med schools?

Yeah, unfortunately it's not a typo. They spell out the yearly cost of attendance in the financial aid manual they give you during the interview, and with OOS tuition and everything else, I think the overall CoA was ~$92K per year, with it being more for M2-M3 because of summer classes as well.

Also, coming from a similarly financially strapped state where public school tuition went up like 32% in a year, I'd venture to say the costs might go even higher in the next few years 🙁

Well that's puts UIC out of the running...that is a ridiculous amount of debt! No wonder they accept so many out of state!

At my interview one of the current med students told another out of stater...don't go here! It's not worth the debt!

As an IS person I am also slightly worried about possible tuition increases. The budget situation doesn't appear to be as bad this year as it was last, based on the emails we've gotten from administration, but most schools seem to just raise yearly regardless.

Do people not look at these factors when they apply to schools??? 😕

I think comparing tuitions between schools is a, so to speak, "rich man problem." If you have the luxury of being admitted to multiple schools, you can weigh various things, among them the cost of attendance, in deciding where you want to go. When you apply, on the other hand, you want to maximize your chances of getting in to at least one school and therefore apply as broadly as possible. While the tuition is offputting, UIC has a great program and if this is the only school I were admitted to, I would definitely take the acceptance than withdraw and reapply.

If I remember correctly, 20% of UIC's class (I don't know if its just at Chicago, or across all campuses) is OOS ... so, for whatever reason, there are quite a few people who do accept from OOS

I mean of course people do, but it's not something I really took into consideration until after being accepted to more than 1 school.

Someone posted earlier that 25 of the OOS minority students get in-state tuition. The rest of the OOS students probably did not get accepted anywhere else and just pay the ridiculous OOS tuition.

Has anyone received financial aid award letters (loans/cost of attendances/grants/scholarships) for the upcoming year?
My award letter was available thru the student portal today. There was a related letter about a scholarship I applied for in snail mail today too 🙂

Aww...congrats! I don't know how to access the portal, as I wasn't given any of this info yet.

Congrats on the scholarship! Is there a nice website that shows what kind of scholarships are offered at UIC (or more generally)? I looked through the UIC COM's financial aid website and the only scholarship that I could potentially apply for is the general assembly one (I'm not eligible for the other ones that are listed on the website and am not interested in the military/primary care stuff).

Trio, you can get to the portal here: https://my.uic.edu/common/

You need to get your UIN and NetID to look at the finaid stuff (and you can do both via the portal site I believe...it was easier for me to get through that stuff because I already have a UIN and NetID from undergrad, so I don't know for sure if you can get this stuff using just your SSN).

Thanks but I need a UIN in order to even activate access to the portal 🙁

Hmm that's weird my scholarship wasn't posted yet. All loans from what I saw.
But the financial aid officer I spoke to said that in the next 2-3 weeks they will get revised again.

Now what is this about minority students getting an instate tuition waiver- do all of them get it or what do they have to do to qualify?

Thanks all

If you received your site assignment letter, you should be able to call and ask for your UIN. I just logged into the portal for the first time yesterday, setup my email, etc.

Since ill be at uiuc, I called and asked the student services people there. The number they gave me didn't work the 1st time I tried it but after I got my site assignment letter it now works. Kaushik is or was a UIllinois student so maybe he is still using the same ID.or knows more about it. Strangely I think all med students no matter what campus get a netid that is @uic.edu but anyway try giving them a call and you might be able to get your #.

I just searched for the General Assembly scholarship and found an active bill seeking to eliminate it...🙄

anyone know if the adcom is/has/going to meet today? doesnt seem like they are based on last years thread but just holding out hope that they are!

Yeah I'm pretty bummed about it. I contacted my district's rep awhile ago and was informed that they are no longer giving them out due to budgetary crisis. Yikes. I've heard that this may change (reinstated in the future) and that you can actually apply for it while in medical school. Oh well. I've got my fingers crossed for you btw!! :xf:

Thanks so much for that link!

Edit: Just got everything set up....it hurts to look at the Cost of Attendance on my award letter as an OOS. If only I were eligible for some sort of scholarship to knock these numbers down...*hope is futile* haha.

so there's no guarantee that the tuition is set in stone for the next four years? with the budget crisis as it is, does that mean the COA which is over 400,000 at this point could potentially rise?

i just wanted to get a general sense of the magnitude, as an OOS. applicants/students mention all the time that the debt will be paid off, and i believe it will, but i haven't seen the debt being paid off in a "timely" fashion. it makes me anxious and worried.

is it possible to work in the state of illinois to gain state residency and defer admission for a year?

Yes, it's totally possible/HIGHLY likely we'll continue to see increases in all public schools' tuition rates.

I honestly would said the average medical school debt, on the order of 200K-300K, is a lot easier to pay off than the 400+ that UIC estimates for us..so honestly, we have the right to be anxious/worried about our debt load. That being said, it is what it is--people do it, and with good fiscal management, you'll pay it off at some point. It may be a burden, but people survive on less than half of our salaries, right? This debt load means we just have to curb our lifestyles down a bit.

Also, with regards to working, I think you can if you have a non-university related job--I think that's been discussed earlier in this thread. However, it's not an easy process to gain residency in the state of Illinois (from hearsay)

This is absolutely right. There was a discussion about this earlier on this forum. While you may pay $100,000 more to go to UIC than the cheapest medical school, delaying matriculation solely because of cost is foolish. If you choose not to go to UIC in lieu of another school, that's one thing... but to not matriculate to UIC because of cost and to take a year off.. that's just dumb. You miss out an a whole year of salary, which is easily well over $100,000.

Just so it remains known, the comfortable majority of people who get interviews at UIC will be accepted. Keep that in mind. It's somewhere around 60-70%.

Does anyone know how the appeal processes works in case one wants to try to change their assigned campus? During the interview processes we were told that such appeals would only be processed after May 15 (if I recall correctly). Yet I wonder when and how we can file a petition to change our assignment . . .

Were you assigned to Urbana, but put Chicago as your #1?

Did any one get any kind of change on their status page today? Also, if you send them an update letter via email...do they send you a response? I sent one a couple weeks ago and want to make sure they got it.

I really really really want to go here and I haven't heard anything yet. Does that mean this is it?

I didnt have a status change today but I heard that the AdCom might not have met this week due to matches coming out. Im hoping that they didnt meet so we only have to wait till next thursday rather than another 4 weeks.

I'm going to be really heartbroken if I can't make that 60-70%. I interviewed back in November and am still sitting at decision pending...so frustrating!

Just in case I wanted to forget about my interview day and try to calmly wait...I can't! Two out of three of my interviewers were just on my local news and I saw one of them out tonight at a bar! So random.

I haven't been on these boards too much, but my impression from reading some other posts was that it wouldn't update until tomorrow anyway. So maybe tomorrow, maybe next week, maybe next month...comforting isn't it?

Got fin. aid statement today.

Good news: I was eligible for all loans to cover CoA
Bad news: I was eligible for all loans to cover CoA

😱

There's also the fact that the man's practically a living fossil... like in his 70's. Chicago's winters are brutal. Why not move to the Caribbean?

Probably had something to do with the fact that today was Match Day...

haha same here
I was told that they are going to make scholarship/grant revisions really soon (1 month or so) I don't know why some people already have it reflected in their award letters and some don't.

I was wondering if they postponed adcom meeting last year, so I looked over last years posts and sure enough they did.

"Interviewed on Tuesday and during the talk with the Dean he said they were meeting next week. Which I thought was weird since I read on here they meet every 3rd Thursday? Who knows"

"I interviewed at Rockford in Jan, but I spoke with an admissions guys earlier this week and he said because of Match day, the adcom will meet on the 25th. Hope that helps!! "

"I can tell you for sure that the adcom meeting was today. I just interviewed at the UIC this Monday and they said that due to match day they'd be meeting on March 25th..."

Then people reported having their status updated as early as March 25th last year. So adcom should be on the 24th this year.

Hey everyone, I've just joined this thread cuz I just got an interview invite today 😀... do you guys know what time the tour ends on interview day? I plan on flying back home out of O'hare and don't want to book a flight that I could in any way miss.

Also, how were the interviews? Overall relaxed and nice or scary and freaky? Any words of advice?

So the committee meeting is probably tomorrow. They are definitely not on spring break as they are doing admissions interviews today. I am already nervously sweating in anticipation. O.M.G. :scared:

So I wait...very impatiently. I am afraid to even dream about the idea of getting in because I am worried I will jinx it.

**Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I was not able to complete most of my applications until October-November. So...getting in here would be a miracle! Can future doctors believe in miracles??!😕
