You and me both. I believe that everyone who is deferred gets the "highly desirable" message, but I could be wrong. Good luck!

yup, same here 😉

Edit: Posted on the twitter a few hours ago:
"In case you are wondering--not all deferred candidates are rated "highly desireable"-more details with data points coming in a week!"

Anybody else receive this email from Dr. Ruiz regarding 2nd look?

"As one of our top candidates I am personally inviting you to return to Ann Arbor to learn more about our community and how we can help you achieve your personal and professional goals."

I'm really really hoping for some scholarship help from Michigan... wondering if this really means I'm a "top candidate" or if this went out to all admitted students...

I did not get this e-mail, and I've been accepted, so that seems like very good news for you!!! 👍 If you don't mind sharing, what are your stats like? And have you been accepted to a number of other schools as well? I'm just curious if Michigan tends to base their scholarship money off of stats, or other competitive acceptances, or both....If you don't want to post it publicly, would you PM me? Thanks!

Hey Cpck,

I do have a number of other acceptances (including some competitive schools like Hopkins), but my mcat stats are just average (32). I'm a non-traditional candidate whose strengths I think are more in experiences.

Keeping fingers crossed for monetary help... that would definitely cement my decision to go to Michigan!!!

Thanks for the reply! Well, that seems to definitely be a good sign, so I sincerely wish you the best of luck!! Perhaps because he is sending them out "individually," others might get some later on. I hope I'm one of them, because I'm in the same boat. I would love to go to Michigan, but w/out some help, I just couldn't foot the bill. I guess we'll see! Michigan has been great about everything in their process thus far, so I have no reason to expect it to be any different from this point on. Good luck!!

At the interview day I attended, Ruiz explicitly stated that scholarships are not given based solely on stats. They're given based on "fit" and/or "desirability," whatever those things mean.

I got this email about second-look weekend last night as well. I do have multiple acceptances, but somehow I don't think that's the reason these were given out.....the schools can't see your other acceptances until March (please correct me if I'm wrong). It might be because of "fit" and geographic location as well (in state versus out of state). I highly doubt this indicates anything about scholarship decisions.

At one of my interviews (and I don't remember where) the admissions director mentioned that as soon as a school accepts you, they can see any other schools that have accepted you. So it can't affect their decision to ACCEPT you, but it can affect their decisions thereafter. I'm not too worried about it. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to go anyways, it would just feel like a nice "pat on the back," and maybe a little assurance to receive the e-mail. You shouldn't sell yourself short though, I think that's a great sign, regardless of who they chose to send it to, it can only definitely be a good thing! 🙂

Yeah I heard the same thing on one of my interview days as well... congrats to those getting the personal emails!

I got the same e-mail too. I thought they just sent it to everyone admitted but I guess not. I'm OOS, non-trad as well.

Wow.....I can see my scholarship money hopes fluttering away.....🙁 Congrats to all of you guys though! That is exciting!! 👍

i took pretty thorough notes during the interview day at michigan so i am fairly certain that a school cannot see where else you have been accepted until 1) they accept you, and 2) it is after March 15. also, on the brochure Michigan gave out during the interview, scholarship allocations happen on March 25. so that would give one time to decide whether or not to attend second look after hearing if one received anything. i'll probably be in that boat because i didn't get a personalized email. congrats to all who did though!

This is straight from the AMCAS Instructions Book:

The AAMC shares acceptance information across schools in order to assist medical schools adhere to AAMC recommendations. These data are shared as follows:
a) Beginning in February of each year, a medical school that has accepted an applicant can view the other school or schools that have accepted the applicant, if applicable.
b) Beginning in April of each year, a medical school can view the school or schools that have accepted an applicant, even if that applicant has not yet been accepted by the medical school.

if we don't get that email, can we not go to second look..?

Is anyone else's file still not officially closed? I was not invited to interview, but not formally rejected either. My status says final decisions will be made in the first week of February, but I have not heard anything yet. I think they are done interviewing for the class of 2011. 😕

Dear U of M Admissions Twitter Folks,

The fact that you read SDN and chime in with tweets that answer questions and debunk myths brought up on this threads is fabulous.

All us nervous applicant types appreciate it!

Rock on.

They FINALLY closed my file today- kind of annoying since I knew the jig was already up the first week of February. I didn't really like the fact that I found out my final decision based on twitter/admissions tracker before my own application status page. They were super quick to hand out all of their interviews but super slow to give out the last 10 and close the last files: an agonizing wait with little hope. Oh well, home school, Ann Arbor is pretty grey this time of year anyways. 😎

super excited that second look details came out today!

only bummer-- this schedule is not very conducive to anyone coming from the pacific time zone. the day of shuttles are 8AM - 1PM. i haven't found any direct flights to detroit for a flight that would arrive by 1 PM given the 3-hr time change, and a red eye will pretty much mean i'll be too exhausted to do much of anything that day. if you're coming from the west, are you guys flying in on the 14th? it'd be nice to have shuttles and hosts for then too.

so are deferred until february students the only ones remaining?

Unfortunately, I believe that the folks who interviewed Feb. 4 are still waiting for decisions... which means there are a whole lot of us hoping to snag those remaining 3% of admissions offers. The way I figure, that's about 10 slots still open for the 40-something people who interviewed on Feb. 4, plus those of us who got deferred. Those odds aren't looking so hot for me... but on some level I'm just glad I've hung on for so long.

Try a one-stop flight through Chicago. I only flew in once but it was pretty difficult to find flights.

New question to ask along the interview trail: How will Watson be integrated into the medical school's curriculum?

Is there a reason that they are deciding on us Deferred Candidates at today's AEC meeting.... but we don't find out what decision that is until next week?

What is leg?

Watson will make House look like a DO 🙄

Did any of you guys interview on 2/4? I checked my status page just a little while ago and it is already updated... "Highly Desirable- February Decision." I'm disappointed because I LOVED UM, but I guess I'm still hopeful. Not sure I even know what this status means though. Good luck to the rest of you! Hopefully some people will get the email tonight!

According to what they just posted on their twitter, they are not reviewing the deferred candidates til next week- just the 2/4 folks today. By the way, I also love the fact that the admissions team reads this forum and tweets about it!
To the above person who got the "highly desirable" message- I'm guessing that means you are deferred and will get your decision next week?

Interviewed 2/4. Got the acceptance video yesterday afternoon. SO EXCITED!!!!

There was an earlier tweet that mentioned a difference between highly desirable deferred candidates and strictly deferred candidates. Did they ever elaborate on the breakdown of how many people sit in each pile?

Also, does anyone know if deferred candidates who are accepted will have an opportunity to attend second look?

I could definitely be wrong but I believe that they plan to update us on the number and type of deferred students early next week and that currently deferred students will be invited to second look but some events may have already filled up. Hopefully we should have a lot more info on Monday! Good luck!

I participated in this past weeks online "chat" and was told that they are meeting to discuss the deferred candidates this coming monday. I may be mistaken though as it is a holiday. So Maybe next next monday?

Monday could be true. I'm more interested in why you put chat in quotations. Was the validity of the "chat" being a chat questionable?

haha good point. It was just a chat I guess. The section I used was more of a Q&A format though. The chat section seemed to be focusing on the weather and sports.

Second-look overlaps with the spring football game. 🙁 It would've been awesome if that were part of the itinerary...

if i recall correctly, there were three events with limited space --two were workshops, such as suturing and i think the third was some kind of seminar. so i don't think you're missing too much crucial stuff by signing up later. we'll all learn this in actual school anyway.

Latest from UMichMedAdmiss Twitter:

Yesterday (Sunday 2/20)

"Crunching numbers to determine how many candidates we will admit from the defer pool. Trending looks good for non-residents - details Tues."

Then Today (Monday 2/21):

"Highly Desireable Defer Candidates: 26 Non-Residents and 21 Residents are currently in this category. More details this week."

Just an FYI for defers.

wow, so they have already accepted 97% of their total. assuming this is 300, only 9/47 get in 🙁

for some reason i remember them saying they accept 350, which still would only be like 10 lol

crossing my fingers harder than ever

do you guys think those deferred from december are given preference? probably not, but heres to hoping 🙂

That hasn't been updated since 2/3/2011, so they have probably accepted more than that by now since they released decisions on 2/18. But I do remember them saying that the total number of acceptances was 350.🙄

Twitter:
Total number of admission offers this year will be higher than originally forecast due to quality & trending high number of dual acceptances

Can't you just take people from the wait list instead?!?! Please??

According to twitter they will admit 6 Non Residents and 4 Residents from the Highly Desirable Defer Category. Check your status on Friday 2/25 if you are in that category. Good luck to all 🙂

Only 6 spots 🙁

When I saw that they were going to have to increase their acceptances I was hoping for more!!

Ahh well, gl everyone.
