Total number of admission offers this year will be higher than originally forecast due to quality & trending high number of dual acceptances

What's a dual acceptance? 😕 lol

Pretty sure that was a joke my man.

No, I think that was a serious question. I could be wrong, but I think Director Ruiz is referring to acceptances at schools of a caliber competitive with Michigan (the schools which are actually competition for students with Michigan). I would be pretty surprised if anyone's lone acceptance was to UMich given Director Ruiz's statistics at the interview day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but something to the tune of "99% of students offered an interview to UMich are accepted to a medical school" as well as some statistic on the average number of acceptances UMich matriculants hold prior to matriculating at UMMS.

So the admissions team met YESTERDAY to review the deferred candidates? For some reason I thought they always met on Wednesdays. Ahh...Scary!

Agreed--very scary. Less than 48 hours until the results of the review are unveiled . . .

I am so relieved!!!!!

I was a deferred from december.

Congrats! I guess that means those of us who didn't get the e-mail weren't so lucky. Anybody know if there's typically any waitlist movement?

Barely any waitlist movement...they overload their acceptance offers :-/

anybody know for sure if not getting an email = waitlist if you were a "highly desirable"?

Also, congratulations on the acceptance. Has your status changed yet?

I don't even feel bad for you a little bit.

+1. But congrats to those of you who got the acceptance video/e-mail today. It's probably curtains for me, and by curtains, I mean wait-list. A little disappointing, but I'm OK with it- I'm just glad I had the opportunity to come out to Michigan and interview at such a great school. On the bright side, now my folks don't have to be sad about me moving far away for med school, and I don't have to pay for a flight every time I want to visit them.

Are you sure all MSTP admits didn't get the video? Maybe you're the only one that didn't? 😕

We didn't, but we got a nice long letter from the MSTP director instead 😀

They've updated the status page for those of us who didn't get the acceptance. Waitlist, defer from December. Upper tier is 50 people (35 Residents) and they tend to take around 20, though they say the list isn't ranked, unlike last year where they gave the 'left-over' defers a numbered ranking. I'd like to say this means good news for the 20 of us who didn't make it this time, but I get the feeling that might not be the case.

Good luck, everybody!

hmm not that i expected to get in at all, but i was put on middle tier waitlist.

thats weird, considering i was in the highly desirable deferred category, with 47 others.

since about 10 of these people got accepted i think, that would leave 37. i figured the top of the waitlist would be all of these plus other people. not sure why people weren't deferred and still put in a higher position on the waitlist than those who were. does this make sense? lol

there are 50 people in the upper tier waitlist.

my love for michigan remains because they are so open with everything, so im glad ill be able to talk to dr. ruiz and find out more about my application.

congratulations to everyone who heard back!

are you OOS? since they're only 15 OOS in the top tier, and 6 highly desireble OOS were chosen, you could've been 22nd and be stuck in the middle tier despite being among the highly desirable

ah yes i am. that explains it. thanks haha

anyways, good luck to everyone!

anyone know when we can call to find out what went wrong?

was highly desirable, deferred in december, middle tier wait list. i really liked U of M too, but for my own sanity, I have to come to terms with the fact that it is basically a rejection. good luck everybody!

Highly Desirable deferred to february and I am also in the Middle Tier wait list. Does anyone know if you can move up to the Upper Tier once people start getting off the wait list? Good luck to everyone! Michigan was by far my first choice.

Yeah I was surprised that I was "highly desirable" enough to make the middle tier waitlist as well . I love Michigan the school and their admissions office is pretty good, but get rid of the defer status. It's stinks to be deferred to December, then to February just to find out you're in the middle tier of the waitlist. Just waitlist me in the first place!

Huh, I was also "highly desirable" and then landed in the middle tier. Even given the explanation of how this could happen to an OOS person... doesn't it seem kinda weird that going by these posts, at least 4 of us are in this position?

I am in the same position. "Highly Desirable" and now middle tier waitlist. I am also OOS. I loved Michigan and really wanted to go there but I feel like they lead me on. I would have rather just been waitlisted in the first place instead of having the decision drawn out only to land in the middle tier of the waitlist.

I totally agree. And I think it's kind of strange that 6/7 of the people on here who were deferred then waitlisted landed in the middle tier.

I've been accepted, and was wondering, should we expect something in snail mail as far as an acceptance letter?

Here's what I can't figure out: 26 highly desirable OOS - 6 from this pool admitted - 15 in the waitlist top tier = 5 from this pool landing in the middle tier. Given how many of us posted that we were "highly desirable" but landed in the middle tier (and I think most of us were OOS), these numbers just seem unlikely to me, especially cause I figure that many applicants don't even post here. I know it is a moot point and I will be going to a different med school, but the statistician in me is bothered.

I was deferred to December then deferred to February. Unfortunately I was waitlisted but I was placed in the top tier.

Me too...from dec to feb to top tier. This was like my top choice i guess i still have to wait for my first acceptance. Hopefully i wont be that 1% that director ruiz talked about 😕

i was deferred to february "highly desireable" and also waitlisted, but to middle tier. *sigh*

Yet another Highly Desirable Dec --> Highly Desirable Feb --> Middle Tier. I gotta say, I'm kinda WTF about it. They were pretty specific about saying not everyone's Highly Desirably Deferred, and yet we go straight from HDD to mid tier WL? What gives?

I guess this qualifies as one of those Student Doc rants Dir. Ruiz talked about... *LOL*

Looking at your MDApps, had you applied earlier you probably would've gotten in to many more schools, especially Michigan with their aggressive rolling admissions.

That said, that doesn't make much sense that you were "highly desirable" and then didn't get the top tier of the waitlist. 😕

I was Highly Desirable Feb but I made it to the Upper Tier WL. I am IS though. It sounds like several Highly Desirable OOS people were pushed to the Middle Tier.

So what should we do now to increase our chances of getting off the waitlist?

Yeah, of the 12 "Highly Desirable" defers that have reported on here, 2 were accepted, 3 were top-tier waitlisted, 7 were middle-tier waitlisted, and 1 was waitlisted but didn't say which tier. That strikes me as pretty weird. I'm only saying this because on my interview day I swear I remember Director Ruiz saying that those who were deferred but not accepted would be placed in the top tier and these numbers are saying otherwise.

I appreciate all of Michigan's transparency, but I feel like we were deceived a bit here. Not a huge deal, really, as a lot of us are in other places and I still think Michigan's an amazing school, but something they should maybe consider 🙂.

When they say that residency was a factor in where you ended up on the waitlist, do they mean whether you are in state or out of state or do they mean which state you have your residency from?

HD Defer/Waitlist outcomes: confusing, yes. trickery, nope. Factors like residency and strong performance of late interviews forced changes.

Well, that answers a lot. Thanks for being so helpful during this whole process! My experience with Michigan really was a great one, maybe I can get another chance here for residency 🙂

does anyone know what time second look starts on friday? I'm trying to book flights....

I can't decide if I love or hate the extreme transparency of U of M's twitter posts.... scholarships have apparently been decided on, but they won't be released until at least the 21st! TMI. Knowing the decisions have been made somehow makes the anticipation that much worse!
