OK, so based on this information posted today, interviews are over.

I'm sure everyone knows this already, but just in case, I'll post it again:

ECU has room for 78 students. They do not over-accept students. That means that the maximum number of acceptances out at any time is 78. Of the 76 offers they have made, we have no idea how many have been or will be refused. We can all go back through this thread, and see that there are some people who have been accepted that are clearly going elsewhere (vickpick comes to mind - headed to UNC).

Last year, everyone still in the running received letters letting them know that they were on the alternate list the second weekend in March. It looks a little like the acceptance numbers are higher this year, but that could mean that more people have already refused their acceptances - I don't know.

From last year's thread, there were 13 people who were on the alternate list, and I think 7 of them got accepted after they received their alternate list letters - pretty good odds. As one who was not accepted off the list, however, it makes for an excruciating summer.

I hope that this year, the SDN posters make up the group of people who finally get their acceptance letters. Good luck, everyone.

Since I'm a first time applicant, I don't really know much about the alternate list and how it works. How do they select applicants off of the list? Also, when is the latest that someone on the alternate list should wait for an acceptance offer? And finally, will the applicants who made the alternate list be notified of their result, even if it is a rejection?

Great questions, dr2serve. Here are my best answers: The alternate list is officially unranked. If you make the alternate list, it means that your application was good enough for admission, they just simply ran out of available seats. Most of the movement off the alternate list will happen around May 15. May 15 is the nationwide deadline when any deposits you have made to schools become non-refundable. So, if you get accepted to four medical schools, and pay a deposit to all four (just to hold your spot while you make up your mind), most everyone makes the final decision, and their three declined seats come open.

If you call the admissions office, they will tell you that although it is unlikely, alternate list candidates have been called as late as the first day of classes. There was one year when someone didn't show up for orientation, so someone from the alternate list got called.

If you make the alternate list, you will have to send in a form that states that you do, in fact, want to be on the alternate list. Once classes start next fall, you will receive a letter from Dr. Peden that confirms that the year has started, and the application pool is officially closed.

Since the alternate list is not ranked, I am curious about the method by which people are chosen off the list. Based on the admission statistics (particularly the gender statistics), it appears as if they replace like for like (if a male turns down and offer, another male is chosen off the alternate list). Based on the demographics they release of the matriculants, I cannot determine if other criteria are used (age is a major question mark - particularly for me and the other non-trads).

Hope that helps - I'll try my best to pass along what I know, but it's only coming from the perspective of a re-applicant, and I have no inside information whatsoever.

Thanks! The info was very helpful. Since interviews are most likely over, does that mean EVERYONE still in the running now makes the alternate list? Or, will they select only some applicants for the list? Sorry to bother you with all these questions, but I've been anxiously waiting since September for a decision! Good luck!

No, there will be some rejections. If you call the office and ask about your application, they will tell you that no news is good news, and that is correct. There are still rejections going out, and there will likely be a rash of rejections in the next few weeks - now that interviews are over, there are a lot of people who are still in the pool, but who realistically have no shot at all. Those folks will be cut loose in the coming days and weeks (depending on when the committee meets).

If last year is any indicator, the letters for rejection go out before the letters for the alternate list. I remember that my letter last year was dated March 9, and I received it on March 12, so my guess is that decisions will be made next week or the week after, but again, that is mere speculation.

Hey everyone. Just thought I'd add some thoughts about the alternate list. I was accepted off of it last year. Waited a terrible 6 months or so from my interview time to finally hear back.

If you get on the alternate list, PREPARE FOR THE WORST. It is better to get ready to reapply and then find out you got in than it is to not be prepared to reapply when you finally find out you didn't get in. You may not know for sure until June or July! So, accept the waitlist spot, send updates, call, whatever. But DON'T regret not using the few months you have to prepare your next application. A lot of people do get lucky, but a lot do not! (And then, if you do get in, go absolutely crazy and savor every last bit of your free time.)

Good luck!!!

So how do we know they aren't gonna make any more regular offers?

If ECU does indeed make 78 offers, then technically, there are still two spots left of regular offers. This also assumes everyone who was made an offer accepted. We'll just have to hang in there.

You won't know when no more offers will be made. Matt was saying they don't tell you it's over until classes start (in August). There should be some waitlist movement on/right after May 15 (when every accepted candidate must choose a school and can't hold spots at more than one school without losing their deposit). Or at least that has been the case in the past. If you haven't heard by June, I'd say pretty much all bets are off.

Hey Folks, last check in for me here. I got a very thin envelope today that said "Hell no we aren't admitting you" or something to that effect. I know y'all are always hungry for numbers, so I will divulge mine. They won't truly be helpful though, I don't think, as I am a very non-traditional student. MCAT scores 31 and 33, undergrad GPA 3.56 (science and overall), graduate GPA 3.57. I am going to a kickarse DO school so I am very grateful. Good luck to you all.

Sorry to hear about that, Dr or bust dr. Congrats, though, on your DO acceptance. I know you're pumped.

So, here is the updated list:

  • Doctor Drea
  • MedBound1
  • Dr or Bust dr - Rejected Mar. 16
  • chucktown
  • Packman2003
  • runnerer - Rejected Feb. 20

Anyone else get any news? If this year mirrors last year, we should be getting letters this weekend letting us know about our status. Rejections went first last year, then acceptances and alternate list notices after that. We got letters on a Saturday that were dated on a Tuesday.

Good luck, everyone!

Still nothing from Brody for me. I personally know of two people with acceptances that will/have withdrawn. So that is 2 confirmed spots that will open up.

I was hopeful we would all hear something or another this weekend. Nothing for me either..

wow, ECU rejecting a lot of people this year.. what are they doing? 3 of my friends got rejection letters over the last week or so/.

This thread is sooo quiet this year. No news at all yet for me. Any updates for anyone else? Any ideas when we can expect anything? The website hasn't updated for Mid-March yet so I wonder what the numbers look like.

No news here, either. I called about 2 weeks ago and the woman I spoke to said that she wasn't sure when all of the decisions would go out, but "no news is good news".

I haven't heard anything either. I just know personally of a few rejections which people received last week. Also, Dr. Pedan told me friend everyone should hear within the next six weeks, and this week is the "6th week". So hopefully, we will all get some GOOD news this week!

According to the admissions office all of the decision letters were mailed out as of yesterday. Good luck everyone!

Oh geez. Most people should be getting them today then if you're in NC. Good luck everyone, hopefully we all get good news. 👍

Did you happen to ask if they have more acceptances going out with this or if its just rejections/waitlists?

Sorry, I didn't ask. It totally slipped my mind. Maybe someone else will call and report back (hint, hint)?

I just called today and Lynn told me that all decisions were mailed out today. I asked if only rejections/ waitlists were being sent or if acceptances were being sent as well and all she would say was that all decisions were mailed and that we should hear within the next few days. This is absolute torture!

No time to panic just yet. Once again, I only have last year as a model, but the letters seem to take a lot longer to arrive than we all think it should.

I seem to remember that we were all expecting the letters to arrive on Thursday (based on the day they were mailed from Greenville), but we didn't get them until Saturday. The mailman is almost to my house now. If they went out on Tuesday, I'll post whether or not they've made it to the Triangle yet or not.

The smart money says that we will all be on the alternate list (although there could be some acceptances in there). Just so you know, if you call ECU after you're on the alternate list, they will tell you that it means that your application is good enough for acceptance, but they ran out of room, and that the alternate list is unranked. They will also tell you that they have enough people on the alternate list to fill the class once over. This differs from what I heard with Dr. Peden, who said that there were only about three dozen on the alternate list, so I don't know what the exact numbers are.

Good luck, everyone!

UPDATE: Nothing in the mail for me today. . .

I just got a letter inviting me to be on the wait list. Ugh, more waiting. A friend of mine was rejected today also.

Waitlisted here as well. Better than getting rejected out right, but still I had a feeling that today might be that special day. Does anyone have any idea about our chance at this stage?

I was accepted on Friday as well! Goodluck to everyone on the waitlist, from what I hear it moves quite a bit.

congratulations to those accepted to the class of 2016 at BSOM, and best of luck to those on the waitlist. Thought I'd hop on your thread to see if anyone needed housing advice in Greenville. I'm a soon-to-graduate M4 and would be happy to tell you about some of the more popular med & dental student housing neighborhoods and complexes.

As of April 1, 2012, we have .....

Received 876 AMCAS applications
Received 774 Supplementary applications
Interviewed 466 applicants
Made 98 offers
(Generally it takes 100-125 offers to fill a class)

Last year there were 100 offers made as of April 1, so almost identical. In the past few years it looks like they've been making 130-140 offers to fill the class. So I would guess that roughly half of the ~75-80 person wait list will get in again this year.

Accepted today!!!!!

Waitlisted 3/23

Hold fast hope those on WL anything is possible!!!

I was a "competitive" applicant in all aspects (teaching, research, work, volunteering) except for my mcat score, 31, with VR score, 7. And my nonscience GPA was 2.8. Is quitting my current job as a pharmaceutical chemist and going back to school to get an economics degree for the purpose of showing I am capable of nonscience academia a good idea.

Congrats!!!!! I'm out of town and away from my mailbox until next week, I'm eager to see if I have a similar letter waiting!! Your acceptance came by paper mail right?
