Thanks, nimDOC (and everyone else).
Like MedBound1 said, I received a letter a few weeks ago informing me of my alternate list status, and then got the acceptance letter this week.
I spoke with Dr. Peden a few weeks ago, and this is the information he gave me about the wait list:
If you have absolutely NO SHOT of getting in, you wouldn't be on the alternate list, so the fact that you make it at ECU is a good thing. He didn't have the exact number of people on the list when I talked with him, but estimated it around 80 people. The alternate list is NOT ranked, but they try to keep the accepted students in a similar demographic breakdown of the entire acceptance pool.
If you look at the demographics of previous classes, you will see that the male/female ratio is either exactly, or very close to, 1:1, which matches the applicant pool. There is no other information that can be gleaned about demographics, based on the information that is provided.
While the list is not ranked, it is somewhat (even if not "officially") stratified into thirds, and they will not disclose which third you are in.
When the update comes out for the April 15 numbers, I think you'll get a good idea of how close they will get to the 125 offers this year. Last year, they ended up making 137 offers. They are currently (as of April 1) at 98. If that number increases dramatically, then I would imagine that the total number of offers will be well above the 120 limit, as the real alternate list movement still will not happen for a month.
I don't think the match for match scenario that nimDOC mentioned is accurate - that would limit the selection off the list too much.
If there can be any good news wrapped in potential bad news, it is this: If you don't make it off the alternate list this year (which completely sucks, and makes for a long summer), they will tell you that they cannot imagine a situation in which someone who makes the alternate list this year wouldn't get an interview next year, so there are some positives. . .
Best of luck to everyone - I can't wait to meet all of you in Greenville.
