I was a "competitive" applicant in all aspects (teaching, research, work, volunteering) except for my mcat score, 31, with VR score, 7. And my nonscience GPA was 2.8. Is quitting my current job as a pharmaceutical chemist and going back to school to get an economics degree for the purpose of showing I am capable of nonscience academia a good idea.
I don't think it's a good idea. I graduated with a BS in Chemistry and Economics and had a 3.8 GPA in both science + non-science. I had a similar MCAt score, 32 (12,10,10) to yours and I'm still on the waitlist, so clearly it didn't help me that much. If I were you I would just retake the MCAT and bring that 7 up to a 10 if possible.

any tips on how to become more prepared for VR section. I got a 7 and aiming for a 10 this summer. I already used the prep books. I wish I could find the source of verbal reasoning passages.

I know that rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, but on the US World News rankings, ECU plummeted from 10th in primary care to 31st within the past year. Does anyone know why it may have dropped so quickly??

Congrats!!!!! I'm out of town and away from my mailbox until next week, I'm eager to see if I have a similar letter waiting!! Your acceptance came by paper mail right?

Yes it was snail mail...hope you get the "thick" envelope shortly!

Good luck, id recommend sending in a letter of intent/interest. It had been since last fall that I heard anything from ECU so I wanted to update them on what all I was up to over the past few months. May have helped, maybe not.

I will say that ECU definitely considers the WHOLE applicant. I had a lower MCAT/good GPA but it was healthcare experience, dedicated extracurriculars and a well rounded education that I felt really helped me the most at the interview.

Just got the letter today via snail mail!

Looking forward to seeing you all in the fall! I'll be the old guy in the class.

Stats:

Non-traditional student
Post-bacc GPA: 3.9
Graduate GPA: 3.82
MCAT: 30Q
Re-applicant - Alternate List last year

So very excited to post this! Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Congrats Matt 🙂

Shibby: Why economics? Why not public health or something more relevant? Lots of people in my class (2015) have MPH's already. Only takes about 1 year. But as Brody puts it, it's a double edged sword to get a masters. You have to do extremely well. The average master's GPA of enrolling students is 3.9 typically.

Also, a 31 MCAT is pretty good. About average for Brody. Meet with Dr. Peden and ask what you can improve on if you don't get in. Maybe the 7 in VS is holding you back. Maybe it's the non-science GPA, or maybe it's something else.

Good luck to everyone! We 2015ers can't wait for you to take our places as M1s.

Congrats Matt!

So were you originally on the alternate list or just waiting to hear back?

Can anyone in here give me a rundown of the alternate list....if its not ranked. Then briefly how do they pull people off when spaces become available? I ddid read someone mention that it's a match per match type thing...like if a mid mcat high gpa didn't accept the offer they'd pool a mid mcat high gpa from the alternate..is this accurate anyone?

Congratulations Matt in the hat!

Brody made final decisions that were released between 3/22 - 3/24 depending on how long it took your mail to get there. Every post-interview applicant was told either accepted, wait-listed, or rejected. So anybody still waiting to hear past those dates is on the wait-list.

No one knows exactly how spots are filled although there are rumors that it is by demographics, academics, or neither. All that is really known is that the wait-list is roughly the size of the class ~78 and it looks like in past years they end up extending about ~35-40 offers to people off the wait list by the time its all over. Hope this helped,

Thanks, nimDOC (and everyone else).

Like MedBound1 said, I received a letter a few weeks ago informing me of my alternate list status, and then got the acceptance letter this week.

I spoke with Dr. Peden a few weeks ago, and this is the information he gave me about the wait list:

If you have absolutely NO SHOT of getting in, you wouldn't be on the alternate list, so the fact that you make it at ECU is a good thing. He didn't have the exact number of people on the list when I talked with him, but estimated it around 80 people. The alternate list is NOT ranked, but they try to keep the accepted students in a similar demographic breakdown of the entire acceptance pool.

If you look at the demographics of previous classes, you will see that the male/female ratio is either exactly, or very close to, 1:1, which matches the applicant pool. There is no other information that can be gleaned about demographics, based on the information that is provided.

While the list is not ranked, it is somewhat (even if not "officially") stratified into thirds, and they will not disclose which third you are in.

When the update comes out for the April 15 numbers, I think you'll get a good idea of how close they will get to the 125 offers this year. Last year, they ended up making 137 offers. They are currently (as of April 1) at 98. If that number increases dramatically, then I would imagine that the total number of offers will be well above the 120 limit, as the real alternate list movement still will not happen for a month.

I don't think the match for match scenario that nimDOC mentioned is accurate - that would limit the selection off the list too much.

If there can be any good news wrapped in potential bad news, it is this: If you don't make it off the alternate list this year (which completely sucks, and makes for a long summer), they will tell you that they cannot imagine a situation in which someone who makes the alternate list this year wouldn't get an interview next year, so there are some positives. . .

Best of luck to everyone - I can't wait to meet all of you in Greenville.

-Matt

Congratulations Matt! Good to hear you'll be joining us next year 🙂

Congratulations Matt! Good to hear you'll be joining us next year 🙂
Thanks, Girl. I officially paid my deposit today, so it's official. I'll be a Pirate in August! Looking forward to meeting you in person.

Matt, is there anything you did since being placed on the waitlist that you believe may have helped in receiving an acceptance?

DrShadow:

No, I really don't think so. I sent a letter of interest in February before I made the alternate list, but there really wasn't anything else that I did. I wish there were a magic pattern of actions that I could provide for everyone, but there really isn't one.

It sounds trite, but hang in there - I have to believe that things will move briskly after May 15.

After languishing on the alternate list last year, I can honestly say that I'm pulling for everyone. You all saw Girl000 post on this thread - she's a great example of patience. I think she got off the wait list in mid-June last year. It was amazing for her.

Keep the faith!

Hey guys, I just got my letter today, about 5 minutes ago. I'm so excited, but it still hasn't hit me yet. I just wanted to thank everyone on the forum for sharing their experiences and providing useful information. I can't tell you how nice it was to know I wasn't the only one stuck on the waitlist. I wish good luck to everyone still waiting for an acceptance. Like Matt in the Hat, I too sent a letter of intent/update letter in February and would encourage you to do the same if you haven't already. Once again thanks and good luck!

Congrats!!!

I was totally not expecting anything today after your good fortune. I just checked my mail and my jaw hit the floor, accepted to Brody as well!!!

Congrats, guys! I know that you're feeling fantastic this afternoon.

Looking forward to meeting you guys in August. Everyone else, hang in there - we still haven't gotten to May 15 yet, and that is when the most movement will take place!

FYI, there is a Facebook group that has been started:

I was accepted a few weeks ago but have decided to decline my offer. Good luck to every on the waitlist!

Best of luck ayelet! I would think that there's still at least 25-30 offers to go out before June 1st, seeing that it's still nearly a month out from the May 15 deadline. We're rootin for you. Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have.

Congrats! Just so you know, a few of us posters from last year's thread that are at Brody now were talking about you a few weeks ago and how we really hoped you'd hear good news this year. Glad to hear you got in. See you at orientation!

Thanks, norm! That's very nice of you guys to mention me. I got a Facebook message and friend request from Girl000 today, so it's been great to put a real name with that screen name. I'm very excited about heading to Greenville in a few months. Can't wait to meet you guys, either.

Hey Matt! How many people got off the alternate last year, if you remember? As in, how many acceptances were offered?

Also, when you reapplied, did you retake the MCAT and change your personal statement?

Congratulations! Hoping for the best...maybe I'll be in your class :xf: (knock on wood)

joie de vivre,

Read this post that I quoted from Matt to answer some of your questions. Last year ~35-40 offers were made off the wait list which is approximately 80 people total. That puts it around a 50% of being accepted off the wait list.

They have made ~12-15 offers off the wait list so far this year, judging by the difference in the admissions updates between april 1 and april 15. That means they most likely have 20 more offers to give by the time its all over.

Best of luck to you.

Hi joie de vivre,

To add to MedBound's response, when I reapplied, I did retake the MCAT (2010, I had a 27M. 2011, I got a 30Q). I also rewrote both my AMCAS personal statement and my secondary essay for Brody. I think that the last number that they published for last year's acceptances was 137 (going for memory, but that number stands out in my head).

I'll be curious to see what the numbers are next week when they make the April 30 update. There are still lots of people with multiple acceptances that haven't made up their minds yet, so I think optimism is still called for until the first of June. After that time, there is still a possibility that you could get the letter, but the chances drop dramatically, realistically speaking.

Hang in there, everyone. I know it sucks, but you'll get through it, and you'll get that letter - if not this year, then next year. Also wanted to point out one more note of encouragement: Last year, there were about 13 of us that got to "know" one another here while we suffered through the alternate list process. Of those 13, one of them left the board, and I haven't heard anything from them since, but every one of us got accepted. I think 7 got in off the alternate list last year, and the other 5 of us got accepted this year (many of them at multiple places). So, keep the faith! It will be OK.

Withdrew from everywhere else, committed to Brody!! Hoo-ray!

See everyone in August!!

As of May 1, 2012, we have .....

Received 876 AMCAS applications
Received 774 Supplementary applications
Interviewed 466 applicants
Made 116 offers
(Generally it takes 100-125 offers to fill a class)

I interpret this as there will be more than 125 offers here. . .

Good luck, everyone!

yall i'm going crazy with this waitlist stuff....Brody is my first choice and its looking like i may have to try again...goodness 🙁 i guess i'm at the bottom of the alternate list.

Some people have said you know you get in when you get the email about the background check! haven't got that yet 🙁

I think for the majority of people, myself included, the acceptance letter came well before the AAMC background check, so I wouldn't worry about that. Best of luck with your application. Judging by the numbers that were released yesterday, they've only made about half their offers from the wait list so far, and only made a few offers in total between April 15 - May 1. Only about 1/4 of the people on the wait list have been offered spots so far, so there still is hope, especially since May 15 isn't even here yet.

Best of luck and I hope you get that letter. On the flip side, try not to put off filling out your application for next year, because you want to submit as early as possible to give yourself the best chance for next year if this year doesn't end up working out!

With 20+ offers left to give out, I hope to see some exciting posts in the next few weeks from SDN members.

I got the letter well before the background check email as well.

My advice to everyone still waiting:

  1. Keep the faith - optimism is your best asset. After June 1, you can start thinking about not getting the letter this year.
  2. Start working on next year's AMCAS application (opened yesterday).
  3. Apply as early as possible.
  4. When you go to your interview (almost a guarantee), tell all your interviewers that you were on the alternate list this year.

Best of luck to you all - I can't wait to meet you in the fall.

Congratulations Matt in the Hat!! I've been following your progress!
Best of luck in the future!
Nessy

Had anyone heard anything from ecu lately? I thought with May 15 right around the corner there would be more action this past week

I gave up my waitlist spot this week. It was a tough decision because Brody is such a great school, but ultimately another school was a better fit. Good luck to everyone still waiting, and I hope that those of you who are accepted have a great 4 years!

For those still on the wait list, May 15 is just 4 days away, best of luck to everyone and look forward to seeing you in the fall!

I got in off the waitlist today!
Got an email this morning while I was at work about the aamc background check and when I got home there was a letter waiting for me dated may 14th.
Excited beyond words
Best wishes to everyone.

Big Congrats!

I'm sure there will be more over the next 2 weeks.. For those accepted who haven't seen it yet, here's the facebook group for the Brody Class of 2016!

So it looks like they're up to 121 offers now. I'm very surprised it only increased by 5 offers since May 1st this year! Hopefully that means they're still a bunch more offers to hand out.

I'm also on the waitlist. Hoping the rest of us will hear some good news soon!

Yeah and ayelet just said that he withdrew his waitlist position. Congrats on the other school by the way🙂. So it looks like it's just me, Doctor Drea, Packman2003, and possibly jp134711 who are still waiting (on SDN anyway). Hopefully we'll get the good news soon! ugh this waiting is agonizing!

I fixed it for you.

Also, thank you for the congratulations! This was my third application cycle and it's a huge relief to know that I never have to go through this again.

I'm rooting for all of you still waiting. I hope that you get good news in the next few weeks; you wouldn't have made it on the waitlist if you had no shot at all of getting accepted.

Haha thank you for the correction and I appoligize! It's so hard to tell on here! What school did you decide on?

No worries. My husband was reading over my shoulder this morning and he was like "Is there something you've been hiding?"

I decided on Wake Forest. ACC, baby!

I just got my acceptance letter! I can't wait to meet you guys in August!

Congrats Doctor Drea!

I was also accepted today!! Looking forward to August!

Hrider! Did you just give up your acceptance?

I wonder how many more acceptances will go out. From the looks of it, there are only 3 of us left from sdn that are still on the Alternate list (all from March 23)...

Joie de vivre (female)
Packman2003 (male?)
Tarheel0909 (?)

I really hope that means we might get in this next round? *knock on wood* :xf: What do you think? I feel hopeless.
