They wouldn't give me #'s when I asked for it. Like the number of ppl applied vs still not rejected, #'s interviewed, #'s waitlisted, #'s given acceptance invitations (should be 160 total spots right?)

The only known # is the 160 they plan on having this year, to my knowledge.

There will only be 120 students in the class this year, not 160. I don't think they can accurately "predict" how many will get in off the waitlist -- it really depends on where people decide to go! I'm sure there will be a lot of variability expected from past years, as well, since the school is still new, and even closer to full accreditation.

I can say that after some MDApps research -- 21 out of 23 people accepted to FIU this cycle have multiple acceptance -- so you can definitely expect there to be movement come the May 15th deadline! Maybe even sooner once financial aid packages are sent out.

Alternate list today. Interviewed early/mid December. Will likely be withdrawing. Good luck all!

Hmm I don't know MDApps in and out - I'm guessing w/only 23 reported participation is low in proportion to their actual invitations to date. See, during my interview I was sure they explicitly said that their plan was to go to 120 this cycle, then 160 the following, but due to pressure on them to increase output, they jumped to 160 this year. Maybe I was wrong and it was supposed to be 80 and it jumped to 120...?

I believe the class size is 120 this year. Hopefully we will see some movement before the major movement that will likely occur around may 15. I

Are the only options accept or alternate? Or are people also rejected?

They are only allowed to do 120 because they don't have full accreditation yet, regardless of how many they want to accept...

I'm sure this is only a "sample" of the population -- since I'm sure by now they've probably extended at least 120 offers, but if you look at the trend, it looks like many people have multiple acceptances, so my guess is there should definitely be waitlist movement!

Are the second look emails only going out to the accepted as of now?

I'm not sure, but I know someone who was on the alternate list last year who was invited to second look (and got accepted a little bit after that)

Yeah, it seems like they are only sending them to those that hold an official seat as of right now (Unless anyone knows otherwise).

Well, the second look e-mail that I got only has the date saying that there will be more details to come so I'm not even sure they would even know if they would have space for Alternate List applicants.

Just got this status (pre-interview): Withdrawn Before Accepted (Review Completed – Applicant Not Selected for Interview) -- anyone else? I guess this means they are done with giving interviews.

Same but they did not even e-mail him. Had to go on his account to find out. My question to them is do they think term is better then rejected

Has anyone's status on the FIU website not changed even though they received the e-mail about getting on the alternate list?

same here -- "withdrawn before accepted" -- only found out because i logged in to my account. glad i did, or i'd still be wondering!

Pretty quiet these days :/ Here's to hoping that some good news goes out soon to those of us on the accept- alt list. Are they done interviewing?

spoke to them today. They said at the next meeting they plan to accept 10 ppl off the alternate list.

GL to those waiting this week! :luck:

Anybody feel like making the 2016 FB page? My final semester turned out to be quite difficult actually, and I'm not feeling particularly motivated 😉.

Any news on those 10 acceptances that were supposed to go out?

I have not heard of any movement as of yet...I wish they would let us know where we are positioned on the alternate list. It would be such a big help.

Enormous. I can't see how knowing where one is positioned could possibly compromise the integrity of their system or our perception of our odds. It isn't the same thing as saying 'you have a good chance' vs not. Maybe there were applicants who pressure the person over the phone so hard that it is very hard not to cave and end up giving out an odds ratio which later turns out false?

I wish a professional "I cannot under any circumstances give you any assurance or opinion about what your position in line you hold means about your odds... If you understand this, then I can tell you the position if you still want to know." line could be used instead. This could be a problem I guess if updates or letters/calls on your behalf etc can 'shift' your position though? Who knows.

I do accept that its possible that if you're #50 in line that could make you feel terrible at first, not knowing that odds are by May there's so much movement that most ppl in the 50's get in, etc etc. I wouldn't know enough about the process to interpret the number. However, I guess I'm sucked in by the theory that the patient should be informed of everything as much as possible, and it feels like this is analogous to that. That I should be informed of this with a certain amount of transparency. Even if I don't know how to use the info I get.

Stopping typing now, haha.

Anybody hear anything about second look for alternates? Also has anyone been told any relative idea of their position on the alternate list?

This thread is all crickets. No love for any SDNers as of late? Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys :xf:

There will be no second look for alternates this year in case anyone else was wondering. Lets hope some acceptances are rolled out soon!

Hey Guys!
We are VERY excited to have 120 of you come into HWCOM next year!!!!
I was wondering if you have set up a class facebook page yet?
The class of 2015 uses their facebook page to communicate a lot! We use it to set up social events, ask academic related questions, clear up concerns, vent, put up pictures ect ect ect.
If there is a facebook page please put up the link so the current HWCOM MSC can drop in! If not- we would be happy to create one for you all!
Let me know!!!
Best,
Penny :biglove::biglove:

I was looking for the 2016 FB group the other day. I wasn't sure who is supposed to make it so I didn't make it myself, but if you want to that would help. 🙂

so i think i remember from my interview that students at FIU take the USMLE step 1 after their 3rd year? is that really how it is because I thought you had to pass step 1 to begin your clerkships, and i thought that step 2 took place after 3rd year. any info on this would be much appreciated.

Yes this is partly true. At FIU we take our steps after our 3rd year. You do not have to have passed your first step to do clerkships. FIU wants you to put the knowledge you learn in the classroom to use- thus solidifying it to memory. Statistically the schools that do it this way (FIU is not the only one in the nation) tend to score higher. I am starting my 2nd year on Monday, and I love FIU's system. If you have any other concerns please feel free to message me- it would be my pleasure to help any of you make an educated choice.

We are currently creating a facebook page for the FIU HWCOM C/O 2016.
I'll keep you posted! :banana:Penny:banana:

Hope you guys can help me out…

1) How many seats are in the 2012 incoming class?
2) How many acceptances have been offered thus far?
3) How many students are expected to be admitted off the waitlist (based on historical data)?

Thanks in advance for any input!!

There's 120 seats for the 2012 incoming class. No idea about how many acceptances have been offered thus far other than that it's been more than 120 and that there have been a few people who already have been admitted off the waitlist.

Does anyone know when we should receive our financial aid information?

they can only hold 120 deposits since they are new, so there should be quite a bit more offers made as the initial 120 begin to go elsewhere.

Has any alternates heard any new news?

Received a mass email yesterday asking if I wanted to remain on the alternate list...Basically, they're trying to determine who's still interested in being on the wait list as they anticipate that it will start moving in the next couple of weeks.

Hope this helps.

Did this email go out to all alternates...or just those high up on the list at this point?

Don't know the answer to that, but I received it yesterday around 11:15 am, if that helps.

How interesting - for those of you interested and keeping track, for your reference, I received this email update at 12:25. I don't know if batch significance matters, or if there was lag on my server. Anyone else have times?
