Well... for me, I heard about NYU's "last interview day" on SDN. So for me, that's just the same as hearing from some other stranger on SDN that a school has stopped interviewing and the school didn't even tell any of the interviewees that they are the last batch. I guess I am a little frustrated with this application process in general (not just NYU) especially compared to friends applying to PhD programs. Such a stark difference in how applicants are treated.

+1 and there ARE some schools that are timely with getting back to you so it's certainly not impossible to keep applicants informed.

Although I was lucky enough to get an interview at nyu this year, I really feel for those who didn't. Having had a rough year applying last year, I know how bad it hurts. The culture of applying to med school really needs to be reformed prioritizing more information for all applicants.

Couldn't agree more.

So when do we think that NYU will start to let some more acceptances go out? The facebook group for the class of 2016 has remained steady at 21 members (including first year student reps) for about 3 weeks now...

Well final decisions are March 1st... I think they just might release a ton of info at once.

Yeah I know they say everyone will find out NYUs decision by March 1st, but the admissions people keep saying that they will continue to send out acceptances on a "rolling basis" until then. Has anyone heard of any acceptances since the initial ones sent back in December?

Does that mean post-interview rejections will also be given out at that time too? Or do they just put everyone on the waitlist? Sigh, I'm already thinking very negatively...

Ya NYU has been pretty quiet since the first round..I predict the next round will be March 1st as they said

Yes, post-interview rejections will also be given out.

Isn't their acceptance rate something like 49% post interview?

It was about 44% last year, including acceptances off waitlists. But I would imagine that they accept more people up front rather than waitlisting most.

44% seems pretty high, actually. Could I ask where you found that information?

I was wondering if there is a separate website link to check our application status post-interview other than the website where we scheduled the interview.

do you guys know if we have to submit our CSS profile to the financial aid office as well? thanks!

I am in the group of interviewees who should be hearing back in the next few weeks. Do you think it is too late to send an update letter?

Any idea where we should send an update letter (assuming via e-mail)?

i thought everyone is supposed to hear back in the next few weeks

I remember reading somewhere (probably in this thread) that all final decisions are supposed to go out March 1st.

This is true as it says it on NYU's website. However, last year some heard a few days before the expected date of March 1st. Unfortunately, the only decisions were rejections and waitlists for this "final decision" phase.

God this makes me so depressed. I loved NYU so much. ._.

I can haz acceptance plez??

I wouldn't lose hope just yet. So far people have only posted here receiving acceptances on Dec 15th (and that number seemed smaller than it was last year). In past years they've released acceptances on more than one date before March 1st, so maybe they're just saving them all up for one big round this year.

Of course, all of this is just pure sdn speculation. Overall it seems like NYUs process is particularly opaque (it really doesn't seem like semi-rolling admissions!)

So if we hear before March 1st, it's probably good news, but otherwise, no?

Though recall this isn't the same admissions committee as pervious years. This is the first year they've indicated any form of "rolling admissions" whatsoever; so unless they're flat out being dishonest, I would expect at least a few acceptances late feb/ early march

Ya, who knows what will happen. I believe last year the ones who heard before March 1st were waitlisted and the ones who heard later were rejected. Everything could be different this year though. I'm just sick of this waiting.

I just found out that they already ended their interview season. I never heard a *!%# thing from them, and my status page still says i'm in review.... it's nice to know that nyu thinks so little of their applicants.

I completely disagree with this sentiment. NYU has been one of the more transparent schools, with a complete calendar detailing the specifics as to when interviews start, conclude, decisions are sent, and a final decision notice sent (March 1st). They even set up a Twitter account to convey relative admissions information to those interested, and have online instant messaging with the admissions office set up for applicants.

I second that. Many, many, many schools leave applicants hanging until March without giving them a shred of information. As mentioned, NYU has been very transparent about how their application process works. They probably prefer to keep applicants in the running as long as possible, even if that means that they end their interview season before some applicants have heard back from them. Personally I prefer that to getting highly impersonal rejections from schools who send them out in arbitrary waves just so they can stop dealing with applicants. Or schools like UChicago, which is known to send out rejections within days of receiving secondaries (but of course, once the check has cleared for the secondary fee). To me, this type of process is more indicative of a school that "thinks so little" of their applicants.

As someone who hasn't heard a thing from NYU since August, I disagree with this. Every medical school sends out highly impersonal rejections, whether it's 6 days after the application submission or 6 months. If they are not going to consider me a competitive applicant at their school -- if I am not what they are looking for -- that's fine. But at least let me know! I actually like U Chicago. If they read my application, and saw that they didn't like something about my app, and know that they will have thousands of more applications to review, I am glad they let me know so I don't wait for MONTHS hoping if I am still maybe in the running. Keeping me in the running for as long as possible is fine, but once a school has decided that it's finished inviting people for interviews, inform the applicants directly. Jeez, the hefty application fee we paid isn't even enough for them to inform us that we are clearly not in the running anymore? I think it's quite rude. It was bad enough having to wait half a year before realizing that the interview season is over, but it's another thing to know that the school doesn't even inform those of us who have not been invited for an interview.

I understand what you're saying and I think different applicants are bothered by different things. I know that what bothers many people about U Chicago is that the [incredibly short] amount of time that it often takes them to reject applicants suggests that they are doing so based on numbers alone rather than anything you say in your secondary application. If that is the case, it is not only rude but bordering on unethical to even send out secondaries to all applicants. Again, I understand your frustration about NYU though.

I get that they try to be very transparent about their application process, but with all the schools each applicant is applying to, it's unreasonable to expect them to constantly check daily twitter feeds or website updates just to glean where they are in their application process, and whether the applicant probably has been rejected.

Honestly, it's the easiest thing in the world to just send an email or even update the status pages for anyone that has been rejected.

Also, it is possible that even though the official interview date for NYU has ended, they don't like to reject applicants, just in case they decide they want to interview a few more in the next month or so. I don't think that this is outside the realm of possibility...

hhahaha talk about denial... This is exactly why they need to contact applicants directly and make it clear that they have been rejected. You can't just sit back and wait for them to figure it out on their own...

Really? You o realize we are talking thousands of applications.

Both arguments are valid. We're talking about two sides of the same coin. A school can never keep everyone happy and do as they seem is best given their available resources.

P.S. I too am in the group that has not heard a peep, but have no complaints as the last interview date is clearly stated on their web site.

I think these med schools probably have an automated system to get in contact with applicants. Check the box next to an applicant's name, type up a message you want to send them (or copy+paste), click send. Or so I'd imagine. And I am guessing people who work in admissions offices are getting paid to do things like this.

To add to my previous post, I don't think there's any negative effect to the way U Chicago does things, actually (though I was upset when I got my rejection a week after submitting the secondary). Really, if a school has ~6000 applicants to sort through, and it plans on interviewing only about ~1000 maximum, that means about 5000 are not even getting a shot at the interview. I think it's impossible for them to really be "actively considering" 5000 applicants at a time. If they are reviewing a batch of 100 applicants at a given time, and see some applicants who seem to be in the lower level of competitiveness, pick maybe the top 30... reject the 70 right then, and move on. That way, at least the 30 from that group has a better chance of getting remembered fairly (since there are less of them now) when their applications are being compared to the next batch.

Lastly, to be honest I had no idea NYU had a twitter update system going on. I think things like this are something they can email the applicants along with their confirmation email... Also, I had the impression that the "last interview date" set on websites aren't really set in stone. I think Duke added a few extra days at the end of their interview season to accommodate more people this year, for example.

PS - Sorry this debate got tagged onto the NYU thread. I don't mean to say anything against NYU really, but this is a topic I've been wanting to vent about for a while...

Really? You o realize we are talking thousands of applications.

Emails can be easily automated. No med school is manually writing/sending thousands of rejection emails. If they are, then they have my infinite respect.

FWIW I asked the admissions office back in October about when I would hear back if I was rejected pre-interview and they mentioned that I wouldn't hear back until around March.

It also clearly says on their website that interviews end in January.

That said, this process is very strenuous on most applicants and I agree that they could make it a little easier on applicants by communicating a little bit better. Make your suggestions in a polite email to the admissions office and hopefully you can make things better for future applicants.

i agree that nyu is one of the more transparent schools.

however, i also wish that they would at least reject me when they have already rejected me. i find it highly unlikely that they're going to suddenly change their schedule and schedule interviews for some of us who are still "on review". this just suggests to me that the schools aren't really "reviewing" us as much as they claim to.

Does NYU have merit scholarships? If so, do we have to apply for them and when do we find out? Loved the school but worried about the $$. Thanks!

This year they have two merit scholarships, which, if I am not mistaken, are full rides. From their FA Info sheet: "Students will automatically be considered for merit based scholarship based on the materials submitted as part of the admissions process. We do not have a separate application for students to complete."
