anyone talk to admissions recently that can confirm another acceptance release this week? And hopefully WL will be next week?

Just talked to admissions today 3/27. They expect to send out the rest of acceptances, waitlists and rejections all at once next week (4/2-4/6), with that friday 4/6 being the most likely result.

Ahhh, thank you...guess I can put it out of my mind this week...

Thanks for the update! I'm surprised you were able to get such a straight forward answer from them. Here's hoping for some good news next week :xf:

i'm already starting to study for the mcats again -.-. gotta prepare for the worst!

I asked when the decisions would all be released

Thank you for your email. All decisions will be communicated before April 20,
2012.

I interviewed in december, this is a really long process.

I also called the admissions office today. I was told that all acceptances have gone out, but that by 4/20 we will know about rejections or wait list decisions. The last email I got from u of a was the third Monday of March saying there was one more acceptance round... I never got another email after that but I am assuming based off what they told me today that was the last acceptance wave.

That was the last time I got an email also (Mar. 19th) and it did say there would be one more round!! =( What's going on!

i just got off the phone w/ admissions too. so sorely disappointed. all acceptances have indeed gone out. according to the admissions office, they combined the two round with their last acceptances, but it doesnt really make sense for me because they did send out the "still in consideration" email. for them to continue to extend the dates is one thing (just something we have to deal with), but for them to give us a false hope that there would be another round is somethin else :\

no anger whatsoever, but just a lot of frustration. this process sucks

Haha I'm withdrawing then. I don't want to wait around curious for a month to see whether I'm WL'd or rejected, I just had that distinct pleasure with Colorado. :luck: to all.

Some disappointing news today...to those who talked to admissions, did they say wait list/rejection decisions would be sent out ON the 20th or did they indicate that they may be sent out prior to that date?

They did not say that it would be ON april 20th, only to watch out for that day. It seemed to insinuate that it could happen before then, but I would guess it wouldn't be too much earlier than that day.

Anyone know if it's ranked like in the past? Or did they change it this year?

i think that is for all schools, so you aren't holding onto more than one acceptance

I thought the national deadline was 5/15?

It is for most schools. Schools that start classes early (before July 15 I think?) have a deadline of April 15. Not sure if this is the case for Tucson.

I heard (during the interview, from an admin) that the WL will be unranked this year. Don't quote me on it though.
Yes, that is true. Wish that weren't the case...it would make a huge difference to know if you were #5 on the wait list versus #90. Also, I know a couple people who were accepted last Friday...even though I know that previous posts had mentioned that all of the acceptances had already been given out...interesting

Anyone know what the attire for the Second look is going to be this weekend?

From the new student website: Attire is business casual. Please make sure you wear confortable, closed toe shoes since you'll be changing into scrubs for your UA COM Elective sessions.

If it's not ranked, how do they decide who gets in first? Do they accept by interview date?

Some schools do ongoing "holistic reviews" and/or select candidates from the WL that are similar to the student who turned down the offer (so as to maintain a similar class to the adcom's original decisions).

Agreed, although I have no specific insider knowledge. I assume this is especially true, so they don't go over the max for OOSers. I imagine they will accept applicants with similar profiles as spots get turned down to keep a diverse mix.

I can almost surely say it will have nothing to do with interview date other than it may be that some more highly qualified applicants were interviewed earlier, but I wouldn't assume that either.

Best of luck to all those waiting for the WL.

Also, welcome to all those coming to second look. I will be hanging out and sitting on a panel Friday, so PM me if you want to chat in person about anything.

I feel dumb, I definitely read that when I RSVP'd

Thanks

in state, 34MCAT, 3.7 GPA, first author on a paper published in a medical journal, worked in 2 biochem labs, volunteer work 1.5 yrs, shadowed 5 doctors for 40ish hours each, interviewers told me that i answered the question how they would have and they'd put in a good word for me

rejected

Rejected (31 MCAT, 3.85 GPA, Tons of ECs, Non-Trad)…I can't help but wonder how much the increased OOS percentage of acceptances has harmed Arizona in-state applicants this year. Oh well, I guess I get to focus more on the other schools where I am waitlisted.

Rejected. OOS. 3.2 undergraduate - 3.8 graduate (Ph.D. in neuroscience) - 33 MCAT - 3 first author papers (one in Science), some shadowing, lots of volunteering. I'm reapplying next year after increasing my clinical exposure.

Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those waitlisted!

Waitlist!

OOS/3.8+ sGPA & cGPA/32 MCAT/Several first author presentations & papers/5,000 hours paid clinical/1,000 hours volunteer clinical/most or all of my MMI evaluators made comments about how well I did/accomplished musician/created a health student organization and involved the community in developing future health professionals....

Anyone know how long the wait list is this year?

Here is the waitlist graph posted last year. It looked like last year, they got close to 80 (about 78) by Orientation:

Also, anyone know how long the waitlist usually is each year (or this year specifically)? It'd be nice to know what our chances look like...especially since UA-Tucson isn't giving out WL rankings this year....

EDIT:

Chart including last year...

GL to all those WLers! With the OOS percentage and unranked WL this year, I don't know how predictive the past graphs have been, but there is definitely hope! Looking forward to seeing some of you at second look.

If anything, an increase in OOS applicants should result in MORE waitlisted applicants being accepted. Unless, of course, the school over-accepted to compensate for this, but that would seem unlikely their first year with such a change since they would have no idea how many to over-accept. Anyone know -- does UA overfill their class to begin with?

Just FYI, Got word that they sent out acceptances to ~150 students this year, so they overfilled by ~+35 students compared to last year . This is the first year they have done this and it is mainly due to the fact that waitlist went up so high past couple of years and many had to wait till june/july to find out. Also even though the cap for out of state went up to 50%, apparently they changed the rules for admissions this year, saying that they SHOULD NOT consider out of state as a factor when considering applicants, so the 50% rule is not strictly enforced. So considering all this it will be very difficult to say if getting waitlisted this year is similar to previous years, since they have changed the process a bit this year. Hopefully many who were waitlisted in this forum gets in! Good luck!

P.S. - main reason the admissions committee did not consider out of state as a factor is due to the fact that they had a separate committee screening applicants for interview (who do take out of state into account), so if you got an interview it really doesnt matter if you are IS or OOS, in terms of consideration.

Thanks for the info! So residency just plain doesn't matter this year? That's interesting... I would have thought at least some preference was given to AZ residents, although admittedly, I don't mind (being OOS) but it sucks for all you AZ residents!

It sounds like worst-case scenario would be that instead of them going 50-80 deep on the waitlist, it'll likely be closely to 15-50. Of course, with the increase in OOS acceptances offered, they will also likely get significantly lower yield. I know comparable schools (public, similar ranking, also accepting 25-50% OOS) have to make ~1.2-1.4 times the number of offers per seat for OOS matriculants as they do for IS matriculants. With UA increasing their percent OOS, this could increase the number of offers they must make by as much as 10-20%, which would basically take care of the 35 extra students, putting us right back where we started.... Of course, that's all conjecture because we don't know what percentage they will actually offer to OOS. At 50% of the class, we would anticipate about a 5-20% increase, since UA has not fully utilized their 25% OOS in the past. (Last year, the class was about 12% OOS.) However, whether this is due to post-waitlist acceptances or actual offers is unknown because UA does not release its final acceptance numbers to US News.

Btw, is is possible to declare residency in AZ post-matriculation if OOS prior? I saw something about not waiting a year if you're military. This seems to imply it is possible to become an AZ resident 1 year after matriculating....

Just to clarify, out of state residency does matter in screening for interviews (separate committee from the subcommittee that reviews the applicants for interviews), where they look at your stats (with cut offs higher for OOS than IS), secondary essays and your ties to Arizona if OOS. Its only after the interview invites are given out, do the subcommittee review all applicants to send out acceptances. (They are not supposed to consider IS or OOS, since it was already done pre-interview). So the positives of that is if you are OOS and you got an interview, then you are not at an disadvantage compared to IS in terms of consideration, but the good news for IS applicants is that it is much harder for an OOS applicant to get an interview than IS applicant.

The reason UA-Tucson never met the 25% OOS criteria in the past is because they used to have ranked waitlist, so many OOS who dropped out were replaced by IS applicants so UACOM had ~10 students being OOS. With the recent state budget cuts and the recent tuition hike by ABOR, UA increased IS tuition for medschool by $1000 and OOS tuition to 46-47K (used to be 42K when they first accepted OOS students). So because of that UA is hoping to have 50% OOS students this year, so that they dont have to hike the IS tuition even more in the future and at the same time get adequate funding for the school. I suspect that eventually UA-Tucson will adopt the UA-phoenix WL method where they have separate WL for IS and OOS, so that they can match the 50% quota. However they aren't doing that this year, so most likely the class of 2016 will have OOS student % far lower than that percentage.

Btw, is is possible to declare residency in AZ post-matriculation if OOS prior? I saw something about not waiting a year if you're military. This seems to imply it is possible to become an AZ resident 1 year after matriculating....

Yes it possible to switch residency in AZ, usually after living here for a year (so you pay OOS tuition the first year). A couple of my friends did that (bought a house, or had a spouse who works in AZ etc.), and its generally easier to do it here than in other states. You are right that if you are in the military there is an option where you pay in state tuition regardless of the school you get into, although I dont know the details of it. Also if you are in the military you can apply to the HPSP program where you get a tuition waiver and extra money, if you do a residency with them and commit to working with them for a few years. But as I mentioned above, U of A wants OOS to pay OOS tuition as long as they can, so that they get more money. I know that both ASU and U of A are pushing the arizona legislature to make getting IS residency harder so that they are not in a financial hole in the future and they dont have to raise IS tuition so often. Don't know if that going to happen, but its not a bad idea to try to get IS residency as soon as you can if you plan on going to school here, since it might be harder in the future.

Hope everybody had a good time at Second Look today - bummed that I had to miss it and the get together last night.

Quick question. Did anybody talk to the financial aid people or did they mention it in the talks today about when we will find out about our financial aid packages?

Blast! I knew I had forgotten something. I had wanted to talk to them as well. Bummer you couldn't make it though, it was nice to meet all my cohorts for the next 4 years!

I wasn't able to make it to the second look weekend, but I did e-mail the financial aid people and asked when we were to expect our financial aid information. They told me that we should be expecting our financial aid awards in the mail along with a certificate at the end of May.

End of May? Isn't the deadline to decide May 15th? It's not right to get the financial information AFTER the deadline - did I misunderstand something?

A certificate? For what?

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist. One of the many bummers with an un-ranked list is that we are robbed of epic comebacks a la DorthyMantooth last year.

Bahaha DorthyMantooth was EPIC indeed last year. There was so much good karma flowing as that WL kept ticking down.

I don't want to overstep, and definitely check with financial aid to confirm any of this, but I wanted to offer my take for clarity if you are trying to make a decision based on finances. Let's face, any way you slice it, this is an expensive venture, unless you are lucky to be independently wealthy. At least last year, the grants/scholarships were offered at the time of acceptances. Unfortunately, the rest of the financial aid award is a combination of loans. There are some med school scholarships that you apply for separately, but sometimes those decisions are not made until way after the deadline. The federal subsidized loans are no longer available to med students, so you can pretty much guess what your award package is going to look like. Just look at the cost of attendance from last year, subtract your grant, and assume the rest will all be unsubsidized loans. That will give you a ballpark figure anyway. Again, check with them, but that's a decent estimate.
