Been complete here for months >3.6/>34 with no communication. I live in Tempe and UofA is a top choice for me....so confusing :/ Hopefully the new year brings an interview invite. Anybody had luck with update letters or the sort??

Thanks and good luck!

Any current UA-Tucson students willing to answer a few questions?
1.Are lectures mandatory? If not, are they available via video or audio recordings in a timely fashion (i.e. later that day)?
2.How much mandatory attendance is required during an average week?
3.Are powerpoints and/or lecture handouts provided for each lecture? Are learning objectives clearly stated and concise?
4.How often are tests given? Are they NBME-style exams or written by each individual professors?
5.How much time off is there between the end of 2nd year and the beginning of 3rd year?
6.Are there any elective rotations available during 3rd year? How much elective time/unstructured rotations are available during 4th year?
Thanks!

I will give it a shot....
1.Most lectures are not mandatory. A few are, but they are rare. Almost all lectures are podcasted and available that day. There are a few cases where the lectures are not podcasted, but they tell you clearly beforehand that they will not be available. I podcast exclusively and have had no problems.
2. Weekly mandatory attendance is generally 3-4 hours of case-based instruction, 2 hours of team learning and 4 hours of Societies, plus any exams/quizzes.
3. Yes, yes and yes. There are both notes and power points with clear objectives for each class. Most people rely on the notes/syllabus and supplement with power points.
4. Depends on the block. For example, neuro had 3 quizzes and a final, every two weeks to cover an 8-9 week block. As we move through years 1 and 2 though, exams get further apart, so it is hard to give a precise answer. Some are NMBE type questions, and some are written by professors. It also depends on the Learning Obj being tested - sometimes it is just name what the arrow is pointing to. There are tons of practice questions, so you have a good idea of what the questions will look like. There are always board review books if you want more questions.
5. Not much. I believe you can pull up the calendars on the website to see exact dates, but you don't have enough time to do much more than have a short vacation (not time for research project, etc.)
6. There are some electives 3rd year, but obviously your schedule is more restricted to meet requirements. 4th year can be really tailored to your interest with lots of free time, especially if you build up time off with electives prior to 4th year.

OK - I am sure that is clear as mud, so feel free to ask additional questions and I will try and answer them.

Another question for current students:

Are all of the third and fourth year rotations done at UMC? Or, are they spread out across Kino, TMC, St. Mary's, etc?

Thanks!

A lot of it depends on what you want. Many people choose to do some away rotations, even to sites where they may want to pursue a residency (out of area/state) There is also the option, at least currently, to do rotations in Phoenix. IMO - going to some different sites gives you a good experience - you get exposure to various environments, programs, etc. But, UMC has the capacity for the rotations, but you can be fairly sure you will land outside of the hospital walls for clinic or something. P.S. Kino is now UMC - South (we have just been seeing some nice new signage around both campuses 😉 )

Again, let me know if that answered your question.

Awesome, thanks for all the insight Limetime. Totally answered my question, too.

I've got a few more if you don't mind 🙂

1) Is the Medical School Research Program generally the avenue that med students use to initially arrange research opportunities? http://www.msrp.medicine.arizona.edu/
2) Do you find the societies format useful, a waste of time, or just part of the UofA experience?
3) Are tests computerized or paper form? Do you have any flexibility for when you take exams (as opposed to Phoenix who said you can take most exams when you feel ready, either Fri/Sat/Sun)?
4) I'm a bit concerned about the move to iPads for notes, etc - I know it isn't mandatory to have one, but do you think all the bugs are worked out of the initial rollout and are the iPads well received by students?

Thank you very much!

Any U of A-Tucson med students (or anyone else in the area) willing to host a male applicant the night of Jan. 19 (for a Jan. 20 interview)? I am certainly willing to put some money down and such. PM me if you might be willing. Thanks!

I am glad I can help out.
1. It is a great avenue, but I cannot say it is how everyone finds their research. Some people just find a clinician or researcher they click with or a project they are interested in and initiate it themselves. There is not a problem finding research projects. Generally, the research distinction track advisor will meet with you, discuss your interests, and find a project that fits well, if you have not found it on your own. Sometimes, she has sent students abroad or to other facilities for some really cool projects. Basically, I am saying there are plenty of resources.
2. I find Societies very useful, in my opinion. First, you have a faculty physician that is your mentor for four years. I love my group and learning H&P in our small group. I think it is something you put off, since it seems that exams always take precedence, but you learn a ton in Societies. I think a lot of it is about attitude and what you put into it. We see real patients in the hospital right away, which is scary and really cool at the same time. By the time you are a 3rd year, you feel comfortable taking an H&P, writing it up, presenting, etc, but also thinking like a clinician, reviewing tests, etc.
3. All of the exams are on computers (except lab practical). There is no flexibility on exam times. I don't think this is really that much of a drawback though. They are pretty good about scheduling midterms on Mondays and finals towards the end of the week to maximize your study time. In all honesty, you feel that you just want to take the test and move on.
4. For iPads, I am one of the few that uses the iPad exclusively. Many people in my class ended up buying the notes in paper form. I don't think it is much about kinks as it is how comfortable you are with the technology. There are also awesome flash card apps, etc. Plus you can always look up a drug or something if you can't remember something. I love reading my notes and highlighting on the iPad, plus, I have everything with me all the time. I listen to podcasts on my laptop just so the slides are bigger, but you can do that on the iPad too. In fairness, I was used to being paperless in previous work/school experiences, so it wasn't such a transition for me. Use whichever tool is best for you. If paper notes work, use them. Like the iPad, use it. I think as the whole hospital progresses with iPads, I imagine it will get even better for clinical years, but that is just my guess.

I hope that helped - let me know if there is anything else.

Thanks again, Limetime. Your answers helped a ton. When I think of anything else, I will certainly not hesitate to ask.

Limetime, is it possible to be involved in more than one distinction track at once? for example, CUP + BIG + Rural + Research. thanks!

Got another one for you Limetime:

Since UofA uses P/F, are students internally ranked? If so, are students able to see where they stand compared to peers (for AOA purposes, etc)?

Thanks again!

Yes, you can be involved in more than one distinction track. The limiting factor eventually becomes your time. I think the two that may be more difficult would be Rural + Research, just because you only have so much time in the summer to do projects, but then again, if you creative, I am sure you can do it. CUP is probably the easiest to integrate with other tracks, as it is really easy to build up CUP hours, since there are so many different opportunities. Even if you aren't interested in the distinction track for CUP, I would highly suggest getting involved and just trying out some of the projects. It seems everyone finds them really wonderful experiences.

I hope that helped and GL!

Ahhh, this is an interesting one. I can speak to how our class is, but I believe the rules are being changed for next year. You easily see your grade as a percentage compared to the average for the class, so that gives you some idea where you stand. For my class, we will have the option to include a graph of our scores for each block as compared to the class average with our Dean's letter. I believe that future classes will not have this opportunity, so there will basically be no distinction. Again, I am not sure this has been solidified, so I can only speak as to what I have heard. Here, AOA is also not just a grade rank cutoff, so it wouldn't necessarily help you for sure even if you could see a rank.

Here are my personal thoughts: You get a really good feeling for where you stand. People that agonize over every missed point on an exam make themselves crazy. Do the best you can. AOA will come or it won't. Rock your boards. Excel in your clinicals, so you get personalized comments and letters of reference - those will speak volumes.

I hope that helps - GL!

xxx erased a post I found the answer to. Sorry

anyone interviewing on the 10th interested in meeting up on Monday to take a look around campus? Hit me up!

Hey guys! Looking for a bit of advice here: I was accepted to the phoenix campus a few months ago. I am OOS and I sent Tucson an in the area email back when I interviewed and received no response then. I was however offered an interview today. Would there by any reason for me to take Tucson over Phoenix? I am a little tight on budget and if I could save the money then it would be best. But if if it is worth it for me to go then I will. Thanks guys!

when you get the ipad, what does it come loaded with? Any medical apps, or just class notes?

when you get the ipad, what does it come loaded with? Any medical apps, or just class notes?

This year, it came loaded with iAnnotate. There were not any medical apps preloaded, but there were a lot of deals on medical apps at the beginning of the year for M1s from various vendors (starting at free 🙂 for anatomy flashcards, etc.) They are currently reviewing apps, so this may change as they decide what is best for student use longitudinally. When you get accepted and join the iPad program, you will be sent a link to a specific iPad page, where there are the apps, reviews, support, etc.

As for class notes, everything is uploaded to AZMed, where you can download it or upload it to Dropbox. I recommend not downloading all of them to your iPad, as it is a lot of data. At orientation, they link your iAnnotate to your dropbox, so you can keep everything in Dropbox, then download the notes you want to read at any one time, highlight, then sync them back so all the data isn't just sitting on your iPad. The same goes for the podcasts. I keep everything in Dropbox and download it as I need it. That way, you always have your notes up to date, whether on your laptop, iPad or any computer. This works really really well for me, but I am sure there are other strategies as well.

Let me know if you want any more details.

is it necessary to have a laptop as well as the ipad, or just the ipad is sufficient? thanks!

is it necessary to have a laptop as well as the ipad, or just the ipad is sufficient? thanks!

You are required to have a laptop with the minimum specs for exams, since IT installs the exam software on your laptop at the beginning of the year, and you take all your exams on own laptop. Other than that, you can surely do fine with a iPad. I use a combination of both. It is a pain to type up and H&P in an iPad unless you buy the full sized keyboard and word processing app for your iPad. The school also gives you a free copy of Office for Mac or PC, so you don't have to buy it. A laptop cost is included in your first semester financial aid.

Was one of those that was first rejected then sent a secondary later.

Interview invite 1/6
Interview on 2/11

Is this the last day to interview? Are my chances of being put on the waitlist higher because of my late interview?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your interview. You definitely have a chance of being admitted directly. I am not sure what the last interview date is, but they keep spots open and don't do final round of acceptances until after all interviews are finished, so don't give up hope! I know people that interviewed late and got in regular acceptance. Also, the WL generally goes pretty deep, so there is plenty of hope there as well.

Best of luck on your interview!

thanks Limetime. do you know when the financial aid page will be up?

Hmmm I wonder when the next 4 rounds of acceptances are... I wish there were more concrete dates than sometime in Jan., sometime in Feb. etc.

wooot interview set for 2/11 (a Sat). I'm OOS from east coast, 3.1 gpa, 37 mcat (I grew up in AZ though). So I'm guessing whatever interview cut-offs being mentioned aren't absolute as I was not screened out.

How does the campus look, is it very urban? Also is it near the main U of A campus? The website isn't very detailed and I can't see much tbh.

ps. seems AZ doesn't accept update letters. Has anyone written a letter of intent post-interview though?

Congrats on your interview!

I really like the campus. The zoning (or lack thereof) in Tucson is really random, so the urban question is hard to answer. The campus is surrounded by large streets and there are businesses, but there are also neighborhoods and fun bars/restaurants. The medical complex (UMC, med school, nursing, pharmacy, biomed research are all together on one side of a main street. The undergrad, stadiums, etc are on the other side. IMO, things are pretty well laid out. The med school is attached to UMC, so if you see the hospital on a map, you know where the med school is. I would go to the main campus website - I am sure there are some pictures of campus. Plus, if you watched any of the Gabby Giffords news coverage this weekend, you may have seen some more views of campus.

Let me know if you have more specific questions. I am from the NW, so I am just loving the weather right now 🙂

Got an invite here after being put on the Hold status a few days ago!

Eh, I'd expect the first round to be coming up pretty soon-- the second sometime in the 20's of January... same pattern for Febuary.

Thoughts?

thanks =). last Fri (Jan 6th). do you know the approx accep rate post-interview?

Thanks alot for sharing! Yeah I'm from the NE (Philadelphia) so the weather is pretty variable/cold/dreary. Btw do you know roughly the acceptance rate post-interview? I understand they're reducing total # of interviews this yr + 50% OOS limit. Any ball park figure would help.

Also, anywhere we can find the match list results? I saw the google map destinations for last yr which was very helpful but is there more?

Right now U of A is my top choice as odd as it may sound for an OOS from the east. I like what I'm hearing and a nice change of scenery from living in the northeast the past 10yrs is due. plus I hear U of A girls are cute hehe

I will try and find the match list. I believe I saw it somewhere, but I can't place it off the top of my head. If I find it, I will post a link. Did you go back through the match list threads from last spring? I know people were posting lists from various schools.

I also really can't say about post-interview acceptance. I think that it would only be better than in past years if you get an interview, since the number of interviews decreased. I am not sure how many total acceptances they hand out to fill the class. I do know the WL have gone deep in the past years (into the 70's), but that could also change I suppose with the new rules. I am sorry I can't give you a number. I would look at it favorably that you got an interview as an OOS and hope that it goes well.

You are very welcome. The sunshine is wonderful. It still throws me off to be wearing sandals to class in January. I don't think it sounds odd the UA your first choice. I was the same way. As for cute girls, I may be partial to my fellow UA ladies...jk...but you would have to ask a guy for that advice 😉

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.

Hey Limetime, I've got another question for you:

Does the tuition change by year? IE: Are 3rd/4th year cheaper than 1st/2nd (I've heard of this at other schools and couldn't find any info on UofA)

Thanks again for answering all of our questions -- it has been extremely helpful.

No worries - I am glad to help. I have upperclass students that I ask things all the time - I look at as paying it forward 🙂

Yes, tuition changes every year, but not for the better 🙁. It just goes up. There aren't any differences for MSI/II and MSIII/IV. I guess you could think of it as being cheaper per hour of education...jk. It is a great idea, and if someone could convince them of this, all our loan statements would he thankful 😉

Feel free to ask away!

Thanks, Limetime.

Question: Obviously it depends on the individual, but does UofA have any sort of reputation for being generous with grants to offset tuition? Or, is the consensus that it will be straight loans for most people?

Thanks again!

Well, they are generous in the fact that most everyone gets a small grant ($1000). There are some larger ($5000) grants as well. Realistically, 1K isn't that much in the grand scheme of the cost of education, but any free money is nice to have. Most people go almost entirely loans (unless they are particularly fortunate to have some family help, working spouse or something to defray costs). There are some nice outside scholarships, and the College of Medicine also offers scholarships, so I would definitely fill out the COM scholarship application. They aren't grants in the way undergrad grants were a part of your package, they are free money!

Also, just FYI, I would start paying attention to the Medicare funding issues and graduate medical education funding policies at the national level. As it currently looks, they are cutting federal funding for Grad loans, which are the nice, low interest public loans that we all get as first line of financial aid. So, private loans would go up next year if this is the case.

Lastly, the financial aid department here is wonderful. They really care about all of us, and will help you through all the administrative/financial aid issues you may have.

Hey Limetime,

Speaking in terms of tuition, if you're OOS, can you try to change state residency to Arizona and pay in-state tuition after one year or are you forced to pay OOS rate all 4 years?

Thank you for your insight throughout this thread and I'm really psyched to come next weekend (although this MMI thing will be a new thing for me)!

Well, you can try. I say that, because officially, you are supposed to pay OOS tuition all four years. There are some circumstances where they will change your status (like if you are married and your spouse is working in the state for a year.) I would give it shot, but also plan for it getting rejected. You can call the residency department. It goes through main campus rather the COM.

I hope that you enjoy your visit. The MMI is new, but don't stress out too much. Let me know if you have more questions. 🙂

Unfortunately, I highly doubt you'll be successful in changing residency after one year. I transferred to U of A as an undergrad from out of state, hoping to change residency after one year. I petitioned for residency after a year and even presented my case to a committee composed of people from the Arizona Board of Regents. What it boiled down to was that my purpose for moving to the state was to go to school. You can live in Arizona and pay taxes in Arizona for an indefinite period of time, but if you are going to school and you moved to the state to go to school, U of A will not consider you in-state. In order to obtain residency by the University's standards, you have to live and work in the state for a year without going to school at the U of A before they will consider you a resident. That's why I'm not in medical school right now. I'm applying for med school this year, even though I graduated in 2010 because I've worked in the state for over a year without going to school, so I'm now considered a resident.

Hey Limetime,

Do you recall when UofA makes a new student listserv or provides a class list so we can start arranging housing or roommates? Sorry, I know that is kind of a ridiculous question to ask in January -- just trying to plan ahead, ha.

Also, do you remember when you got financial aid info and were able to fill out the scholarship application?

Thanks!

Hey, there is nothing wrong with being optimistic and prepared 😉. I just checked my email from last year. It looks like they started to send out the information in April. They have a website that has all the forms and deadlines you need to submit everything. The scholarship was available in May I believe. They don't make decisions on the COM scholarships until closer to class beginning, so you can't necessarily use that to make a decision about which school to attend, if you are waiting on finances.

Actually, before the school set up our class listserv, there were a lot of people on the class FB page. I know that is how some people found roommates. We still use it for most of our informal communication, since the listserv is public (that means EVERYONE, deans, docs etc. can see your kegger invite if you use the listserv). Just a little word of advice. We started a FB as soon as a few people were accepted and it grew quickly around March/April when the class was getting finalized.

Thanks for the info! I figured that was the case, but I just happened to know some states where you can make a change after your first year. I'm a reapp so I'm just fortunate at this point to have these opportunities and I'll have to just suck it up and pay the extra money if I'm fortunate to get into a school like U of A.

For Limetime or anyone else, I got an agenda of the interview day for next weekend and it says that the day starts at 8 am and ends at 10:30 am after the MMIs. I do have a Saturday interview; do they not have a student tour/lunch for Saturday interviews? What's the schedule for interview day supposed to be like? It's kind of disappointing even though I might end up just driving up to campus the day before if that ends up being the case.

I just looked at an email from admissions recruiting students to attend interview sessions. The weekend date is included, and it looks like the normal schedule. I think instead of a lunch, if you are in the AM session, you have a meet and greet with students before your interview, just as you would on any other day. The PM session starts with the student lunch. I am just going off what I see and what I am assuming, but I think your experience should be pretty similar to all other sessions. I hope you have a good visit to campus!

Thanks! On the e-mail, it said Applicant Check-In from 7:30-8, Welcome from 8-8:25, and MMI from 8:30-10:15. Is that what the typical schedule looks like?

From what I can tell, that is the normal schedule. Some other applicants may be able to confirm that, but I have the morning student welcome as always having us get be there from 7:50 - 8:30, so that would seem consistent with your schedule. I just see our schedules, but the weekend one does not look any different on our end.

For financial aid for the UA...do we need to insert our parents tax information into the FAFSA? My understanding is that for the FAFSA (for UA, anyway) you don't, but later on when you fill out the COM scholarship application we do have to include our parents info. Does this sound right?

I was under the impression that you had to list your parents tax info if you were claimed as a dependent on their taxes for the year in question. Not sure if thats correct though.

I emailed 5 schools asking if I should put my parents tax info on the fafsa. 4 schools emailed me back saying i do not have to put parent info. the only school that didnt reply was U of A Tucson, however Phoenix said I dont need the parent info. Its prolly the same for Tucson.

The Tucson FA team was at a conference last week. They'll be back on Tuesday.

Edit: Jan 18th - they are back and responded to my email. the FA page will hopefully be up by mid Feb.

I'm on pre-interview hold. I'm just wondering if anyone knows how often people end up getting an interview after being put on hold. Are they open to pre-interview update letters?
