I saw that in 2008, Irvine only interviewed 13 out of 813 OOS applicants in the MSAR, so I'm guessing I don't have a huge shot there. does anyone know from personal experience if there are OOS applicants interviewing here much at all?

We have plenty OOS applicants who interview. While it might seem counterintuitive, there is no preference given to IS applicants.

While I'm not privy to the inner working of admissions, I don't agree with this simply based on experience and the fact that our entire class minus one was considered in state at the beginning of first year. And that one individual was able to eventually gain in state status due to going to school and living in So Cal for the last several years. I believe the same can be said for the class above us and the class above that one. It is very rare to see someone who isn't considered in state. I think we interview plenty of people who went to OOS schools for undergrad. But most have some other tie to California.

agreed. we have one OOS classmate and she is md/phd. Altho how many people interview from OOS and how many people attend from OOS are different questions. I will say tho that there were 0 out of state applicants on my interview day, and when i was invovled with the interview days as a first and 2nd year i never personally met an OOS applicant (altho im sure that they exist).

Haven't received any emails regarding the status of my application. Just checked the status page and it changed today to Interview not awarded:

"Regrettably due to a very large competitive applicant pool we are unable to advance you through the admissions process. We wish you the best in your future endeavors."

Good luck everyone,

Sorry to hear that !!!
When were you complete?

Is there a facebook group or something set up for accepted applicants to network/discuss housing?

Someone in the soon-to-be second year class usually starts one around May or early summer. If you haven't been able to locate one yet and want to start networking now, why not take the initiative to start it yourself?

Another adcom meeting today.. md/phd adcom meeting happened today also. Last time it was about a week post-meeting before the next in line heard back? :luck::luck:

Is there still hope for people on the interview alternate list?? praying for an interview :scared:

Has UCI offered any scholarships yet? If not, does anybody know when they MAY do that (knowing that these are rare)? Is it with the financial aid package?

Anybody know if UCI is receptive to letters of interest? I was placed on the wait list after interviewing.

In the past, you were notified of your scholarships when you got your financial aid package. If the money will help you decide, call the financial office for an approximate date/timeline when they'll have that info available

of course. i dont know of a school that would look poorly upon you telling them that you were intersted in them. You could also turn it in to an update letter if anything has changed with your app, if youve started any new activities, LORs, etc. There a few people in my class that have appealed/wrote LORs after being rejected pre interview, then getting interviewed and being waitlisted, then finally getting pulled off the waitlist. Obviously not everyone who writes a letter will get pulled off, but its not going to hurt.

Ok thanks... only reason I ask is because I heard UCI doesn't like update letters, but I guess I was mistaken.

When I was there Dr. Petersen said they didn't want update letters, but they didn't mind interest letters

there you go! I would error on side of caution and make it sound like more of an interest letter. They must have changed things since i went through - when I did they encouraged LORs/update letter. good luck!

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time reader of these forums, and I sincerely wish everyone the best of luck through their application process.

I'm just wondering to whom we address a LOI to UC Irvine? And did you submit it to the email provided on the website, [email protected]?

Thanks.

just got rejected, pre-interview

my life is sad now 🙁

good luck to everyone else

Are people getting rejected pre-interview via email or through checking their status on the website?

I have been addressing my LOI's to the admissions committee or the associate dean of admissions. I think either one is acceptable. As far as sending the e-mail, give the office of admissions a call and ask them - it differs between schools.

Just checked my status this morning, alternate list =(. Anyone know if it gets any movement?

Sorry post interview. I interviewed on Jan 23rd

My status page still reads "Under Review". Is that good or bad?

I asked admissions and they said it didn't imply anything and that you just need to keep checking your status =\. Frustrating for you all I know..

I check once a day lol hoping for good news. It's kinda depressing when I'm passing through campus to visit my old lab on the medical campus and I see that big brand new medical education building. And I scream out "WHY NOT ME?!" haha. or when I'm passing by the medical center on the 5, and I take a big long stare.

I think because of a well-circulated story about an SDNer writing several LOI and update letters and getting in, it inspired legions of other SDNers to do the same. 😛 Admissions thus had to deal with all of that. Dr. Peterson now tells applicants specifically not to write letters without a very good reason.

haha, got it.

any sort of "survival guide" out there for us newcomers to look at? Thanks!!

On my status page it says my app has been reviewed and has been placed on the interview alternate list.

Thank you! My interview date is 3/14/12. the only other option is 4/20/12.
