Got a call yesterday for an interview!

Man, now I am starting to worry. I completed submission on 8/28 and have been EFI for about two weeks now. I am 3.79 GPA, 3.8 BCPM, 32O MCAT, and FL resident. Wish there was something I could do, but its just a waiting game from here on out. Congrats to those who already got interviews!

You shouldn't worry too much. I submitted the day after they released the secondary to me (some time in late June/early July?), and haven't heard anything. Granted, your GPA is much better...

Hang in there :luck:

Anyone know the OOS Interview/Acceptance rates?

For the first year class (2009-2010):

IS - 185 interviewed, 31 matriculated (1 in 5) (75% of class)
OOS - 48 interviewed, 10 matriculated (1 in 5) (25% of class)

I don't have the new MSAR but from the UCF COM website: the 2010-2011 class had 15 IS out of 60 matriculants... it seems pretty consistent with the 25% OOS

Does anyone have any insight about how these interviews go/what kinds of questions are asked?

Sorry if I am being nosy, but those who most recently received an interview invite, could I know your MCAT and GPA please? I thought I was a shoo-in for an interview invite from UCF, and I have been EFI for over a month now. Kinda getting worried. Thank you!

If there is ONE thing I have learned in applying for medical school, it's that there are no such things as a shoo-in...I've been waiting here thinking I had a realistic shot at an interview while at Miami I figured that was a long shot but right now, I have an interview at Miami while I'm still stuck at EFI here so go figure....hopefully that will change soon:xf:

All interviewees get asked the same questions. There are two interviewers; you get a half-hour with each. The interviews were pretty relaxed. Definitely check out the interview feedback section for UCF.

I'm sorry, where is this section?

oh...my...god....this link just made me so happy!!!

Could someone speak to their "ideal applicant?" Since I'm OOS, I'm trying to get a feel for the student environment they're trying to create--being in a cooperative atmosphere where everyone wants each other to do well is one of the most important things to me (and one of the reasons why I'm so unhappy with my state schools). I was toying with the idea of asking REL...do you think that that would be inappropriate?

He posted this about my question earlier in the cycle, but I am also kind of interested in a student perspective:

Visit www.med.ucf.edu/admissions and select enrolled classes to see the profiles of the first two classes. The med city is raising up all around us with hospitals, research, housing, retail, and everthing needed to make this a "go to" place for health care in the near future. We will admit up to 25% of each class from non-Florida residents because that type of diversity helps to enrich the total class in all ways, so up to 25 of our 100 member class that enters in August 2012 could be non-Florida. Our students have created neary 20 interest groups, one of the most popular is the rural health interest groups -- they have been doing great things in our short two-year history. We want to see applicants that convince us that they are not an academic liability, then we look strongly at the motivations for medicine and humanity etc. in an attempt to evaluate those that are in "it" for others --- those who give to others and come from diverse background make a classroom a place of collaboration among peers.

When I visited, my impression was that they really want a unique group of students who are there to pursue their individual dreams and doing everything to help each other achieve just that. I LOVED this school (and am hoping for good news in just over a week) because of the cooperative environment the school encourages and how the school isn't looking to push you in one specific career direction (i.e. primary care or research). They're not looking for a "cookie-cutter" applicant. Everyone I interviewed with had a unique story. If they chose to interview you, they found something interesting about you- highlight what makes you an individual and how that can contribute to the overall class. good luck!

anyone know if interviewing later rather than earlier hurts chances?

I have been checking my phone incessantly. No love as of yet...🙁.

It's my understanding that the only way for an OOS student to get in-state tuition is to get married to a Florida resident. Would that still apply for someone who is already married and moves to Florida with his/her spouse and the spouse obtains Florida residency?
If I go to Florida for med school, my wife (who works full time) would come with me and get a full-time job there. And presumably after one year she could get classified as a Florida resident. Ergo, I would technically be married to a Florida resident. So would I qualify for in-state tuition at that point?
Anyone familiar with this kind of scenario?

That's a very interesting situation...I've dealt with alot of in and out of state stuff but not that. I recommend you give UCF COM's financial aid office a call and ask- they are super helpful about all sorts of situations, even if you don't end up going there.

In this scenario, since your wife is not a Florida resident when you begin your program, even though she may regain her residency in a year, you will be a non-Florida resident for the duration of your program. It has to do with state residency status at the point of matriculation into an academic program. You can become Florida residents while you are in the program, just not for tuition purposes.

A friend of mine with identical stats got the invite from UCF about 2 weeks ago even though I submitted way before him (and was EFI a week or two before him). Should I assume that I've been passed on for now, or are the EFI applicants not reviewed necessarily in order?

Just an update for those who interviewed and knew that your committee "admit" day was today. We are on schedule as discussed during your visit. The Admissions Committee did meet tonight and they did select applicants for acceptance so we, like you, are awaiting October 16th. As you know I will be calling each of you and about 1/3 will get great news at that time. Cheers to all!!

It is not about being reviewed in order or not in order. Do not be so stressed unless its the end of the year and you've not gotten an interview. I was in EFI for months and months until like late Nov when I got an invite. I have friends who I think in some ways have better stats than me and got interview invites long after me at the end of the year. I'm talking very end of the year like some of the last interview dates. some of those students still got in above me and some got waitlisted and then in and some got waitlisted but withdrew before finding out. So do not stress so much.

These things are not divulged in great detail for professional reasons but I would not stress. There is still hope if the interview season is not up. BTW they judge everything not just numbers in determining who they interview and again after you interview. GOOD LUCK

Thanks Guju! I'm not stressed as much as wondering the methods/order of interview selection. Also, UCF is my top choice, so it's easy to get restless 🙂.

Another residency question: what if we were to defer for a year, and gain FL residency within that year? Then would we get in-state tuition?

Alternatively, is UCF a school that will give OOS students IS tuition after a year?

The state tightened up on the switching so once you matriculate as non-Florida you will remain OOS for the duration of your program. No program should be able to do what you ask any longer.

I need to make a correction here. I will be making all of the calls on MONDAY, October 17.....not SUNDAY, October 16.

Is it typical that ~1/3 of applicants from each interview day are accepted outright? Are you allowed to give us fractions on post-interview rejections and those who are put on "the list"? Or does it generally vary too much to do that?

How long did everyone sit in the File Complete-Ready For Review stage? I made sure to submit my secondary to UCF very quickly, within a day of receiving it, and have been sitting in this stage for almost 3 weeks. Any thoughts?

Anyone know approximately how many people get EFI and how many they are planning on interviewing this year? Yes- I realize this is a neurotic post haha but I am just curious.

It is probably too early to ask this, but does anyone know if UCF will be offering the $15K scholarships this year that they offered to OOS students last year? Or were those competitive, and not given to all OOS students automatically?

You should do a search into last year's thread and REL's posts in there. There's some statistics there of such. Just an FYI. Hope that helps. I'm too lazy to do the search. but look for the 2010-2011 thread and REL's posts like I said. He's given good statistics last year on there.

That is unless he's so kind to oblige you as he did for us last year. 😀

Good luck

A guesstimate this year will be about 800-1000 EFI; we intend to interview about 375.

We do intend to help the OOS students as much as possible considering that they help to diversify the class in many ways. In the past the scholarship committee did help them and I am of the opinion that it will continue. I suspect that the $15k you mentioned is on the high-end, but not too far off in general.

REL, as always, thank you for the time you spend with us--it is incredibly helpful and we value it highly! (Especially after a long workday!)

I am curious: ~How many of the 375 will be OOS interview offers?

I apologize for the many questions, I am just a tad unfamiliar with the intricacies of the admissions processes here!

I am curious: ~How many of the 375 will be OOS interview offers? -- Roughly 1/3 of those that we will interview will be OOS, so I guess that we can guess that ~125 OOS will be interviewed for no more than 25 seats.

Or does it generally vary too much to do that? --- There is variation here, there is no quota for accepting for each interview day. We will actually accept every other week since we only have 100 seats to fill and we do not plan to (invisibly) over-accept like most programs do. We will portion out the acceptances throughout the interview season so that all are interviewing for an open seat. Without a lot of agonizing detail, interview groups will be "scored/rated" at the admissions meeting; all will be placed on a list of those not yet accepted based on their rating; every other week the committee will select ~10 from that list for acceptance. We will not reject anyone who has interviewed early. Those who come to interview will receive details about how I will consistently communicate with them regarding the size of the list and their general zone on that list. Applicants should have enough information to have a clear understanding of what the final outcome is likely to be well before they get that call for acceptance or no acceptance. The committee has the final authority in the assembly of this list and can make adjustments as they deem necessary.

I apologize for the many questions, I am just a tad unfamiliar with the intricacies of the admissions processes here!

Hi All! I'm new to this thread but have an interview here next month. I was hoping someone who has already interviewed here could help me. I'm trying to book my flight home from Orlando and was wondering whether a 5:30pm flight would be cutting it too close? There is also a 6pm and a 6:30pm option but they are much less convenient. Anyone have any insight?

Thanks! 🙂

The interview day finishes around 4. The Homestay Committee may provide transportation to MCO. I made it to MCO at around 4:25 or 4:30pm. I know that getting through security at MCO can take forever sometimes, so you would have to factor that into your decision...

Well for the applicants waiting for my call. Let me tell you a story from an old Bill Cosby album (yes album).....a two album set, all sports stories. So one story was about a football coach who was doing the normal pre-game hyping, chanting, jumping, hollering, etc. So the whole team is frothing for the game, ooohhhhrrrrrraaaahhhhhh, heading for the door, ready to rampage onto the field!!!!!! When they got to the door, it was locked. Oh, how deflating.

So how does that apply to the "right now?" AMCAS is suffering an unusual outage which they have been feverishly trying to fix since early morning....I'm ready! You're ready! The door is locked!!! I'll call when technology catches up with us.

How long did it take for everyone's status to change from AORTA to something else?
