Anyone receive info on the Thursday night dinner they allude to on the website? Or any previous applicants know when that starts? I'm looking at a couple of flight options and don't know whether it's worth it to get the earlier one for this reason. Thanks!

The Thursday night dinner is new for this year's cycle. Basically, before your Friday interview, you'll have the opportunity to attend a dinner with fellow interviewees and current medical students, giving you a chance to meet/get to know everyone and ask any questions you might have about Michigan Med (plus free Pizza House! An Ann Arbor favorite). Certainly not mandatory, but if you can make it, it should be fun! 🙂

I submitted my application on 6/20 and so far no action has been taken. It says on my status page "AMCAS Application Received" and that's it. All of my materials are in. Is this normal? Shouldn't I be under review by now?

Hi Lbzak,

If everything has a check mark next to it (secondary, all your letters, fee paid) since June you may want to call. Are they waiting for MCAT scores or anything? My status went from AMCAS application received to under review within a day of everything being marked complete (which was at the end of July).

Good luck!

I think they answered your question on the twitter account!

Current Applicants: It could take an hour, a day, a week, a month or 4 months to get you under review and considered-Wish it were faster!

I wish they just accepted me already....or at least invited me for an interview.

Got it. Thanks for your help!

Edit: I actually just checked my status page and am now under review!

will there be student hosts for sept interview dates?

will there be student hosts for sept interview dates?

We recently got an email regarding registration to host applicants for fall term, winter term, or both. It doesn't say when it starts, but if I were to bet, I'd bet that they have it all set up for September interviewees.

Would it be counterproductive to speak about an important activity in my life (not mentioned in the rest of file) within the application update section? I just want to provide as much information to Michigan as possible so that they might consider giving me an interview.

It depends on the significance of the update. A lot of people use updates for awards, distinctions, publications, etc. If you are an avid rock collector, it probably won't sway the admissions committee one way or another.

so 2 questions, since its lateish in the cycle and U of Mich is big on the rolling admission thing is it pushing it to apply now, especially as an OOS applicant

regarding state residency, does anyone know the procedure for getting residency?

No, go ahead and apply! I would be more worried if you weren't complete before Sept 1st.

However, as far as I know, if you are OOS, you will stay OOS all four years (there may be some rare exceptions I'm not aware of).

Aww snap:

"GREAT news coming for all applicants in the next 72 hours!"

:luck:😍:luck:

Go ahead and apply! Yes, if you aren't a Michigan resident already, you won't be one any time soon or during the course of your medical school education.

on hold - bummer 👎

Michigan twitter update from the 72-hour post: "I'll have an important announcement-via twitter only- that will be of interest to all applicants Monday morning!"

More like "via twitter and SDN", heh. :meanie:

If it really is great news, I'll go ahead and guess that they're increasing the number of spots in the class. Or reimbursing our secondary fees. Or adding a combined degree w/ Hogwarts...

they delayed announcement....

Announcement is a new app:

"Announcing: We have deployed our UMMS "app"-real time updates, status checks, interview tips, etc. from your phone! In stores now! Free!"

It's called "M.D. Stat+" on Android

Indeed.

First impressions:
The load times are a bit long. The servers may not be optimized for this kind of access. On the whole, a vast improvement over browser-based admissions website access on smartphones, but does not seem to provide additional information (so you don't need it if you don't want it).

Also, I just noticed a rather alarming bug that has my status as "File Complete - Under Review" but then lists the description as "We have received notification that you wish to decline our admission offer." That should probably be fixed...

I downloaded it and logged in and it seems to still have a few bugs. My status says "under review" like it should but then under that status it says that I denied an admissions offer lol. They haven't even offered any admissions offers yet, so how could I deny one?!

I like it. A solid first attempt at their smartphone contingent. Presentation could use a little work, but c'mon--what other school is doing so much at this point to reach out to prospective students?

Would be cool if there were a way to check on student hosting, though.

lol for the description of my status it says: We have received notification that you wish to decline our admission offer. Best wishes for your future success.

Mine says "Your current status is: application screening completed. Your application has been withdrawn per your request. Best wishes for your future success."

definitely did not withdraw my application. hope its a technological glitch.

Edit: the app is only for iPhone and Android. Not blackberry.

really cool idea. I'm sure the bugs will be worked out with time. you have to give UM props for their innovation in admissions communication.

Dear UMMS Admission Committee,

Three rounds of :clap:applause:clap: for the being transparent in your admissions process; it helps alleviate the speculations of even the most neurotic SDNers. That said, many of us didn't have the numbers to yield automatic interviews but believe that we possess the necessary traits and experiences that would fit the medical education philosophy at UMMS.

Please send out more non-automatic interviews soon! :luck:

For the first secondary essay, did anyone have some overlap with one of their "Most Significant" activities from AMCAS?

I'm torn between elaborating upon one of the activities that I listed on AMCAS, or talking about something completely different. On one hand, the activity from AMCAS is something I'm really passionate about; on the other hand, I feel like I should be using this secondary to talk about another aspect of my personality that may not necessarily be evident from my primary application.

tl;dr
Should I treat the secondary as an extension of an AMCAS activity, or introduce something new?

does umich accept AP Credit for Bio if you take upper electives?

nvm, yes they do

I just expanded on the amcas activity, there's only so many different things you can write about or be passionate about.

Does anybody know how many candidates are accepted that interview during one of the first two interview dates?

Since you can schedule your own interview dates, this would only give you a limited view of early invitees' acceptance rates.

EDIT: TOP!

It was implied that the acceptance rate is higher for the earlier interviews, but we weren't given actual numbers - I imagine with Michigan being incredibly open, they'd have told us percentages if it's something they actually calculate.

my file has been under review for a long time (time period screened for anonymity). i know the umich website says the review process could potentially last months. I applied early. I am just afraid that the chances of an interview are getting more and more slim at the rate they're filling up. anybody have any insight?

here's my insight, but bare in mind that i have no qualifications at all to be saying this, just pure conjecture:

it seems like the interview offer rate has slowed down a bit since the initial offerings back in june and july. and i'm also on review still and it sounds like it is a lot better than being already put 'on hold'. so personally, i'm taking the "review" status to be a good thing, or a neutral thing at worse.

I agree. I looked through last year's thread; around ~August 19th, Michigan offered about 300/750 interviews. On the official tracker this year, it's around 188/750 as of August 10th. Only a few interviews have been given out since the 10th according to Twitter, so I would say no more than ~220/750 have been offered.

If you take away the auto-interviews, there are only a small number of non-auto interviews so far this cycle (relative to years past). I'm sure Michigan has their reasons, but I hope they're not just trying to poach high-stat applicants like WashU :meanie: Haha, but in all seriousness, us non-interviewees will just have to wait patiently and hope for the best :luck:
