Interview Invite! Ahhhh!

UMMS is my dream school, and I thought my statistics wouldn't be good enough to get me to the next step. To have the opportunity to interview at Michigan is something I am so excited for/proud of.

The invite made my week. (month?) (year?)

Congrats! it's my dream school as well! I hope to hear back! Are you IS/OSS?

Hi,

I have a gpa of 3.87 and science gpa of 3.78 and my mcat score was 33Q. I am going to apply to mostly mid tier schools like Tufts, BU, U of Vermont, Umass, etc in the spring. I was thinking about taking a shot at a one or two top schools like Johns Hopkins, Duke, U of Michigan, Stanford, Weill, etc. I was wondering of which of the top 10-15 schools is the least competitive or generally accepts a wider range of scores if you have good Ecs. I was also wondering if anybody knows if any of these schools are more favorable to accepting latino students with “lower” stats. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

An MD/PHD I know at my school had a friend get into WashU with something like a 32 I believe, but she had a very strong research background, and multiple notable publishings. Said MD/PHD student also apparently could have gotten into their MD/PHD program no less (she's also an amazingly brilliant researcher and a great person all around), but she knew that she would be pigeon holed into her PI's lab, or hurt her PI's feelings (yes she's that nice). Point is, research is important for these schools. A publishing(s) in science or nature will go a long way in getting you, and will be what gets the person with the 31 in.

For other people offered interview invites (recently), are your only possible dates way off in January!? Or is this just me?

The only possible dates I could choose from were in early December. Maybe those days have filled up already??

Either way, congrats on the invite!!!

I'm trying to provide an update through their "update my application" page but it doesn't seem to be working. Anyone else have this issue? And should I just send the update to their email?

EDIT: nvm

HOLY CATS do I love this school. I had such a great time at interview day. It would an honor to attend here.

From their twitter:

"AEC meeting underway..last candidate review was very brief--a "home run"--easy to determine to we'd love to have this person at Michigan!"

What a tease!! 😛 This waiting is going to really test my patience! ha ha

Last year I had already gotten an interview around this time (ultimately placed on lower tier of the waiting list). Nothing this year so far... I emailed to ask what was up and they gave me an ominous threat of a "final decision" if I wanted an immediate file review. Any ideas?

Latest twitter update..."AEC meeting concluded for MD candidates: 61% Admitted (wow!) 14% Defer and 25% Waitlist. Outcomes under review-will be reported on Nov. 11."

It's gonna be a long 9 days of waiting!

Agreed!!

Yeah, that sounds fairly ominous, I'd err on the side of patience (and caution). In a similar boat, though 1st time applicant. Keeping faith that no news is at least not bad news...

Heya, long time lurker here. Did you guys feel your stomachs flop when you saw that? I definitely did--going to be tough to wait for Nov 11! I loved this school, the interview day was absolutely incredible, and whoever mentioned the sense of enthusiasm had it spot on. It was infectious. I would be so thrilled to be accepted here!

hi! this is my first post on SDN 🙂

It seemed that earlier, some people were put on "hold". Does anyone know if UMich rejects people pre-interview during interview season? I have been complete for awhile, and was just wondering if "under review" really still means that I'm in the running still or not.

Ive been "under review" since 9/14. I dont know if that means im on hold or not... but i'd like to find out!

looking at the acceptance/deferral/waitlisted/rejection stats posted on the twitter, it seems that almost nobody has actually gotten rejected.

so impressive.

if we havent heard back yet thats bad news right...

Is anyone else interviewing on Nov. 18 and getting into Detroit airport on the afternoon / early evening of the 17th?

If so, I'm looking for people willing to split cab fare to Ann Arbor. There seem to be few good ways to get to the town besides cabs and the shuttle services ($30/person). If we could get a group of 3-4 people together, the cab could be more cost-efficient.

If you're interviewing on the 18th and are interested, please PM me.

do you know if you are interested in doing an MD/MPH at umich, if the MPH btwn the 2nd and 3rd year is free of cost...? or how that works out in general

yeah that's what I'm thinking... 🙁

It seemed earlier that people were getting "Hold" statuses or rejections, so maybe no news is good news? (or at least not bad news yet?)

It's bad news in any case because Michigan is so aggressive about rolling admissions. Spots in the class are filling up quickly, so simply by passively being shuffled along the odds get worse, even though nothing bad is actively happening.

HOPESOLO: Would you mind sharing your stats and complete date?

If we were told that our status pages would be updated on Nov 11 with the adcoms decision, is there any chance that they let the accepted applicants know any earlier? I know of some schools that say they update on one day, but call people the night before to accept them. Is there anything like this at U of M?

I'm going crazzzzzzyyyyyyyy, telllllllll usssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Please?

Agreed! Having a hard time focusing this week! Too excited!
I'm checking Director Ruiz's twitter, my status page, my email, and my mailbox obsessively. Yes, even the snail-mail box. Just in case...

Can it be Nov 11 already? Please? I'd like a semblance of a life back... 🙄

I get the feeling that they are waiting for it to be 11:11am on 11/11/11 to release decisions lol...that would be pretty awesome.

Just saw this on the UMich twitter page:

"UMichMedAdmiss UMich Med Admissions
The (almost certain) reduction in interview slots will come Pre-Thanksgiving and will (almost certainly) impact only Non-residents."

SO SCARED! :scared:

Accepted via e-mail! Status page hasn't changed yet though... EDIT: My status page has changed.

Just got an email--ACCEPTED!! :soexcited: Holy cow, I'm so excited!

I don't think the status pages are going to change until tomorrow, according to the twitter.

+1!! :biglove: I'm so blissed out right now! I feel like a goon, grinning ear to ear everywhere I go..

Congrats to the other people accepted today too!

So...I probably don't want to know the answer, but should we take it as a bad sign if we did not receive the acceptance email today?

Check your status page. Mine had been changed to Highly Desirable--December decision

:/ I hate waiting!

Nothing on this thread for five days?

There's been a decrease in interview offers for NR.

I've been under review for four months and my status has never changed from Under Review.

Don't lose hope though! The battle has just begun everyone.

The battle against the perpetual Under Review status has been going on for months now, I don't think it has "just begun" for most of us. +1 to the threads above this one....

+1. At Michigan, I think the battle is nearly over.

Has anyone else on hold been rejected/invited to an interview? I was put on hold in August and pretty much just treated it like a rejection. Since they decreased the number of NR interviews, I don't think my chances are great. Oh well.
