Can someone who interviewed there give a quick rundown of how the day went? I have no idea what to expect. I guess we start with an introduction and then go on a tour and finish with interviews according to the email. Did you guys wear your suits the entire time? It is blazing hot outside and I don't like the idea of walking around for a few hours outside in a suit, then going in for an interview all sweaty.

you'll find out in the morning if you have morning or afternoon interviews, and accordingly your tour will either be in the morning or afternoon. There will be an introduction with breakfast and lunch with medical students. It is super hot and you will sweat, just make sure to remove jacket when outside (you will have to go from building to building for interviews too). UTMB is really nice and laid back I really enjoyed my time, try not to stress about the process, remember everyone is in the same boat. They do their best to make sure you enjoy your time there. Good Luck 👍

Another question concerning the walking around outside thing:
They said it's okay to bring comfortable shoes for walking around. Does that mean running shoes are okay...?

There's only three times you need to have your jacket on. 1. when you walk in for the orientation, some of the admissions committee members are in that room so make sure to shake everyone's hand and thank them for the opportunity to interview at UTMB. 2. during your first interview 3. during your second interview. I had morning interviews - i took my jacket off when walking between buildings and then sat in the entrance of my interview building cooling off for 5 minutes before going into the interview. if you are in the afternoon they understand that you may be slightly sweaty already. you'll do great.

you must be from rural Texas.

you must be from rural Texas. the admissions/faculty/students/other interviewees won't take you seriously if you strap on your running shoes. so no running shoes are not okay. with that said, congrats on your interview and good luck.

haha no, I'm not from rural Texas. I was kidding about the running shoes--I wouldn't actually do that. But I'm not sure what type of "comfortable" shoes would be okay to bring. And thanks 🙂

A really nice pair of boots go great with a suit and are perfectly acceptable in Texas. They are way more comfortable than your standard dress shoe as well. I wore my black boots to my first interview and actually got a compliment from one of my interviewers.

Even for women? I was planning on wearing nice black flats to the interview, but they do kill my feet, so I was hoping to find a suitable suggestion that I could switch to for the tour. I'll survive if I can't find something else though 🙂

Note: You mean cowboy boots, right? I've never owned a pair in my life, so I don't know if I'd feel comfortable buying some to wear to interviews.

I'm switching to flats for the tour. Gotta start breaking them in, I don't wear them much, but they're preferable to wearing heels.

Boot are something that's okay, not something that's recommended or "nice to have"

what is the dress code for the night before social?

How long do you think it will take to get a confirmation email from UTMB if TMDSAS received my MCAT score 8/17? Thanks!

I have an interview here on 9/30 !!! I'm excited but I wish it wasn't during the week... I really don't want to miss class. Does anyone think it will still be warm enough to go to the beach??? hahaha. It is hotter than a mug in Dallas right now 👎

I don't think many schools interview on the weekends.

Anybody else interviewing here friday? Going to the social the night before?

I am interviewing this friday and going to the social. See ya there!

Count me in also. See you guys at the social!

Also I am from rural texas 😎 so my understanding of casual is limited. I know it means everyday wear but my everyday wear is shorts and a T-shirt, which is hardly appropriate.

What is everybody wearing to the social? I'm planning on going in nice jeans, shirt w/ collar, and decent shoes (Not running shoes )

Nah, it's all good at UTMB.

I got an interview invite for 9/30 as well, see you there!

Leaving tomorrow morning around 9:00 to begin the 7 hour drive. Hope the drive is interesting lol... See you all tomorrow at the social!

Seriously, everyone, check your spam folders. For some reason my UTMB invite ended up directly in my gmail spam folder, and it never told me I had a new message. It was very strange.

I transmitted my app 6/15 and my MCAT scores 8/17. I never received a confirmation email from UTMB. I emailed [email protected] to ask if I should be worried...that was a few days ago. No response. Should I call or is this normal since my mcat scores didnt go over until about 9 days ago???? thanks

It took about 2 weeks between my MCAT score transmission (everything else was transmitted earlier) and the confirmation email. I wouldn't be too worried yet

Just received an interview invite for October. I am OOS.

Interviewing 9/9, but I might have to miss the social the night before. Excited for the interview day though; everyone I've talked to seems pretty happy there.

interviewed 9/02. LOVE everything about this school! the interviewers were so funny and conversational, we talked about anything and everything except for medicine lol😍

I would like it to be Friday and interview day, please. My SO and I went down to Galveston during our first summer in Texas and I haven't seen it since. I am long overdue for a visit...

If anyone who recently interviewed (or is a student) wants to share some more highlights I would be appreciative. I'm planning to use beach visions to get through 8am genetics lectures this week.

Quick question regarding this school and the other Texas ones. I received some conformations from the schools before my LOR's were received. Anyone think I should call and make sure I didn't get stuck in an incomplete pile and not taken out when they got my LOR? Thanks, and good luck 👍

Sure, why not give em a call.

a lot of schools will review your file and even invite you for an interview before your recs are in. I had a few friends who got interviews before they even submitted their letters. I don't think its anything to worry about.

Good point. Thank you all for the input. I'm just going to sit tight. :xf:

If you or anyone else have any specific questions about UTMB or interviews there or whatever, feel free to PM me! 🙂

I'm an MS2 there and would be happy to help! I think it goes without saying that I love UTMB 😍

Good luck on interview days and for those waiting! I didn't interview at UTMB until November and got in Feb 1 after they sent out 400 pre-matches in November so don't give up! (Truthfully, I think I had just sent in my TMDSAS app at this point... so you all are way ahead of where I was!)

Interviewed today, and it was pretty awesome. A few highlights:

The welcome presentation was very informative. I was a little uncertain about problem-based learning, but the school's average Step 1 scores are really high (>230). The "block scheduling" is also nice; taking two intensive classes at once instead of five each semester suits my learning style.

Interviews were similar to those at other schools: one by-the-book interviewer, one conversational guy. UTMB was the first school that I could tell explicitly tried to match me with two people with whom I had something in common, and I really appreciated that. One of my interviews ran almost an hour because we got along so well; hopefully a good sign? :xf:

If you are coming here, ask your student tour guide some questions if you can. The tour is handled entirely by students; I do not believe the admissions staff has any role in those. Ours talked to us for about two hours, and mentioned some very UTMB-specific policies that help keep the medical students well-treated... which I would never have thought to even asked about.

All in all, a very well-run program. The high Step 1 scores and a specific research track I'm interested in mean I would prefer this over any of the other Texas schools, even UTSW. Definite top choice and I don't think that will change.
