Anyone who sent in his/her application in August got an interview invite yet? Can you please let me know when you sent your application and by when you were transmitted 🙂

I think NO answer is a good answer.

your premed advisor is... how shall i put it.... unaware of the medical school process. interviews go out until january for a lot of the schools. so an invite is offered by december, not october.

Not exactly what you asked for, but I'm IS, transmitted 7/8 and got an interview invite two weeks ago. They're not strictly following the 'getting-back-to-you-in-a-month' timeline.

Also, I'm going to be here next Mon and Tues. Is anyone else interviewing on that day?

oh no she is very aware of how the process works. She has been working for Rice U for the last 15 years doing this same thing. What she meant was, I should get most (if not all) interview requests by October 15th based on when my application was transmitted and my numbers. If I don't hear by that date, I should start worrying that something is wrong. But yea her response was directed at where I stand rather than what the process is like.

then disregard my previous comment. although this year's pool may be competitive with similar numbers to yours so you may still have to wait. one of my friends got an interview in december and another one in january. both were accepted.

I received a verification email on August 8 and I haven't heard anything back from them since.

Thanks for the information. Also, I checked your mdapps, can you please tell me when you received an invite from UTH and UTMB?

Verified in mid-July and no invite yet. Stats slightly above averages, but maybe something in my app really stank.

Cyanide, I'm not RandomHero but this info might work as a guideline for you. I got an invite from UTH on Aug 19 (~6-7 weeks after transmission) and UTMB on Aug 3 (~3 weeks after transmission).

Thank you! Just the kind of information I was looking for! I have my fingers crossed because its exactly 4 weeks now since my application got transmitted. And as far as your not getting an invite for SA as yet, I think probably they are saving you for a later interview especially considering you got an invite from UTH and UTMB (which arguably are more competitive schools than SA). I hear that SA likes to keep some good candidates for later interviews so that the students have the school fresh in their mind when its decision time for them.

Same here 🙁 I received confirmation email the first day of August. When did you have your application transmitted to school? I'm thinking about sending an update letter to them. A friend of mine transmitted in June of last year and never heard anything from San Antonio. She got into Houston though.

I got an "application received" email on August 8... it was one of my first of those too. I heard good things about the facilities here from an orthopedic surgeon... I'm hoping to get the opportunity to check them out!!!

I just searched my inbox with "san antonio", I just realized I had received an interview invite! I can't believe I had missed the email!!! Apparently I received the email on the 14th of of September. Does anyone know if it reflects negatively if I RSVP 5 days later to their interview request?

My interview is on Oct 3rd. I have 2 exams on that date. Would it be better to reschedule the exams or to reschedule the interview. (keep in mind that I received the interview invite on the 14th and still have not gotten back yet, somehow I missed the email). I really want to reply to SA ASAP but don't quite feel like complicating matters by requesting another interview date. Any advice on what I should do?

Just go ahead and RSVP soon for this date. I doubt RSVPing 5 days after the invite will hurt you negatively and even if it does you can't do much about it now. However, Interview always take priority over exams IMO. It's your senior year so don't worry too much about taking a make up exam even if it might be harder.

Hope this advice helps! 🙂

You must be one of those people that never deletes any emails. I never understood why people did that.

I know this is crazy but, I check my email so often that I could probably recite every email in my inbox in chronological for the past 4 months. Can't imagine I would miss an interview invite.

Not only do I never delete emails, but also I get spammed with 15 - 20 emails everyday. My college's list serve keeps flooding my inbox. Though I have been obsessively checking my emails, and I am surprised that I missed such an important email. It was only fortuitous that I even searched "san antonio", I was reading this thread where people were talking about receiving a confirmation email from SA once their application was under review. It just made me think that I had not received such an email. In an attempt to make sure that I had not received a confirmation email, I searched SA. And the first and only email that showed up was the interview invite. Couldn't have been any luckier.

On a side note, anyone else interviewing on the 3rd of October?

Gmail is why. I'll never run out of space.

I delete spam and routine, automated "Your monthly billing statement is available" emails, but archive everything else. I've got filters set up with the email addresses of all my professors/TAs that automatically sort them into labels. So I can just click on "Biochemistry" and instantly I've got a special little folder with every email from that class. That plus my class/work/everything schedule being on Google calendar/synched to my phone keeps me organized 1000x better than a handwritten day planner would. It's fun to read emails I was getting 4 years ago. It's really like a jounral.

I really don't know why anyone still uses yahoo or hotmail. Just make a new gmail and have all your mail from the old address forwarded.

/end I-love-gmail rant.

WHy didnt some people create filters and labels based on schools to make sure nothings get lost or sent to spam....

...You mean I've been manually labeling all my emails for years when I can just use a filtering system to automatically label and organize stuff?!?!?!

Well I feel silly now 😳. Thanks for enlightening me

I transmitted 7/18 and I've only heard from Tech Lubbock...

When do I start frantically worrying...?

For those of you worrying, its never an inappropriate time to send an update letter or something similar to get your name back into the discussion. It can only help you if its done tactfully.

Just wanna add to that - there's a girl in our class here who told me that she didn't hear anything from this school for a while even though she had gotten interviews at other places.. so she sent them a letter of interest and within a week or so they invited her for an interview and now she's here! Can't be coincidence.. I would definitely suggest doing so if your app was transmitted early but haven't heard anything yet.. but as he said, make sure its tactfully done!

Email vs snail mail? Email is of course faster, but a real letter (may) be viewed as being more professional and it's also harder to just ignore something physical than it is to ignore/delete an email. What do you think?

I would definitely do snailmail for those exact reasons. Good luck!

what do you mean by tactfully done? i really want to attend UTHSCSA so i am really interested in that option.

I just mean done in a professional manner. A well written/thought out letter that includes a concise yet positive overview of what you've done since your app and why you should be admitted into UTHSCSA vs. another school will make you stand out.

Also, don't know if this is supposed to be a secret or not, but UTHSCSA reviews every single admissions related material that comes in (nothing gets "thrown" into the discard pile). With that being said, don't write an update/LOI unless you actually have something to say. Imagine what its like to read literally hundreds of these things, when they all have the same story. I would only write an update/LOI if you actually have something important/interesting to update them on, or an actual good reason why you think UTHSCSA is a good fit for you. An attempt to bring attention to yourself with a letter with no substance probably won't help you.

well i took summer classes and got A's on them. i have A's in all of my classes in my SMP at UNTHSC right now but they wont show up on the transcript since its still pending. I really like uthscsa because of its location and its feel. But i dont know how important those things are to consider writing a LOI.

I interviewed on 9/26 and also went to the social at the Flying Saucer. The MS1s I met on Sunday night were very nice and welcoming. They stopped by Monday morning to chat a little more and wish me luck. Pretty much everyone was warm and friendly. I actually met my student interviewer in the morning and made sure I was in her tour group.

My actual interviews were very relaxed and the questions asked were straightforward, nothing difficult or unexpected. My student interviewer, however, made notes on my personal statement and asked very specific questions about it.

For those who are interested, some questions asked:
-What do you think is the biggest problem in health care today?
-You were selected for an interview, so you are obviously qualified to be here. Tell me a little more about yourself.
-What is your greatest accomplishment?
-Tell me about your biggest failure.
-You know 18 hours in one semester is the equivalent of two weeks in medical school. How do you know you are prepared to deal with the stresses of medical school?

Other than personal statement specific questions, everything else was your basic why medicine/strengths/weaknesses/future plans type questions. I hope that helps someone out a little! Good luck to those with upcoming interviews and also to those waiting to hear back 🙂

Interviewing here on Oct. 10th. Anyone from Houston driving the moring of or the afternoon before to SA? Debating whether or not I want to stay with a student host.

Thanks for the info. I have some stuff to update them with. Since I got the "complete" email on 7/8, I have: 2 summer courses with As, a new (increased) MCAT score released in August, another job for this semester as a Teaching Assistant, and extracurricular activities.
Who should I address the letter to though? To the dean of admissions, the admissions committee??

Thanks for your help 🙂

When I was sending update letters last year, I always addressed them to Dr. Jones directly. He really is great, and tends to be a very hands on dean of admissions.

I've been manually labeling my emails too. lol. How do you get it to automatically label the emails?

If you're using Gmail, go to "Create filter" and follow the steps from there.

Check-box the email you wish to filter by, "More" --> "Filter messages like these". Then it will populate the email address field, but, for example, when my professors use blackboard to mass email a special code is inserted into the subject which I also copy/paste that into the "has the words" box. That way it doesn't matter who emails me, if they mass email the entire class, it get labeled.

Do a test search to make sure it finds all the right emails that are in your gmail, and not ones you don't want.

Next step--> click apply to current # emails if you want --> create filter.

Then mess with the colors you want and decide which filter you want to be visible vs hidden on the left of your screen (usually only current semester is visible, I hide everything else). Add TA's emails too if you want. It's fun to go into my hidden folders and look at all the emails I got from my into to bio professor in 2009. 😀

Do they accept additional letters of recommendation pre-interview?? I haven't received an interview invite yet, but I have a character reference letter from a professor at my grad school that can be sent in.
Or do they only accept additional letters post-interview? Or not at all?
