I just got a completely unexpected rejection as well. I went through the VCU certificate program and interviewed at the med school 2 weeks ago. I thought everything went well, and was told that we would be notified of whether we were accepted on October 15th. If not, we were told that we would be rolled over to the next group, possibly to be admitted later. I just got the same rejection message, which is extremely surprising and really doesn't make any sense. This must be a mistake..

I got a notification as well...but I'm not quite sure what it means. I think mine was hold status?

Me too! So did everyone receive either hold or rejection? Or were there people who also received an acceptance notification? I am confused! :/
 
This is really strange. Especially if you have already interviewed, because I think they generally waitlist you or wait until later to send a rejection. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I have learned to accept rejection throughout this process, but this sucks.
 
I tried checking last year's thread but couldn't gain much info...

that is odd. i thought they didnt' give out decisions (at least offers) until Oct 16 or something like that. Um...how did your interview go? like your impression was that it was fine right? so this is completely out of left field?
 
My understanding is as follows: After you are presented to the committee and they vote, you are given a rank of 1-5. If you are given a rank of 1-3, you are put on the "wait list" and they draw people off this (the higher up, the better) on the selection days. If you are given a rank of 4 or 5, you are rejected and not even put on the waitlist.

Which hotels do you guys recommend? I need one with wifi and shuttle service to VCU.

I like the Omni in Shockoe Slip the best, it's a bit pricey, but really nice and in a cool area to experience Richmond. They have a shuttle service that will take you within about 5 miles from the hotel. You could easily walk about 1.5 miles to MCV, but if you want to look nice and refreshed, I'd take the shuttle. And, if you sign up for the "special guest" program , you get free WiFi, speed through check-in, a water bottle on arrival and free morning beverages! You can select city view or a view of the James River-- I like the James and ask for a room high up. NO, I don't work for Omni.
It's just that nice! Most times when I stayed there, or family, it has been between $120-$150
a night, but well worth it.

You know, now that I remember last year, if you say that you are interviewing at the med school, you might get a bunch off. I stayed at the Jefferson last year for my interview and got a huge discount by just mentioning the interview , and FWIW, this is pretty much true for all places you might interview at, best of luck.

Hello SDNers!

I'm an M1 at VCU right now (OOS) and I just wanted to throw it out there that if you guys have specific questions or anything, feel free to PM me. I went through this whole process not too long ago so I know what you're going through!

For all of you worried about your chances if OOS, my class is roughly half VA-residents and half from the rest of the country.

I just had my interview today at VCU. I want to start off by saying wow this school is absolutely amazing. I was really impressed with the facilities, the staff and most importantly how happy the students seemed. With that being said most of my peers that were interviewing thought the interview was pretty casual. However, my interview was pretty intense. It was an almost 2 hour interview!! and it started out casually but got really intense. The interviewer had my entire application dissected (he had about 2 pages worth of notes taken) and asked questions about a lot of specifics concerning my life. He also threw random questions that weren't really related to my application concerning different fields just to get a deeper idea of who I am as a person. Over all, I think the interview went well but I don't think it was too laid back 😱. Good luck to everyone else!

P.S The associate director of admissions mentioned something about acceptances being 60 % in-state and 40 % being OOS (idk what year she was referring to though), so folks from OOS do have a chance. However, as VCU stated on it's website since they are slightly funded by the State of Virginia, they have to give priority to In-state students.

Yeah my interviewer knew more stuff about me than I knew myself right when I entered the room. VCU definitely reviews their applicants in great amount of detail. The stuff he highlighted and had written down was pretty thorough it must have taken him at least a couple hours to get that detailed. Over all my interviewer was an awesome guy and he definitely knew what he was doing in terms of interviewing haha

When someone gets an interview they could just mention whether they were on the "MAY" or "FURTHER" list, that way we don't have to have this long ongoing list.

I've been complete since Aug 17th...and I have no status assigned to my file... Anyone else complete around this time that is still just "complete" besides me? It just seems like its taking a little longer than usual...

That is very odd that it hasn't been sent to the committee yet. I received my secondary in July, but didn't submit it until a few weeks ago because I struggled with the essay. However, my app was sent to the committee within 1 week of submitting. I am a below average applicant stats-wise.
 
I'll preface by saying that I could care either way about the chart and status but since half of the people love the chart idea, and half of the people hate it, what if we tried this:

Did anyone who got a "decision" post-interview call about it? I was also under the impression that we wouldn't hear anything either way until at least October 16th.

If not, we were told that we would be rolled over to the next group, possibly to be admitted later. I just got the same rejection message, which is extremely surprising and really doesn't make any sense. This must be a mistake..

That is incorrect the Dean of Admissions specifically said that you could be rejected anytime. She said that if your committee score was high you would get an acceptance October 15th or get rolled over. However, if your committee score was low you could get rejected any second. That is exactly what I remembered her mentioning on the day of my interview.

What does this mean?? A hold? May status??


The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken.
