Questions for current students -- or those that already interviewed:

Is lecture attendance mandatory?
Are lectures recorded and posted online?
What is the preclinical grading scheme?

...Will the "new curriculum" change any of the above?

Thanks.

PS: I did a couple quick keyword searches in this thread, but not much success.

from my interview, the impressions i got were:

- lecture attendance not mandatory (one of my tourguides outright said he never went to class)
- lectures are recorded and posted online... they have this like "vcu med school" website that's sorta like blackboard but it has a discussion forum for ppl to share notes, etc. it has all the lectures too. things like that
- i forgot ... i think it's p/f
- we don't really knwo anything about the new curriculum. it won't be for our incoming class at all (entering fall 2012). we won't be affected by it

Woohoo! I got an interview invite today!!! Keep the hope ALIVE guys!!!

For those wondering: 30O/OOS, submitted 9/27, "MAY" status 10/3, II on 11/28.

Just got an II! I was complete 9/9, got "may" status on 11/18, invite 11/28. OOS 32O/3.8

There are a lot of interview dates, don't lose hope! I have conflicts with all the December dates, so January it is!

Interview invite!!! wohoooooooooooo!!

Congrats, guys! Good luck :luck::xf:

so nervous about my interview on the 1st...

Good luck, you'll be great! Just remember-you got the interview for a reason. All they want to see now is you and your personality. Just be yourself and you'll be fine!

Unless you're an axe murderer or Ted Bundy or something like that...then hide yourself the best you can 😀

Rock it! 👍

Hey all,

I've been accepted to USUHS and a top choice in-state school, so I am going to withdraw my application from VCU. I had an interview scheduled for 12/13 ( which I'm about to cancel) so if anyone wants that date, it will be available shortly!!

Good luck everyone!!!

Does anyone know how VCU is about rescheduling interviews? Is it difficult?

In the online application portal there is a distinct "reschedule interview" option at the top of the page... What follows after clicking that hyperlink: ???

I didn't ask how to reschedule an interview. I asked how flexible the school is with changing interview dates for those who have had success doing so already?

has any OOS candidates with further status been called for interview...seems like this kind doesn't get one? been complete since july

Thanks Phnerd and Docbrill for the words of encouragement. I guess its now or never!

Well guys, it's t-minus 14 days until the next acceptance date. If I get in, they will hear my shreiks of delight (and subsequent *thud* as I vasovagal and fall to the floor) all the way in Richmond.

Good luck all!:luck:

Good luck guys! I hope you all hear good news on December 15th :xf::luck:

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else received any phantom "status update" emails? I received one of the 24-hour notices on 11/28 but my status page remains unchanged. This is the second time this has happened to me.

do they accept the most candidates on this dec. 15th date? or is it an even ~70 each time

got rejected today via status update email. OOS applicant and was small pooled since sept.

Got this today:

"The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

I suppose this is equivalent to a rejection?

Hi everyone,

I'm new at this and have been grateful for the insightful advice you all have generously shared. I'd like to reply to the above post with my situation.

Non-traditional -- 38 years old engineer -- OOS -- 29Q (imbalanced) -- 3.7 GPA
Completed 11/6

Status Change History (After Completion):
- 1st Status Change 11/22: "Your file will be forwarded to the committee" ==> "Your file is being reviewed by the committee."
- 2nd Status Change 11/30: the reversed of the above status update
- 3rd Status change 12/1 (just ~1 hr ago): "MAY" status

Given my status change history, my guess is after a reviewer in the adcom assigns a score to my file, the system needs to get the approval from another person. To us, i.e. applicants, the status flickers back and forth with no seemingly meaningful status change, but each time it does, my guess is another person in the adcom needs to take a look at the issue(s) to weigh in their opinions in order to push the file along the process. Just my guess.

The bottom line is, waiting is better than....not being allowed to wait (i.e. rejection). So, hang in there, I guess (because I am in the same situation here).

The MAY status is pretty good for OOSers. You can estimate your chance using the following table:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmWDAydmzLmrdEZibkUxR3QxeVJabkJOZDhHZE1GRnc&hl=en_US#gid=0

And feel free to add yourself to it. Good luck!

What are the chances of an OOS applicant getting an offer of acceptance on Dec 15th?

I interviewed in mid-September and didn't hear anything on the Oct 15th date. Does this indicate I will most likely be waitlisted/rejected on the final date or is it still possible to be accepted on the Dec or Feb date?

Thank you, docbrill! 🙂

For a quick update:
I got a call this morning for interview on any Mondays including next Monday. The lady was so nice and so caring! She stayed on the phone to make sure I was able to book my flight online and get the confirmation before putting my name down for the interview slot. The reason is we are allowed to re-schedule only once, so it's best to schedule for an interview and stick with it. I've been applying for the fmSTAT program (family medicine) so they would combine both the school of medicine interview with the fmSTAT program in the morning as well. I'm super excited (and a bit exhausted after a full day working on top of the booking and preparation).

Will update you all once I'm back from the interview!

just checking my inbox, I had a few 'status updates' from VCU over the course of October-Nov, after my submission, now I've had the "further" status

Any idea on why sooo many status updates?

I've had the "reservations" status for a couple of months now (since August). I called them and inquired about my file and they just told me to wait. What gives?

Status Change:

The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken.

What is this even supposed to mean? I can't even tell. Got my hopes up when I read they would like to consider my file further but then it sort of contradicts itself as it goes along....

Is this another fancy way of saying "hold"?

No, this is "FURTHER" status.

Getting more and more lonely here...on MAY status since 8/4

Does anyone know: if you interviewed in November, will you most likely be accepted on Dec. 15, if you are to be accepted at all? Or do they outright accept a small number, and leave a larger number of us hanging until the next acceptance date? Thanks so much. I REALLY want to get in here! Itching to write a LOI, but I think they said they don't like them.

They accept most matriculants from the wait list. So even if you don't get accepted on the specific acceptance dates it's not over and you still stand a good chance.

Ugh! So they are more likely to waitlist you, interview more people and then accept you later, rather than accept you outright? I'm glad I know this, although I will still be really sad/anxious if I'm waitlisted. Do you (or anyone) happen to know % waitlisted first vs. % outright accepted?

You're stressing a little too much. Each acceptance date they accept about 70 applicants and they accept 140 from the wait list. These numbers are from the 800 total they interview i believe a year. The numbers might not be exact but those are the rough estimated numbers I recall fom my interview in September.

Haha, I don't mean to be such a stress case. It's just that getting in here would mean significantly less strain on my family due to location, plus I liked this school the best out of the state schools I interviewed at.

Flodhi, you are swimming in acceptances, are you not? Have you decided where you're going yet?

Yes I was accepted 10/17 and I am deciding between my top 2 picks:- Drexel and VCU. I am leaning more towards VCU though.

I got this status recently as well. Does this qualify as either the "may" or "further" status? It seems as though our applications need to be more rigorously screened i.e. by two committees rather than one, before a decision can be made. Maybe the vote whether to grant an interview was split in the first committee review...

Got this today:

I believe this is "further" status. Not to worry, scroll back in the thread and you will see that many applicants have received II's after this. Plus, this is the time of year that some folks start giving up interviews, having already received an acceptance or two. Good luck!:luck:

From what I've read throughout this thread, this is actually the "reservations" status. There is a post much earlier in the thread that somewhat explains all of the possible statuses.

*doh* sorry! I thought they were one and the same. Didn't mean to give out bad info😳

This post is far too informative to let gather dust in last year's thread, so I'm bumping it 😀:

F A Q s

GENERAL APPLICATION PROCESS

1. What is a priority score?

A priority score is assigned to every applicant in order to determine the candidacy of each applicant to enter the next stage in the process. A file reviewer will give you a priority score to determine if you meet requirements for a secondary. Post-secondary, a file reviewer will determine if you deserve an interview. These two scores have little to do with you getting in. After an interview the ADCOM assigns a third priority score to determine if the applicant is to be accepted, put on hold, or rejected. - Instatewaiter

2. Do any out-of-staters get an acceptance in the first batch? Do you have to have stellar stats?

The first batch is the hardest to get in from and they tend to have the highest stats. It is very common that people who interviewed early get pushed along until the committee reaches that priority score. For example: let's say Bob gets a score of 2.5 (1 is the best, 3.5-5 is a rejection). In October they may only offer to a 1.5 (Bob doesn’t get in and gets pushed to the next batch) . In December a 2.0 (Bob doesn’t get in). In January, a 2.2 and in March a 2.5. So Bob would have to wait until March to get in. - Instatewaiter

POST-SECONDARY

1. My application was just complete, how long does it take for them to make a decision about an interview?

VCU has a response time faster than most other schools. The committee usually takes about 1-2 weeks to review a completed application. Keep in mind that this estimate can increase depending on where they are in the application cycle. The length of time also depends on your priority score.

2. I recently got a status update post-secondary, but it was very vague. What does this mean?

I have done some research and it seems that there are 2-3 possible updates that the adcoms send out post secondary review:

A) The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail.

B) The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further.

What do these mean? The committee has looked at your file and decided you meet the qualifications for an interview. They do not want to guarantee you an interview right now because they do not know what the schedule will be like 4 months in advance. It would not be fair to guarantee an interview and later rescind it due to a lack of interview spots. Just take this as a good sign. People from the past 2 cycles usually recieve an invitation ranging from two days to a month. So be patient and wait. It could take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks.
It has been speculated that the two messages could be correlated to a certain priority score, but this has not been substantiated by the ADCOM.

C) The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken.

This is pretty straightforward, but it is important to note it is NOT a rejection. It only means that the person giving the priority score could not come to a decision. Additional staff will look at the file to collaborate for a decision.

POST-INTERVIEW

1. How does the ADCOM determine your priority score?

Your file is projected onto a screen and people start tearing you down based on weaknesses. Your file reviewer (one who initially read your file) and interviewer are your advocates and push for you to get in. They field questions and there is a discussion about you. Each member on the adcom gives you a score from 1-5. The highest and lowest score are thrown out and the rest are averaged. This is your priority score. 1 is the best basically the ideal candidate and 5 is the worst. Anything above a 3.5 is an automatic rejection.

There you go.

ok so for anyone confused about the statuses...I found this from last year's thread...I don't know how legit it is but it makes sense. VCU seems to have 5 priority scores and here they are with the messages:

Application Status:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

#1 - you are interviewed
#2/3 - may be interviewed (still not sure how they are different or which is better)
#4 - subcommitee message
#5 - rejection.

This is what I found...hope it helps

And here is the other one for those who are confused about the statuses.

Thank you for the clarification. It seems to me that there are no majors differences between the "may", "further" and "reservations" statuses. Basically, the committee wasn't ready to grant an interview to the applicant, or reject the applicant just yet. However, I do recognize the word "reservations" carries a more negative connotation...

That was amazing information thank you docbrill, I think that information probably cleared up a lot of confusion.

I'm looking forward to checking out this school.

Does anyone from the area know how well roads are maintained during the winter months?

From my experience, very well. Or, at least better than in North Carolina. The virginian government has lots of contracts with civillians that have their own snow plows so the roads are generally cleared pretty quickly.

It rarely snows in Richmond, if that is what you are concerned about. I was just interviewed, and the student tour guides said that they cancel school if snow is forecasted. I don't think it's something you need to worry about.

But, the interview process was great, my interviewer, an MD, and I had so much in common! It felt like I was talking to a friend, not an interviewer.

Good luck to everyone else interviewing!
