Little bit of a problem here. My AMCAS was verified in the first week of September. I still haven't even gotten a secondary yet from Duke. Should I be worried? Should I call the admissions office or am I worrying needlessly? I've completed all of my other secondaries and have 1 interview invite so far, but Duke's really toward the top of my list. I have good grades and a competitive MCAT, but I didn't think Duke screened anyway so I don't understand what's going on.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Duke doesn't screen; it sounds like you should give the admissions office a call after a month has passed. This is the peak of admissions season, but it shouldn't take so long to get a secondary out, I think. Good luck!

You're correct in that Duke gives secondaries to everyone. I don't think it would hurt to call and check with the admissions office to see if there's been a problem. Also, I think the prompts for Duke have been posted so you can go ahead and finish your secondary while you wait, and if you still haven't gotten it by the time you're done you can check then. If you can't find the prompts message me and I'll send them to you.

In case you didn't know, Duke's secondary is pretty time-consuming, so it's not a bad idea to get started early! Also note; there is an option on Duke's secondary to apply for the "Primary Care Leadership Track," and if you choose to check this option, your essays will be different. If you'd like to know the prompts for those essays (as opposed to the ones listed on the first page of this thread) let us know!

So i've decided to withdraw my duke secondary application. Anyone have any idea how to do that? Or do I just not submit it?

You could take either route. If you want to withdraw officially, you can probably email the admissions office with something like "I wish to withdraw my application to the MD Program at Duke University School of Medicine," and, if they are like many other schools, they'll email you back stating that you have withdrawn.

EDIT: Wow, you got three answers in just a few minutes haha.

Send them an email stating, "I'd rather keep my soul than write your secondary essays."

LOL. seriously thou. that's the only reason I am withdrawing my application. I already applied to 27 other schools with quite a few top ranked schools already. Duke's secondary is just going to drain too much my of my energy and brain power that I just don't think is worth it. Plus, I don't have a 40 on my MCAT, so I don't see a chance of getting in.

If its because of numbers I'd reconsider. They really do look at your essays. I got an interview with a 33 Mcat. So the hard work would not be overlooked.

Duke II tonight! I'm a bit shocked!

I looked through the thread and couldn't find any opinions on whether it's best to interview early. The two dates I'm able to make are 14 days apart. Probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I'm just excited and want to maximize my shot.

Any input?

Duke is non rolling. It won't affect your chances, especially not a difference of 14 days.

When were you complete?

for those who got interview invites, what was the time frame between secondary submit and interview invites?

Congrats!

So out of curiosity for their process, did you find out on the application server or by email first?

Can someone fill me in on how Duke processes recommendation letters? They never asked me for them through AMCAS and I just got an interview invite last week. Am I somehow supposed to give it to them?

Read the original email, guys.

Four letters of recommendation (two of which must be from science faculty) should be sent to Duke AFTER you have received an invitation to interview (UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING TO THE MEDICAL SCIENTIST TRAINING PROGRAM - MD/PhD- See MSTP (MD/PhD Program) applicants information below). This applies to applicants who are planning to submit paper recommendations. Recommendation letters are not reviewed or required by the screening committee but will should be on file at the time you interview. Four letters are required, two of which should be submitted by science faculty. After you receive an invitation to interview, paper recommendations should be sent to:

The Committee on Admissions

Room 0159 Duke South

201 Trent Drive

Box 3710 DUHS

Durham, NC 27710

Feel free to contact the admissions office to determine if your letters have arrived either before or after your interview date.

Duke doe! s not participate in the AMCAS Recommendation Se! rvice. & nbsp;Duke does receive letters electronically from VirtualEvals and Interfolio. *If your institution or premed advising center will be transmitting your recommendations electronically using VirtualEvals or Interefolio, your recommendations will be downloaded from the VirtualEvals or Interfolio servers to your electronic file after you have been extended an invitation to interview. *The Office of Admissions encourages you to call (919-684-2985) if you have any questions.

Pmod have u got an II yet? I've seen u posting around as it seems like ur killing this cycle!

I don't see any mention of a committee letter? And I thought I remember Duke suggesting we use Interfolio?

Friend interviewed there last year and said committee letter was fine, I would confirm though.

A Duke professor, Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz, is being awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry!

Sorry to hear that! I'm sure you'll have success with other schools, unfortunately rejection's part of this process for everyone. When did you submit?

thanks! submitted 7/15

Some good news for those that get an interview here. US news and MSAR show that duke previously interviewed around 1200 people and accepted 200. As of last year and this cycle, duke is only interviewing around 800..so much better odds!!

The MMIs at Duke are ~10 minutes long. I think 2 min to read prompt/8 min to answer question is standard. Do the raters discuss the question with you during the MMIs or are you just delivering an 8 min soliloquy at each station?

Rater interaction depends on A) the set scenario, B) the personality/sociability of the given rater.

HTH 🙂

For the 1st secondary question about the community where you spent the majority of your early development, is it not advisable to talk about attending a Christian school? I went to Christian schools for elementary and middle school.

Yeah this is true. I also felt like some of my raters were trying really really hard to keep a straight face throughout the whole eight minutes. No matter how much charm I tried to throw on. Others though were openly friendly, all smiles. Guess it depends who you get.

Has anyone who submitted in early august heard about interviews or rejections? It seems that everyone who posts about it submitted mid-July and I'm wondering when they'll finally get to august.

Complete July 25. Still under "Application Screening." I like this school so much and I JUST WANT TO KNOW! :bang:

Anyone interviewing tomorrow want to grab some grub at the Millenium Hotel (I'm assuming this is where a lot of us are staying)? If so, PM me and we'll set it up.
