Does most movement occur leading up to the 15th or immediately following? This question was asked in the past but I never saw a clear answer. Any info would be appreciated!

The 15th is the deadline. Anyone with an acceptance who declines means the next highest AWPA gets an acceptance. They're usually pretty quick about it.

fingers still crossed for meeeee 🙂. AWPA since Novemberr holla at your boyyy

I wonder how many acceptances have gone out at this point. Says on the site 158 went out in 2011. Is that typical? I guess if 80% AWPA get in and 158 went out then the AWPA list is about 198 people long (30 people left out in the rain 🙁) Of course those numbers are assuming only 80% of AWPA get in, and they quote 80-90% get in from the emails I've seen. If we knew that ~130 acceptances have went out already, then I guess you could say that (if the trend stays the same) around 28 more slots will go out to the remaining AWPA pool of 58 applicants (around 50% chance of still getting in). Of course, if 140 acceptances have already go out, then that makes your chances a lot slimmer (18/48 getting in). And there is always the chance that they will be giving out less than 158 acceptances, since the # of acceptances is entirely based on people declining. The class size is 72 every year so 158 issued acceptances (more than the entire class size saying no at 86 declining) does seem rather large...

Either way, this doesn't really help anyone tell if they are going to get in. If you are the last guy on AWPA (probably ME 🙁) you're never getting in, but if you are next in line you are almost surely getting in. At this point I'm just trying to set up some backup plans (like Loyola's MAMS.) By June 1st we should all have a pretty good idea if we are in or not so at least it will be over soon. Sorry for the ramble, but I'm bored at work. Best of luck to everyone! Hopefully we hear about a lot of movement this week.

Well I looked up the facebook page and it looks like there are 44 members and 2 of those are admins soooooo there are about 30 spaces left it looks like give or take a few who may not have joined the group. We will see!!!

Some of the people in there are older students as well. 😉

So I woke up to a really great email this morning... accepted!!!! 😀

Thanks for putting up with me these last few months, I know the premed tendencies make me a bit insufferable at times but I do appreciate the patience and advice you guys gave me.

Nonsense. Remember, I WAS you last year. Haha. I'm glad you made it.

So when should I begin panicking/reapplying if I'm still waiting to get off the AWPA list?

Previous posts said there's considerable movement throughout May, so I don't think I'd give up yet (just my $0.02)

Most of the "quick" movement just happened most likely. Those were the folks with multiple acceptances that decided to go elsewhere. Things will slow down some now. We still had a couple of folks join my class as late as July, but I wouldn't count on too much of that happening. If I were at this point without an acceptance, I would start to plan out my path to the next application cycle, take the hit emotionally and move on. If I happened to get accepted late in the cycle, then it would be a very pleasant surprise.

Thank you for the advice! Hopefully I will have better news for you later..

For those who withdrew: did you receive a confirmation e-mail? Kinda hoping I didn't have to make a phone call since usually e-mails suffice...

I received an email back along with a request to fill out a survey about my feelings and why. Two separate emails, first from Beth with a simple thank you, and that they would return my $100 deposit and another email with subject of SIUMED:Withdrawn Student Survey.

Can anyone give me recommendations for apartments with good ratings in Springfield?

Just gave up my spot. Good luck to whoever gets the next acceptance.

I also just declined my position. Good luck everyone! SIU was awesome, but it can't really compete with med school being completely covered for me. 🙂

I have an older computer and was thinking that now might be a good time to upgrade for starting at SIU. I talked to a Year 1 student, and she said that students use laptops a lot for study groups. Thus, she said lighter would be better. I was wondering if someone could comment about it. Also, how accurate is this specs page www.siumed.edu/lib/compspec.html? Finally, I'm a mac user, but I also like working with Windows at work. Is there an advantage to either system for medical school/research?

I dont think we will need super powerful computers. We probably will only be using them to browse the Internet, powerpoints, and videos. Most cheap netbooks could handle this. If your mac is one of the larger ones, you may want to get a small netbook/ultrabook. If you have the big bucks, just get one of the smaller macs. I'm sure retina display would strain your eyes a little less. I was thinking about getting a tablet, but smaller laptops would probably be best.

Yup. Most of us have macbook pro or air. About a quarter have netbook/pc o some sort. I operated the whole year with only an Ipad. If you wait a bit, they'll let you know that you can buy one new comp in your 4years here and they'll add the cost to your loans (if money is tight)

All that said, you only need enough computing power to surf the web and open powerpoint/word/.pdf files.

P.S. Carbondale is where the internet goes to die. They just upgraded the internet in our building, so hopefully its better for you than it was for us.

This.

I use my iPad day to day. I have a MBP I use as needed.

For those of you who are accepted- have u gotten any information on things like sending final transcripts or paying more deposit money for tuition? I'm about to leave for a trip and just wanted to make sure I have as much done as I can before I go. I have only received those two introductory emails which didn't mention a whole lot about what else we need to do.

According to student affairs in carbondale, they sent out a letter a day or two ago with more information, so you should be receiving that fairly soon.

Thank you for the information. This is helpful! I am still looking around for different computers and may wait until August.

Also, what were some surprises for you in year 1? Did it live up to the hype?

Surprise #1: I was no longer "the smart guy"
Surprise #2: I had to work my butt off just to pass

To sum up: med school is hard. Take it seriously from day 1.

I got in like an hour ago! I always thought that i'd jump up and down or cry of happiness...instead I pretty much started hyperventilating  I'm sooooo excited!!!!

I've been looking into the apartment situation, and I see in past threads westwood hills and Aspen Court of been the norm for med students, but the reviews seem to have a big problem with the landlord at Westwood Hills and it seems like there have been a lot of problems with the electricity/internet dependibility/insulation at Aspen Court. Any thoughts. I'm ideally looking for a one bedroom in the vicinity of other med school students.

The internet is sketchy all over carbondale unfortunately. We had a few at aspen and a few at wedgewood as well. The point is much nicer, but more on the pricey side. Sun Valley is also very nice, but pricey. Brookside is cheap, but on the dumpier side.
