I completed 8/7.... just got an email..

CA, 3.5/32

September 24, 2012

Dear Applicant:
We regret to inform you that your application will receive no further consideration for the class to enter the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2013. As you know the class is limited to 192 students, and the available places do not go very far in accommodating the large number of highly qualified applicants who have applied to the Tulane University School of Medicine. We hope that you receive an acceptance to a medical school of your choice and that both success and happiness will be yours as you continue your training.

Sincerely,
Marc J. Kahn, M.D., M.B.A.
Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs

BOOOO first rejection🙁
:-( Sorry. I'm sure other schools will give you a chance. hang in there!

Any insights from those who interviewed yesterday?

Just interviewed this morning!

Your interview day starts at 8am and goes to around 2pm, and is packed with school introductions, 2 faculty interviews, 1 student interview over lunch ("a working lunch"), and then a school tour. All 3 were pretty laid-back, conversational style interviews. The 2 faculty were really nice and there was no pressure at all! Big emphasis on: 1. Fit (whether you fit Tulane)/why Tulane, as a faculty member even said that medical education from an accredited med school is pretty uniform across, so why come to TU and not your local med school? 2. Service, since NOLA is at the heart of a poor community with a lot of problems. My 2 faculty interviews also asked some standard ethics and scenario questions, but both stated that they just want to get to know you.

All in all, it was a no-sweat day (that was interview-related, anyway - it's was a sweltering, humid day by climate standards). Good luck to everyone who applied there!

Alright, so I received my interview invite Sept 7, sent a confirmation email within an hour of receiving it, and have yet to receive the addendum. My interview is in a week (October 1st). Is the addendum really, really super important? I would at least love to know exactly where to park so I can sort of start planning ahead; parking in NOLA stresses me out.

And just for anyone wondering, I'm IS, 34, 3.91 sGPA, 3.88 cGPA, complete 7/17.

The addendum only had information on transportation from the airport, discounted hotel prices and info, and a link to sign up for a student host. It didn't have anything about parking, so maybe you should email the lady who sent the invite email, Ms. Vargas, with any logistical questions.

I interview there on Friday, and there is a lot where students park right next to the Murphy Building (where Admissions is), and it seemed like you didn't need a permit. But you could probably get the details from Ms. Vargas. Good luck!

Thanks so much! I might just drive down there sometime this week and check out the parking situation. I should have done that this past weekend, dang it. I'll be on the lookout for that lot you mentioned!

It is directly in front of Murphy, $3 for the cash box. You'll be fine.

Are you supposed to get an email when you are complete? I don't think I got one and I submitted my app like 3 weeks ago

Sorry to hear that my friend. Would you mind sharing or PMing your stats? Good luck at your other schools!

no prob...32, 3.5ish, SMP 3.8, top 20 undergrad, and at least I thought I had really good ECs

good luck to the ones in the running

I bet your ECs ARE good. Remember that this process can be pretty random at times. Best of luck to you!

called the admissions office last Friday about rescheduling my interview and they told me to write an email, which would then be forwarded to the Dean. i sent it on Sunday night, and still haven't heard back. i'm afraid my interview is now going to be pushed way way back. at this point should i call or am i being a neurotic premed?

Does anyone have the link to the student host list? I replied to Ms. Vargas for an interview confirmation back on September 7th and have yet to hear back... my interview is coming up and I'm getting nervous! I booked my flight and everything but they haven't even emailed me back with a 100% confrmation of my email date lol.

Hey student doctors,
Long time listener, first time caller. Just got an II yesterday for Oct. 22nd, pretty pumped because I've been complete since 7/13 and had given up hope of ever getting an interview. Anyone else in a similar boat and interviewing 10/22? And last question... I know Tulane is a 'blind interview', but is it also one of those schools where all applicants are on a level playing field once II's are extended, and your acceptance from then on is mostly based on interview performance?

II just now! Complete 8/6. Does anyone have stats on how many people are interviewed vs. accepted?

II also just now! I was complete on August 15.
OOS applicant.

Congrats! I'm not sure if that data is published for Tulane but since they interview so few people, chance of acceptance is relatively high.

What are some good hotels in the area? I've been waiting for an email detailing this information, but have yet to receive anything. Thanks in advance.

Is there a reason why Tulane's average indebtedness is so unusually high?

A big part of the debt is due to the large number of Tulane students getting additional degrees. A huge portion of the class is enrolled in the MD/MPH program which racks up larger tuition bills.

Which is why I plan to pursue an MPH in a 4yr program or during residency/fellowship.

sigh. . . was really hoping for an II from Tulane but it looks like I've been passed over- complete 8/8. I'll continue to hope until the rejection email comes, but am no longer feeling optimistic.

What is the percentage of the student body? Other schools have this option as well but doesn't this much indebtedness

They told us on interview day that you are charged by credit hour for the MPH, so there's just no avoiding the charge associated with the degree! A lot of students take classes (online and in-person) the summer before M1 (they say T1).

Well crap. No wonder they don't advertise that aspect. I feel jipped now. :-( But I still heart me some Tulane. Peas show me love, Tulane. Peas, aunty Lane?

I got an II just Friday (9/28) and was complete7/27!

I stayed one night with a student host, and the second night with a fellow applicant interviewee at the St. Christopher's Best Western (one of the Tulane deals listed on the Addendum Info document). It was a really nice hotel, great location, and quite affordable with the Tulane rate, but there was a two night minimum stay.

Does anyone know if how Tulane looks on service/being interested in community health (like if it gives you an edge). I know that as an Americorps Volunteer they waived my application fee but I was really hoping for Tulane because I heard they were very much interested in people who wanted to help the less fortunate (I am an americorps volunteer in a health care clinic for the homeless).

Anyone want to split a hotel? I'll be there from afternoon of Oct 10 to the morning of the 13th.

If other people who were complete since then have been getting rejections and you haven't, then you most likely are getting an interview at some point. A current student pointed this out a page or two back in the thread, and in my case at least, he was right.

Hi Everyone,

I'm a 4th year at Tulane. Now that I'm starting to go through the process of applying and interviewing again, I am starting to remember how hectic and stressful this process can be. I'm here to answer any questions you may have regarding the school (our philosophy, our curriculum, our teachers) as well as the New Orleans area (hotels, restaurants, bars, etc.). please do not send me questions regarding your application (i.e. am I competitive?/do you know when I will get an interview?). I am not on the admissions committee, so I cannot help you. I will do my best to answer your questions in a timely manner, but remember, I'm applying right now too 🙂

Best wishes and good luck,
DN

this was true for me - I was complete 8/6 and just got an II on 9/28

I got an interview for that same day! I'm very excited about it too. Flight's are very expensive though. Where are you thinking of staying?

Best of luck,
wlodajo

I submitted my payment on 9/9 and just got a "complete" email today. What gives? Did anyone else have to wait a month before they got their confirmation?

I got excited thinking I was getting an interview, now I'm just annoyed
