Interview here coming up. I know it's relaxed but did each hour long interview seem long to anyone? Also, did the interview day include going to UCI Medical Center in Orange?

Its my #1 and I'm really hoping it goes well.

I had my faculty interview at the medical center... I took a shuttle with maybe 10 other interviewees to get there (it wasn't stressful and there was no way to get lost).

I'm sure you'll have a great time... UCI is an awesome school. Good luck!

I don't think either of my interviews were an entire hour. The student interview was plenty long though. My faculty interviewer was late so that one was only 20 minutes. But I think it was only supposed to be 30 minutes long in the first place.

Can any current students (or people very familiar with UCISOM) comment on the pros and cons of Irvine? I'm especially interested in their clinical opportunities, from what I've read it sounds like most rotations are at Douglas or at the VA in Long Beach? R

Pros/Cons during first 2 years? (socially, academically, location)

Pros/Cons during clinical years? (sites available? is there much diversity of patient population through UCIMC?)

Also, how many students would you say do research and what are the strongest research areas?

Thanks in advance!

Why don't they just reject me? I've been complete since early sep and ned closure!

I am definitely wanting to know this as well

Same.. Any recent IIs here?

Anyone know when the last IIs go out? I saw a current student posted a bit earlier stating both secondaries and IIs were going out and that they interview for another couple of months...

I'm not sure when the last interview invites go out, but the student host I stayed with had his interview in April last year... so I'm guessing there's still time to receive an interview invite here.

Any thoughts if we will hear back today or tomorrow?

Yeah maybe... When did you interview? mine was December.

Rejected 1/14/13... didn't receive an email, just checked today via the status page. complete early August... oh well 🙁

November 27... so much waiting. And I kind of have a hunch that I'll have to do a lot more waiting for this school.

eh just interviewed here and was looking forward to hearing back soon. guess i'll be waiting a while too 🙁

Same here... I thought they said the committee would meet on Jan 15th... so we should be hearing soon right? Anyone who interview in NOV... were you guys told a date when they would meet? ... the waiting is killing me!

I think I remember hearing someone say January 2 in passing, but as far as I know no one has heard anything yet. Maybe they'll just notify multiple interview groups at the same time.

So my father is a medical alumni from UCI, and on the application they didn't ask about any alumni relatives. I am still on the chopping block and was wondering if I should maybe email admissions with a LOI (my research project has been sent to journal for publication) and try and slip in my intent to attend as well as mentioning my father as a MD alum. Thoughts? UCI is my #1 and watching it slip away is heartbreaking.

I don't think any of the UC's care about alumni relatives... but I could be wrong.

It's a reasonable guess. UCI is not the most LGBT-friendly university.

I wouldn't say that. I came out in both my applications and the interviews. Didn't exactly take a sexual minority major but I did an LGBT and HIV internship in San Francisco. Went to a meet and greet the night before and one of the first year students brought up LGBT resources in the school and surrounding areas. Over-all, they seemed pretty receptive to it. Albeit, it wasn't the major focus of my essays or interviews.

Did a walk around of the UCI campus though and there seemed to be a good LGBT presence there. I remember being approached by this LGBT franternity doing their rush around the undergrad campus. As to how they singled me out from the crowd of people walking by, I can only assume it was because they saw me staring at the rainbow flag they draped around their table. Hehe.

Definitely not as open a place as San Francisco but you can definitely find yourself in a much less LGBT-friendly place than Irvine. But I completely understand the feeling, thought the same thing when I got my rejection from Georgetown. Did research on human embryonic stem cells in college too, so I can see how my application may be distasteful to more religious schools.

Post-Interview Update letter - who / what email should I send it to?

Thanks!

What is happening here? Have any December interviewees heard back yet?

I was wondering the same thing... I have not heard a thing. I thought they said Jan 15th... :/

Heard nada. Maybe they got held up with holidays and new interviewees. Maybe end of month? That would be awesomeeeee!

interview on 4/24 moved up to this monday lol. so random.

I'm a current student finishing up the clinical years.

Rotations are mainly at UCIMC, LB VA, Miller's Children's in LB, Memorial in LB, CHOC in Orange. UCI also has a few satellite clinics, one is in Santa Ana, another is in Anaheim. Some outpatient rotations are at various private practices throughout OC/LB.

Pros/Cons during clinical years? (sites available? is there much diversity of patient population through UCIMC?)
There are a bunch of different possible rotation sites, which results in plenty of diversity. UCIMC itself serves a pretty broad spectrum of people too.

Probably more than half of each class does something at some point. The number of people who put in significant research time throughout their medical school career is a lot smaller.

As far as specific areas, you can pretty much find something in any field. I've seen students who have been impressively productive doing urology, ENT, ortho, rads stuff, but that might just be the nature of the people interested in those fields. Plenty of basic science stuff going on as well.

I'm scheduled for an interview on 4/24; I'm hoping they move it up. Did they send you an email to notify you of the change?

the admissions office secretary just called me and said a slot opened up. she said they were just calling local people to see who would take it. i live 20 min away.

Hey all. Received an interview invitation yesterday. Scheduled for 4/24. I haven't been to an interview in months. Very excited!

Congraaaaaaats🙂
Was it a change on the status page or an actual email?
Was c 10/18
Still under review and no word :-(

Saw today that my interview status changed to awarded, but no email yet. Should I wait for an email invite before scheduling the interview?

It was an actual email. I hadn't checked that status page in months so it could have changed before then.

I don't think there is any reason to wait. I never got the interview invite email, just the status change.

Super helpful, thanks!

So I scheduled for 4/24, and I am very excited for the chance to move back out west! 😀 Now I just have to convince them to accept me so late in the game...

Come on UCI! Been complete since August. I was born at UCIMC and live 10 miles away from Irvine, so show me some love!!

just interviewed today. amazing school and amazing students. only downsides are basically mandatory class + monday tests (good and bad since you get the weekend to study).

the facilities are so nice, and the professors really care about the well-being of the students.

Hey,do you mind expanding on the mandatory class + monday tests? Do you know how much class time there is, what it consists of, and how much of the pre-clinical years consist of Monday tests? Because those seem like some pretty big negatives 🙁

So they don't really have exams every Monday. At least in my first year, they were more like every 2 weeks or so (1-2 hours long). But around October, we had something like 8 weeks in a row of Monday exams.

In second year, they're more spread out (and have anywhere from 3-6 weeks of material on them), so they're much bigger exams (3-4 hours long). It makes you miss the smaller exams of the first year lol. I think the idea is to force you to keep up with the material in first year with frequent exams, then transition you into taking longer exams the second year in preparation for boards.

I can't really comment on what the mandatory attendance is like because my class is the last to not have to deal with the new policy. I personally am not really a lecture person, so I'm glad I didn't have to deal with mandatory attendance.

I also didn't have to deal with mandatory attendance, but I can comment on the schedule the first two years.

MS1 year is mostly 8-noon lecture, with a few hours of class during the afternoons 1-2 days per week. It's very light compared to most schools, and you have a ton of free time. In the beginning of the year you have an exam nearly every Monday, but they cover a limited amount of material. Exams start spreading out toward the end of the year, but they cover more.

MS2 year there is a lot of lecture. Probably 8 to 4 or 5 most days, with 1 day on average until noon. The biggest concern with this is that in the past many students stopped attending lecture during second year to focus on step 1 studying, which is no longer possible. You do finish sometime in March and have ~8 weeks to study for step 1, so there should be enough time on the back end to make up for it. If you are trying to crush step 1 this will be a tough, but manageable year.

I'll try to check this thread periodically and answer questions.

Just had a quick question for current students. I have heard from a couple people I know at Irvine (MS1s and MS2s) that the recent curriculum changes (ie switching from P/F to H/P/F for second year and the mandatory attendance policy) were implemented literally right before new terms started. This seems pretty hard to believe as it seems like some students were sold on a curriculum that was abruptly changed right before they matriculated and presumably had already withdrawn their acceptances from other schools. Are these claims accurate?

How often is the waitlist reviewed? Is it possible for students to be accepted off of the waitlist prior to May 15?

Gahh.h.h...h.h. there goes my hopes and dreams for my own school.

admission status alternate 🙁 and not even an email!
