Just received the 4-6 week update... Still in the upper portion of the soon to be wait list. Crossing my fingers every Wednesday for that call!

ME TOO!!! Can't wait for an official call! 😀

same, it's so hard to explain to other people haha

I KNOW!!! I have the same problem. All of my friends and family keep asking me where I've been accepted. I just say that I got accepted to UCF and I throw up some big quotation marks when I say it lol Of course, I then have to explain the quotation marks

I am going to be an older applicant for this coming app cycle in 2013 (opening June, I suppose). To REL especially, do you have any advice for those applicants who may be those applying as a second career? I am in my mid-30's. There are excellent med schools, particularly in the Northeast, that actively seem to recruit older applicants, but since the UCF med school is so new, I am not sure if there is a similar focus here. I am extemely interested in the program at UCF, I think it is going to end up being a leader among schools, but was wondering what impact age might have on an applicant's chances here. What can an older, non-trad applicant show you that might increase their chances at an interview or acceptance? I appreciate any advice from REL, or from any applicant who may have had a similar experience applying here.

I am not Rel, but I'm a non-trad applicant applying here. They chose to interview me this cycle, but they have not yet made a decision about me. If you want to know specifics, please feel free to private message me. As for generalizations, you'll of course need a recent MCAT score, and most schools require this within the past 3 years (this school included). This demonstrates your competence in the core sciences regardless of the time that has passed since you took those classes in college. Some medical schools require that your course work be recent, and some do not. You'll want to aim for those that do not. I don't see this on UCF's website, but Rel will likely comment within a few days to clarify.

You'll also need some type of recent patient contact experience in healthcare (e.g, shadowing, volunteering, etc.). This experience will be your "awakening" in that it made you realize what you do now does not satisfy your desire for care giving as medicine would.

As far as the other things traditional pre meds have on their applications (clubs at their universities, research, etc.), these are how you display your leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. What you've done in your current career path (led a project, managed employees, represented your company at trade shows, having a track record of promotions, etc.) or any community involvement you may have had (raising money for a church, a child's organization at school, any particular special interest group in your community, etc.) will demonstrate this in your case. It might help if you write a little blurb in your AMCAS application about how you plan to translate these skills into making progress in healthcare. I imagine what they want to see is that you can form a goal, then start and finish it... to make sure you're a go getter and a get 'er doner. This school is REALLY big on having YOU participate in its development and not just letting it participate in your development. My experience there made me feel like they embrace change and will never simply say "that's not a good idea because we simply don't do that here". I think this is what excites most people about UCF.

I sent an update in today, but it felt more like a re-re-re-expression of interest

Tygerguy, I sent you a PM. Thanks!

For those who interviewed in mid-January, do you know what day we should expect to hear from the school?

+1! Found out I made it to the upper 1/2 of the upper 1/3, which is AWESOME. But would love the official call as well!

Nice! You're rolling right along.
Got the acceptance today. Placed in upper half of upper third on Jan 9.

I'm ridiculously happy today. UCF feels SO RIGHT and I'm ecstatic to be a part of it later this year.

UCF COM has REALLY made me excited and motivated for the years to come. 😍

Will tomorrow be the last day for interview invites or are they all scheduled? I'm a little shocked based on where I was at last year to not even have an interview. I'm not really sure what I could have done differently in reapplying given all the circumstances or is it because the applicants this year are that much stronger?

just got rejected. super sad, was really interested in this school.

FL admissions confuses the heck out of me.

I was also rejected but I appreciate that they let us know. I don't like schools that do silent rejections.
But well, you and I have been already accepted and I see that you are also waiting on VCU. I really liked there too. I also have a couple of more interviews that I'm waiting to hear from this week. One of them is in Florida. Good luck for the rest of your cycle.

What school in FL? I would love to at least get 1 interview IS lol.

I anticipate that we will complete interview invitations by the end of this week. It was a very strong application year. Our applications were up by over 400 this year putting us closer to 4,000 applications, a number we exceeded only in our charter class year.

Good to know. Thanks REL!

Is there still time to send LOIs by any chance? 😀

I heard FAU is interviewing for the waitlist.

Any idea of UF?
FAU can not over accept students right now. They can over-accept only after four years so they have an accepted-wait list which is basically what other medical schools do by over accepting. FAU is just calling it differently. They also have a regular wait list. If you get in the accepted wait list you have a pretty good chance to get in. I'm not sure if UF is interviewing for a wait list or straight acceptance but I will try go give them a call tomorrow.

Most new schools choose to not "over-book" their class due to their own caution. There is no LCME rule prohibiting accepting more than you have seats for early in the process. There would be a problem with the LCME if you started class with more than you have seats for. I SUSPECT that all MD programs in the state are over-booking, including FAU. This will be the first year that UCF will over-book.

I anticipate that I will receive final interview listing today or tomorrow so we are almost at the 12th hour. OI's may not be of any benefit now, normally I do not put much stock in LOI's.

As an aside, I also suspect that I will also get lists of those who will not be invited to interview today and tomorrow. This has been the largest application year that we have had with the exception of the charter class. The pool is a very strong one with great depth to the applications, competition has been very keen.

Thanks for the candid response! It is appreciated.🙂

Hi REL - by how many students does UCF plan to over-book? Thank you.

So do most of the students live at the Legends complex? I'm pretty sure I'd like to live there for the community aspect of it. I'm having a bit of trouble finding the actual costs of housing there so can any current student comment on how much a 2-2 or 3-3 is? Is it about $500 for a room in a 3-3? Just happily working out my budget for next year.
I also read it's pet friendly?

Rejected! =(

I wonder if the "We are happy to be of assistance to you for a future application if that is your decision." part is genuine or just courtesy. I definitely would love some professional feedback on one of my favorite schools this cycle.

Probably about ~30, target is 150 for 120 seat class......not a huge amount.

Hm...if that's the case, and assuming that a proportionate number are accepted this year (primarily accepted and accepted off the "not-yet-accepted" list) compared to last year, wouldn't that mean that less would be accepted from the waitlist? Not a huge difference, but I'm just saying...

Does that mean that those of us who are still eligible for interview selection will either see an II or rejection in the next few days, or will there be some silent rejections?

Thanks for your help.

No silent rejections, emails have been flowing incrementally for about a week. II's will be done by Monday at the latest.

Rejected this morning. I think all schools should have an person in admissions on SDN answering questions and providing information throughout the admissions cycle. It really calms the panic level. Thank you REL.

Rejected as well. Thanks again for your insights throughout the cycle.

FYI, if you log in to check the status after rejection, it says "REJECTED." Made me laugh a bit, since UCF is the only school that is willing to use the word (and in caps!), instead of "declined for interview" or something else that is overly polite.

It's refreshing and in line with the school's openness and directness, haha.

My status is still AORTA. Not sure if I should keep my hopes up or just expect the rejection to come within the week 😕
