hi,

not sure if this has been adressed recently.. but I have been on AORTA status since october 2012.. I was wondering if there are interview invites still being sent out. If so how many are left? I am an OOS and don't know if i should hear soon. Also, if I do get rejected without an interview invite does UCF email during the cycle about rejections or are the rejections sent together in march or something

This is from REL:

We are nearly complete in filling the January 4 and 7 dates and have some of the 11, 18, and 25th dates in January filled. I anticiate that we will fill the 11th and 18th by the end of next week.

I do not feel that completing an application later in the process is a great hindrance IF your file is competitive in all of the areas. If there are some areas where the experiences were not as strong as those already in the pool then there probably is a disadvantage. It is always better to be eligible for selection for as much of the interview season (Sep-Mar) as possible.

As of this time we have interviewed/scheduled for interview 260 of the ~450-475 that we intend to interview. That appears to translate to 55% of those that we will interview have been invited. As of now there are about 1,300 that are EFI. If you have been EFI for awhile, EMAIL updates to include significant information regarding activities, research, fall term grade updates (NO transcripts/NO PAPER --- EMAIL ONLY) etc. may help to get it done.

I'm not sure how encouraging this is, but it is as clear as I can make it.

According to this thread:
http://mobile.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=823471&page=12

It looks like rejections come around february. Mabye REL will weigh in if I am wrong.

I'm the same, except I'm IS. I am hoping to get an interview. So far I have only been invited to one. =/ Good luck to you

We're not out of it yet! REL said to be sure to send in an update (if you have had some good experiences since secondary submission). Look at the thread from last year... They still send II out in february.

I have a question. I was AORTA status before, but I checked my status today and it no longer says that, now it says nothing. Does that mean I am no longer eligible for an interview or is something else going on? The place where it previously said AORTA is blank now. Does anyone know what that means?

REL has addressed this perviously. It's just the system resetting itself and should have the AROTA status back in a bit.

I am SOOOO eager to hear back from UCF after break...longest month EVER for a decision!

Actually this is a technical difficulty problem that began over the last 24 hours or so. I have been in contact with our IT folks. They surmise that the auto-feed from our AMCAS to the Applicant Dashboard has ceased to communicate. On of the IT group will return to the area late tomorrow night an will look from his computer to see what can be done. Worst case scenario is that this will be out until the university reopens on January 2. No applicant status changes have occurred since the university closed on Friday, December 20. If you "must" know your status you can email [email protected] and I will try to get something back to you. I apologize for this difficulty.

REL- Thank you very much. I was highly concerned when I saw it and the fact that it has been that way for a few days now. I'm glad I still have a chance!

Question for anyone who may have insight....

I compared the number of interviews scheduled last cycle (409) and the number of interviews intended to be scheduled this cycle (450-475).

I see two outcomes (assuming little/no interviewee rejections):

1. An increased number of people waitlisted by March.

2. An increased number of people accepted by March that would decrease waitlist movement.

The class size is only increasing by 20 students from 100 students last cycle, a considerably smaller number than the increase in interviews (and likely waitlist size).

Thus, my thinking is that less of the post-March 8th waitlist will gain acceptances due to increased waitlist size or an increase in accepted applicants by March.

How could the top two thirds of the waitlist be accepted given this situation??

The math shows about 4 interviews per seat. It's almost a directly proportional increase.

Just got a call from a Florida phone number saying he was a Dean at UCF and was calling me about an interview for next week that someone just cancelled on. Talked for about 10 minutes, then he started laughing and hung up... Turns out he was a friend of a guy I go to college with. Bad evening 🙁

For those that have already interviewed- does the school provide a folder with information, notepad, pen, etc? Or should I bring my own?

Thanks!

Damn, what a douche! Too bad the Dean is a female...dead give away.

They give you a folder with info, a pen, maybe a note pad, and a flashdrive with the Powerpoint presentation loaded. Actually, I don't think I've been to a school that doesn't give you some sort of folder + pen. I did see some people with their own fancy folder, so feel free to bring something else if you wish.

He will burn in hell for that one. You might be able to pursue this and get him for impersonation. If not, you could always write a letter from a lawyer you invent to scare him. Two can play at this game. I can relate, though my experience was the opposite. Earlier this cycle I was called for a real interview invitation at UF (my only one so far) and at first I thought it was a joke. Because of this, I was actually pretty mad when they called (ironic, huh?). However, I recognized Leila's voice (admissions director) after she continued to speak with me, so I quickly got over it. I don't think some people realize how nerve racking this entire process is. Every time an unknown number calls my phone I get heart palpitations. It's hard enough to suppress out neuroticism as it is. Sorry that happened to you, but from this experience, at least you've learned to never, ever be that jack @$$. Good luck with the rest of this application cycle.

Blah, I'm over it. It was just a bad joke that he didn't think through. I was watching a movie with my parents when he called, I'm pretty sure my mom was the most upset of any of us lol 😛. I do like the fake letter idea though 🙂.

Yeah I figured they'd probably provide something, but it never hurts to double check 🙂 Thanks!!

Does UCF give merit scholarships with acceptances? If I didn't receive anything in my acceptance packet is it safe to say I'm out of the running? I know schools do this differently, but was wondering for UCF.

It was a 786 area code which I had no clue about. My iphone said it was from FL, USA so I believed it at first.

II today, complete 7/3. The six month gap is likely due to a low undergraduate GPA and the blessing of even getting an interview is likely due to 4+ years worked into a high graduate GPA with many publications (but of course this is speculatory, there's no way to know this for sure). I hope this is encouraging for those of you in a similar situation. It can sometimes be hard to know where you stand as a non-trad applicant. MCAT, ECs, shadowing, volunteering, employment, undergrad research, leadership, travel/hobbies/breadth of life experiences are all pretty average for a competitive MD applicant, in my opinion. Course work/strength of shcedule was fairly rigorous/favorable.Good luck everyone!

any movement on the waitlist / acceptances recently?

I don't know for sure, but I think unlikely. There is some trickling off the top of the top third every now and then but I think the vast majority of waitlist movement will occur from late May through mid-July.

In looking at the list of 75 we have admitted, 21 have spent some time on the not-yet-accepted list (this will become the wait list after we have completed interviews in March). I call it the not-yet-accepted list because we do select applicants for admission at almost every weekly committee meeting and invariably some will come from this group...

This is really helpful to know, thank you Rel!

Similar situation here just no II yet. I was waitlisted last year and missed a spot by a few positions, then put my application in a bit late this year while waiting for my new MCAT scores. I hope I'll be in one of the next groups and am just keeping myself busy at work. Good luck with your interview!

Hey, would you mind sharing with us how far down you initially started on the waitlist, and where you were located on the waitlist in May? - So that those of us who are in a questionable spot on the waitlist can get a feel for the type of movement that will occur at UCF. Thanks, and best of luck with the applications!

Sure thing. I interviewed Jan 8th, initially waitlisted top half of the middle third. By the end of interviews, I dropped to bottom half of middle third (March I believe). Not sure where I ended up at May 15th, but I finished somewhere between 1-5 spots away from a position when classes started. Here I am back for more!

Wow I was initially waitlisted in the top half of the middle third as well. Hoping I can squeeze in somehow. When did you hear back with a final decision?

What a bust! Good luck this year!

Got the interview feedback call from Rel Larkin for the Dec 14 interview there:

Top half of Upper third on waiting list. Couldn't believe it. Terribly cool!!! I thought I was going to be around 3 halves below that cause I am the "unsophisticated" type compared to some premeds and my goals are underserved/rural/family medicine. Not exactly the Da Vinci type. So that's the second interview I had and some of the best news because this is the first in state response (and much more reasonable tuition)

If REL could please reply to this.. been on AORTA since October and still havent received a word.. Approximately how many interview invites are still left to send out? If I haven't heard since October, is it too late for an interview invite or is it still possible to get one?

Congrats!!!! I was interviewed the same day as you apparently. I was placed in the upper third as well but I'm in the bottom half. Looks like we both have a big chance at getting in 🙂

I never got a "final" decision, just an update from REL that I had moved into the top 5 but it was doubtful any more movement would occur the week before classes started (July 25th I think). Looking back, I have to say that everything REL said was 100% accurate and he's very on top of the updates and your chances so pay close attention.

What a bust! Good luck this year!

Thanks and to you also! I'm sure us old research guys have some stories to share.

Good luck all. I remember the pressure as being intense. And for those of you who got accepted- Yippee. It takes the pressure off and now the fun will really begin.

UCF Class of 2016

Hm...if that's the case, then it doesn't look good for people any lower than the top third of the wait list right now.

I wouldn't go that far. Its entirely dependent on who interviews after you and what your score is versus theirs. Like I said before, REL has it pretty much spot on. If he tells you based on previous years your chances are good, then they are. If he tells you its going to be close like he did me, then its going to be close. I would pay more attention to that comment than where you stand in the "thirds" IMHO.

Thanks for letting me (us) know. Good to know that I'm being too pessimistic 🙂

Does anyone know when REL is going to send updates on wait list positions again

I would estimate within the next couple of weeks based on the dates of his previous updates in November and December.

Well, actually...did he always tell you it would be close, or did he start saying that when interviews were over in early March?

He informed me when I was initially waitlisted after my interview. I am IS, so it might be different for anyone OOS with us basically competing for different positions.

This is a school I am interested in, but, being OOS, didn't have much hope for. Just went through my Excel sheet and saw I should check my status. To my surprise, I'm entering the systemic (ha!) pool! AORTA EFI, lol.

I didn't see the answer to this, though I saw the guy with the baby avatar ask, so forgive me if it's already been answered: how many OOS people get an EFI status, and how many OOS get II's? I know the number of OOS interviewed from MSAR, but that's the total.

Thanks!

REL posted this on 12/8

So about 1300 (for both IS & OSS) get EFI and due to the increase in total interviews, I would guess around 130 OOS'ers get interviews.

Wish I could get one. Sent an update in late November, but sill nada. And I have nothing new to send them to get them to look at my file again as I already graduated so it's not like I get grades every quarter or something. Still crossing my fingers though!! :xf:

Thanks for the number crunching. I was complete Jan 1st (like I said, a school I like, but OOS status made it unlikely). I too have nothing in the foreseeable future to update with, so I'm there with you. Hopefully both of us hear something soon (though I didn't have as long a wait as you)!

So as a newer M.D. program we are FINALLY at a point where we can prove that our curriculum and varied teaching modalities work and that our students can obtain solid residencies. Than "final exam" will occur on March 15. There are a couple of very competitive specialties that match early, they are Ophthalmology (earlier this week) and Urology which will happen in about 2 weeks. Both are very difficult to get a match in, and probably more difficult from a program with no history (or so they say).....well, the early results are in. Two applied to Ophthalmology, two were selected........both to their top choice......it looks like we are IN the GAME for sure. So part of that gossip in the pre-med and admissions interview world...."they aint got history, ya aint gettin' a good residency from a new program"....does not appear to be correct....hmmmmm, what else is pure rumor or mis-information that you hear on the interview trail???? For more of the UCF Opthal match go to http://med.ucf.edu/news/2013/01/two...-highly-competitive-ophthalmology-residences/

Cheers!
