This would be my understanding too. Hopefully REL will post when they get down to that magical 120 number and us waitlisters can start expecting some movement.

Based on his last couple emails (to those in the upper 1/3rd), it doesn't look like we should expect anything till after May 15th.

Edit: BTW, anyone (aka any waitlisters) get the Certiphi Screening email yet?

When we drop to 119, the wail list will get a call. There is normally very limited movement in April until the end of the month then momentum begins modestly. Then as May arrives movement will pick up some steam. I guesstimate that upper 1/3 will get calls at the end of the first week in May.....let's see how close I get.

As for Certiphi, I thought that those placed on alternate lists, and had not yet been accepted, would begin to receive emails from Certiphi......this a fairly new thing so it may be that they dont do this until May. I have heard of a couple of others who have not yet been contacted.........it could be that I am off on this date. I'll look into this.

REL,
Thanks for being so helpful on these boards. I remember during my interview day you mentioned how school Step 1 score reporting is pretty ambiguous considering not all students report their scores and some may even report a different number. Judging by the fantastic match list, is it safe to assume that those students performed quite well on their boards? Do you think this is something that reflects the classes below as well? Thanks!

Thanks, I think the discussion was toward Step I/II and all programs being above the national average, so they say --- probably true in FL. Our charter class did perform extremely well on Step II, much better than they did on Step I. The improvement is attributed mainly toward maturing of the program and the student, as well as development of our Student Academic Support Services (SASS) office in Student Affairs. That office has had a marked impact on student time management, testing skills, testing preparation etc. The two in that office are well experienced in this work and they are nearly as crazy and focused as I am.....great to work with, and the student really like the services. So yes, following classes will have an advantage over those who blazed the trail in this regard.

Hi REL,

I was wondering if now that we're into the month of May you might have a better idea as to when you'll get through the upper half of the upper third of the waitlist (in terms of giving them offers)? Thanks!

Hi Rel,

I was wondering if we will get a status-update email after May 15th on how much the list has shifted. Thank you!!!! 🙂

Some movement has started over this past week and I expect it to pick up as finals and graduation are finishing up. I have seen a fairly equal number decide to stay with us as depart right now. It is shaping up like the normal pattern and it is possible that we can begin some admitting action toward the end of next week or early the following week. That upper group will see action soon....

Hi Rel,

I think the last batch of updates was done around April 10?? --- I may wait until the week after May 15 to send out an update...sending out something just before May 15 may not portray as accurately.

I suspect that you all on this thread will help me anyway..

REL - I've been thinking about the FIRE module and was wondering if there was a list of faculty available who are willing to take on medical students (as opposed to only PhD students) for FIRE?

Thanks!

I would also really like to see such a list. I remember one of the students during the interview day said it was difficult for them to find a mentor for their FIRE project :/ Not sure if this was a special circumstance, but it does seem strange that there is no list on the UCF COM website that shows available faculty/their research interests. Seems like a standard thing for a med school website. Or maybe I am missing something (very likely!)? Apologies if so!

The associated UCF Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences (right next to the medical education building) lists faculty by their research interests (under the blue "research" box on the lower left):

http://med.ucf.edu/biomed/facilities/burnett-building-at-lake-nona/

As far as I know, the faculty listed here are only basic research-oriented, so I don't know about clinical or translational research. Since it isn't indicated whether the faculty listed on the website take on medical students for FIRE, I'm not sure who to contact...

We do have a host of mentors for FIRE, if you are going to matriculate here you should be able to find mentors in most areas of interest from bench to clinical research.

I am actually pushing for a page that will be fully devoted to all of the fun and work stuff that all members of the COM have participated in, and all of our other corporate partners, etc. That would include FIRE projects, sports, faculty, staff, student achievements, etc. As a new school we have soo much to do and need the best students who simply want to be collaborative and build.

Thanks for the response! I think this kind of page would be a great idea.

If we matriculate at UCF together we could help make this a reality!

Maybe a FIRE project? As it is right now I cannot see many reasons why UCF would not be the medical school of choice in Florida unless there are instances like immediate family circumstances, a blow away scholarship, or that you are a person who would prefer the staid plug-in lifestyle vs creating history and having the extra collaborative edge. Time for change folks, kinda like Folgers or Starbucks....cant do Folgers anymore. Folgers is living off of past hype like some med programs, time for a change folks.

Question for you, REL...

So I am a little confused about the schedule for M-1 and M-2's posted on the UCF CoM website:

http://med.ucf.edu/media/2012/08/Class-Schedule.pdf

EDIT: Let me rephrase my question...are medical students only in class 3-4 hours per weekday? How often do students do clinical skills/simulation center sessions? (I know that they do 8 preceptorships per year). How many other commitments are required outside of the classes and how often do they occur?

Thanks!

According to the M1/M2 Curriculum Committee Chair, we schedule NMT 24 hours of our students time per week. Of that time, NMT 8 hours, and normally 6 hours will be lecture-based. Most weeks there will be 2 hours of clinical skills lab to ensure that the clinical aspects of what you are learning are closely tied to the mainly basic sciences that you are learning. Other teaching/learning is based on the block and information but would most often include some team-based learning, labs, case-based experiences with scenarios or live patients conversing about coping with xxx situation, etc. While we have very few manadatory hours, the integrated methods of teaching/learning would cause you to miss quite a bit if you did not attend.

As for the preceptorships they are split with a bit of a different focus in years 1 and 2. The first year focus is to get you really good at patient history/physicals and presenting to the preceptor. Therefore you will likely be with a primary care doc the first year because they do this routinely, and you will be good at it after the initial year. The second year is split in half whereby you will get two additional specialty experiences with two separate preceptors, likely in two different environments. I think that you will be required to do a certain number of 4 hour preceptorships each year (I think it might be more than 8, maybe 11?? I could be wrong) and you can do more if you desire. In each case the preceptor understands what your curricular focus is at the time and gets you "reps" in practicing xx procedure, etc.

As for other commitments, the preceptorships are outside of the 24 scheduled hours. The only other thing that comes to mind that is done outside of the 24 scheduled hours is your FIRE "research" project that spans the initial two years. While there are some milestone events that you must meet along the timeline, different projects will be more/less time intense. There are many ways to work this depending upon the way you like to work. If you are a meticulous schedule person your can do 2 hours per week for two years, others may do the bulk of it during the summer between the first two years; do something that you like and be as structured or flexible with it depending upon how you prefer to work.

I hope that his clarifies.

Thank you! Now, just to be sure I understand..."NMT" stands for "no more than," right?

So, has there been any waitlist movement, Rel? Thanks.

I'm putting my AMCAS application together just in case I have to reapply. I really want to go here!!!!! Feels like I need a miracle since I'm in the middle third. so sorry I'm ranting. 🙁 *sigh*

I was accepted last week, oddly because I was in the bottom half of the top third. But I did not choose to accept the offer. Good luck all!

Shwaaaaat?!?! :wow:

That means I could get accepted any day now cause REL said I was right in the middle of the upper 1/3rd, but technically in the lower 1/2 of the upper 1/3rd.

Now I'm going to be glued to my phone, especially on May 15 when lots of movement will probably happen.

Question: Are there people out there that are in the upper 1/2 of the upper 1/3rd that have not been accepted?

I know REL said they go in order for the most part so skipping the enter upper 1/2 of the upper 1/3rd seems strange.

I know, its all very strange to me as well! That was why I never posted on this thread that I was accepted.

As of 4/9/13: You are in the lower half of the upper 1/3 of a total list of 228.

As of 5/1/13: Please find attached a copy of your acceptance letter, which will go out via regular mail tomorrow. You may use this letter for your response.

I assure you all that I am NOT lying!!!

Congrats, accmd!! You've been so looking forward to this, I'm glad to see you get it. Maybe ill see you in August!

Thank you!!! But I actually declined my offer. I'll be attending UM. If you wind up at UCF though, I'm sure you'll absolutely love it!

Dont be shocked! The Admissions Committee can make limited adjustments. In reality there is not much more than a five point difference between the scores in the total upper 1/3. As accmd will recall, I input a comment in the thread that she started as she was considering two programs. The committee made the decision to make a minor adjustment, especially since the upper 1/3 will all get the opportunity (probably in May) --- movement has not been strong yet....but I suspect many will make decisions over the weekend.

Thanks for the clarification REL!

And actually, I love the idea that UCF is trying to 'poach' students based on SDN threads... or at least giving them an earlier acceptance trying to get a student to choose UCF over the other school. This just goes to show how in touch UCF is with its applicants 🙂

Thanks, it's all about giving applicants usable and timely intel as well as the opportunity to make an informed decision. It's the way we work here for our students, why be different with applicants?

Since the committee does make adjustments, is there value to reporting significant accomplishments such as a new publication?

The committee does not do a formal, full review of the file so they will never see any added information after they have voted. They will review the basic scoring data before they make any adjustments. Actually adjustments are not terribly common.

I didn't apply to UFC med, but I think it's awesome that REL posts and keeps y'all updated! I wish more schools did this

Just out if curiosity, what is the reasoning behind the Committee not accepting any updates for wait listed students? Or at least not really reviewing them.

They get thousands of applicants, how many times are you asking them to look at each one?

Too bad, but thanks!

Since a few ppl have been accepted recently, does that mean we've hit the magic number?

Since a few ppl have been accepted recently, does that mean we've hit the magic number?

Since accmd was taken off the waitlist, I would say yes, the number of acceptees dropped below 120 and we are now into the waitlist.

If movement hasn't been too strong, what does that mean for those of us near the top of the middle third?

It's important to remember that while the waitlist is "officially" 228 people long, it is "really" 258 people long due to the 30 overacceptees. Thus, we have gone (at least) 31 people down this 258 person list, which is fairly close to the top half of the top third of the 258 person waitlist (43 people long).

I don't think this assumption is necessarily true. I would venture to guess REL and the adcom made a special early offer to accmd trying to draw her away from other programs.

Possibly, but the waitlist almost exactly 1 year ago was about at this point (almost through the top half of the top third on May 8th).

Lol I'm asking, as I stated, about the 200 on the waitlist, not the thousands of first-round applications.

I think the reasoning behind not accepting updates was that it would require re-reviews of all waitlisted interviewees who submitted updates. As the number of waitlisted interviewees increased, the number of waitlisted interviewees who would require re-reviewing due to updates would also possibly increase, making each admissions meeting increasingly cumbersome.
