Can any current students comment on how the global health opportunities are during the fourth year if you are not in the GMED track? Are there options, does the school help pay, etc? Any response is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

II today.

Followed the normal 'applicant in progress' > 'process' > 'progress' > 'process' status progression/procession.

Turned to the most recent 'applicant in process' status two weeks ago if anyone cares...👍

Thanks for sharing, do you know about how long you were applicant in progress the 2nd time by any chance?

Still at the "applicant in progress" phase since 11/21. 😱

+1! I'm probably still going to apply GMED but this was something I was wondering about just in case I don't get in.

Of those who interviewed, how many are accepted? Does anybody have the % data from US News?

Just a thought.... I was accepted into UIC this year but had to withdraw bc the OOS tuition was insane. I'm a disadvantaged student and am Hispanic, and I was not offered a scholarship to cover the difference between the IS and OOS tuition (I heard only 25 URMs and/or disadvantaged students are offered this scholarship).
Hello,

I'm an M2 at UIC. You should have spoken to someone in financial aid. They don't limit the number of OOS waivers for disadvantaged or URM students. Frankly, I'm surprised you withdrew for this reason without someone noticing.

anyone whose status recently changed to final decision pre ii get a rejection letter in the mail?

I'm set to interview on feb. 5 on the Chicago campus. Can someone share their interview experience please?

Also I'm trying to find some more information about the differences between the campus locations...anything in specific I should be aware of, other than the different patient populations?

Thanks!

So, what are the main differences between the Peoria and Urbana-Champaign campus? Positives/negatives of each?

Well I can't comment on the Chicago campus, but I live in Urbana/Champaign right now and have for the last 4 years, so I'd be happy to answer any questions about it.

I really enjoyed my interview day. There were three interviewers: a student (mine was an M4), an MD, and a PhD. My student and MD interviewers were incredibly relaxed and kind; my student interviewer also happened to be our tour guide. My PhD interviewer was intense, but it only showed how much she cared about the interview process.

The questions (for me at least) centered around diversity, which is something fundamentally important for UIC. The interviews tend to be a mix of Q & A and conversation - the interviewers have a set of questions they are required to ask, but they do try to ask follow-up questions to make the conversation flow. I heard from other interviewees that they were asked many scenario questions - I only got one or two, and they were not difficult.

There was a morning and an afternoon session. I was one of the afternoon interviewees, so I got to talk to many of the morning people before I had mine. Overall, it was very organized; they "escorted" you to your interview locations, so you never have to worry about being late, lost, etc. They also had you wait in this very spacious room with comfortable sofa and chairs. Lunch was pretty good too.

The only slightly disappointing part was that we didn't get to see much of the campus (weather, time, etc). We also didn't get to see many current medical students - at least I didn't meet any, other than my interviewer. Otherwise, I think the school gave a very good impression.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info!

I hope this weather cooperates...

to those already accepted, how long does it take to receive the campus assignment? I sent mine in on Thursday but I don't know how much deliberation goes into the process...

took me a couple weeks but I live in CA. Also, looks like Chicago is full now 🙁

Hi!

I am also OOS and hispanic, and the 70k a year is clearly very scary. I have been accepted since the fall and have not received any scholarships. UIC is def my first choice. Do you have any idea when this scholarships go out? If they offer them with the acceptance packet I guess i am out of luck... I would appreciate any info!

Unless you are doing a MD/PhD, you won't be assigned the UC campus. All students on the Peoria or Rockford tracks start in UC for Y1, then Y2-3-4 are in Peoria or Rockford.

Has anyone heard anything with regard to Chicago being full? Frankly, the appeal of this school drops of a cliff for me if they try to make me live in Rockford or Peoria.

Well they say that it's filled on a first come first served basis. I requested the Chicago campus and got Rockford. It may open up later again as people drop their acceptance for other schools.

I know that UIC often will say that it fills on a first come first serve basis, but I have heard otherwise. A med student at UIC who interviews applicants said it is not that way. He said that they filled Chicago partially full at first. Then, in order to get Champaign's 125 full, they fill that in the middle, then go back to filling Chicago.
Don't know if he was completely right, but I would think that he would have an inside scoop. So take it with a grain of salt but this may be the case. Let's hope 😀

See, when I interviewed, they denied this vehemently. They told me, when I interviewed on the first day possible, that I had a chance of not getting my preference. So who knows. 🙄 Your inside scoop would make a lot of sense, though it does seem unfair to people who interview in the middle.

Yea I guess there's no way to know for sure. I imagine that the reason you see people getting Chicago when they are accepted from the waitlist or after the May 15th deadline might be because slots open up as people choose other schools. Although, if people get Chicago now, it will look like rolleyes idea seems to be the right one.

I interviewed in mid November and they made it seem like we had a good chance of getting our choice but it was by no means a guarantee. Hoping I can get a transfer to Chicago!

Oops by rolleyes I mean reek. The formatting on my phone is strange. Thought that would be a strange name!

My screen name is pretty strange too 😀 I think you're referring to DocIllini's idea, anyway.

I hope you get your transfer too! We Illinoisans unfortunately have to weigh the positives of having the largest state medical school in the country against the necessity of having multiple campuses; some people unfortunately won't get the campus they want.

Yea I guess we will have to find out. Definitely would be unfair to the people in the middle. Always room when people drop their spot so let's hope for that. Might be the deciding factor for me between MCW and here. I love both schools but my family is right in Chicago and I might go for the nicer facilities and such at MCW if I were not to get Chicago. Not that the other campuses are bad at all, just would enjoy the bigger city hospital atmosphere.

Agreed. I'm in the same boat.

I'm in a similar situation with a couple other schools. Hopefully we will hear good news soon!

Does anyone have an idea about when they will release march interview slots??

How does one go about asking for a campus transfer or appealing an assignment? I sent an email to the office of admissions but have not gotten a response. Who is the right person to even contact about this?

I called the Chicago campus admissions office and they said you send it via email and then they look at the requests after May 15th. They are not on a first come first served basis at that point but rather which transfer is really justified.

Did anyone who got accepted recently get their track assignment yet? Had my preference in last Thursday when I got my packet

FYI, I was admitted in late April and was initially assigned to Peoria before successfully petitioning for Chicago. I sent a brief letter about my interest in Chicago's research and subspecialties.

Cue the yearly flood of PMs.

"ZOMG my third cousin lives in Chicago and I really like need to be there. is that an OK reason? PLZ"

-edit- That being said, I am more than happy to answer any questions you guys have about UIC, either in this thread or via PM if you prefer.

Just to clarify, they start dealing with petitions after May 15th, right? Or is it before then? A site change would definitely shake up my decision process...

Edit: also, do applicants to the UMed program who were assigned to a non-Chicago track have less of a chance of getting into the UMed program? Do they get looked at for interviews only after those who got assigned to the Chicago track?

Anyone know how the fin aid process goes here? I've submitted my fafsa, but I'm not sure if we should do anything else right now.

I called them with this question a couple of days ago. They will start downloading fafsa submissions within the next couple of weeks and then will start processing awards in March.

There is no additional form to submit but they will let you know if they need anything from you after reviewing your fafsa.
